"I asked Culligan to come to my home to do the annual neutralizer servicing, so that I can put my house up for sale. They were supposed to come on Friday 4/11. When they showed up there was a landscaping truck in the driveway so they just turned around and left. They didn't call me, they didn't ask the landscapers to move the truck they just left. I explained that I cannot list my house for sale until this is taken care of and Paul apologized and said that the next time they could get out there would be the following Friday the 18th. My house is currently vacant and I live far away so I needed the technician to make sure to run the water for a bit after the service because the service stirs up the sediment and the water runs cloudy for a little while after it is serviced. I didn't want prospective buyers to see cloudy water coming out of the faucet. I received a phone call from Paul on Friday saying they didn't know what had happened but they were running the water and the water just stopped and they think something happened with the well pump. He said Kyle the technician turned all the water off and left because he didn’t know what happened. Paul was able to tell me that Kyle flushed the line by turning the garden hose on and leaving it running until the water stopped coming out. I could see on the camera he had it on full blast for a half hour. He drained the well completely dry. Anyone who has any experience with well water knows you can't run a faucet open for that long like that. I told Paul that someone needed to get out there first thing on Monday and turn the water back on and make sure that the pump was still operational and he hadn't burnt it out, otherwise I would need to get plumbers out there to fix it. Paul assured me that this would happen. I called Culligan Monday morning to confirm and spoke with Matt who had no idea what was going on and said he needed to talk to the technician to find out what happened on Friday. I told him I had already had this entire conversation with Paul and Matt had no knowledge of it. Matt said the technician would be there that day. Nobody showed up. I spoke with Matt again on Tuesday and he said that it would be taken care of. I reminded him again that I had the electronic door lock programmed to the Culligan phone number for the access code so that his technician could get in whenever he got there. I received a phone call later that day from someone else at Culligan saying the door was locked and they couldn't get in. I reminded them that I had already given them the code for the lock and they said that doesn't show up on the work order so the technician had no idea. The communication problems in this organization are unfathomable. I could see on the cameras that the gentleman was in and out in 8 minutes and this occurred around noon. I received no phone call from anybody on Tuesday letting me know if everything was OK. I called Wednesday morning to find out what had happened and spoke with Matt and he said everything was fine, the pump was operational and all the water was turned back on. I had a family member go out to the house today to make sure that was accurate and it was not. The water appears to be operational everywhere in the house except for one sink and toilet. My friend tried everything they could think of to figure out what the technician did and where the water was shut off but was unsuccessful. The shoddiness of the work and terrible communication has caused me incredible anxiety and frustration and I now have to hire a plumber to go figure out what these people did and fix it as I do not want them anywhere near my house ever again."

The license requirements for water softener installation depend on your location. Some municipalities require that the installer hold a plumbing license, some require a permit and an inspection, but no license for the installer, and some require a permit and a license for the installer. Regardless of the local laws in your area, it’s always a good idea to hire a licensed plumber or installer. These pros will install your system properly and have the experience to size the system appropriately. Use Angi’s state licensing tool to check your installer’s license status.
The cost to install a water softener system is $1,500 on average, ranging between $200 and $6,000. The labor for water softener work typically costs between $150 and $1,000, so you can add that to your equipment costs to get an accurate total. Your price will depend on many factors, including the following:
System capacity
Home size
Water hardness levels
Type of water softener
Presence of electricity in the installation area
Local permit costs
Water softeners are worth the money if you live in an area with hard water. Hard water is safe to drink, but it poses serious threats to your plumbing system. The minerals in hard water will gradually build up on the inside walls of your pipes, reducing water flow to your fixtures. The minerals can also gradually corrode your plumbing system, reduce its lifespan, and increase the risk of leaks. Hard water also makes soap and detergent less effective. Water softener systems can solve all these issues, making them a great investment.
It’s possible to install a water softener yourself, but we don’t recommend it. Water softeners require working with copper pipes and electrical wiring, neither are suitable tasks for most DIYers. Plus, working with water and electricity together is dangerous and could pose a risk to your safety. Water softeners also need to be calibrated so that they don’t make your water too soft, as soft water poses just as many risks as hard water. Overall, it’s well worth hiring a local water softener installer to place your water softener system.
Your water softener size is based on your total household water consumption. In most cases, you can assume the average household member will use around 75 gallons per day. Multiply that by the number of people in your home, then multiply by 10 (for the typical grains per gallon). You’ll get a number in grains that should help roughly size your water softener. However, it’s best to hire a professional to install your system and use more exact numbers, like your exact average water consumption per day and starting water hardness.
