Serious drain cleaning I would refer to Rooter King, a local family operation, 828-252-2041.
Description of Work: He complained about working with Angie’s List. He complained about doing the job. I would not use him again. He had to come back again to correct stuff that he didn’t do right. He didn’t want to go under the house to do some of the work.

Again, we were incredibly satisfied with Peter's workmanship and professionalism... Very high quality work and we will be calling on him to install a whole house water filter. Peter Johnson is the kind of plumber who has been at it for a long time and takes so much pride in his work. I will call on him for any plumbing issues in the future as well as recommending him to anyone who may need a plumber.
Description of Work: Peter Johnson was called in to check out a potential leak around a tub/shower, for my elderly mother. He replaced a valve in the tub/shower and repaired drywall in the master bath that he had to cut for access to the bathroom that he had previously worked on for us.(I would like to mention that this was a cut that had to be made and Peter found a way to access, what I would have thought impossible, without cutting into the tile work). I had initially opted to repair the wall myself, it turned out that I had not gotten it done, and we asked him to go ahead and fix it.

I contacted Peter for an estimate for plumbing troubles that my elderly mother was having, as I live out of state, it was very important to me to find someone that was reliable and trustworthy?. Due to the reviews on Angie?s List, I felt comfortable contacting him. My first contact with him was by phone while I was in town. Mr. Johnson came out to look at the issues my Mother was having after I had to leave. But I could not have been more satisfied with his timely response, accurate analysis of the issues and prompt estimate of repairs. He explained everything to us when he needed to call in a colleague for an area outside of his area of expertise and ensured that the service that we received from them was of the best quality and pricing. Peter constantly remained in touch with me through the whole process, as well as keeping my mother updated as work was done and what needed to be done. Over all I was incredibly satisfied with his work and the manner in which he conducted business. He was the utmost professional as well as incredibly personable and trustworthy. My Mother has since contacted Mr. Johnson again for another and separate issue and I will submit an additional review for that. Peter Johnson is the kind of plumber who has been at it for a long time and takes so much pride in his work. I will call on him for any plumbing issues in the future as well as recommending him to anyone who may need a plumber.
Description of Work: *Water pressure in the main shower/bath was incredibly low. Making a shower or bath virtually impossible. *Washing machine was draining into the floor upon spin cycle rather than draining appropriately. Peter disassembled the valve for the tub/shower, and found no visible issues, he installed a pressure gauge. He then had to cut apart the diverter which was plugged with sediment from the well. This was not an easy task because it had to be accessed through the wall of the master bathroom. He was able to do so by cutting a hole in the drywall, with absolutely no damage to the tiles. Resulting in the water pressure being restored better than ever. Peter called in a colleague, to check the drain pipes associated with the washing machine, they found no blockage in the drain, so Peter installed a branch drain to connect it to the main septic system. Again restoring service back to better than before.

This was a nightmare from start to finish. If it hadn't been for Peter's partner, Steve Heflin, we would have asked Peter to leave without finishing the job and would have sought an attorney. We were promised 3 things that did not happen: (1) that it would not be necessary to go through our retaining wall; (2) that we would never be without water; (3) that they would not drill a new hole in the house to connect to the house line. This was what we were told by Steve. Unfortunately, Peter came the next day to do the work. We arrived home to a broken retaining wall and a massive trench in our driveway and yard. (Steve later told us that they usually have a special crew dig the trench but that Peter decided to do it himself to save money. It was obvious from the mess in our yard and driveway that either Peter did not care about his work and that he had very little experience with the backhoe.) Later that night when we tried to turn on the water, we had none. (We had been turning the water on at the meter for brief periods of time to try to stem the flow from the leak until the line could be replaced.) Peter did not even have the courtesy to place a 1-minute call to let us know that we didn't have water. He had also gone into our shed, borrowed tools without permission and left them lying in the yard. We would have been happy to lend him tools, but would have appreciated being asked and would have expected them to be put away. Regarding an additional hole in the house, we did request that they try to avoid digging up a tree that we had planted but we also told them that we understood if it were necessary to move it. My husband confirmed specifically with them that we did not want another hole drilled in the house. When I arrived home on the last day, Peter proudly announced that he had "saved the tree". I did not realize the significance of this - that he had drilled another hole in the house - and so I thanked him. My husband was not home and so did not have an opportunity to confront him about this. Moreover, the line they installed at the new access point/hole they drilled is completely crooked. I would not even consider using them again. I would hire Steve Heflin again if he were working on his own but not as Peter's partner.
Description of Work: Dug a trench and installed a new water line from the meter to the house and connected it to the house copper line.

