I've been going to Randy & Sarah (State Of The Art Import - owners) for about 6 - 7 years now for our vehicles. What attracted me to them firstly, was a friend's recommendation and the fact that these people have an incomparable work ethic and honesty that is just harder to find these days. They don't, or won't do unnecessary maintenance or repairs to your vehicle just because the vehicle manufacturer's maintenance schedule book says so. Many will do this (i.e. the dealer) anyway even if it doesn't need it! I suppose what I'm trying to say is, they use a good common sense approach to this. If it (your vehicle) needs something, and it's a more critical or necessary nature, Randy will tell you first about it. AND only then, he'll perform it after YOU give your approval on it. By the way, State Of The Art Import will come in at a price consistently well below the price of the car dealer. You'll see why ( hint: their overhead's much lower). The only down side to going here is you'd really have to have it pre-arranged for your own transportation as you'd most likely be leaving your vehicle here ALL or most of the day (i.e. 8 am - 5 pm). They work on domestics, Asian, Japanese, and European vehicles. They will not do service on those run-flat tires. Nor do they have the equipment for them. Don't even bother. I'll keep going back here, as long as I keep getting treated this way. I can't see that changing for now. I can confidently place my trust in them and I feel very comfortable in doing so. They are a rarer find.

In State of the Art Auto and proprietors Randy & Sarah, I have the often-desired but rarely obtained trusted neighborhood mechanic. They've helped us fixed many things -- always being honest, upfront and trying to help us find ways to cut cost when they can. It is so nice to be able to have somewhere to take my car and be greeted by a smiling face who has come to know us and us them. Sarah & Randy are basically our family physician for our cars.

I've been going to State of the Art for about 4 years now and I'm very pleased with the quality of work that they do and with the integrity of their business ethics and customer service. I think it's rare when you find a shop where you can feel confident that only what needs to be done will be done, and done right. I also appreciate the time that Randy and Sarah take to explain the work and answer any and all questions. Two thumbs way up!

I pointed out several issues I was having with my vehicle. They diagnosed all of these issues for me and gave me reasonable estimates for correcting these issues as well. I was very pleased - they were quick, thorough, reasonably priced, courteous and professional. This was the best auto service I have had in 10 years of living in Wisconsin!

Dropped off the car in the morning, chatted with the owners and met Lady, their latest foster dog (a collie). Got a call within half an hour to let me know two tires needed replacing and my oil was very low, and to give me prices for tires and service. Owner also took time to chat about checking my oil more frequently. He suggested I just stop by every thousand miles so they can quickly check the oil for me and top it up if needed. Got a timely call later in the day to let me know the car was ready, stopped in with my 6-year-old daughter to hang out with Lady a little more (owners provided treats for my girl to give the dog), and headed out with a car that's running very nicely again. If you care about quality local businesses, this is where you bring your car. If you care about honest, well-priced service and repair, no frills and no padding, just great service, this is where you bring your car. It's a little out of the way for us, but we wouldn't go anywhere else.

We took our 2006 VW Passat into the Boucher VW because the air conditioner wasn't working and the breaks were squeeking. We were provided an estimate for the work and a charge of $115 for "Diagnostics". (This car has always been serviced at this same dealership and we have never been charged for "Diagnostics".) When the dealership's service manager was questioned about the charge he said it was a common charge and that if we had the work done with them they would subtract the "diagnostics" charge from the cost of repairing the air conditioner. Even with that subtraction, the total estimate for front and rear breaks (with rotor replacement) and air conditioner repair was almost $2000 from Boucher VW. We decided to look elsewhere for service and found State of the Art on Angies List. We scheduled an appointment and dropped the Passat off. State of the Art advised that we have the same work done as the dealer recommended but their estimate was about $350 less. We appoved the work. At the end of the day, we received a call stating that the front brakes and the air conditioner were fixed but not the rear breaks. To my surprise, they said the rear breaks would need to be serviced at the dealer because our Passat was the "Sports" model and had an electronic emergency brake that they weren't able to service. This is the only reason I gave State of the Art a "B" for "Quality". I wondered why I wasn't informed, at the time of the estimate, about the special rear brakes? I was hoping to be finished with all car repairs by days end. Instead I was facing not having my car for another day while it was at the dealership to fixed the rear brakes. Despite this, I will be taking my Passat back to State of the Art and I will be taking my new Nissan Pathfinder there as well. There is no better way to send a message to a dealership about my displeasure with their price gouging and "Diagnostic" fees except to go somewhere else. We also really appreciated the friendly interaction with State of the Art staff. We recommend this business very highly.

