There are companies in the wood industry that have developed machines to distress a pre-finished product that does not compare to the look or price of our product. We still rely on intensive labor to distress our floors, and we take pride in the quality of our work.
The popularity of handscraped floors continues to grow every year, and we want you to understand why. Whether installing new hardwoods or refinishing existing hardwoods we are here to serve you.
Both installations went very well. This company is very experienced and very efficient. This labor intensive process goes so fast mainly because they have crew members that specialize in different aspects of the installation and finishing processes. I love my floors so much. They even put a new coat of poly on my office floor that was installed prior to us purchasing our home. I found the name of this company from my next door neighbor who used them to put wood floors in her entire house. My neighbor could not say enough about them. After we had our family room done, another neighbor several doors down wanted to install wood floors in her house. She went through a long bidding process and used John Powell's Hand Scraped Floor company and just loves, loves, loves her floors. They did a beautiful job extending an existing 13-year old wood floor in her foyer into her living room, dining room, and kitchen. You can't tell the old floor from the new floor. Absolutely beautiful work!
Description of Work: I hired John Powell's Hand Scraped Floors company to put solid wood floors into my home. The first time I used this company, John came out and quoted solid wood floors for our family room and our dining room/living room combination. We opted to do the family room first in September of 2012 and the floors turned out so, so beautiful that we had John and his crew come back and not only do our dining room/living room, but also our master bedroom in April of 2013. He used solid red oak #1 wood that had to be acclimated to our home for about a week or two before installation. For the family room, we had the floor installed first and then let it acclimate before the sanding, staining, and poly steps. For the other rooms on the 2nd go around, we had them deliver the wood and let it acclimate in a pile so that we could get everything done in one shot over the course of a few days. The crew was very experienced and knew exactly what they were doing. We saw the same crew members both times we used them including the foreman named Omar. First, they pulled up our carpeting and got rid of it for us. Then they scraped the foundation clean and put down heavy duty plastic to prevent moisture coming up through our concrete foundation. The next step was to install a plywood subfloor and then they added another moisture barrier over the plywood. They installed the floor with such expertise. I was amazed at watching them them work. After the wood was installed and sanded, they filled in the cracks in the joints and other small imperfections in the wood with a special fill. In my case, they saw some imperfections that required new wood planks and replaced them. After filling the joints, they sanded the floor again to create a very beautiful and smooth floor. (We opted for a smooth floor, not hand scraped.) Then, they brought in their staining crew who matched the stain to my kitchen cabinets perfectly. After the stain was dry, they applied a coat of polyurethane and let it dry over night. The next day, they buffed the floor before applying the next coat of polyurethane. They said that we could not walk on the floor for at least 72 hours and recommended to not put any rugs down for at least two weeks. They also said not to use any cleaning products for two weeks. We have beautiful wood floors that have added value to our home. They charged $7.75 per square foot. They also added shoe moulding in our dining and living room and took all doors off the hinges and filed them down because the wood adds some thickness to the floor. In my family room and bedroom, they put back my same moulding taking good care of it when reinstalling it.
