Flat Rate's yellow-pages Ad displayed the Angie's List logo, so we didn't bother looking them up on the list - big mistake! When we called our regular furnace company on Monday, they said the furnace valve repair would only have been $10 or so, not $500! Add to this the trip charge for two guys (the first guy needed to call in a second guy) and that only the repair guys could smell the gas leak which turned a clogged drain into a major repair job, and I'd say we were taken to the cleaners!
Description of Work: We called Flat Rate because we had a clogged drain on a Saturday afternoon which we could not open with our hardware store snake. When the service guy showed up, he said he smelled gas and diagnosed leaks in the valves for both the water heater and furnace. They cleared the drain ($200) replaced the furnace gas valve ($500) and the water heater and the gas valve for it ($1400).

I called around a bit on Friday night to see who would be available. Most of those companies that do not charge extra on Saturdays were already booked up, so I was happy to see that Flat Rate keeps Saturday hours. I asked for the morning (as early as possible) and I believe we were the first stop for the day. The plumber was professional and fast. I was disappointed to learn the cost for such a short project (a little bit of arguing). Unfortunately I could have called a different plumber who would have come much later and charged about the same for Saturday service.
Description of Work: The kitchen sink was stopped up (this is the second time in about a year and a half). The reason seems to be the build up in the galvanized pipes we have. When I originally tried to plunge the sink and snake it, lots of black junk came up that was not a pleasure to smell.

Was prompt and very courteous. Explain problem and left no mess. Came at the time we requested and unclogged the toilet within minutes of arriving. Definitely will request them again.

I am very displeased!!!! I priced out the materials afterwards and the most they could have been would have been $75.00. Then at the most it took him an hour to fix it. So if he would have charged for two hours it should have not have come up to this amount of $750.00. My neighbor had them change a washer on her bathroom faucet for $350.00. She could have bought and installed a whole new one for that price. These aren't the only stories I have about this contractor.
Description of Work: My hose bib for the outside water had frozen and split. I had this contractor come out and replace the hose bib.

FLAT-RATE CAME, THEY SAW, THEY CONQUERED. SEEMED A TOUCH PRICEY FOR A FREON RECHARGE, BUT BECAUSE A) THEY CAME WHEN I NEEDED THEM, AND B) I HAVEN'T HAD A FREON RECHARGE IN SO LONG THAT MY RECOLLECTION OF WHAT IT COSTS MIGHT NOT BE ACCURATE, I WOULD CONSIDER THEIR RATES QUITE FAIR. THE FELLOW THEY SENT WAS KNOWLEDGEABLE, EFFICIENT, AND CONSCIENTIOUS OF MAKING CERTAIN THAT I RECEIVED MY MONEY'S WORTH. THIS WAS A GOOD EXPERIENCE.

THEY USE INTIMIDATION OF ENFORCING PLUMBING CODE VIOLATIONS TO IMPLY AND ATTEMPT TO JUSTIFY HIGHER COSTS. THEY GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE FOR A WATER HEATER FOR $1305, I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT WOULD BE FOR BOTH WATER HEATERS. I DIDN'T KNOW THAT THEY HAD ALREADY BILLED MY SON IN LAW FOR ONE OF THE WATER HEATERS AT $1305 4 DAYS EARLIER. THE SAME REPAIR MAN WAS ON THE JOB BOTH DAYS, AND HE DIDN'T MENTION THE BILLING ISSUE EITHER. I'VE CONTACTED THE COMPANY AND THEY HAVE OFFERED TO DISCOUNT $200 OFF OF EACH BILL, BUT I'VE BEEN GIVEN ESTIMATES FROM OTHER PLUMBERS ON THE SAME WORK FOR $600-$700. I FEEL THEIR PRICING IS VERY UNREASONABLE AND THAT THEY SHOULD FURTHER DISCOUNT THE BILL.

