We had a very good experience with My Handyman, beginning with the visit to assess the project and give us a quote. When they came back to do the work, it was all completed for the exact amount that was quoted. We found a couple other items that needed to be done, and the handyman was willing to complete those for reasonable additional cost. We were surprised to have it all done in one trip. The man who was assigned to the job was competent to do all the work, and he showed skill and good judgment with his methods. We were delightedshow more

Overall it was a good experience but it took a few weeks longer and $500 more than original estimate. I called to obtain an estimate, but the representative would not provide a written estimate until an agreement was signed to use Thompson (a three day cancellation period) was provided. After speaking with other contractors, I was unable to find anyone I trusted that could start within one week. Once the agreement was signed, a written estimate was prepared and provided to my insurance agent. Additionally, Thompson provided immediate services to remove water damaged carpet and provide blowers to dry flooring. A pre-construction walk-through detailing services agreed upon in the estimate, agreed upon with the insurance company and myself occurred within one week of signing agreement. During this meeting, carpet and paint colors were selected or samples were provided for further consideration and we faxed Thompson our choices within two days. A few days later, our insurance company provided a check to commence materials' purchase. Work to tear out drywall and insulation commenced about one week after receiving insurance check, even though it was my understanding that work would start one week after signing agreement. Work progressed quickly, Thompson has a large staff of professionals experienced in fire and storm restoration. During the course of demolition, a bedroom door was damaged and some wall paper was torn, but Thompson agreed to replace these items promptly. After the demolition stage, drywall, insulation and the initial coat of paint was applied to all rooms affected promptly. Then there was a period of time (one week) when it appeared that little work was being accomplished and they were waiting on the carpet before a second coat of paint was applied. The original estimate for work duration was two weeks but it ended up taking about 4 weeks. We were out of our home a total of 39 days, but I do not believe that any other contractor could have done the job quicker or would have been as professional. Upon completion, we were happy with the work and the employees were professional and were responsive to our comments and concerns. All went extremely well. John went above and beyond original plan while keeping original estimate amount to create a beautiful, finished living space in our basement. John consulted with us frequently, providing both updates and suggesting improvements not listed in original estimate. Previous to this job, we have contracted with John to refurbish two bathrooms, work in kitchen, electrical lighting fixtures, and painting. He is very professional, punctual, competent, talented, and friendly. We highly recommend John and his company. Will came out with his spiel about the company being all employees with no subs, this is a lie. The team they sent were subs. They took longer than expected and the work seemed ok, but there was damage caused that wasn't repaired(wooden door with a huge scrape and ceiling tile ruined in the basement). Now their drywall is cracking and there are several nail pops coming thru. Will sent someone to remud, but refused to have them sand and prime and paint saying it wasn't part of the contract. I had to pay someone to do that work, so now I shouldn't have to repay to have it done again when it was their shoddy work. Avoid this companyshow more

They did a really good job. I don't have any complaints about them. The leak was the only problem I had but they were responsive on that. Everything was fine and I was happy with it. They said it was going to take them 3 days and it took 3 days. They had a backlog on their orders and it took 6 weeks for the order to come in. They ordered the tub from California so they had to order it and get it made out there. Those tubs are very expensive but I thought it was a good deal. We didn't have problems since then. The 2 guys that came out were very polite and cleaned up after themselves. They were very personableshow more

The Baker Group was outstanding. It could not have gone any better. We interviewed five companies with four coming to our house to look at the project. We liked Phil right from the beginning. He was easy to talk with and would honestly express his opinions when asked. He told us what he thought would work in our situation and what would not. He always ended by saying, "It is your bathroom. Make it the way you want it." Every vendor he directed us to for materials was great to work with. All were very helpful, fairly priced and had nothing but good things to say about the quality of the Baker Group. Phill did the custom cabinetry and his brother Mike did everything else. Both are protectionists taking pride in their work. Communication was great. We always knew what the next step would be and when they needed materials. The project took about six weeks. We felt very comfortable having them in our house. Mike even let the dogs out for us if we were running late! It was like having your friends working for you. You can't beat the quality of the Baker Group's craftsmanship. And to top it all off, they are competitively priced. We could not be more satisfied and very proud of our bathroom. We have another remodeling project coming up and will be hiring them againshow more

