JC Smith, LLC is without a doubt THE BEST contractor that I've ever hired. From the initial communication to the end of the project, our experience was overwhelmingly positive. Here are some of my thoughts: 1. Communication is critical to the success of any project. John and his employees always let me know the schedule and plan for the week. JR, the lead on our project, texted me immediately regarding any questions or changes to the plan. This was the first time that I had worked with a contractor with superior communication skills. My wife and I really appreciated this during the 2 months that the guys were working on our house. 2. The quote for the work on our porch and floors was very detailed. We were impressed with the plans that John presented to us and the detailed costs for everything involved. It was very easy to make changes and additions as the project went along. 3. The workmanship was second to none! The guys John has working for him are experts at what they do. They are also first rate people who are trustworthy. That's really important when you have folks working in your house. Overall, I will be hiring JC Smith, LLC for all of my construction and renovation projects in the future. They are the best!

First impressions were good. John showed up at the house when he said he would. We discussed what my wife and I were interested in doing. Not knowing what to expect pricewise we had two ideas and depending on the price would help us decide what we were going to do. John said he would come back that Friday with his "estimator" to get measurements so they could put together some proposals for us. He was very professional and seemed sincere, hence the "C" rating for professionalism. It would have been an "A" if everything else associated with being professional was followed. I called him on his mobile and the office about mid week asking if he could come sooner as I uncovered some more immediate work needed. I thought that this would be perfect from a homeowners perspective to assess their work on something simple like reframing and replacing a window in our living room. We never got a call back nor did anyone show up. There was at least two additional phone calls placed in which I was told he would get the message and follow up with me. Nothing. Of late it seems more and more difficult to get general contractors in this area to commit to what they promise or at least call you back or follow up. Short of John himself with his estimator showing up at our door with a sincere apology for the total lack of respect for us, the customer, I will never use or recommend them. Update-- apparently John's company pays close attention to the responses on Angie's List and responds accordingly to correct any issues. He and one of his manager showed up with some gift mugs and an apology for not responding to my calls. He said right after getting this review they pulled their phone logs and found out the message was received and directed to the appropriate person, but the wrong person was called. The other person was not interested in having the work done so they documented that on my records. I told him I would give him another shot, unfortunately I already went with another provider for the repair of the window because of cost. We will be requesting quotes for some expansion work on either the kitchen or kitchen and second floor. Their response meant a lot and says something about their integrity on customer satisfaction.

I probably associated with about eight different people from start to finish and found them all very personable and professional. The work was very good, and their clean-up was good. Getting the job done right is certainly the most important aspect, and I am very satisfied with the job. The only problem I encountered was that on a couple occasions, once when they didn't receive a window in time, and another time when a worker was sent somewhere else on a job when he had said he'd be back that morning, they failed to show, and there was no phone call. They were also slow at the end getting everything hauled away. But alot of this was due to the fact that the project coordinator had not been on the job very long, and they were still working on beefing up their communication skills. I expressed my dissatisfaction to them and they were once again very professional and apologetic, and I am convinced that they will really focus more on this in the future, so I certainly would use them again. All in all, they did an excellent job, and as far as workmanship, you can't go wrong with them.

Overall, the process went smoothly. John stated "There is stress in having construction done. JC Smith' project management will make the process 'stress free', eliminating the homeowners anxiety!" Estimated time for completion was to be 30 days, start to finish. Actual completion was 35 days due to a "hiccup" by one sub-contractor. Project Manager Bill and John quickly resolved the problem and made certain we were satisfied with the outcome. With the exception of the one sub-contractor, everyone that worked on the project was professional, courteous, knowledgable, punctual, and tidy - they each demonstrated pride in their work! Project was completed within the Proposed Budget and the finished product reflects the anticipated Quality. We are pleased to recommend JC Smith LLC to family, friends and neighbors.

We never received a quote. I emailed about 3 weeks later and never received a response.

I was impressed with the way this company did their quote, it was broken down by area and each section could be edited without affecting the entire remodel. At this point in time I wish I had selected this contractor.

From the 1st meeting to set the price to the very end this group was on task, and adaptable to work around problems that arose (not due to anything they were doing) to being impressed watching the crews doing the work. The attention to detail and ensuring we were happy at every stage of the job was very impressive. Someone was always available to any questions we had and to the time to speak with us (even a few times I think we may have been pests). Awesome and outstanding just seems not enough when looking back. Will definitely have them back on our next project.

JC Smith, LLC responded to us and gave us a quote in the amount of time he said he was going to give it to us. We haven't decided who is going to do the work yet though.

