Drywall anchors aren’t necessary if there’s a stud behind the wall where you’ll be working. Studs are strong enough to support screws on their own, but they don’t run throughout the wall. If you’re doing a project that involves the entire wall and not just one part (like hanging a small painting or photo), odds are you’ll need drywall anchors at some point in the process. 

Yes, it matters which side of drywall you use. One side is smooth, and the other is rough. The smooth side should be facing outward, toward the room, while the rough side should be hidden and facing the studs and framing of the house. The smooth side will be easier to apply tape, joint compound, and, later, paint to.

Drywall mudding can be done in one day if the project is small and the desired effect isn’t too complex. If you need multiple layers of mud, one day may not be realistic. But a single room that requires little more than joint compound on the seams and screws can be done in a day or two.

Drywall installation costs around $2,000 on average, but some projects cost as low as $400, while larger or more complicated installations can cost $6,000 or more. The most important cost factor is the size of the room or area, as many contractors charge on a per-square-foot basis. You should also consider the complexity of the installation. There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.