DO NOT HIRE THESE PEOPLE. HIRE A UNION HOURLY PLUMBER. THIS WAS ACTUALLY A $700 - $800 QUALIFIED PLUMBER'S JOB. THE PLUMBER, DID THE WORK WITH MANY ''REDO'' EVENTS. TACKED ON $400 EXTRA THAT I NEVER APPROVED IN WRITING BUT WAS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE JOB. FLAT RATE IMPLIES NO EXTRA CHARGES TO COMPLETE THE JOB. I WAS TOLD EARLIER IN THE WEEK BY ANOTHER ''FLAT RATE'' PLUMBER THAT THE JOB WOULD START AT AROUND $350. REPORT UPDATE: AJ, THE LOCAL MANAGER GAVE ME A $600 DISCOUNT ON THE $1800 AFTER I SUBMITTED MY REPORT. HOWEVER, HE ADMITTED NO WRONG DOING. HE OFFERED ME THE PERSONAL "HOOK-UP" ON FUTURE WORK. SORRY, MY ORIGINAL "F" RATING OF THE COMPANY STANDS. I WILL NOT RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE. A PERSONAL DISCOUNT FOR ME NEITHER EXCUSES THEIR OVERCHARGING POLICY NOR BUYS MY SILENCE ON THEIR UNFAIR PRICING, UNCLEAR PROCEDURES AND UNQUALIFIED EMPLOYEE.
Description of Work: I GOT 6 HOURS WORTH OF WORK FOR $1800 (DRAINS & FAUCET ON NEW DOUBLE SINK). I SUPPLIED ALL PARTS EXCEPT PVC PIPE. PLUMBER COMPLAINED OF BACK PAIN AND SAID HE HAD ALREADY TAKEN MEDICATION THAT DAY. MAYBE THAT IS WHY HE HAD TO RUN TO THE TRUCK 5 TIMES, 3 TIMES AS HE MIS-MEASURED THE SAME CONNECTION. UPON MORE CAREFUL SCRUTINY OF THE ORIGINAL $1400 (FLAT RATE) BID HE CHARGED ME $637.12 FOR A ''CODE VIOLATION ON A WASTE LINE''. THE OLD PIPE WAS ALREADY REMOVED SO THERE WAS ONLY PIPING THE NEW SINK WHICH WAS ALSO LISTED FOR $414.83. REMAINDER OF ORIGINAL ESTIMATE $377.55 FOR INSTALLING THE FAUCET. I WAS LED TO BELIEVE THAT THE INFLATED $1400 BID WOULD COVER ALL EVENTUALITIES TO COMPLETION. AN EXTRA PIPE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. VERBAL QUOTE FOR ANOTHER $400 TO FINISH THE JOB.

WHEN MY HUSBAND WENT DOWNSTAIRS TO SEE WHY THE FURNACE WASNT HEATING, HE NOTICED A STICKER FROM THE PREVIOUS HOMEOWNERS FROM FLAT RATE. THEY CUT A PVC PIPE OFF, INSERTED HIS HAND, REMOVED A TENNIS BALL, THEN REPLACED THE PVC.
Description of Work: MY HUSBAND TURNED THE FURNACE ON AND THE HOUSE WASNT WARMING. HE WENT DOWNSTAIRS, SAW FLAT RATES STICKER AND CALLED THEM THAT DAY, IT WAS A SUNDAY. WHEN I CALLED THIS MORNING AND TALKED TO MANAGEMENT AND QUESTIONED THE EXPENSIVE CHARGE, HE SAID "WE ARE A UNION SHOP ON SUNDAY, WE DO NOT CHARGE BY THE HOUR, BUT BY THE JOB. WE ARE UNION WORKERS AND YOU EITHER GOT A MASTER PLUMBER OR A 4 YEAR JOURNEYMAN." HE SAID IT INVOLVED A 2" PLASTIC LINE THAT WAS 3 FT LONG THAT HAD TO BE CUT OFF AND REPLACED. "I ASKED WHAT WOULD IT COST TO HAVE WORK DURING THE WEEK HE SAID "$39 FOR A SERVICE CALL, THIS JOB WOULD HAVE COST $456 DURING THE WEEK. BUT THAT THE SERVICE CALL JUMPED 400% TO $159 AND THE PRICE OF THE JOB WENT FROM $486 TO $743 PLUS CHANGE. THE PAPERWORK STATES THE PREMIUM RATE IS $102 AND HE CHARGED $159. THEIR TIME LOG STATES 9:49AM DISPATCH, 10:13AM ARRIVAL AND 11:21AM DEPARTURE.

Our technician arrived on the job with a fully stocked truck and after a visual diagnosis of the problem, our technician gave this customer a complete written quote on the service that would be provided before he began any work. They had the right to only pay the service call previously agreed upon, in this case $159, and call other companies for prices. They elected to have the work done. This was a Sunday emergency service call, which is charged at our premium rate. The $102 they refer to is the cost of the additional diagnostic fee, which was not even charged to this customer. They knew all the prices up front and elected to have the work done as proposed. He then agreed all work was completed to his satisfaction by his signature.