Met with John to explain the scope of work. We had cracked plaster walls, the original hardwood floors were stained with paint and unceremoniously covered with carpet, the ceiling integrity was suspect (we had portions of the master bedroom ceiling fail within the last year, so needless to say we are suspicious of the entire ceiling) and the bathroom venting was inadequate which led to a mold build-up in the closet where the attic access was improperly sealed. John's team started a couple weeks after the quote was finalized, which was a week or so ahead of their initial timeline. Within the first day and a half, the old plaster ceiling was gone, the new drywall ceiling was up and they were beginning to touch up the plaster walls and seal up the ceiling. I left a key for the crew and had zero issues with the integrity of his crew, very professional. The entire job was done in a few weeks, including refinishing hardwood floors and painting. My last minute punch list included some items that were not on the original scope and John's people never missed a beat and took care of all the items on my list quickly and when they were done, we could not have been happier with the result. There were some communication issues with John, I didn't ding him for it, it was beyond his control that the team leader on my project left the company and I believe John did his best to pick up the ball and continue. Also, if you get flooring refinished through John, know that you need to let the flooring crew know where they can store equipment. I didn't communicate that to them and they stored all the large sanders squarely in the middle of my bathroom which made the bathroom kind of difficult to use while work was going on. The floor result was amazing, so it was a coupe days of being annoyed. All in all, an excellent job, I would strongly recommend them to anyone in the area and I will definitely use them again. --Ben Walz

Started quick, finished before I thought he would and in good shape.

JC Smith brought professionalism and a great deal of sincerity to a stressful situation. With our home being flooded the very day were supposed to move in, we sought out the assistance of a contractor who could act quickly to repair our home. John came out to my home immediately and had repair crews set up to begin work almost immediately. The team worked quickly and took a great deal of care to ensure the quality of the customer's life was not overly disrupted. John and our project manager took the time to explain each stage of the process to us and to even to calm my nerves when I would have otherwise been frantic. Their work is of amazing quality. No one would even guess any disaster happened in our home now. They are clean, professional, high quality craftsmanship, and reasonable priced. Thank you JC Smith for making my families experience a positive one!

They did an excellent job from the very beginning. The owner came and he spent a lot of time finding out what we wanted. He really got as far as in detail about what we wanted and came back with a very detail proposal. For us it was great because we like to have very detail oriented people and he had everything broken down and that was really helpful. They did a great job and everybody that worked with them was very professional and they went above and beyond. My wife pointed out to the side walk, she wanted river walk and the manager went out of his way to do a river walk for her. They spent really a lot of extra time, going out of their way to make sure it was done to what we wanted and every little detail. We highly recommend them. They may not be the cheapest, but we will get what we pay for. We are retired military, so they recognized that and gave us a discount.

They're still working. I have a nightmare remodel from hell. The price of his renovation loans was reasonable. Even the inspector was impressed with their presentation. The bank was happy and in those type of things and when you're doing that kind of stuff this is something that has to be reviewed by everybody. I couldn't have anything really big but what this is are repairs that need to be done to make it habitable. You name the issues with a house built in 1920 I've got it. I'm on a 2 or 3-K loan which covers the cost of the property renovation. This guy did what he was suppose to be doing so it was awesome but it took a very long time.

I cannot say enough nice things about JC Smith, LLC. My first interaction was with John, the owner. I left his a voice mail about the work we needed done and immediately heard back from him, a rarity for contractors in this area. John set up an appointment to come to the house to look at the damage, I was pleasantly surprised he showed up himself. We own a very unique custom build home, John appreciated the architecture, understanding this was no cookie-cutter home. We walked though the damage in the bedroom and then I gave him a tour of the rest of the home and project we want to have done in the future. He seemed excited and confident about tackling them down the line. John had an estimate to me in a few short days, I was so pleased to see that the estimate was very reasonable and not padded with extras I didn't understand. It was straight forward and to the point. We set up a meeting to review and sign it, at which time I had the pleasure of meeting Bruce and JR. The three of them carefully went over the work to be done, payment schedule and timeline, they answered every question, making me feel very confident that I had chosen the right contractors. Once the work began, Bruce became the point man. He is incredibly personable, very easy to reach with questions and honest about every step of the process. More than that, Bruce quickly became someone we consider a friend, he is genuinely interested in our feelings and opinions. I always trusted Bruce and his crew in my home. The work was done beautifully and in a timely manner. We had a delay in the arrival of our built in closet from the manufacturer, but Bruce kept in touch with me on it until it arrived. We are so pleased with our new master bedroom and even more pleased to have found our go to contractors!! I have a list of projectS I can't wait to get them started on. If you are looking for good, HONEST, dependable contractors, these are your guys. ***Additional Awesomeness - we were recently victims of a home invasion in which a lot of damage was done. I immediately contacted Bruce (in the middle of the night) and he immediately responded. He had someone out to the house the next day to check on the damage and be sure the temporary boarding was secure. It is custom glass work that has to be done through a different company, but even though they are not doing the work Bruce called to check in to see how we are doing and even offered to check in on the work being done. Very Classy!!!