I would suggest that this report is both inaccurate and does not reflect the type of service I am committed to provide as many of the reports would suggest. If the Members could have been there, they might have understood why we did what we did. The job was inspected and passed with no problem. Digging up their beautiful bush where the existing line went into the house would have been quite involved, and the bush may not have survived. We drilled a hole through the foundation about ten feet away where there were only a few plants which were set aside carefully, etc. The hole through the foundation was completely sealed, and the piping from that point was installed plumb and level across the basement ceiling to the existing main water line, etc. The digging across the lawn involved first scrapping the sod with grass, setting it aside for replacement, etc. Their assessment of the backhoe work seems off the mark. I did the operating of the machine as the bucket, which is at the end of the arms, was within 2" of their storage shed during the digging. It never touched the shed. If it had, it would have been mentioned in the report, for sure. If someone else had been operating the backhoe, any damage would have been my fault. And, my goal was to "do no harm" as much as possible. Of course, the original water line was run when the house was in the excavation stage before the storage shed was built, before the garden and bushes, before any retaining walls, etc., at least 25 years ago. The new line had to come across their driveway, across the lawn, etc., as there was a patio behind the house, etc., with the terrain going uphill behoind, no easy way to trench, etc. Replacing water and sewer lines is often a nightmare for the occupants. It's a savage operation, just the way it is, and it often involves an interruption of service, which interruption happened here for a day for them. I take their comments seriously and will be considering what we could have done differently. We can please some of the people all the time and all the people some of the time and not all of the people all of the time. I feel that what we did for them was extraordinary and beyond their comprehension given the stress they had to endure not having water for as long as they did as the line was leaking for quite awhile, a considerable inconvenience for them. It feels like a variation of the "shoot the messenger" reaction. Sincerely, Peter Johnson

I reviewed Peter positively a few months ago but his recent service was so good I wanted to write again. A tenant reported a loose/wobbly toilet at our rental property. Since Peter had done work there about 8 months ago I called him and asked if he could check it out. He did so quickly, communicating with the tenant directly to find a time that worked well for both of them and keeping me updated via email and voicemail. It appeared that the toilet had become loose again because a) the floor is not level and b) the tenant is a large man who gives the toilet all it can handle:) Nevertheless, Peter fixed it for no charge because he is committed to good work and he guarantees his work for (his) life. He also took the time to notice that the other toilet was similarly loose and fixed that, too. He spent two hours at the house and took additional time to email me a detailed update that included recommendations for minimizing the chance of continued problems there in the future. Just outstanding service.
Description of Work: Repaired loose toilets.

Peter showed up on time and did quality work retrofitting an older home. I needed to have a lot of work done to get a certificate of occupancy on a 50 year old house. Lots of the plumbing had been done by the former owner who obviously fancied himself quite the handyman. Peter does beautiful work and his prices seemed reasonable. I will use his plumbing services in the future.

It was a long and expensive process but that was not Peter's fault. I am very satisfied with the final job.
Description of Work: Reinstalled kitchen sink after having new counter top installed. Fixed previous plumbing, had to order new sink clips which had been broken and/or thrown away when the countertop installers removed the sink. Had to return a second time to install the sink permanently with clips and calk. Also found that the hole for the sink had been cut too large leaving him only about 3/16" overlap. Due to weather and holidays he returned on Jan. 4 to do the permanent installation.

He spilled some plumbing materials onto the washer, a blue stuff. We had covered the washer and dryer up, and somehow they came uncovered. He had installed a dishwasher hook up for us under the sink in the kitchen. It started to leak, so we called him to come out and address it. He refused.