My wife and I have historically been very dubious of auto mechanics in general. This is the result of several interactions with mechanics who took advantage of our lack of mechanical knowledge. We never knew if we were being duped into overpaying. For that reason, we procrastinated when things began to go wrong with our Subaru. We finally decided to use Angie's List to find a mechanic. Our experience with State of the Art put us at ease from the first moment. Randy's honesty and forthright manner was very refreshing. It was apparent that he wasn't just playing the role of honest mechanic, he was the real deal. He diagnosed each of our four problems and presented us with our options. I can't say enough positive things about our experience. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: We had multiple issues with our Subaru Outback. None of the issues were significant problems--but there were four different areas that we asked them to address. brake inspection (squeaking) diagnose/resolve rattling (rattling of heat shields) diagnose/fix suspension problems (front stabilizers) diagnose premature tire wear

We chose them mostly based on our experience. We did a search on Angie?s List of places that repaired imported cars, because it was a Honda that we were having fixed. We shopped around based upon the prices. We didn?t want to go with the lowest nor with the most expensive. We called to find out who was available and so forth. They were good and they had a guarantee. They were flexible in terms of getting the car in for service and payment. They quoted $2500 for the work and said it wouldn?t be any more than that but the final bill was $2900. I understand that it is difficult to quote until they take a look at the vehicle, but I was a little surprised by the overall price. I did all the financial stuff through my son. I live in Chicago and he is the one who lives in Milwaukee. I don?t think we said anything about going out on Angie?s List because they were supposed to have a discount, and we didn?t get that either. On the flip side, I was able to call them and give them my credit card information. They took that over the phone, and my son was able to pick up the car without any problems. We would use them again in the future if necessary.

Thank you so much for taking the time to send in a report. Since most of our communication was through your son, I just wanted to let you know that the transmission was indeed $2500. The remaining cost was for a requested tire rotation ($18.75), replacement of additional parts (RF axle & motor mount -$199.98 w/ no additional labor charge), towing charge ($65) and sales tax ($156). We do indeed offer an Angie's list discount, but I don't have any record that you requested one. Thank you again for your feedback and for choosing us to work on your vehicle.

I went in because my check-engine light was on and because I was about to drive the car from Wisconsin to California. They scanned the car's computer and found it needed an oil change and some computer upgrades (computer upgrades that only the dealer could perform). While changing the oil and leveling off fluids they discovered that my tires should be rotated and that an accessory belt needed changing. They called me with the quotes for these additional services and they were done. Everything was ready by 2 pm after dropping it off at 8 am. No surprises, no disappointments. Very friendly and professional.

I scheduled an appointment that accommodated my schedule, dropped-off car in the morning and received a call a couple hours later when the job was done. The lock works very well and the push-buttons appear to be new (the white lettering on my original buttons was beginning to wear-off). Parts and labor were only $40. I had originally requested an oil change (my well-maintained 13-year old Saturn has over 140,000 miles and still gets over 38 MPG!), but when I picked-up my car, I was told that I did not need an oil change, so none was performed. I was told that although I was within a few weeks of my 3-month date, I was only 1,000-miles into the 3,000-mile limit (a few weeks ago, my business moved to 2-miles from my house, so I will have to determine the proper time to change oil). They did notice that one of my tires was low on air, so they inflated it at no cost.

