I was nervous about hiring a contractor but Hugo was recommended by a friend. « Go with Hugo, he did a superb job of carpentry in my house ! ». I am so grateful to her! I did hire Hugo. As for his work, the words “top-notch”, “first-rate” come to mind. He and his crew are outstanding professionals. The whole construction was done with such care and proficiency. My husband and I are delighted with the result. Hugo’s work was not inexpensive but I did not want to end up with a car port ! Considering that we got exactly what we wanted, with the quality of both material and workmanship, we felt it was a fair deal. Also, I appreciated Hugo’s passion for his own work and the advice of an experienced builder. As a bonus, he was completely trustworthy, showing up when he said he would, meeting all date-lines, explaining small delays while waiting for Inspections from our County, etc… and taking care of “everything”, like permits or attending to last minute requests. "A couple of pieces of siding fell of the top of my house during a windstorm and since most siding companies only do whole exterior replacements, I called Mr. Handyman to get someone out to put the wind-blown siding back up. They said that they charge $168 for the first hour, and that if I already had the siding on hand, it shouldn't take more than an hour to put up. My technician arrived promptly at 9:00 AM, and within thirty minutes I knew that he was set to go well beyond the first hour. (I don't think this was the technician's fault by the way, I think its an administrative issue). Ultimately, putting up roughly 3 pieces of siding took two hours and thirty minutes! The work was good on visual inspection, but I was in no way prepared for the cost of the service (estimated at over $300). As a note, I previously had a section of siding replaced by a general contractor (who sourced and provided the siding) for the same amount and it took no more than 30 minutes. Luckily, my technician was sympathetic and charged me for only the first hour, but I think its really unfair to both the consumer and the technician that the front office is quoting times that are either a) completely unrealistic or b) that they have no intentions of being accountable to. A company that treats its clients and employees this poorly should not be patronized. Go to an independent handyman instead!"

Tipping a handyman is not a requirement or necessarily expected, as they should build a fair wage into the price of the job. However, some people will tip a handyman around $10 to $20 per hour or the equivalent of a day’s pay, depending on the size of the job. But it’s up to your discretion. There are no set rules for tipping a handyman service, but if they did a great job and you’re so inclined to tip, it’s encouraged and will likely be received with thanks.

A tip is not necessary. If you feel that a handyman did a great job for you, the best thing you can do for them is boost their reputation by leaving reviews on as many sites as possible and spreading by word of mouth how good they are. A tip is temporary but a reputation creates a business!

Yes, you should hire a handyman who’s licensed, certified, and insured, if possible. States have different requirements for handyman licensing, registration, and certifications. If licensing is required in your area, you may pay more for a licensed handyman with experience than one who is not licensed or certified, but you’re likely to get a better end result for your project. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local handymen guidelines.

Being certified and/or licensed typically provides the customer with a level of comfort when hiring a handyman, but is not always a guarantee of quality work. Ask the handyman to explain what his or her process to complete your project is, and if you hire this person, check on the work, ask questions, make suggestions. After all, it's your project, your money, and you deserve quality work.

Be aware that not every state requires or even provides a license for a handyman. Many handymen will not or cannot be licensed. If you want a general contractor, hire one (they will be licensed and bonded/insured). Understand what you usually get when you hire a handyman and it is NOT a general contractor.
