Everything was super smooth, from my initial phone call to final delivery. They were very nice on the phone, and it was easy to schedule a date and time within a few days of my call. On the day, they were very prompt in picking up the cabinet, and did a great job maneuvering it into my house. It was a big, heavy, oak cabinet. No nicks, no scratches, nice guys. All within an hour, so met the estimate right on. I'll probably use them for all my future moving needs.
To Hernia movers credit: they did refund us some of the overages. They returned our calls promptly upon my wife leaving them a message after the fact. They could have been like other companies and ignored us but they did not. For this reason they got a better rating today than I would have given them a couple days ago. I will use them again do to this however I will be more watchful of price and time.
After all was said and done, the move STILL took close to five hours with the three movers. Their quote was way off and the move ended up costing us significantly more than we had planned to pay.
I have spoken with Lance in regards to this review and have upgraded the overall for the experience to a C. When I initially used Hernia the professionalism was excellent. Everyone with whom I spoke in the office as well as the man who came to do the estimate was courteous, prompt, and professional. So overall for the office I would give this company an A.
After that things took a significant decline. Starting with the morning of my move. I did not receive a confirmation call the night before or the morning of my move. Because my move was before the office hours of the company I was unable to call to verify that the movers would actually be there. As I was on a tight schedule I was obviously nervous. The crew did arrive on time and started to pack my things.
This 3-man crew was not satisfactory. This is why my Quality rating for them is an F. Again the office section is a resounding A, but this crew was an F. They did not take particular care in packing our things as well as not really having any true order to where things were packed, ie. towels used as packing material, kitchen items in with living room items, etc. One of them seemed to have an negative attitude about the entire thing and was at times actively rude. Once the actual move started I didn't feel that they particularly cared whether or not any of my things made it there or were in good condition. There were no real casualties, mostly a few nicks, although one item disappeared and a lamp was broken which was not a major concern. But again they didn't seem too concerned about any of my things. Quite honestly the crew seemed more concerned about which of them could carry the most boxes at once or which of them could bench press the other two. We were made to feel as if us asking a question or asking for them to be careful was an imposition. In addition they took an off the clock lunch break that was an hour and a half but reported as 45 minutes. Price was good though it took much longer than estimated from start to finish.
So in conclusion everything up to the day of my move was an A+ but everything the day of my move was basically an F except that they did arrive on time, even though I didn't know if they would arrive at all. So all I can say is from my experience this company is very hit or miss in regards to your experience. I won't use them again, but based on other reviews on here I can't say that your experience will be as poor as mine.
"Hernia Movers moved this customer on July 12, 2013 from an 11th floor apartment in downtown Milwaukee to a two story house in Shorewood. Initially this customer filed a review on Angie’s List on March 13, 2014. A revised review was posted on March 15, 2014. The two preceding sentences are mentioned to point out that the reviews were recalled 8 months after the actual move date of July 12, 2013. The revised review, which is currently posted on Angie’s List, states: “one item disappeared and a lamp was broken which was not a major concern.” The first review does not mention this information, nor was that ever mentioned to us at any point. It also was not issue enough to mention these damages when Lance, Hernia’s office manager, called and spoke with this customer after the first review. It may not be a “major concern” to this customer but it is a concern to Hernia Movers. These would be concerns that would have been resolved by Hernia Movers. The customer also states the he did not receive a confirmation call the day before or the morning of the move. The reason a call was not made the day before or the day of was because the customer had contacted us a few days before July 12 to move up his move date from July 15 to July 12 (without issue) and it was then that we told him when we would arrive to his home on July 12. That was the confirmation call. Additionally, this customer suggests that he was overbilled for an extended lunch. That would not and is not acceptable. Hernia Movers charges for work time. We do not charge for lunchtime. Period. We would also like to address the comment made by the customer that Hernia is “hit or miss.” The service from Hernia Movers is consistent. Hernia does use temporary labor or practice “advantageous” pricing. The three men that this customer refers to are still with Hernia. They were there for years prior to this move and demonstrate not only to the management of Hernia Movers (the management this customer gives ‘a resounding A’) but to the public a strong work ethic that is second to none."
There was over salting on the premises. During the move the salt that they tracked in was inadvertent. Movers do not generally clean up so i understood the explanation. We were inagreement that the attack by members of the board at the condo were insensitive and untimely, given that we did not have time to clean while moving. That would be counterproductive. The area was cleaned once the moved was finished.
Hernia Movers and I were able to resolve this issue to our satisfaction. In particular, the call placed to me on 1/3/14 was especially empathetic to my situation and lance was more than accommodating.
In short, the ending of this situation more than covered over any issues we had with the move. As a result, I would consider this company in the future and my comments made out of frustration immediately after the move should be taken together with my final comments here.
