DRAIN CLEARING OUTSIDE THE BUILDING.
Serious drain cleaning I would refer to Rooter King, a local family operation, 828-252-2041.
Prompt and professional work at an extremely good price. I have nothing but good things to say about their service and would highly recommend them to anyone. I am going to hire them again for another project in the near future for which he gave me some great advice.
Description of Work: They replaced a leaky outdoor faucet with a much higher quality frost free one. He had to go into my crawl space too which I don't wish on anyone.

Last fall, I set out to replace an aging oil fired boiler with a modern gas fired unit. I bought the boiler itself and laid out and fitted most of the plumbing, but I still needed help with the gas piping and the final reconnection of the new and old systems. Peter Johnson was the perfect fit for my project. He came over to my house, looked at what I had done, offered suggestions on some changes -- for example, to move the make-up water valve closer to the boiler -- and came back to work when I could be there as well. It took us less than a day to finish the job and get the heat back on. He also helped me with getting the proper permits from the City and in dealing with the inspector. Peter used to work in New England where boilers rather than forced hot air furnaces are the norm so he was very familiar with my heating system. He even loaned me some of his tools -- very large pipe wrenches and an invaluable pipe vise -- that are needed to deal with large black iron pipe, and taught me the best ways to assemble sections of black iron. On the job, Peter is easy to work with and even listens to WCQS. If you're the sort of homeowner who likes to do some of your own work, Peter Johnson can consult with you to maximize the chance of success and minimize the cost of your project. Highly recommended.

There is no story. He said he couldn't come to my house until after XMAS. That was far too long for me to wait. He let me know this within 24 hours of me initiating the service request. I DO NOT like paying for service up front and then having to wait for a refund when the transaction doesn't occur. There should be a way for a potential customer to know that the wait is over 16 days. Paying up front and then finding that the delay is 16 days is WRONG.

[member name removed] comments are correct and poignant. The AngiesList deals such as he purchased would work well for a licensed plumber with a few employees and wanting to keep everyone busy. I am independent with competent people to help me if necessary. There are no employees. Customers and I go over the situation, and usually only one qualified person is necessary. I usually work alone. Many jobs involve carpentry from finish to rough framing which skill set and tools are in the truck when I get to the job. I have been doing carpentry over 50 years. I have had a Plumbing License almost 30 years. I do not do these "Deals" anymore. I am sorry for any inconvenience. Sincerely, Peter Johnson

After I met with(removed member name), her name went onto the list of people to contact when there would be time to deal with the leaky faucets she has, not an urgent issue. There has been a note on the exit door here to call her since the visit in Nov. She works during the day, and the repairs have to happen after 4 PM, an inconvenience as the water had to be turned off, and 4 PM can be a difficult time to find parts for an old faucet, etc. Her kitchen faucet may be over 50 years old. There have been a string of time-crucial out-of-town jobs that have prevented my returning to Asheville before 6 or 7, a workable time frame for me as all the children are adults on their own now living too far away. (removed member name). She does not need a licensed plumber to fix a leaky faucet. I am sorry it did not work out for Ms. (removed member name). Scheduling will always be a challenge in a service like plumbing. Ms. (removed member name) could have called me to ask about when I could deal with her situation. I encourage customers to be in touch. I work independently without an office staff or employees. The office has all necessary equipment, and the Smart Phone is always on my person.

He called it. After resetting the thermal doohickey and confirming the disposal was sounding like it was jammed, I unjammed the unit and managed to pull out a little piece of plastic that had fallen in. Unit fired right up like nothing had happened. His free advice over the phone saved me a $100 visit for 5 minutes of work.
Description of Work: Had a garbage disposal that was completely dead. After asking for and receiving some pictures of the dead unit, Mr. Johnson suggested over the phone to use an Allen wrench to turn the disposal grinders manual in case something was stuck and the jammed machinery had caused the thermal override sensor thingie to trip, cutting power to the whole unit. If that didn't clear it up, Mr. Johnson asked that I let him know and he would be out within a day or two to take a look himself.

