I had a major bathroom renovation and Jeremy and John did an outstanding job (ask for that team). The bathroom is on the second floor and they ensured the pathway up was covered and cleaned everyday. Jeremy communicated to me timelines every step of the way. I have worked with many contractors over the years and this team is at the top. Thanks Jeremy and John for a job well done!

Extremely well. Right from the start JC Smith worked with me, agreed to leave the finish work to me, salvaged/reused the columns and other misc details. Walked back project costs enough so that I could finally afford getting this long overdue project done! Foreman Dave, Carpenter Dave, and all the skilled labor crew were professional, capable and a pleasure to meet and work with. Jim even loaned me his sander to get the columns looking like new! They let me know when other jobs would pull them off my job and I generally knew from day to day the status. I had a few adjustments/changes to the scope of work which they accommodated just fine. I had no complaints and was grateful to find a busy contractor willing to work to fit my tight budget.

We recently purchased a home built in 1896 and decided to hire JC Smith to do the extensive re-model. From the initial assessment to the final walk through, JC Smith was a top notch general contractor. The scope of work and cost estimate were both on point; no surprises or hidden costs that threw me out of my budget. The design consultant was very helpful with the new design and material choices; suggesting good quality yet affordable products that would help me achieve the design look I wanted while staying within my budget. The job foreman was knowledgeable about every aspect of the work that needed to be done and always polite and considerate to inform me of all the daily details during the construction phase. He addressed any questions or concerns I had promptly and courteously; even when I asked multiple times because I just didn't understand. ; ) Even the sub-contractors that were brought in did great work! If I wanted something "tweaked" at the end of a particular job, JC Smith was quick to have their sub-contractor return and finish the work to my satisfaction. Every worker that passed through the doors of my home were considerate of the fact that it was my home and therefore left an exceptionally clean job site at the end of the day. To make sure that all the work getting done was to their very high standards, there were multiple calls and visits from none other than the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. I can't say enough good things about this general contractor! Thanks JC Smith for a job well done!!

The first time I called they said they would have a guy out to do the estimate on a Friday evening and he never showed or called so I called them back and he said the estimator was on vacation that day. I'm not sure why you would schedule an estimate if you know your estimator is out. Then he said he would re-schedule the estimate for a Wednesday evening and the guy finally showed up. He spent a half an hour going over what I needed and took measurements and notes and said it would take 7 to 10 days for the estimate to be completed and he would e-mail it to me. Fast forward three weeks later and I have still not gotten the estimate OR a phone call. It seems as though they simply do not need the work or they are VERY unorganized. I gave them a call initially because of the great reviews but I would not waste my time waiting on these guys anymore. He gave me a verbal estimate of $10,000 to $15,000 but no response.

[Member Name Removed], I apologize that I am just now responding to this review. We have not been utilizing this service and have not accessed this account since 2016. More importantly, we sincerely apologize that you were not extended the professional and well-organized service that we offer all of our new clients to be coordinated for the consultation, but with numerous new clients contacting us daily, sometimes mistakes are made. Thank you for bringing light to an important concern. Sincerely, The JC Smith Team

Everything started out fine, however they mis-measured and were going to have to order a VERY expensive basin (after contract). The foreman had some very creative solutions to compensate. Things fell apart when they went through when it came to the shower walls and doors. Due to the mis-measurements, they had to order expensive custom glass shower walls and doors. Very expensive, but to their defense, they ate the costs. This all led to 2 months of delays for a job that was supposed to be "two weeks, three tops". And the glass was clear when we specifically asked for frosted on more than one occasion. Once the job was done, the shower head was loose, not caulked and looked very sloppy. And a week later, the grout between some of the tiles separated and needed re-grouted. As far as communication, the foreman would routinely text saying they'd be there "the next day" or he'd contact me "later today" or "tomorrow" but quite often did not followup until 2-3 days later or only if I reached out. Aside from these hiccups, the work turned out nice. It was just far too many poor communications, sub-contract mismanagement, and general sloppiness that really sank this company for us.
Description of Work: We needed a new shower installed, new floor, and a few other odds and ends.

