Don, the electrician who came, was prompt and courteous. However, he quoted us $850 to run a line to power the fan to the center of our living room and another $350 to actually put the fan in. This is a townhouse living room - eight foot ceiling, twelve foot by sixteen foot room - so its not a huge distance. We were told that if we had an unfinished basement it would make it a lot easier. So I showed him the basement, which is partially unfinished, ie, plenty of ways to scoot an electric line around, but then he said that didn't make any difference, it would still cost the same. My impression was that this guy didn't want to do the work so he gave us an outrageous estimate to get out of the job. I was extremely annoyed since I took a day off work to be home to get this job done.
Description of Work: Estimate cost of ceiling fan installation. Estimate cost of adding a new wall switch on an adjacent floor (unrelated to the ceiling fan).

Technician was very prompt, friendly and eager to start the work. He did not however, quote any possible charges when he arrived, did not quote any charge after he diagnosed the problem and began to rectify it and was finished in 2.5 hours. I was a bit surprised at the final charge and that it worked out to be an even $500. Although he was very good at his job, I feel the charge was too much for 2.5 hours, including a short trip to a hardware store for a new sensor and considering that we supplied the new pole light.
Description of Work: Technician diagnosed electrical shortage for circuit inside the home, installed new GFI in basement, switched out two faulty GFI's for regular outlets, installed new light (supplied by homeowner) on front yard pole, replaced faulty sensor on the pole and installed light switch in garage to control power to the pole light.

Called Jim's at 8:30am. The service technician, Donald, was here at 10:05am (same day). He diagnosed the leak in the back yard hose bibb and replaced the washer. Problem fixed. While here, Donald gave us an estimate on installing a pedestal sink or a vanity in the half-bath, and an estimate on replacing the kitchen sink faucet.

Mix up over date of reservation, mix up as likely to be my fault as theirs. They corrected it by getting someone there that afternoon. Tech arrived on time. was thorough, clean and organized. Explained work being done as he went, made constructive suggestions. Work done before he left even tho he needed to run out and grab one part.

The Electrician suggested I call the office to reschedule. My reaction to that comment is: You canceled, you have the office call me to show you want me as a customer. It's been several weeks, I have not received a call to apologize for the inconvenience or to try to get me to reschedule. I chose Jim's Inc. because they are located close to my home and received great reviews on Angie's List. Although the hours the were willing to come to my house were inconvenient, I made the appointment in the hopes that I'd be as pleased as dozens of others were. This lack of basic Customer Service has lost them a customer. In addition to the minor work I needed, I had asked for estimates on two larger projects. Not getting these estimates has actually lost them three jobs.
Description of Work: No services were performed. The electrician called an hour prior to the appointment and canceled. No reason given. My guess was that it was related to the weather since it happened on that Friday in February when we got a little snow and ice. Since the fireplace/ chimney repairman arrived on-time and used his ladder out in the backyard, this cancellation seemed unnecessary since the work was minor and in the basement - not indoors.

Called Jim's to report two leaks. One under bathroom sink and other under kitchen sink. Called on a Sunday and they have an answering service who asked if it was an emergency. I indicated it was not and she said I would receive a call the next day. I received a call at 8:00 a.m. and explained my problem. They set an appointment for 10:00 the same day and arrived on time. Diagnosed the bathroom leak as a loose nut and did a quick tightening. Diagnosed the kitchen leak as a bad disposal.He made some suggestion for replacements. I opted to take what he had on the truck. He installed it in less than an hour. I also was offered and accepted a service agreement.
Description of Work: Provided and installed new garbage disposal.

They were on time, they scheduled me in during a busy time. They were well qualified. He tried to take the igniter out, it seemed like he was having a bit of trouble. When he put in the new igniter he initially broke it. Luckily he brought a second one that day and installed it properly. Everything works fine now.

On Thursday night at 9 p.m. we noticed that water was dripping into the basement laundry room through the light fixture. It had to be coming from the kitchen above, but we could not find a leak. Jim's had a 24-hour emergency number and we got a call back in about 15 minutes. HP told us it would cost $200 extra for him to come right then, or if we wanted he would come the next morning at 8 a.m. In the meantime he gave us directions about what to do to limit damage. HP showed up right on time. The leak turned out to be in a really awkward place (naturally) behind the cabinets. To get to it directly would have required cutting through the cabinets and counter top. HP removed the dishwasher and figured out a way to get to the leak from the side. He was very skilled. In the end the leak was fixed and the kitchen looked exactly the same as before. We felt like we saved a bundle on what could have been a VERY expensive repair. HP and Jim's were awesome for us!

OK, not great. Technician did fix the leak, but I was under the impression he would also be able to fix the ceiling, the company advertises itself as full-service, including carpentry, sheetrock, and other services. This technician, though, just did plumbing, and said the company didn't have anyone who could handle the rest of the job. Also, the technician said they price based on the job, not the time required. This job didn't require much time, but was priced as if it were a complicated job. Technician did explain what he was doing, but he had a rough manner, not entirely reassuring.
Description of Work: Diagnosed the reason for damage to sheetrock ceiling in kitchen: leak from upstairs bathroom. Fixed leak.