Just purchased a new house. Supply valves for washing machine were leaking. Called Peter, he asked me to take a picture of the valve and text it to him. He called me right back and explained how I could do it myself and save a bit of $$. The valves were so old, I was not able to get them removed. Called him back and he came the next morning. Replaced the valves and also fixed a simply problem with a toilet. He gave me some ideas for adding a utility sink and took the time to explain the plumbing in our new house and some issues to look out for in the future. I liked the fact that he offered alternatives to a service call and only recommended work that actually needed to be done.

[removed member name] called me on 12/18 about a leak in a shower drain which was accessible in the crawl space. I happened to be close by and went right over to check on the situation. The drain is an adapted arrangement with some type of putty, etc. that has been OK for awhile and is now leaking. The crawl space is about 14" between the floor joists and the floor of the crawl space; so the repair would be somewhat time consuming. I told him I was quite busy and would try to get to it after Christmas and suggested we be in touch at that time. His phone number was not in the log book, my mistake, and I sent him a letter he would have received on or about 1/3 asking for the correct number for him so the repair could be scheduled. He has not been in touch with me at this time. He said the repair was not urgent as there is another shower, etc. I am sorry he did not get in touch with me. At any given time, there are several issues before me, and I am sorry I did not get in touch with him sooner. Christmas and New Year family events and jobs needing completion for occupancy at the end of Dec made for a busy couple weeks.

[Member name removed] did not mention that the pressure water in the drain dislodged a plastic toy eyeball 1 1/4" in diameter, just big enough to get in the tub drain which had no strainer. This "eye" was looking at us from the tub drain. When we, [member name removed] and I, removed it, the tub drain was fine. The pressured water had pushed it back to the drain hole in the tub.

Water pressure had suddenly increased dramatically, taking out a water filter in the process. Peter Johnson plumbing came the same day I called, diagnosed the problem (failed pressure valve) and repaired in tin about 90 minutes. It would have been quicker, but they had to buy the correct valve, they didn't have the right one on their truck.
Description of Work: I used the opportunity of a Groupon Coupon to have the mechanisms in my toilets changed. The labor was covered by the coupon, and I paid for parts. The service was timely and professional. I will use these plumbers again the next time I need a plumber.

I interviewed several plumbers before choosing Peter. They all had good Angie's List reviews but Peter's philosophy was the most conservative. My home inspector had said the plumbing in the house I purchased was shoddy and would require a complete overhaul. Peter agreed that it wasn'texactly professionally done, but there were no leaks so no need to change the whole system right away. Instead of spending $4000 on replacing everything I spent $230 to change the pressure regulator. A great plumber and a great person! Highly recommended.

Response from PETER JOHNSON PLUMBING
This customer and her husband just purchased this one-floor house and wanted to do whatever was necessary to move in. She wanted an estimate on what was needed for the plumbing system at this point. After determining that the water line from the street to the full basement was not leaking, the only outstanding issue was the leaking relief valve on the water heater. A "Lazy-needle" pressure gauge was put on the water heater to determine the highest water pressure in the house during the night when the street pressure can get to 200 psi due to low consumption in the neighborhood. The pressure reached about 125 psi which pressure would open the relief valve on the water heater. The Pressure Reducing Valve would not adjust the pressure below about 100 psi. PRV valves are mechanical devices that wear out over time, and the existing valve was perhaps 10 years old at least. The PRV was replaced, and set to reduce the incoming street pressure to about 60 psi, and the lazy-needle gauge showed a high pressure overnight of about 95 psi, and the water relief valve was not leaking; so the primary issue was resolved. Both the husband and wife are working, and the house is unoccupied during the day. At this point, they have no children and the house can be shut down during the day with no inconvenience to them. It seemed that a good course of action would be to move in and live with the existing system to determine if the existing system was adequate. If there were problems, they could be addressed during the day in the future with no inconvenience. The existing plumbing will need to be replaced, and this change may not be necessary for several years at which point they would have recovered from the expenses of a new home purchase and have time to prepare for revisions of their somewhat old system. As I have not heard from them, it would seem that the existing system is workable. The basic approach involves doing only what is necessary even if the customer is considering extensive updating. My approach is to do only the necessary with consideration of the entire situation. In this case, any repairs or replacements can happen easily as all the plumbing is easily accessible in the full basement (some crawl space) in this one-floor 1 1/2 bathroom house.