November of 2014, my wife, my son and our golden retriever moved to a new housing development in Martinsburg, West Virginia. We moved to a new two story home with a basement. The laundry room was located on the top floor. Unfortunately the code-required floor drain was not provided in the laundry room. On January 2, 2017 we had a flood in our home. The flood was caused by the water pipe connection which burst. The water migrated to the hallway and other areas in the master bed room, closets and the to the kitchen, family and dining rooms below. The kitchen ceiling had to be restored. We chose JC Smith, LLC builders from Angie’s List and we received two bids to repair the flood damage. The bid prices from both builders were close. We chose JC Smith, LLC because of the size of the firm. We were happy to choose them. The firm dedicated a team to work on our project and a project manager was assigned to lead this team. The team was professional, attentive and responsive to our needs, and fun to work with them. At the beginning of the project they explained the scope which included the cost, materials, and the project schedule. The work was done by experienced professionals, and they made every effort to make the construction activities not to interrupt our daily lives. We would gladly recommend JC Smith, LLC without hesitation.

It is under contract. I am pleased with what the proposal was and what his recommendations were. He was the only one who responded on Angie’s List. I have had a couple of contractors that I personally consulted who have not bothered to call me back. When he did respond and coming the distance that he does come to see me regarding this renovation, I was impressed. So, I am very happy with what he has done so far, but the work has not been done yet. It is decided to begin on Monday. He seemed to know exactly what I wanted and made some suggestions. His proposal came with a price that I was anticipating and I believe it is reasonable for all the work that he is doing. He was very punctual. In our first meeting, he was going to be an hour late, but he called me and said that he was going to be an hour late than he has expected and gave me the reason why. I am very pleased with his responsiveness to me and our appointed time.

Their prices are medium high but worth it. They were here earlier than they said. Their prices are medium high but worth it. They have wonderful people working with them, the team leaders as well as the initial estimator and the office staff was wonderful. I have project pending and I will use them.
Description of Work: They repaired the roof of the shop area which is quite large. Then a different team, they work in teams came in the house and I had three wall air conditioners removed and the wall put back up, and the siding and the shutters put back up which they had a gentleman out there who was excellent. I couldn’t have asked for a better job.