10/17/2013 I received a phone call from Hernia after posting this review. I was offered a refund of $150.00 to compensate for the issues I had with the move and their apology. I was also asked to take down this review. I appreciate the follow-up by the company-many companies would not have done that. I am impressed with the follow-up and this customer service. Maybe the 2 movers I had were having a particularly hard day. The refund was generous. While I was a little uncertain about "taking down" my review, I feel that I at least need to let Angie's List members know that Hernia does follow-up. I did not understand that I was being offered a refund for the sole purpose of changing my initial review. Customers should always ask questions prior to any service and I based this move on a previous move I had with another company who did protect furniture. So-ask questions and Hernia will be happy to answer them and you can avoid problems later on. I am changing this review now due to the numerous phone calls I continue to receive weekly from Hernia. Hopefully this will stop them from calling me. I want to believe that Angie's List is truly based on "reviews you can trust"!
"It is difficult to address any specific or actual complaints in this review. I will, however, address the review in the order it was written. If the movers were not cordial that would be improper and be of poor manners. It certainly would not be in the movers’ self-interest to be abrasive or impolite. Secondly, a dresser drawer did get damaged. Not because of improper handling or indifference but because (this is not mentioned in the original review) a tenant of the building opened a back stairwell door which swung into the dresser and damaged the drawer. It should be noted this damage was professionally fixed shortly after the move. The review later states that the customer informed Hernia there would be “stairs to be navigated.” Hernia understands that steps and stairs are involved on moves, however what was not communicated for this move was that the elevator in the building was not working properly. To get to the sixth floor, where the customer was moving to, the elevator had to be taken to the ninth floor and the items carried down the service stairwell to the sixth floor, then the movers had to walk back to the ninth floor to take the elevator back to the ground floor. Not the norm for moving. To address the problem of the malfunctioning elevator Hernia promptly sent two additional movers. The Hernia team completed the move and unloaded an additional trailer the customer had delivered. The trailer was a last minute addition to the move, that was not communicated to Hernia’s office but the Hernia crew still handled in stride. Hernia Movers has been serving the Milwaukee area, Wisconsin and the surrounding states for over 39 years. Hernia Movers does not use day labors, temporary agencies, or indifferent third parties. This information is mentioned only as a basis of comparison; Hernia Movers is not looking to become like other movers. Hernia Movers is Milwaukee’s premier moving company and intends to stay that way."
There was only a slight glitch in that we had asked to be called when they were on their way so someone would be there to direct the movers and that was apparently not communicated to the two men who were moving the furniture. They did arrive very close to the time stated, however, and we did not have to wait too long for them to arrive. I would definitely recommend Hernia Movers.
HERNIA MOVERS LIED, MISTREATED AND STOLE FROM ME.
I booked with the owner Bill who was great and helpful with booking but it went downhill fast from there.
Hernia Movers arrived 45 minutes late at 8:45 am. They brought two trucks with them.
They were rude and obnoxious upon entering my home because everything was not packed. I was not planning on them moving everything which is why it wasn't all packed. I instructed them only to move packed boxes, but I still got rolled eyes, obnoxious groans and snotty looks.
I asked them to start in the garage and backyard where I had 40 or so boxes all packed and ready to load along with a drained hot tub, lawn furniture and grill. They blatantly ignored me and started inside my home.
The lead guy came and found me and very pleased with himself told me they weren't moving the hot tub because it was not disconnected. I already had all power disconnected from it, so I took phillips screwdriver and loosened the power cord from the disconnect. I then let him know I had it all ready and could load hot tub whenever they wanted.
Upon receiving this news, the lead mover pushed past me almost knocking me to the ground and went to tell his team they had to move the "f*&!#cking hottub". I heard commotion in my kids room and went in to find their games and bins spread all over the floor, many of the pieces broken from the fall or being stepped on. I went to the garage in tears calling the main office, only to not be able to reach Bill but someone named Lance. Lance said he'd call the movers and tell them to cool it, but his call only made the movers behave even worse.
My stuff was getting ruined right and left. I found half of the dresser's leg on the floor, broken on the way out of the house. Instead of moving my artwork that was stacked up against a wall, the movers continually knocked it every time they moved past it with a box. Two boxes were dropped by movers in the dining room only to be followed by chuckles and the men "bumping" on their dropping skills. All my questions to the movers fell on deaf ears as they moved past me ignoring me completely.
After an hour of packing inside my home, the four moving men went outside and stared at my hot tub for an hour (and yes $180/hour) at which point they came and told me they weren't moving it. When I tried to discuss the issue with them, they said they were done and heading over to my new home to unload and I should meet them there. It was now 10:42 am. They had packed for an hour and looked at my hot tub for almost another full hour. Only 1/2 of the first truck had been filled.
I asked them about all the other items in my home that needed moving. They replied, "We're done. Two hours to pack, an hour to drive and two hours to unpack." My new home was only 3 miles away and I pointed out it wouldn't take two hours to unpack items that had only taken an hour to pack. They said they didn't care and that it was a five hour move and they refused to let it go over and with that the four movers left my house.