There was no electrical feed wire to the sink cabinet for the disposal. If there is an active circuit and wire for the disposal, we make the final connection when we install the disposal. Without power, the unit cannot be tested under working conditions. We would have come back to test the unit, and he did not call us after it was connected to power. I tell customers to check any installation for a few days as leaks can appear at any time even though the install is not leaking when when checked before leaving. I called this member and offered him the Coupon again at no additional charge, and he said he would call me in the future when a plumbing issue arises.

Can't say enough good things about Peter's quircky personality - my wife and I both felt very comfortable with him. He came for an evening to look at the tub, spent a few hours and realized it was a much bigger job than expected. He only charged $90 for the first couple hours. We were doing renovations a floor below, so he waited till the tub drain was further exposed which I felt reasonable. Luckily he was on hand when a steam pipe was uncovered in a wall we were taking out - and as he has a ton of experience he was definitely up to the task of rearranging this and pretty much saved the day. The only downside was the price - I'm not familiar with how much plumber's usually cost, so kept asking estimates. His overall general estimate was less than 50% of what it ended up being. It's not the cost that bothered us as much as the low estimate so that when it came time to pay we were shocked and unprepared. He'd itemized and calculated correctly, however, for $75/hr plumber's fee, which I guess is reasonable.

[member name removed] and his wife were leaving town and the tub was not draining. I stopped by on the way home and determined that the original "lead bend" trap and drain and trap finally plugged up and was leaking. The carpenters were planning to remove the wall between the kitchen and the dining room while they were gone. The timing was perfect here as the tub is above the wall to be removed and the drain had to be reinstalled down to the crawl space where it could be connected to the 4" building drain (before they returned). After they had left, the wall was removed to find a steam pipe that had to be re-routed. If [member name removed]had been home, they would have seen how much time it takes to cut and thread and install the replacement steel pipe even with the power threader. And, we did contact them when we discovered it, and it had to be re-routed. The whole plumbing process was done in time for the carpenters to close-in their work before [member name removed] returned so they would have the kitchen and upstairs tub after their long weekend away. Sometimes projects move along as we hope. I am sorry for the inconvenience, and it could have been more intense if the plumber had to be retained on Thurs for a rush job. And, of course, it would have been really inconvenient if the tub drain quit a couple weeks after the carpenters were done as both the ceiling and wall would have to be re-opened to repair the tub drain and then replaced and painted, etc, above the kitchen sink. We always try to accommodate our efforts with consideration for all those involved.

As described in detail above, I was very pleased with the work that Peter performed. It was necessary for him to make 3-4 visits to our home to make the necessary repairs since the work that was needed was pretty extensive.
Description of Work: Since I had used Peter a couple of years ago, I was very comfortable in hiring him again to perform several plumbing tasks which included installing a new kitchen sink faucet; repairing a broken pipe/outside water faucet; and repairing a tub which no longer had any hot water. After evaluating a weak water flow coming from the kitchen faucet, we also identified the need to replace the water pressure gauge that connected the well to our household water supply in the maintenance room. At my request, he also installed pvc pipe that would drain any excess water from the well tank into the septic tank drain if a problem should occur in the future. Peter is an excellent plumber who uses high quality plumbing supplies, does exceptional professional work, answered all my questions re: how each specific job would be performed, and kept me informed regarding job progress/challenges. I noticed that in this job as well as the work that was done two years ago, that he performs all necessary drywall repair when he must remove drywall to make a plumbing repair. This saves the time and expense needed to hire a drywall contractor. He is always very thorough and does a great job no matter but plumbing objective must be accomplished. I consider his hourly rate and the total fee to be very reasonable when the extent of the work done is taken into account. Although the scope of the job first included three jobs, we both agreed that actually the overall project evolved into 5-6 specific jobs that really needed to be done. I highly recommend Peter for any plumbing job that needs to be done and I will definitely hire him for all my future plumbing needs.