First, I want to say that our major issue with JC Smith is not the quality of the work or the professionalism, but rather the questionable way they do some of their pricing and estimates. Shortly after July 4, we had a pipe burst in our basement which meant that half the drywall on one wall and all the carpeting in our basement needed to be replaced. Having worked with them previously, my husband contacted JC Smith for an estimate. The owner, John, came out himself to do the estimate. He was polite and courteous. He told my husband that they frequently do water damage repair so are familiar with the requirements for insurance reimbursement and that they would take care of and handle everything… even arranging to have our pool table moved when necessary. He assured us that the estimate would include repairing the basement to the same quality it had been prior to the damage. After about 3 weeks (early August) we got the estimate, which wasn’t a big deal because we weren’t in a huge rush. Bill came out to give us the estimate and, just like John, he was very polite and professional. As we were going over the estimate, we inquired about the allowances for padding and carpeting. Bill told us we had an allowance of $3.00 per sq. ft. for carpeting and that the estimate included basic padding. We told him the estimate would have to be corrected because we had upgraded padding and expected the replacement padding to also be upgraded. We wanted to submit the revised estimate to our insurance company. Since he was already out there going over the estimate with us, Bill was hesitant to have to start over and make another trip out, knowing it would take more time, so he told us “If you can keep your carpet selection to $2.70 per sq. ft. then I will make the padding work and ensure you get the padding you want.” We reluctantly (and in hindsight, erroneously) agreed. We did not balk too much at some of the charges since the cost was being covered by our insurance company, especially the almost $3200 charge to paint the basement (one large room) which was a higher charge than what we had paid to have our ENTIRE home (more than double the square footage) painted a couple years prior. Noticing that there were charges for content manipulation and debris haul away, we asked about that and Bill explained that JC Smith would tear up the existing carpeting and move the furniture around to do so and it was also for carpet installation. We asked if that could be done first so we could take care of some pet stains on the concrete floor. He indicated this would not be a problem. So, we gave him a hefty deposit, signed the papers, he said they were scheduling about 3-4 weeks out and he would schedule us as soon as we got our carpet choice to him, and then he left. We went to Home Depot and selected out carpet, meeting the budget he asked us to and sent the sample specs to JC Smith. We figured we were also saving money because Home Depot does free installation. However, fast forward to end of September/early October (almost two months later) and we still had not been contacted. In the meantime, having run out of the ability to wait, we ripped up the old carpeting and disposed of it ourselves so we could treat the stains as necessary. We simply could not wait any longer for JC Smith as 3-4 weeks had turned into two months and we had no idea when work would begin. Work finally began on Friday, October 22 with the carpet installed on Thursday, October 28. Tim, the Project Manager was terrific. Very professional, polite, and did great work. When a MAJOR snafu occurred where the wrong carpet had been ordered, he was quick to try to resolve it. As a compromise, we agreed to keep the wrong carpet if they would replace the carpet in a small room off the basement which now would not match. Everyone was happy. However, nearly a month later, the carpet error still has not been fixed and we are waiting for that to happen. Much of that is due to a billing dispute that we are working to resolve and which I will explain below. As previously mentioned, we were asked to keep our carpet selection at $2.70 rather than $3.00 per square foot to make the padding work. However, as Home Depot does, because the carpet was ordered under my husband’s name, we were also sent a copy of the carpet invoice. JC Smith charged us over $1400 more for carpet/padding than Home Depot charged them. Of course we realize that JC Smith is a business and profits need to be made so we expected mark-ups. What we did not expect was such a large mark-up IN ADDITION to the 17.5% margin they tacked onto the overall bill total. In addition, JC Smith charged us for content manipulation nd debris haul away, which they did not do. When we inquired about it, we were told “Well, the work was performed by one of our subcontractors acting on behalf of JC Smith (i.e. Home Depot).” It made no difference to them that Home Depot did not charge THEM for these actions nor the fact that we had to rip the carper up ourselves. They would not budge on the almost $500 in charges for work that they did not actually do. By their explanation, they could have charged us additional fees to carry the carpet in because, well SOMEONE did it. Didn’t matter if they were charged. When we tried to dispute the cost of the carpet issue with JC Smith, at first, we were rather rudely told “Well actually, your flooring cost $3.64 per square foot so we actually GAVE you an allowance.” The gentleman tried to act as if JC Smith did us a favor, when actually, they just padded their pockets more by us choosing a cheaper carpeting, at their direction. Nevermind the fact that the estimate included an allowance for $3.00 per square foot for carpet alone IN ADDITION to padding. All said, JC Smith charged us $4907 for carpeting/flooring (considering flooring charges, charges for “content manipulation”, charges for “debris haul away” and a 17.5% markup) although they were actually only charged $2220 by Home Depot who actually did the installation…. And didn’t charge JC Smith a dime to move the furniture around. I guess, at the end of the day, the joke is on us for not insisting on a revised estimate. We have tried to come to an agreement with them on removing some of the charges based on us being given false information and also for being charged for work we ultimately had to do ourselves, but the customer service rep has been unwilling to even acknowledge that the billing practices are shady. We have been forced to contact an attorney to discuss our options. At the end of the day, the DID do good work. I would just recommend that you ask any and ALL questions up front and make sure you fully understand their rather complicated (by design I assume) estimate and pricing document. Otherwise, you’ll be charged far more than you probably should be.