The contractors were professional and would even strike up conversation with my kids each day. They helped us save money where we could (moving services in and out of the original quote), and even connected me with vendors where they had preferred relationships (shower doors, tile, vanity, & granite). Lots of plumbing work...dismantle old jacuzzi and re-run plumbing for new washer and dryer hook-up. New shower plumbing and new sink plumbing...as well as toilet replacement. Lots of electrical work...dismantle of old jacuzzi, re-run of new washer n dryer electrical wiring, new canned lights, new bathroom fan, and new sink lights. Lots of tile work...floor to ceiling tile + the entire bathroom floor tile...all perfectly done! Didn't even need quarter-round because the tile job was so good! We felt so good with the work that we had them start to quote our kitchen while they were there. Once we are ready to do the kitchen, we will definitely have them back! WOW!!!! We have been enjoying our new basement for about two months and I still sit back and admire the craftsmanship of the work completed. Phil, Tommy, and Benito are true professionals. They converted a cold, tired, awkward basement into a dream space where we now spend the majority of our down time. What once was a dark corner of our laundry room is now a 200 sq. ft. full bath with a walk-in shower with floor to ceiling tile. What once was a storage room is now a family room with a custom entertainment built-in and a dry bar with custom painted cabinetry, granite top, and a built-in stainless steel beverage center. In addition we added a play room for our son that is the perfect size and feel. He loves it. During the initial site review I explained to Phil that I wanted the basement to have the the same look and feel as any other room in our house. Being an old basement I knew this was going to be a tall order, but Phil did not appear to be concerned. Now I know why. Our basement now looks like it could be in a home that was built last week. He really knocked it out of the park. The work itself took roughly 60 days and was actively managed by Phil every step of the way. Daily texts, phone calls, and/or visits by Phil, Tommy, or Benito kept the project on track and left us well-informed. The attention to detail and the ability to stay on budget was uncanny. Each phase required minor deviations from the plan due to the quirkiness of an old basement. If an issue cropped up I was informed and presented with options to get around the issue and stay on track with our plans and budget. Rather than saying something couldn't be done, they found a way to do it. My wife and I felt completely comfortable giving the guys open access to our home during the entire process. I work from home and travel and also have two large dogs that are not the friendliest at times. We were able to work out a system that kept everyone working and living in a comfortable environment while the job was in progress. We plan to do more work to our kitchen over the next year and I will ONLY work with Baker Group from here on outshow more

We found Basements Unlimited/Al Cloern on Angieslist and we could not be happier. From the first time my husband met with Al to discuss the scope of our project, we felt completely at ease. During the remodel, we were in and out of town throughout the process and Al was great at communicating with us via email, text and phone as needed. When we had an issue with our heating system during the cold snap in March, Al personally went to our property after 11PM to turn on the faucets and check the temperature inside to make sure we did not have any pipes burst until we could get the HVAC company out to repair the issue the next day. The workmen were all pleasant and professional and we are really enjoying our newly remodeled basement. Al did a great job on planning the layout - It is so much more functional and attractive than the outdated basement we started with. Also, Al stuck to his bid. The only additional costs were for additional items which we requested, or for those which were needed to meet code that he could not have known about until he got into the job. And for those additional items, the charges were more than fair. (We added a counter to the laundry room, went with a higher cost flooring throughout the basement than originally planned, and also upgraded the vanity in the bathroom). They also built a custom shelving/cabinet unit in the wall flanking the shower in the new bathroom, added cabinet doors under the laundry counter to conceal plumbing, and completely finished a storage area under the stairway in the bedroom (flooring, paint and lighting!). They (The Basement Guys) were unprofessional and down right insulting. There were so many disappointments throughout the experience that I've listed them in bullets below. - After a dozen requests to see a final drawing of the project, the best I got was a sketch on a piece of scratch paper. This lack of clarity between us and the workers led to several re-works in the project and of course, the price. Most times they replied "we'll get it to you." Two calls regarding this final drawing were not returned. - They made several promises during their sales pitch that turned out to be not true or were blatantly broken by their workers. They said that their material was developed by the Owens Corning Company - I later found out it was not. They said that no contractors that were not direct, background-checked employees of The Basement Guys, would be in our house without one of their employees supervising - my wife came home in the middle of the day to a random electrician in our basement and no Basement Guy employee to be found. They said the project would take 1 to 2 weeks - it took 6. They said it was "no mess" - there was plenty of dirt and dust. - When they were "finished" with the work, there was dirt all over the walls and ceiling tiles. Several of the tiles were chipped. EVERY seam was blatantly visible - and they promote this on their website as a "SEAMLESS SYSTEM". When my wife brought this do the attention of the project manager (PM) he said "You just know where to look. Once you get furniture down here, you won't be able to tell." - The PM and I had a payment agreement: 1/3rd up front, 1/3rd half way, and 1/3rd once I was satisfied. He pressured my wife into early payment when I was not home after he said the job was "finished." - When I had the project manager back out to discuss my disappointments he was 30 minutes late - this was typical. After voicing my concerns, he agreed with every one of them. He apologized for the mess, the terrible looking seams, the random contractor in our home, pressuring my wife into early payment, and the insulting comments about not noticing the seams. He said that he was just "walking the company line." The supervisor's offer to make amends, was to come in and install our TV wall-mount - assuming that I would ever let The Basement Guys in my home again. Overall, I've waited a month to calm down and still felt compelled to pay the Angie's List subscription fee and write this review. I simply would never want anyone I knew or cared about to be in a situation like we found ourselves with The Basement Guysshow more