Calls to office were not helpful and Bill was still not available. I believe I was talking to Lance but I cannot be sure. He was argumentative and would not let me get a word in the conversation. He cut me off every time I started to say anything and then started yelling at me, telling me he didn't care what his men did, that he backed them. I never even got to explain to him what happened.
.
I went to Hernia Mover's office on Pierce Street as I wanted my stuff back that they did have, only to have them again not discuss issue with me. They made us wait outside. When Lance returned to office he started yelling at us on the sidewalk outside their business and when I asked to speak with Bill, he lied and said he was Bill. Fake Bill then waved one of the men in my group to the side - indicating he would talk to him but not me. I was paying the bill and it was my furniture. The guy just came to help me move. My friend had nothing to do with the payment or arrangment - he had just come to help me. Obviously Lance is a misogynist and refuses to work with women customers at all.
End result was I paid for several hours and had to hire my own U-Haul and hire my own movers to get my stuff back from Hernia. The move wasted a whole day of my time that I took off work and left me starting at scratch the next day. I lost over $300 in unpaid vacation I took to move. I also then couldn't hire another moving company as they were all booked until the 9th of June and it was only June 3rd. Found guys to move from word of mouth but at $20/hour and renting my own moving trucks, I'm now at $2200 out-of-pocket and still not done moving.
Hernia Movers treated me with great disrespect and they did not honor their agreement to move my furnishings. They held my items hostage until I paid an unreasonable sum of money to get them back. If they treat customers like this they will not be in business much longer.
"There are two statements in (removed member name) letter that relate to fact. Otherwise, her letter is a rant, filled with distortion, inaccuracies, and inappropriate subjectivity. The two statements that (removed member name) wrote are 1) the move cost being $1,000. It did not, it cost $325.00. 2) The movers were late. They were not – the movers arrived on time. It took repeated calls from Hernias office to get (removed member name) to answer the door. The movers knocked the front door and rang the bell, hence the reason Hernia’s office called (removed member name). From the beginning (removed member name) was hostile, combative, and demeaning to the movers. We do not know why (removed member name) was acting hostile, combative and demeaning to the crew. At one point (removed member name) was yelling with vulgarities at the movers as they were taking loose, unpacked items off of bedroom dressers, and placing the items on the ground, so they could move furniture from the house to the truck. At another point when the crew was dismantling a set of bunk beds, (removed member name) again degraded their intelligence with a profanity laden rant about wasting her time and money, even though there was no possible way these beds could be moved from this bedroom as one solid piece. Please understand these are professional and experienced movers, not easily disturbed by a customer’s lack of being prepared, or somewhat unpleasant personal demeanor. (removed member name) created a hostile environment and would have warranted the movers to leave the job, but they did do the move. (removed member name) called Hernia’s office (one of numerous other calls) after the truck was loaded and on the way to her new home to inform Hernia’s office that the movers “forgot” 20 boxes and by the way she wasn’t going to pay for the move and would not be at her new house to accept delivery. Prompted by this call we, the office, called the crew chief on the move, who was already at the new house waiting to unload. We told the crew chief that the customer was not going to accept delivery, and that they should come back to the office. So here we are. Hernia is dealing with a belligerent, verbally abusive customer that will not take delivery of her goods, and is refusing to pay for the move when it is completed. If you were presented with this situation, what would you do? The truck and crew had another move scheduled after (removed member name) move, but how would you do that with a loaded truck? Well, Hernia Movers did do that move, and we did unload (removed member name) belongings. The movers even brought cardboard to cover the approach to (removed member name) new house because it was very muddy, remember that the crew has already been to the new house earlier. The actions of “rude and obnoxious” movers – I think not. It should be noted that as far as Hernia can tell (removed member name) has posted on at least 3 other review websites including the BBB, Google, and Yelp. So, it is not a resolution she seeks (this matter was resolved on the day of the move) but to harm not only Hernia Movers, Inc. but also the people that work at Hernia and the people they support. Sincerely, Bil Apostolos President Hernia Movers, Inc."
Hernia came in around the middle but promised good service and seemed
pleasant and professional so I chose them. The men who came to move us
were hardworking and efficient. I was pleased until after we had left
to drive to our new home a few minutes after the truck left and I see
the truck with all our belongings in it making a u turn on a busy road,
hitting a curb in the process and noticing the back door of the truck
was not secured. I was shocked by the carelessness especially since
they seemed to show care in my presence when they were loading the
truck.
The unloading went quickly and I was presented with a
bill. I look it over and see I have been overcharged, the mover agrees
and fixes his error. Unpacking a noticed a few items were damaged but
nothing of great value. A month or so later I am charged an additional
$150 I never agreed to, was not notified of and in fact did not owe. I called the
company and got nowhere with getting reimbursed.