Called JC Smith in early April 2013 to schedule estimate for some work. We are interested in a deck on pool, replacement windows and installing a bathroom. We decided to have the deck added first, if work is good quality then would hire for other jobs. Contractor arrived on April 13th, 2013. We are not difficult. I wanted a deck on above ground pool and told him that since he's the expert, he could let me know what would work best. He suggested the best size and place of steps etc. It all looked fine for us. Three weeks later (May 4, 2013), we had not received a cost estimate so phoned the contractor. He said he was busy and would get something out to us. Today is May 26, 2013 and we have not heard back. We are going with a 12 X 20 deck with another company. And I'm sure they will get our other work also. I would not call this contractor again. He delayed our work while we sat around waiting on his estimate. He wasted our time.

We are hoping to work with them in the future once the insurance situation is worked out. I will be updating if we do have the work completed by John.

I contacted JC Smith for an estimate and they were prompt in responding and in coming out for the estimate. However when provided with the estimate, I feel the contractor did not listen to my specifications and there was a lot listed in the estimate that was not requested. When asked they said this is how they do there estimates and that we can weed stuff out. Well being a timeline I only wanted what I requested and was only interested in the bottom dollar; which was $15000 over the budget they were provided with. I sent an e-mail after I received the estimate about my concerns. Stating that I needed a simpler estimate and that the prices were a bit pricey. I also called and left a voicemail. I never heard back by phone or e-mail. The estimate that was provided was very detailed and I can tell a lot of work went into it. However it was not what I asked for nor what I wanted. Therefore we ended up going with another contractor:(

Although I live near Baltimore and this company is located near Martinsburg, WV, I decided to use JC Smith for my deck because I was impressed with the extensive work that the company had completed for my son on a cabin in WV. We had difficulty getting the permit for the rebuild approved with my county which caused a temporary delay in completion. John Smith personally made two trips from WV to appease the county's most specific demands. ALL personnel with whom I dealt were extremely personable and knowledgeable, especially JR Barnes, the project manager. He kept me updated on all aspects of the project.

We had damage to our house due to hurricane Sandy. The owner of the company came out to give us the estimate. He was on time and professional. He brought in a mold specialist to examine the mold. On the estimate, his price was lower due to an error on his part. He honored the price that he gave us. The owner made sure that things were done correctly and to the highest standard. He and his representatives were in constant contact by phone and email. I was very happy with the job overall.

When we first contacted JC Smith, our intention was to have them simply complete the work done the previous year by a local handyman -- screening in our deck. There were holes left where the handyman didn't ensure that the screen went all the way to the edges, there was no finished wood work on the exterior of the deck, etc. Between our first and second meetings with John, we found a leak in our roof, and at the time of the second meeting, asked for a quote to fix this leak. We also spoke with John about the various other projects (both immediate and long-term) for the cabin, including the relocation of the washer/dryer, finishing a pantry, locating and removing a particularly foul dead-rodent smell, and the complete renovation of the basement. As this is a second home, we were not able to be around every time the team was out performing the work. This caused some issues that could have easily been avoided if we were more available for questions, etc. After three visits to complete our contracted work, there was still just a small amount left to be done (finishing the stain on the new woodwork on the deck). We were out for vacation over the week of the 4th of July, and the foreman came out himself ON the 4th to finish the work to our satisfaction. This is an extremely professional and caring group to work with. We met or spoke on the phone with the company's owner, a foreman, and a site manager on multiple occasions to receive updates on the project's progress (initiated by the company, not by us). The house was left in the same condition in which it was found, clearly indicating that they treated our home as if it was theirs. Even before our work was completed, we had reffered JC Smith to my mother for a rehaul of her deck, and are already creating a list of projects to call JC Smith about for this coming year. When we are ready for the expense, we would not call anyone else to perform the total remodel of our basement -- we consider JC Smith to be OUR contractor of record!

They did the work requested in a timely workman like fashion. When I asked to do other work, costs were given that were reasonable and when I was given a price range on one project I was billed at the lower part of that range.

Everything has been excellent and their guys are great! They will be coming back in Feburary to finish the rest of our renovations.

They did a wonderful job and there’s not one thing bad that I can say about them. They did everything in a very timely fashion. They showed up when they said they were going to show up and we were very comfortable with everybody that worked in the house. They were great and I really can’t say enough about them. We were comfortable with their price as well.

They are great we had them remodel a kitchen, build a receptionist wall, build shelves for all of our certificates, insulate a pole barn building, and work on some grading issues between our 2 buildings.
