Our experience with New Leaf Construction in December led us back to hiring them again for a few additional projects we wanted completed outside this spring. The remodel of our firm over the winter was very successful and it was a pleasure to work with their crew. Their professionalism showed throughout the entirety of the project, from the quality of their work, sensitivity to our timeline, accommodating the needs of our business with as little interruption as possible, cleanliness of their work area, attention to detail, and staying on budget. I highly recommend New Leaf Construction.

Ian and his crew were very good and did everything they said they would do quickly and professionally. The project came in on budget and time. They worked around the schedule at the church which was very important to us. The job site was kept clean and there was not interference with the activities of the church. We were very happy with the work and would definitely hire them again for any new projects.

This was a wonderful company to work with. New Leaf Construction performed repair to the exterior of our art gallery building. The damage was caused by significant rot / water issues. We have very high expectations and we are quite meticulous in the upkeep of our properties. New Leaf far exceeded customer service expectations and by far was the most responsive and courteous company that we have worked with in Maine. The crew was responsible and respectful. The contract process was quite clear and detailed. The billing procedures and follow up was superb. The work was completed to perfection.

Very disappointing. After numerous discussions and back and forth for months we finally got a commitment date for November. We discussed at length the importance of wanting to match the rest of the house and provide shelter from the elements for the tools and wood; We also contracted to have our front porch risers replaced; When the team did show up, the one worker was late and we did not receive all the hours promised - it rained one afternoon so granted no work then but that time was never made up. The workmanship is shoddy and the job was obviously rushed; The only reason the risers were done correctly and the look of the enclosure matches the house is due to my spouse who had to micro manage the job due to the lack of professionalism and workmanship. We were so unhappy we took it to small claims court; unfortunately the judgement was not in our favor due to particular and loose contract wording so New Leaf squeaked by. Nonetheless, court ruling not withstanding I would not recommend New Leaf for anything complex and we will not be using them again. We paid not a small amount of money (close to $8000) for this. We would have done better by purchasing a shed from Home Depot. We feel quite taken advantage of.
Description of Work: We asked for our car port to be enclosed to provide shelter for wood and lawn equipment.

This is a duplicate negative review provided by the spouse of the previous customer, and should be removed by Angie's List. To respond to this customer's allegations, I will copy and paste the wording from the customer's proposal, which was signed by the customer. To the reader: YOU be the judge of whether or not our wording was "loose". My only question to the woman who wrote this review is this: You say that we discussed at length the importance of having this project match the rest of the house... if that is the case, why did you run out and buy cheap vinyl siding when the rest of your house is sided with beautiful stained cedar shingles??? Overhang Enclosure: Begin by installing a pressure-treated (PT) 2x10 "plate" on the cement between the existing posts that support the roof of the overhang on the outer wall of the garage (this plate shall be tapered to encourage the water to run way from the wall and out over the edge of the cement slab). Install new 2x4 PT framing between the posts on the long wall and the rear wall to create the framework to enclose the overhang. Install PT framing on the driveway end of the overhang, to allow for the installation of custom-made doors that allow access to the enclosed overhang. As needed, trim back the ends of the beam that supports the rafters of the overhang, and install 2x6 re-enforcements to support the last rafters on each end (this should allow room for sheathing and siding on the gable ends). Once the PT framing is in place enclose the framing with Advantech plywood and Typar house wrap. Install [Member Information Removed] (three) Matthews Brothers white, awning-style vinyl windows approximately 48" wide by 24" tall, with a "three-light, cottage-style" grille (includes window screens). One of the windows is to be installed beside the entry door to the enclosed space, and the other two are to be installed in the opposing gable end. Install white PVC window trim, door trim, and cornerboard trim as needed. Build and install two custom doors that close in tandem to enclose the overhang area. These are to be "barn-style" doors with an astragal to deter the elements from blowing in, however, this pricing does not include weatherstripping of any kind, and it is to be expected that there will be air gaps around the doors (they will NOT provide a complete seal from the elements). The body of the doors shall be constructed with vertical, 1x6 V-match in Western Red Cedar, untreated. Lastly, install siding that the customer has provided (fasteners provided by the contractor). The goal of this project is to enclose the overhang area with a neat, clean, tastefully-finished look and a material selection that will be low-maintenance and long-lasting. This price includes all labor and materials (except for the siding the customer is providing). Note: This work includes replacing three wooden risers on the front steps, with new, white, PVC trim with hidden fasteners.

Description of Work: This was a relatively large and complicated job, renovating the 130-year-old front part of our house and involving: floor leveling, plumbing, electrical, floor work, new fixtures, storm windows, tiling, and painting. The workers and subcontractors were, with two exceptions, competent and pleasant to be with and conscientious about getting things right. Our big problems were: delays in getting the project started, the unexpected length of the project (compared to what we had been told to expect), and the length of time it took to repair the work of one subcontractor. The main work was supposed to begin in March 2015, but the contractor said he was ill and would have to delay. Fearing that this delay would make it impossible to properly entertain house guests expected between late June and mid-August, we asked to put off the work until fall. However, we gave in to the urgings of the contractor to either do part now and the rest in the fall or to do it all in the spring, assuring us that the essentials could be done and the house available for entertaining guests. It didn't work out that way, and the final work wasn't completed until mid-November, forcing us to rent other accommodations for four weeks during the high-cost summer season at the cost of several thousand dollars. I would say that the contractor is a smart, hard-working, and well-meaning young man with a relatively small staff, who can do a good job for a decent price, especially on a less complex job. He certainly did a totally satisfactory job for us earlier on a smaller project replacing the sheathing on the back part of our house. However, if someone has any time constraints, they might be better served by a larger contracting firm that will charge anywhere from a quarter to half more but have more resources to get the work done much closer to your deadline.