I was very happy with this overall experience. It was so easy to get a hold of Jim, and he definitely didn't over charge me. In fact, when he first arrived, I was only aware of the problem with the toilet. It was his good observation that found the problem with the tub.
Description of Work: He fixed a water leak in my toilet that was leaking into the garage wall and also fixed a leak in the tub the was seeping into the crawl space above the family room. He had to repair a little drywall and replace some pipes.

Going with them was a lot cheaper than most of the other companies I called in my area. The guy who installed my water heater did a good job but there were a couple of things I did not like about him. He signed me up for a lifetime contract without my permission and I did not like that one bit! I can't say it was the company that I didn't like but mostly it was the guy who did the work. The only reason why I would use them again is because of the contract, after that I will try someone else.

Don and Matt (subcontractors to Jim's in Montgomery County they explained) arrived a few minutes early. They were OK with our dog being around. They donned booties over their work shoes to prevent tracking dirt into the house. After inspecting and diagnosing the problem and discussing it with me, they had to go out to buy a replacement well switch. They were done in a couple of hours total - less time than had been scheduled. The job site was left clean and dry. They seemed knowledgeable and were willing to answer any question I posed, so I felt like I learned something new about pressure tanks and plumbing that might come in handy in the future. My impression is that these guys like to do quality work that will last for a long time - not just a quick fix. They were professional, clean, friendly and nonsmokers (important to my wife) as far as I could tell.
Description of Work: Inspect pressure tank and replace well switch, drain valve, pressure gage and relief valve. We have our own well and had been experiencing drops in water pressure. Notes: I forgot to use my first time Angie's List discount coupon when the plumbers were present, but Mimi offered to credit my account when I called Jim's the next day. Nice. I bought the optional lifetime plumbing safety inspection agreement ($199) because it saved me over $50 on this job and we anticipate needing a plumber a couple times each year - so it should pay for itself.

The work itself went very smoothly. But given that the job only took an hour, I felt the initial estimate of $300 from the technician was very high and then successfully negotiated a reduced price for the work. Unlike many companies which charge by the hour, Jim's charges by the job and there was no reduced savings by combining the three jobs even though they did not involve repeated trips to my home. In the end, they agreed to knock off $75 to keep me satisfied - no doubt because I was well armed with Angie's List! In his defense, the technician explained that this job went much faster than many others involving the same type of work.
Description of Work: Replaced flush valve for two toilets and replaced all of the interior mechanism and handle for a third toilet that is 17 years old. I obtained all necessary replacement parts myself. So the job involved only labor costs and required about an hour to complete. The fee for replacing flush valves is $75 and the other was $150.

I called on 7/16 for a plumber to check out a leak discovered over the weekend. They had someone out the next day. Original appointment was for 1 p.m but I was called by the plumber on 7/17 and asked if I was available earlier. He came by and check out the toilet. He asked a couple questions of me trying to determine if something happened recently that would have caused a leak. He couldn't find any cracks I was told and so the seals would be the issue. He resealed the tank to the bowl and showed me a couple washer looking objects that he replaced. I use the toilet bowl cleaners that are put in the tank and turn the water blue. He suggested I not do that because the chemical eats at the seals. He suggested I get an apparatus from the hardware store that re-routes the chemical and hangs off the tank. So far I don't see any further leaking. He went the extra mile and also tightened toilet seat also.
Description of Work: Provided estimate on fixing leak under tank of the toilet. They bill by job not hourly rate. When I asked about Angie's List discount he called to find out what that would be but couldn't get anyone so he gave me about 10% off original cost of $245. I accepted the quote and he resealed the tank to the bowl. I wasn't aware that JIM's subcontracts but according to the plumber he does. I'm not sure if it was the best price I could have gotten but unless I find out otherwise I expect anyone representing JIM's would deal honestly with the client which is worth something. From the reports I've read on Angie's List I had expected a lower price for what was diagnosed.

My call was answered by a polite individual who appreciated our situation so she scheduled us as soon as possible. The repairman was punctual and polite. He evaluated the problem and set out to obtain the necessary piece. Although it took a couple days to get the part, the repairman went the extra mile to keep me informed as to the status. Some things are not within the repairman's control. I definitely will use them again.
Description of Work: It was in February 2007 during the coldest days in decades the news said and we lost heat. They had someone out right away to evaluate the problem. Instead of replacing the entire unit the repairman isolated the part that needed replacing and fix it which was more within my immediate budget. Due to the age of my furnace the part was hard to find.

After the work was completed I made a call to the Jim's Inc. office to speak to a manager and was told that Jim only came in on Monday's to sign checks and that he would return my call then. A week passed with no call so I called back and was told that because of the holiday Jim didn't get the message but that he would call me back the following Monday when he was in to sign checks. The following Monday found me with still no returned call. This time when I called I was told by the office worker (Mimi?) that if I had called while the workman was at my home there may have been some recourse but now it was too late. She went on to say that while they weren't the cheapest, the weren't the most expensive and that this rate was fair. I don't mind paying for first class high quality service but this was certainly not that. I feel cheated and thoroughly ripped off. I advise anyone considering hiring this firm to think twice.
Description of Work: The shower and sink in our master bath were both draining slowly. The subcontractor Gustavo, estimated that both would be cleared by snaking one drain for approximately $300. He needed to snake both drains individually and doubled the charges. There were dozens of grease splotches on my white walls and tile and a bucket full of filth was left for me to dispose. $560 for forty minutes work that was just adequate is outrageous.
