Kim Johnson is moving to Tucson area in Arizona in September 2024! She is no longer taking clients in the DC area. She will relocate her business on a smaller scale in the Green Valley area in Arizona. PROFILE: Kim will use her 20 years experience to assist you in creating a home that you love to be in and are proud to entertain in. She simplifies the design process and makes it fun and rewarding. Fees are by the hour with no time obligation. Decorating and design services can be minor, like a color consultation or suggesting home decorating plans for you to implement over time, or much more long term with guidance and assistance in all renovation and new construction projects. She specializes in bathroom renovations and kitchen design and can help you completely change your bathrooms and/or kitchen at a much lower cost than design build companies or even big box home improvement centers.

"Couldn’t have done the project without her! She worked with my ideals and enhanced them. She had amazing people to work with for the cabinets, counters, and installing and demo for everything. Would have been too overwhelmed to make decisions but with her years of experience she knew exactly what to do. She is really easy to work with. She has a great eye for design. I recommend her to all my friends."

I am a Maryland based Interior Designer who is proud to also be a retired Air Force veteran. I work with my clients with the same passion, integrity, and service that I gave to my country for 21 years. Ronald J Smith Interiors believes great design starts with the ability to listen, understand, and development of relationship with our clients. It is our job to take your thoughts and wishes and go beyond your expectations. I was a Fire Fighter while in the military, so I greatly understood the value and importance of someones home. It is crucial that I bring that same care, energy, and respect into every aspect of our projects. We look forward to working with you.

"He is the fourth designer that I interviewed and was the only one that understood my vision and got me, and that is why I worked with him. He has given me peace of mind with my project, and I'm still working with him and it has been a blessing for me!"

We pride our company on reliability, great communication, integrity and quality work. We are experts in our trade and will do our best to keep you as educated as we can on your particular project or task. We look forward to earning your business!

"I signed a contract for work to be completed in 4 weeks. 4 Months later, work was finally (mostly) done - but only with extreme nagging on my part and excessive excuses and push back. The contractor only came to the project site if his sub-contractors created an issue (which was often). They dropped my A/C unit down a 10 foot hole, they didn't finish half the projects they said they would and completed the other half incorrectly based on hand drawings and gestures because neither the contractor or I could speak the same language as the sub-contractors, they made promises to show up and never did. Worst of all, they used design plans from a previous contractor that were approved by the city - but didn't use those plans and never updated the plans. The city inspector came and did not pass the project due to this discrepancy, but Vladimir told me it had passed. The city told me the permit expired. So - now Vladimir won't answer my emails and I have to pay someone else to fix it all."

Unlike typical interior design companies, we have our own furniture factories located in Los Angeles and Bali. In addition to our in-house woodworking shops, allowing us to take customization to a whole new level. Our full-service capabilities — including CAD and 3-D space planning, color schedules, custom design and fabrication of furniture, contract grade furniture, cabinets and built-ins — mean we can turn any vision into reality.

"Chris Zoltan is the real deal. He is immensely talented and knows what he is doing. I was very nervous throughout the process. The final product by Zoltan Design was striking and distinctive. There were some glitches. For example, the dining chair heights are a bit too low for the dining table. But, overall, I love my living room and dining room space. If you are looking for inexpensive design, this is not the firm for you. Be ready to spend top dollar. If you are looking for quality, vision, and distinctiveness, than you will be satisfied with Zoltan Design."

Our dedicated team works closely with each homeowner, providing personalized design consultations and transparent communication throughout the entire renovation process. "Terrible experience. We contracted with Prime Custom (Kamil) to do a full bathroom and kitchen remodel in 2021 and we have had tons of issues. Their license # 2705166476 that they were operating under has been REVOKED as of May 2024. You can check this for yourself by going to the Virginia state website [*** Link removed ***] and entering the License # 2705166476. Yes, the name on the VA state website is different but they were operating externally as Prime Custom. As proof, I have attached a picture of the contract which shows the above License # , and Prime Custom's name. They are now operating under a different license # 2705173804 which I find highly unethical. I have already filed a complaint with the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation and they will investigate if any laws were broken. Before considering doing business with Prime Custom, or any other contractor, please ensure that you look up their license number on the above Virginia State website. Summary of my experience: - Bathroom: The shower has developed a major leak which is going through the bathroom floor into the lower level. See pictures. I am contracting with another company to fix, which is going to cost thousands of dollars. Kitchen - It failed gas and safety inspections multiple times. To this day, I am concerned about the structural integrity of the load bearing wall in the kitchen and am contracting with another company to fix. Hopefully, this review can save others from the extremely frustrating experience that I have gone through."

Interior design and decorating services FAQs

Most interior designers have at least a four-year degree, if not an advanced degree in interior design. Additionally, many states require interior designers to be licensed. If your state does not require licensing, interior designers can take a licensing exam with the National Council of Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ). Overall, licensing requirements vary from state to state, but most licenses require certain education levels and experience to qualify. To check the qualifications of your interior designer, use Angi’s state licensing tool.

The difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator is that the interior decorator focuses on the space’s colors, furniture, art, and finishes. An interior designer goes beyond that to plan and execute layouts, structural changes, and overall functionality in addition to aesthetics that the decorator manages. We recommend hiring an interior designer for major remodeling projects and hiring an interior decorator to establish or enhance your home’s interior style.

On average, hiring an interior designer costs about $8,200, ranging from $200 to $65,000, depending on where you live, the size of your home, and the type of decor. The total price tag of interior design services is based on whether they provide consultation and implementation as well as any specialty design services, such as home staging or digital design mock-ups. Residential interior designers typically charge an hourly rate of $50 to $200 per hour, or up to $500 per hour in areas with high demand.

Hiring an interior designer is often worth the investment, especially for larger projects beyond DIY interior design and project management skills. However, the decision to hire an interior designer depends on your budget and the size of the project. Some benefits of hiring an interior designer include:

  • Realizing the best layout and decor for optimal functionality of the space for your taste, budget, and lifestyle

  • Managing your project to keep the job on track and within budget

  • Assistance with home staging ahead of home sale

  • Serving as a point of contact for contractors

  • Accessing discounts from local suppliers

Before hiring an interior designer, ask a few questions to better understand how they work, what’s expected of you, and what they promise to deliver.

  • How long will the project take to complete?

  • What type of services do you offer?

  • Can you provide a project estimate?

  • Do you work with subcontractors?

  • Are you licensed or certified in this state?

  • Do you have a portfolio of previous work I can review?

  • May I contact your customer references?

  • How do you handle change orders?

  • How do you handle payment?