We couldn't be happier with the result. I keep taking pictures like the place is a work of art! Looking forward to the next project with JC Smith -- John, Chrissy, Bill, Morris, Jereme, Chad, Joaquin, Dave, Kaydie. They know we are thankful, and they have our highest recommendation for not only quality and value but also the rare benefit these days of honesty, integrity, skill -- and they really care. They understand this is your home and when they are gone, you ultimately live your life in their masterpiece. They treat your home like their own -- and you can't ask for more than that.
Description of Work: We moved to our summer cottage on the Shenandoah in Riverside, WV from DC but needed some repairs, upgrades, and aesthetic changes -- many of which developed during the project with our input and theirs. That collaborative flexibility was really great. We ended up with an external facelift with Hardie plank siding, new windows, a completely revitalized wood floor screened in porch, replaced gutters and damaged drywall, structural and aesthetic enhancements everywhere including copper roofs on two bay windows and an artistic wood feature beautifully translated from a picture I provided. JC Smith LLC and their team of professionals did a fantastic job and were good, flexible, reliable, friendly people throughout.

We hired JC Smith, LLC in April, 2016. From the start, our consultations on the concept of our project by their senior management were met with an attitude of being personally involved and responsive to making sure the project would be completed to our expectations. Our carpenters, who were on the job daily, were not only the best in terms of craftsmanship, but were always ready to consult with us on the specifics of the project. It was a pleasure to work with them. As with all projects of this size, it is prudent to review and ensure that all change order credits/changes (if any) are credited in a timely manner. We would definitely hire JC Smith, LLC again!

My husband and I scheduled for someone to come out and take a look at our back deck. We've been having issues with drainage underneath our deck. We were looking to get a quote on what to do as far as fixing the retaining wall that we have as well as how to fill it. Well when my husband call to find out when the person was coming the women who answered the phone that day was very rude and had an attitude. The guy came first thing in the morning which was nice. He spoke to my husband told him exactly what he recommended. He told my husband that he would send us a quote in a week or two. Well that was over a month ago. Never got a quote. A little frustrating when we were looking to have everything finished my the fall.

John Smith came over on 1/22/16 and said he would provide an estimate in a week. The big blizzard hit a couple of days later and I received a note on 1/28/16 saying there would be a delay - which I understood. However, when I didn't receive an estimate in the next 4 + wks. , I wrote and asked if they forgot about me. I was then provided an estimate on 3/7/16 which was 'over the top' in my estimate so I asked for another estimate for just one part of the job. Received that on 3/14 and I thought that was very high as well (inserting a door where a window is) and asked on 3/22/16 if there was any way they could cut the cost as I thought that nearly $2000 just for the door was high (total price for labor & door was over $4000). I never received a reply.

