Established in 1995. Groundworks is a family owned and operated landscaping contractor, based in Hastings, Minnesota, with a reputation for beautiful, long-lasting landscapes and hardscapes.

"Small customers are a no-go for them. Of course, we did not know this until weeks after being in email correspondence, sending them photos of ideas, having them out for a site visit, and receiving a written quote for work from them. They wasted our time in a colossal way. If your job isn't going to make them $$$, don't bother contacting them and if you do contact them for a job, be ready for your verbal estimate given at the site visit to be quite different that the written one. We know how to hire companies and others have the foresight to be honest and not waste time - if the job is too small, they just say so at the initial contact point. Not this business. They will waste your time and then after weeks of discussion and effort on everyone's part, just say, "No thanks. We can't make enough money from your job." And you are left wondering, "What just happened here?" This occurred after we asked them why their written quote was $600+ higher than the verbal estimate they gave at the site visit. When we asked them why, their response was to walk away (politely, of course, but still...). Most businesses give a verbal ballpark and when the actual written quote comes in, it's within range of that verbal quote. Not the case here. There was nothing in the ballpark of the initial verbal quote. So that is confusing too for a potential customer. And when you ask "Why?" rather than discuss more, they bolt. While companies need to make a profit, and we understand this, Groundworks just does not show respect for the "little guy" needing a small job done and apparently it is okay to waste peoples' time and make believe they matter as a potential customer. PROS: When they did come for the site visit - they were on-time. Their email response time was good too. And, Gary is friendly and helpful. He was able to see some grading issues we needed to correct, which we appreciate. CONS: The level of professionalism of treating a customer's time respectfully is absent. Be forewarned, verbal quotes may vary widely from written ones. OVERALL: We won't be looking to them in the future when we DO have larger jobs. So short-sighted. We won't be recommending them either."

We are a family owned business with 6 fulltime employess, we specialize in restoration, and new concrete and landscape projects throughout the metro.

"Tracer determined a dry creek bed would correct the wet area in our back yard. They completed the work, adding a rock pile in front of the dry creek bed, which was not agreed upon. This solution did not fix the problem. Our back yard is still wet, grass does not grow and it is very unsightly. When we contacted Tracer landscaping they were resistive to listen and correct the problem stating it was not their issue. The representative has abandoned our project, has not returned phone calls and we are seeking a different landscaping company for help to correct. Our back yard is a mess! The french drain was not installed correctly and we struggled to get sod to grow. Again Tracer landscaping stated it was not their problem. I would not recommend this landscaping company for any project."

E-Z Landscaping provides professional landscaping services including hardscapes and softscapes. We have been doing landscaping for 25+ years. Previous to that we had a nursery/greenhouse business. We have Master Gardner status and are licensed with the State of Minnesota. MN Dept of Agri. Cert# 20163625

"It is so unfortunate that we hired Ken to do our project. It has been nothing but a major headache. Ken is not good at communication and never completed the job. The part of the job that had been completed was done poorly and with cheap product. With this we will need to hire another company to come in and complete the project and fix the disaster and unsafe situation he created. Safety concerns and poor workmanship that were reported to Ken the business owner have continued to be ignored and not addressed. The BBB is involved and he is not responding to them as well. Next steps will be to take him to court for resolution. I strongly advise all to not consider him for your project! Nothing but a nightmare!!!"

Lawn irrigation services FAQs

While watering your lawn by hand might save you money upfront, installing and using a lawn irrigation system does save you money over time. You are less likely to overwater your lawn with a professional irrigation system, which will cause a reduction in water usage. These systems use the right amount of water without waste. In addition, watering your lawn the correct amount will also help prevent different fungi from growing, saving you money in fungi removal costs.

Lawn irrigation is the process of getting water to your lawn, grass and all, for it to grow. There are five main types of lawn irrigation methods:

  • Manual irrigation puts you in charge of the flow of water. Using a sprinkler head on your hose is best to evenly distribute the water across your entire lawn. This doesn’t take much time but requires you to be physically outside holding the hose.

  • Above-ground sprinklers attach to your hose and rotate or oscillate around your lawn. Since these are above-ground, they’ll need to be moved when it’s time to mow, and depending on the size of your property, you might need to move it around your yard for full coverage.

  • In-ground sprinklers are flush with the ground when not in use but pop up above the ground level when it's time to water the lawn. Piping for these sprinklers is all found underground, and there are different types of sprinkler heads for different uses and lawn sizes.

  • Drip irrigation involves drip lines that are more efficient than sprinklers for more extensive lawns. This involves a lot of digging since they are installed underground, but it makes it easy for you to mow.

  • Rainwater collection and irrigation uses nature’s precipitation to water your lawn. This option might not be available in every area since semi-reliable rainfall is needed, though the barrels for this system can range from 15 gallons to 10,000 gallons or more.

Even though having a lawn irrigation system to water your lawn is efficient, you do not want to run it daily. It’s best to run your system two to three times a week. The length of time to run your system varies on factors like wind, temperature, and the variety of your grass, but 10 to 20 minutes each time is generally preferred. If you water too frequently, you’ll drown your grass and plants.

The cost of a lawn sprinkler system is $2,550 for the average homeowner. However, this price can range from $350 to $5,000 or more, depending on the type of sprinkler system you install, the size of your yard, and the type of sprinkler heads you choose. For example, rotating or oscillating sprinkler heads are more expensive than stationary ones, making the cost for one sprinkler head $2.50 to $30 each. Likewise, a yard that is 1/4 of an acre in size averages a total average price of $2,460; however, a one-acre yard averages a cost of $9,840.

The total time it takes to install a lawn irrigation system is roughly one to two days. This includes digging trenches for any necessary underground piping, placing the piping, wiring, sprinkler heads, and valves, and connecting your sprinkler system to your water supply. If you have a lawn larger than one acre, or if there are any municipality regulations that extend the project, you can expect the timeline to be closer to two days.
