When Penoco first opened its doors in April of 1988, founders Donald Peno and Timothy Sommer wanted to provide their customers with unbeatable service. Not just any service but a service no one else in the environmental contracting industry would be able to match. By continuously offering the best quality of work, along with the most courteous and professional experience, their business quickly grew and to date, has resulted in nearly 7,000 successful jobs. By 1996, Penco had grown immensely, taking on countless jobs and hiring several more employees. Over the past 25 years, Penoco has presented superior service to residential homes, offices, churches, hospitals, and schools. They have been known and trusted for their experience and excellence in asbestos building inspection and abatement, mold inspection and remediation, radon testing and mitigation, and lead-based paint testing, along with interior demolition, shot blasting, floor preparation, and building inspections. Lead Testing and Removal questions, answered by experts

Exterior paint contains a higher level of VOCs, which can be dangerous if you’re exposed to it for a long period of time. The good news is that paint’s toxicity reduces significantly once fully dried and cured. Do not keep open exterior paint cans in your home, basement, or garage, exposing your household to harmful chemicals over time.

How you test for lead in your water depends on the source of your home's water supply. If you have municipal water, your local water system may offer to test the water for free or may connect you to a lab that will perform the testing.

If you have a private well that provides drinking water, you are responsible for testing it for lead. Look for a lab that is accredited by your state's Department of Environmental Protection to perform the test.

Lead toxicity comes from inhaling lead or consuming it. Before the 1980s, when the government banned lead from consumer use, it could be found in paint, plumbing, pipes, ceramics, and even gasoline. Lead paint is toxic for the same reason lead itself is toxic, which is why lead poisoning from paint presents the same as lead poisoning from water or food sources, with a slight increase in respiratory symptoms vs. digestive symptoms. Lead paint is most dangerous when it’s old and peeling, cracking, or otherwise disturbed. This increases the concentration in the air and, therefore, in breathable air.

Professional testing for lead paint costs about $300, ranging from about $250 to $700, depending on the square footage, accessibility, and location. However, testing for lead paint with a DIY home-testing kit costs about $25, but doesn’t guarantee accurate results. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends using a lead test kit that complies with the Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule, which has strict criteria for ensuring a more accurate reading.

Common home surfaces to test for lead include:

  • Walls

  • Windows

  • Doors

  • Molding and trim

  • Railings

No, a standard home inspection includes the basics and does not offer lead paint testing. Professional lead paint inspectors need specific licenses to perform these inspections, which not all home inspectors have. If you suspect lead paint in the home you are about to purchase, you will need to pay separately to have that done. If the findings come back positive, you may be able to negotiate with the buyer to cover the cost of the removal.