Unprofessional, unorganized, disrespectful, non-communicative and fraudulent. So, I?ll start my explanation by saying that we are 2 working parents who are looking for help with a few home improvements. We assumed that using a general contractor would benefit us due to the fact that we had multiple areas of work to be done and we were willing to accept the fact that there would be some mark up on the cost of work because of a GC. Our experience with JC Smith started out poorly when our initial scheduled appointment got rescheduled the afternoon of. Obviously after we had already made arrangements to be home. They claimed there was an emergency with another client. So we obliged and rescheduled for 6 pm two days later. Fast forward to 6pm the day of the reschedule. No one shows. 40 minutes later we get a call that the estimator is on his way. He claimed that he was stuck in a meeting. Bill Miller finally arrived shortly after 7. He seemed to be a nice gentlemen and was receptive to the work we needed done. For this specific project we needed to have an HVAC system moved, water closet updated, and the appropriate electrical and drywall work done after the work. I let Bill know that this was our first project and that there would be more to come for a good GC. We even spoke about a fencing project were he confided that I should just go with Long Fence because they were just going to subcontract out to them and put a large mark up on it. That should have been a warning to me but I saw it as honesty. At that point Bill assured me that he would be in contact within 7 days to schedule a plumber and HVAC tech to look at the system so that an estimate could be established. He said that we would have an estimate a week after that. He assured me that JC Smith has estimates to customers with in 2 weeks. 7 days later. We had heard nothing. We decided to follow up. Bill said he could schedule a visit from an HVAC tech but it would have to be during business hours. Again, we are 2 working parents and that made it slightly difficult to schedule. But before we could confirm a date and time they showed up to the house with out us home. Bill called asking were we were at. Working, obviously. At that point he said it was ok and he should have enough info for an estimate. He said he would have us an estimate by the end of the week. It didn?t happen and we heard nothing. We had to follow up the Monday after. He said he would definitely have something for us Wednesday. Wednesday night hit and we had heard nothing. We called and said we needed an estimate or we were going to have to start looking elsewhere. At that point we finally received and estimate. After reviewing, it was missing items, non itemized as promised and obviously drastically inflated. It was over $38,000 for the small amount of work we wanted done. I assume they just wanted to get us off their back at that point. We let Bill know how displeased we were with the estimate. He became argumentative and told us that everything was in there that was asked for. It wasn?t. After that he told us that we were treating HIM disrespectfully and proceeded to decline our job. His words ?Good luck finding someone else?. We were displeased and let him know that we would be contacting his boss. At that point he commented ?Wow, you are not a very nice person are you??. The next day we posted our review of JC Smith on Facebook. Their response was to call us incessant and demanding. We weren?t, we were just expectant upon the information that they provided and told us. At one point they claim that they will have discussions with their team on how to handle discourteous clients. This is obviously a snarky indirect way of calling us discourteous. Please make sure you read it below because its quite disturbing they way they describe the ?understanding? of their clientele. At this point I wondered how we had such poor service with such a highly rated company. So I did some research. It appears as if several of their ratings come from people that either don?t live in the area, haven?t had work done by them or the owner himself! That?s odd? but still?they have been awarded the Best in West Virginia Building Award from the Home Builders Association of WV?.oh wait?the owner is a director of the HBAWV.
Description of Work: Absolutely nothing except give us a ridiculously high estimate and bad customer service.

Our driving to measurement meetings, experienced employees spending hours consulting with clients, and the estimating/purchasing team and tools to create detailed proposals are an incredible cost to us, but all part of a free service to our clients that we are all to happy to continue to provide. We met the client and had a professional and thorough proposal returned within 14 business days, including the clients items discussed, as my manager had explained to them. Due to the urgency the client created we reprioritized over 68 clients waiting courteously for their proposals to return their proposal. My manager was called to action repeatedly after hours at 7p, 8p, and 10p on numerous evenings to accommodate in this circumstance. This is time he doesnt get paid additionally, and as a company we dont insist on providing after hours for this service. My manager did finally respond, after being threatened and insulted, that we respectfully declined to work with them, that they were not nice, and good luck in finding another contractor. We do not thrive on responding this way, and we did have a team meeting to discuss how to handle similar circumstances. We do absolutely have honest, vetted, and legitimately more positive reviews and responses from actual clients that we performed our entire scope of services. I was proudly serving as a State Director of the HBAWV, but I am currently not serving on the State board. Their website is out of date and will be corrected. I am currently serving as the director EPHBA. Neither capacity of volunteering is capable of influencing the statewide competition for Best in or Best of West Virginia. We submitted our competition entry packages and were judged integrally as all the other builders were. Fortunately, we all can reside comfortably in the fact that we dont have to work together. Thank you for the opportunity, thank you for the learning experience, and best wishes.

We are really pleased with our new deck. At the start of the project, the communication between us and the company was a little sketchy but everything worked out in the long run. Morris and Jeremy, the builders, were very professional and did a wonderful job with the construction. We highly recommend JC Smith and will definitely use them again if needed.

It was a little slow in the beginning. But true to their word that removed every issue we had. There was not a phone call that wasn't returned. And in the end met all my expectations.

This was an emergency situation. J.C. Smith arrived on-time and diagnosed the problem. Due to the danger of a possible collapse of the floor, they immediately scheduled the work to commence. We met with a project manager who create a plan of action. The work crew was on-site the next week and showed up on-time. The work was completed as scheduled and within the discussed budget. I would hire J.C. Smith again. I plan on having them do some additional work in the Spring.
Description of Work: I had termite infestation that ate away the main support beam of my house. J.C. Smith jacked up the sagging floor, removed the damaged beam, and replaced it.