State of the Art did a complete front and rear brake job replacing pads and rotors last August. Last week the rear brakes started making noise and dragging. We were in a bind because our other car was in the body shop; I called Randy and he had me come in right away, found that the rear calipers had failed and installed new calipers and replaced the pads and rotors under warranty - the same afternoon! Randy and his crew do excellent work and went out of their way to help us. I'll use them again and will definitely recommend them.

Our family was preparing to make a trip out of state for the Holidays. There was a leak that I noticed and I wanted to get it looked at prior to leaving. Several events made us have to postpone the appointment. Finally, the day before Christmas Eve I called and they said to bring the van in to have it reviewed. The water pump was leaking. The shop was preparing to close down for the Christmas Holidays. Randy and his crew decided to stay, get the replacement part and fix it all on the spot. They could not have been more customer service oriented....and we arrived at our destination for the Holidays without any problems.

State of the Art Import Auto Repair does a great job and the owner is very honest. He wont repair anything that doesn't need to be fixed. I have been very pleased with their services and I have heard many other people say the same thing. He used to be part of another company and when he started his own company I decided to move with him because I liked him so much. My girlfriend had a Sunfire that needed attention and he replaced the heater coil in the car. Six months later the heater coil went out and he replaced it for free. Almost a thousand miles later it went out again and he repaired it for free again. He recommended that we get a new car. He then noticed on that car that the dipstick was not the right size and it was causing the gauge to show that the oil tank was full when really it needed more oil. He was able to order the part for us and it was very convenient. He does specialize on imports and he does work on american cars as well.

Staff were friendly and professional. App't was easy to make, and car was done on time. The only glitch was that the ABS sensor loosened during axle repair, so I had to go back a few days later to get that screwed back on. When I called back to say the sensor was going off, Randy was immediately apologetic and identified the likely problem (he was right). I appreciated that he didn't try to blame the car and took responsibility for it. When I went back in they took only a few minutes to fix the problem and also gave me a free oil change card, which really wasn't necessary as the sensors on this car always seem to be coming loose or failing. Frankly, I was grateful they didn't try to stick me with replacing an otherwise working sensor, as I suspect happened last year w/ a few other sensors when I took the car into a dealership repair shop and ended up spending thousands to replace several "failed" sensors. The cost of this inspection and oil change was also about half what I've been paying at the dealer repair shop. Can't beat that.

I was most impressed by their customer service. The staff told me what to expect, recommended some minor maintenance work and was very honest in what I could expect long term. I was also very surprised that when I asked for the number for a cab company to get home after the tow the staff person asked how far away I lived and then offered to drive me personally. I will continue to use them for all of my repair needs.
Description of Work: I have used them a few times now for basic auto repairs. Most recently they replaced a fan belt on my Camry and a hose. They had to order the part but still turned the job around quickly taking me the same day the car was towed over and completing the work in 3 business days.

They deserve their reputation for doing great work at a fair and honest price! Randy found the problem quickly(corroded heat shield falling off)and fixed it quickly(removed the heat shield)all for under $40. AND they gave my car a once-over check to make sure all was in order AND they found no other issues. This is unlike some places(Toyota dealership)where everything costs twice as much and they always "find" more problems than you come in with. You can really trust this shop. Plus, Randy(owner)and Sarah(front office)are wonderfully friendly, as well.

Our truck was towed into State of the Art after closing. Randy called the next day with the diagnosis and estimate which seemed reasonable. I also asked him to check the other ball joint and the front brakes. He later reported that the other ball joint was fine but that the front brakes needed replacement. Picked up the truck 2 days later and it has been running fine. It was nice to use the coupon & get the Angie's List discount. (There is also a discount for Triple A members). I also scheduled a follow-up appointment to replace the front brakes. I was treated very well and now plan to be a regular customer of State of the Art.
