"I almost never write reviews, but the service that I have received from Shekinah Electric (MICS) has been extraordinary. I just finished renovating a home in Elkhart and ran into multiple major electrical issues. Once I started opening up the walls in this 30 year-old home, I found all sorts of problems and code violations resulting from years of DIY'ers... It was a complete mess. I originally found them on Angie's List. I was on a tight timeline (as all renos are) and they set up the appointment quickly. Adam showed up bright and early the next morning and got right to work. I had him rewire the kitchen which included adding new lights to an existing circuit, running a new circuit, and putting in new outlets. There were also all sorts of appliances and outlets not working in the house. Adam had a great attitude the entire time. He quickly went about knocking out one problem after the next. As he dug deeper into the issues we started to uncover all sorts of things that needed to be updated and fixed. To be clear, this was not him running up the price, it was him clearly explaining to me why things weren't working as I requested and what it takes to fix them. It was awesome. The job took much longer than expected and instead of leaving us high and dry or coming back another day, he had his colleagues cover his other appointments and spent the entire day making sure the job was done right. By the time he left he had turned a house that was an electrical disaster into a completely updated, fully functioning renovation. To top it all off, when he sat down to write out the bill it was incredibly reasonable for the amount of work done. I was quoted the same amount for less than half the work from other places. Great service, cool people, reasonable prices! I have used several electricians and other contractors in Elkhart and working with Adam from Shekinah was the best experience I have had. If you are looking for an electrician in the Michiana area, do yourself a favor and use these guys. You will not regret it."

DBA: LOWE'S OF SOUTH BEND, IN #2593.

"1. They showed up as promise to give us an estimate. 2. They started a week before they said they would. 3. The built one sturdy deck and a ramp with a gentle slope so my wife can get down in her wheelchair. 4. It took three days to complete the work."

"After a phone call to describe the services needed, they said they would call back to schedule a time. They called back 30 minutes later to set an appointment on a Friday morning 10 days later, which was just enough time to have the outlet moved before a cabinet was being installed the following week. Received an email from MB Electric on the Wednesday afternoon 2 days before the appointment saying they would need to reschedule. I emailed back asking when, and they said they couldn't tell me but it would be a couple more weeks. MB was polite but not at all reliable; wouldn't recommend calling them if you have a timeline. Didn't feel the vague email reschedule was professional and would have expected an expedited rescheduled appointment. I moved on and called another electrician who was able to set an appointment 2 days later."

"Very happy with the entire process. Communication was great and Eric even brought Reggie to house the day before the job started to introduce him so I knew who to expect in the morning. Reggie and Cole were great. They took special care to respect my home and did incredible work. My wife and I couldn't be more pleased with the finished product."

"Jim is quite the professional. He was prompt and explained the work to be done, how long it would take and the overall price. He met all my expectations. His helper was also polite and respectful. When the job was done you would have never known that he'd been there - he cleaned the area just as he found it. I would defintely hire him again."

Electrical services FAQs

It’s important to ask an electrician a few questions before you commit to hiring them so you can make an informed decision as a consumer. If you’re getting estimates or considering hiring an electrician, ask them these questions:

  • Are you a full-time electrician?

  • Are you bonded, licensed, and insured?

  • What level of experience do you have as an electrician?

  • Can you please share three references?

  • Do you do residential or commercial electrical work?

  • What kinds of electrical work are you most familiar with?

  • Will any subcontractors be performing the work?

  • Are permits and inspections required?

  • Who is responsible for obtaining permits and inspections?

  • What is your schedule?

  • Do you offer a guarantee or warranty on your work?

  • Will you sign a do-not-exceed clause to keep the job within the budget?

Tipping an electrician is not a requirement nor is it expected, as they build a fair wage into the price of the job. It’s up to your discretion. There are no set rules for tipping electricians, but if they did a great job and you’re so inclined to tip 10% to 15%, it will likely be received with thanks.

Yes, you should get a quote or an estimate from an electrician. Most electricians offer free estimates or quotes. When getting quotes, do your research and verify each electrician’s license. Get quotes from three different electricians to compare. If the prices or items listed appear different on the quotes, ask the electrician to clarify. Learning as much as you can about the electrical work you want done will help you get the most accurate estimate.

Qualified, licensed electricians will charge from $50 to $100 per hour. The cost to hire an electrician for emergency visits may range from $100 to $200 per hour because this urgent service usually takes place during off hours and may require an electrician to leave or reschedule jobs they’re currently working on. Scheduling work on holidays or during periods of high customer demand, like after a major storm, will also lead to higher rates or extra fees.

Yes, although there are different types of electricians, they must be licensed, certified, and in most cases insured. States have different requirements for electrician licensing and certifications. In some cases, there may be licensing requirements at the local level, but not the state level. It’s always a good practice to confirm requirements with your local municipality. If licensing is not required in your area, you may pay more for a licensed electrician with experience than one who is not licensed or certified, but you’re likely to get a better end result for your project.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.