Thank you for the kind words and compliments you have offered in your review. We completely understand and respect your point of view as our customer, and we welcome this review as a chance to introspectively audit not just our communication with our customers, but more specifically the effectiveness of clearly communicating what our customers can expect. We are sad to hear that you do not feel you would hire us again, especially given all the projects we have done for you over the years that have gone very well, including the extensive repairs to framing, sheathing, and siding on the back half of your house. In this case, due to a miscommunication, we were unaware that the scope of the paint work on this project was actually more than twice as large as what was covered in the written contract. While accomplishing this work is not outside of our abilities, it took twice as long to get the paint work done due to everything that was added. We feel that we explained accurately what the customer could expect in terms of the timeline, but once the additional paint work was added, the original timeline was no longer valid. However, from our point of view, the customer still expected the original timeline could be maintained. Yes, it is accurate that we had difficulties with a plumber that we used as a subcontractor. By the end of this project, that plumber was fired and we brought on a new plumber that has not only fixed the issues that occurred on this project, but has also performed admirably on every project since. It is unfortunate that the previous plumber made the mistakes that he did, but we stood behind our work and fully corrected those issues. Towards the end of this project, we were frustrated by the customer refusing to allow us to work on the house (even the exterior) unless they were home. The customer would email us with very restrictive windows of time where we could return to complete small punch-list items. It took several tries to get our schedule to line up with what the customer would allow, but we finally were able to make it work. To say that we did not complete the project until November is not accurate. We finished the interior work (including all the paint work) and gave the house back to the customer in July. Due to the customer's restrictions of when we could or could not come back, we were unable to get back to install replacement storm windows until November. In remodeling, there are projects that come along every great once in a while that do not go the way we would like them to. When these occur, we work hard to correct the issues that arise, and we continually strive to learn from these issues so we can prevent them in the future. No matter the "hiccups" we encounter, we never stop working to better understand why and how these things happen in an effort to deliver a better product to all of our customers. Again, we are grateful for this review, and we are well on our way to using it as a training tool to improve our company. We look forward to the challenging projects that lie ahead, knowing we have yet another tool in our belt to help us do a better job. Respectfully, -Ian R (Owner)

New Leaf does beautiful work. The contracts are detailed. I believe that the prices are very reasonable. I came from Denver where everything would have been much higher. The workmen are very professional and always clean up after which I liked. The end results are always just exactly what I wanted. New Leaf is very popular and it is wise to book well in advance. The only problem I had was not their fault. Dream Kitchen lied about the availability of a vanity during the remodeling of the master bath, delaying the completion by months. In the interim, New Leaf rigged up a vanity which made the bathroom usable for me, but made a lot of extra work for them. I am on their schedule for a tree removal when the ground freezes.
Description of Work: Over a period of years New Leaf has worked in the basement, on the deck, made the shed usable and healthy for dogs, built a dog pen, remodeled the master bathroom and the powder room and replaced rotten trim and chimney on the outside of the house.

Description of Work: New Leaf Construction is fabulous. They replaced the shingles on our mansard roof. We decided together to use a roofing product that looks like slate. We were extremely happy with the work that was done. Each day the crew cleaned up, explained the next step and kept us informed regarding what time the next subcontractor would arrive the next day. Everyone was punctual, professional and very proficient with the job they were hired to do. We were thrilled that the whole repair job, which included sheet rocking and painting, only took a week from start to finish. And the quality of the finished product was outstanding. We highly recommend Ian Robertson and his crew at New Leaf for any construction related job you may have. In fact, we've discovered part of our deck has collapsed, again due to the abundance of snow, but are confident Ian and New Leaf Construction will be able to handle the job and will get our deck repaired in a professional and efficient way. We wouldn't call anyone else.
Description of Work: Due to a heavy snowfall on our roof this winter and some poor workmanship by the original builder, a severe buckle was created in the sheet rock above our fireplace. New Leaf Construction came in, recommended an engineer to assess the situation and after getting a report from the engineer proceeded to repair the problem in an efficient and timely manner. Ian and his crew were very sensitive to the fact that our entire living room was unlivable during this repair and made sure subcontractors were lined up to complete the sheet rocking and painting in less than a week!

Currently, we are working with New Leaf Const on our third project in two years. Our property has needed significant upgrading, and there has been no question as to who will do it. Evaluations and explanations have always been thorough and balanced, including discussion of potential difficulties that may be encountered---of which there have been several. In one instance, engineers were promptly engaged when structural weaknesses were uncovered when preparing to install massive sliding glass doors. Subcontractors have all been of the highest quality. New Leaf Const is characterized by its integrity, quality workmanship, thoroughness, congeniality, and concern for the client's needs.
Description of Work: Project 1---Renovations including sliding glass doors, new bathroom, new basement walls and ceiling, new roof and skylight, insulation, repairs to deck and barn Project 2---Structural support for summer cottage, plus new windows and doors. No job is too large or small. All jobs are treated with the same care and attention. His estimates are accurate and detailed, with no surprises. This is the best contractor we have ever had. We had a leak into our porch. He took a lot of time researching the problem, and called for assistance from a state of the art energy company. He received no money for this job, but stayed around so that he could learn for future projects. We received new insulation and properly vented fans, as well as, a new energy audit and insulation. Ian did not just jump into an unfamiliar situation. He is extremely picky about who he hires. He only uses the best sub-contractors. They are friendly, courteous, respectful, neat, and clean up each day. The agreed to deadline is met. No callbacks are needed, everything is done right the first time. The quality of the work is absolutely superb.
Description of Work: He converted an old rotting porch into a beautiful sun room. He also put in a proper door and staircase for our basement from scratch, added new windows in our garage.
