"On September 17, 2024, I hired Dustin Skinner to trench a hole and install an inground trampoline. This trampoline is a custom order from Beast Inc., a high-end manufacturer known for their top-of-the-line products. My primary motivation for this installation was the safety of my children. I took on the responsibility for the rental equipment, which included an excavator from Black Canyon Rentals, and assumed all liability associated with it. Unfortunately, it became clear that Dustin either lacked the necessary knowledge or patience to complete this job effectively. The retaining wall he constructed crumbled under the weight of the trampoline, damaging and bending its legs and misaligning the frame. When I approached him politely to discuss the damages, he responded with a verbal attack, using profanity and threatening to abandon the project. He adamantly refused to take responsibility for the damage he caused, as well as the significant mess he created while digging the hole and the debris he left from his other projects. His use of profanity was particularly troubling, as it occurred in front of my child and a friend who had come to assist with damage control. My trampoline, which cost $1,998, is now completely destroyed. While it can still be jumped on, its structural integrity is gone. Dustin used corrugated steel to wrap around the trampoline, but he installed it with the jagged edges facing up against the side rails. He then placed a black tarp material over these dangerous edges and buried it into the ground. The trampoline is now uneven and crooked, with dirt piled excessively inside, and the jumping surface is loose beyond repair. The damage extends beyond the trampoline itself; the area where he dug the hole is also affected. He threatened not to return the equipment on time, effectively holding it hostage due to my well-articulated message expressing my discontent with his verbal abuse regarding the damage to my property. Despite being late, he eventually returned the mini excavator to Black Canyon Rentals. I am now in the process of retaining an attorney to address his business practices, and I have reached out to the Montrose Sheriff's Department to request a no-trespass order against him. I genuinely fear for my safety and that of my children, as I believe he is capable of causing harm. I initially hired Dustin because we know each other from church. Although we are not close friends, we are friendly acquaintances. I never intended to escalate this situation, but his decision to use $50,000 worth of equipment as leverage in response to my setting boundaries was unacceptable. During our confrontation, he used several curse words, including calling me the "B" word, and insisted he would not pay for the damages. I cannot recommend this contractor if you value your equipment and personal belongings. He exhibits anger issues and appears to be mentally unstable. He admitted to being drunk the night before working for me, which likely contributed to his careless and sloppy work. I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) this morning as well. I am willing to withdraw my complaints and reviews if the business owner refunds the cost of the trampoline, the day's work, and the rental fee. As I mentioned, I had intended to let this situation go until he chose to hold the rental equipment in my name as a hostage the following day. This entire situation has resulted in significant emotional and mental distress for me."

I created Amalgam Construction two years ago to be able to work for myself. With five years of framing and remodel experience including but not limited to, concrete foundations, framing, insulation, drywall, window and door installation, tile, finish carpentry, siding, and roofing. I also have several years of land surveying history. My current interest is in decks, fences, small home improvement projects, small outbuildings, window and door replacement, and annual home maintenance. I have a flexible schedule, can work weekdays, weekends, and/or evenings. I arrive at a job site with all the tools needed, a positive attitude, and a willingness to work with the client to achieve a finished product both parties will be proud of. COVID 19 update: I am aware of the situation we are all in. Personal protective equipment (PPE) can be used per request and be disposed of properly. I am currently not engaging in large social events in order to stay healthy and do my part to help bring the human race back to a healthy, active, lifestyle.

While the terms deck and porch are often used interchangeably, they are two distinct home features. Porches offer a roof that protects from the elements when coming and going from the house. Generally, porches are on the front of your home. On the other hand, decks are generally built in the backyard of a home and offer no roof or protection from the elements, like rain or snow. Porches typically require less maintenance and upkeep thanks to the roof, but both features require regular cleaning and repairs to maintain good condition.
The cost to build a deck is $8,025 on average. However, this cost can range anywhere from $1,500 to $22,000, depending on multiple factors, such as size, materials, and deck type. You can expect to pay $30 to $60 per square foot when building a new deck.
Cedar decks are often the most cost-effective option, ranging from $4 to $9 per square foot for materials. However, pressure-treated decking, which is resistant to rot, is more expensive, ranging from $15 to $25 per square foot for materials.
Yes, adding either a porch or deck (or both!) to your home can add value. Both of these features add character and curb appeal to your home, but even more importantly, they add an element of convenience. Plus, these home features create additional square footage of living space to your home. Adding a porch onto your home can give you a return on investment (ROI) of up to 84%, while adding a deck can provide an ROI of up to 80%.
Several types of porches are available to meet your needs and style preferences. Some common porch types include:
Porticos are essentially a roof over a walkway leading to the home's front entrance.
Sunrooms are closed-in porches that are an extension of the house with glass or plastic panels that allow optimal sunlight.
Wraparound porches extend around the entire home, or at least the front and one side, and offer multiple entrances to the house.
Back porches are an extension of the home’s floor into the outdoors. These offer more protection and privacy than a deck.
As with patios, there are many types of deck choices to choose from to add personalization to your home. Some common deck options include:
Attached decks are anchored to the home and include simple ground-level options or multi-level structures with stairways and separate landings.
Detached island decks are not attached to the home; they’re a freestanding structure in the yard.
Wraparound decks connect the back of the house with at least one other side and often are built with railings for safety.
Multi-level decks connect your deck through varying levels of elevation, featuring landings that are attached to stairs.