Thank you for taking the time to submit this report. This report is way outside what my customers have entered. My goal is to deliver good service to and to communicate with my customers. Please refer to the other reports. If there is ever a problem with my work, I return to make sure the job is done to their satisfaction. I would never REFUSE to come back and correct any problems. In this situation they were having a dishwasher installed in a few days by the supplier who would deal with this minor leak in the process of the dishwasher install. If there were an issue with anything I did, they would have called me, and I would have made the trip to correct it. They did not call me; so my assumption would be that this minor leak was corrected easily when the dishwasher was installed.

Bottom line to all this is we feel secure and safe from future water problems, especially now that cold weather is approaching. It was a pleasure doing business and experiencing their expertise and concern for a job well done. Having had contractors due shoddy work in the past, it was refreshing to deal with competence. Can't go wrong using their services.
Description of Work: We contacted Peter Johnson for needed replacement of broken water pipes. He also uses Steve Heflin, another contractor to help out when he is exceptionally busy. They work together for when one is busy the other fills in. Steve Heflin did our repairs and dug up the old piping and replaced our main water pipe. Because our home had no in-house shut off valves Steve put them in. Replaced an outdoor water pipe. Put an expansion tank on our hot water heater. Pressure relief valve installed. on water heater. Installed pressure reducing valve on inside water line. Replaced out-door water spicket valve.

If you want something done well I recommend Peter wholeheartedly. His prices are quite reasonable-- I would guess you might find someone cheaper but I'd be surprised if the quality of their work is as good. And he guarantees it for (his) lifetime. The changes he made went above and beyond what we'd normally expect (e.g., when he replaced lines in our crawlspace he thought ahead about whether it would be helpful to have an additional shutoff valve, and if so, where would be the easiest place to reach it). We absolutely plan to use him again in the future. I only had two problems-- one of which was mostly my fault. Peter came and gave an estimate for the project I needed done (slow drains and leaky faucet in House 1 above), did the work quickly and charged very reasonably (around $200, if I recall). While he was there he showed me that the drains would continue to be a problem because of the wacky way they had been routed (most likely a do-it-yourselfer had installed them initially), and that the toilet was going to be a problem, too. I am confident that his observations were accurate, too, and not just a ploy to get more work-- I think he is someone who just really likes to see things done right. Anyway, my mistake was that I just said to go ahead and make those fixes without asking for another estimate. His cost was so reasonable on the first project and what he was proposing didn't look that time-consuming. Well, it took longer than I thought so I had some sticker shock when he was done. Something similar happened on House 2, where he came in to install the dehumidifier drain, found a crazy mess in our crawlspace and took a few extra hours to organize it (with my okay-- again I should have asked for a quote). While this contributed a little to the sticker shock, I can't tell you how nice it is to open the crawlspace door and find a number of well-marked shut-off valves within easy reach and a clear space to crawl without worrying about busting a water line. The second problem was minor, and I would guess was not typical of Peter. He was doing all this work for us right before he was leaving town for a few weeks, so he didn't have time to do an invoice with the detailed breakdown before he left. When he returned weeks later and added up his parts costs it turned out that we stilled owed him more money, but by then he needed our help to remember what we had paid him and how much of a discount he had given us for getting him through Angie's List. Fortunately, we had saved the short invoices he had given us and we resolved it quite easily. In fact, I might not have mentioned it at all if it hadn't come right on the heels of the sticker shock (you mean we owe more money?). So that's why I gave a B for professionalism. And even then I hesitated to do so, because on the flip side, it was nice to have someone working in the house who was sweet toward our children and who takes the time to add kind and thoughtful words for our family whenever he sends invoices/emails.
Description of Work: House 1: fixed slow-draining drains in tub and sink (lines were built incorrectly so he rerouted them to ensure easy flow), fixed water leak in tub faucet (behind the wall/in the crawlspace), fixed toilet drainpipe and secured wobbly toilet, replaced faulty shutoff valve for dishwasher and helped complete installation of replacement dishwasher House 2: installed drainline for dehumidifier, reorganized haphazard water lines

Peter is very professional and soft spoken. He is a thorough worker and gets the job done, even if it means staying until 7 or 8 in the evening to finish. We've had him help us three times already and wouldn't hesitate to call him in the future.
Description of Work: Peter has helped us a few times with a recurring plumbing problem in an old house. We were having water leaks which we thought were due to a faulty water heater and we would have replaced the water heater but Peter asked if he could try some different and less expensive ways to fix the problem first. Eventually his trouble shooting led us to discover that the problem wasn't even in the water heater but in a pressure valve, which he was able to fix. While he was here, he made vast improvements to how the shut off valve was set up (it used to stick out through a rough hole in the wall and now is relocated in the space where the heater is) and he even helped us with some other minor plumbing issues including properly fixing a pipe that had frozen last winter.

We had had leaking onto the bedroom carpet which is adjacent to the utility room. Peter arrived at about 10:30 AM on Dec. 11.He checked the place where the leaking was evident, went under the house to assess the situation there, determined that the problem was in the utility room behind a wall panel behind the washing machine. He opened the panel, then went to purchase the materials necessary to make the repair. He asked me if I wanted to replace the studor vent. He said that the one installed was the wrong size, but that I would have to replace it eventually. I elected to replace it now. He completed the work. I was impressed with his professionalism. He was not in any hurry to get to his next job and was very thorough in the work he did.

The work went great and his charge was very reasonable. He had a slight problem when his bucket overflowed and spilled out onto the floor. We had to scramble for another bucket and some towels but it was quickly cleaned up. He is a nice guy, very communicative and easy to work with.
Description of Work: The water heater kept leaking in a house where we are only there one weekend a month. We were worried about leaving the house with a faulty water heater and thought we would have to replace it altogether but Peter suggested installing an expansion tank first to see if that corrected the problem before investing in a new water heater. The problem appears to be fixed and Peter saved us a ton of money. He was very flexible about arriving right when we did as our visits to the house are limited.

The projects went very well. Peter is great to work with. Plumbing with an artist s touch! He seems to focus on ways to make the installation better and more user friendly, even while keeping up a good pace. When you step back and look at the piping, you have the feel that everything is just where it needs to be. He also came up with several ideas that greatly improved the system, such as fast hot water in a far bathroom without even requiring a pump or additional devices. I enjoy not having to look over his shoulder or worry about the outcome because I am confident in the final product.
Description of Work: Peter Johnson re-plumbed a large 1860's home in a restoration and change of use project including reconfiguring the layout for design and practicality. He completed three projects at my own home, including plumbing a new apartment, installing new water and sewer lines to the street, and installing new water and sewer lines for the whole house. I have also recommended him to several of my own customers and friends.

Peter is a very down to earth gentleman and a pleasure to work with. His typical rate is $78 per hour. He charged me for 2.5 hours plus $68 for parts.
Description of Work: Peter inspected the gas line going to my clothes dryer in which I suspected a leak. He placed a 90 degree elbow on the gas fitting of the dryer and that took care of the leak. He also fixed our toilet flange and fabricated the proper holes and attached the toilet properly. It had been loose for several years. He also inspected the plumbing below the house. We met him as part of a bathroom remodeling team that he subcontracted for (to retrofit our clawfoot tub as a shower before we remodeled another bath), it became apparent that he was much more experienced and knowledgeable than the rest of the crew, and we hired him to perform extensive work on our entire plumbing and hot water heating system.
Description of Work: Peter came to our house as part of a crew that was to remodel our bathroom, but ended up doing a great deal more. We live in an old, historic home, and the plumbing system for the entire house was faulty. He displayed the utmost professionalism as a subcontractor, even helping the remodeling crew figure out framing and other carpentry problems. We hired him to fix the rest of our home's problems based on this. He reworked not only our water supply system for the entire house and two bathrooms, but he re-plumbed our hot water heating system in the most exquisite and intricate way to increase its efficiency and capacity, while fixing a horrific overpressure problem with our city water supply. He was on the phone with both the city and the manufacturer of pressure reducing valves many times. He also spoke to the manufacturers of other equipment to ensure that our heating system worked as we wanted when he was done. In short, he re plumbed our hot water heating system, two bathrooms, added an exterior faucet, and balanced our entire house's water supply (no more scalding or freezing in the shower!). All the while he did what he said he would do, was courteous, prompt, and delightful to work with. He is a true gentleman and craftsman. I recommend him highly, both as a plumber and as a person of integrity.

I was in a bind due to a previous plumbers personal problems. Peter came in and picked up right where he left off. He surveyed the situation and began work almost immediately. He used all the parts I had on hand and let me purchase my own parts to save on cost.
