Description of Work: I contacted anderson flooring to sand and finish the hardwood floors in my house and remove existing carpet in the main floor. I dont know if Ms.Jill was on a busy week but I had to call them 2 to 3 times first before I got an answer. Anyway, Jill was very professional, came in and gave an estimate to do the floors. She went on and on about how anderson floors is the only BONA certified companies and how Bona is such a great company etc and paid little attention to the needs of the customer. Also, they ONLY do water based finish (BONA Mega or traffic HD). If you are looking for oil based finish or something other than Bona, they dont do it. But instead of mentioning it, she just went gaga over Bona and how its the next great thing since sliced bread. When we stated that the main floor is an area which will see heavy use, there was no other option but to go with Bona Traffic HD. And eventhough the cost of the product was $800 more ($120 per gallon with 300 sqft/gallon of finish), the quoted price was $2000 more than the next competitor. The work involved sanding, one quote of sealant and 2 quotes of finish. Now I've used Angies list and the 3 other contractors who gave the quote were all POH award winners. One quoted oil based for sanding and 3 coats of finish was $3800 and $4000 for the same work of 1300 sq of work. The cost of the oil based finish, ceramic water based finishes were $70-80/gallon so even if you say the products are NOT the same, the cost of the products will determine the difference in price if sanding, labor etc are constant. I am dissapointed that a company which is family owned, has had good success and continues to grow finally has gotten to the point of asking a premium for their services rather than build on their good reputation. With such high pricing, I dont know if more people will be willing to hire them esp for expensive work. And instead of just promoting Bona as the be all and end all, I think they should try and focus on what the customer needs and what he is trying to do. Its OK to do this to someone who doesnt know jack of finishes, but if someone is well read and knows a thing or two, you cant convince them with all the fluff. I hope they realize it soon. Response to Anderson floors from 4/8/13: It has been a widely accepted fact that Oil based poly's have a far superior durability than water based poly's. Bona has been trying to narrow the gap by introducing newer water based poly's to match the durability. You cant argue against it as you know this is the truth. Bona (water based system) has lower VOC's compared to Oil polys which explains the hardiness. Also, water based polys do not turn color like oil based unless using an amberizer. This could be a good thing (using maple floors) or bad thing (if you have oak and would like the natural yellow). Simply stating that a manufacturer of a product endorses you means NOTHING to the customer becoz Bona is interested in selling its product and if they have an agent, so be it. If Home Depot or Lowe's endorses a contractor, it that a huge selling point??? Your next competitors are NOT some start up companies using illegal immigrants to do their work and cutting corners so that they can give us "bargain pricing". They all have experience and have Angies list super service award winners which speaks of their service. They all use dust free systems and make sure they are done to quality. If you already know that your "Bronze, Silver" packages are not as durable as the Gold product - Traffic HD, then why try and bait the customer with the lower products as "cost cutting" measures. Any good homeowner who likes to have an area with heavy traffic use will always be compelled to use your Gold package". If your BONA product is that good, then your Bronze package should be durable enough in heavy traffic and comparable to oil based polys. Moreover, given the lower VOC's in water based polys, the more coats, the better the durability as the more coats you apply, you increase the VOC in subsequent coats. If you are truly concerned about quality, then for the pric you should be doing 200 sqft/gallon instead of 300 sq/gallon with your two quotes. So you cannot say without doubt that your competitors offer "bargain pricing" when you exactly offer that with your bronze package and then propose an upgrade. How is your different from other competitors. Ans simply downplaying others as just bargain players with not an "great quality" as your is your own narrow mindedness than anything else. If you are to stand up to your competition, you need to be reasonable with your price and NOT just rely on being the only contractor for BONA, others using substandard products are your selling point. Eventhough I appreciate that yours is a family business and a 4th generation individual is working with the company, to more forward, you have to be competitive and not just blame the competition for your loss just becoz u want your profit margin to be better.

Response from Anderson Floor Co
I am completely confused. It was well established on the first contact with our company that we did not handle oil-modified products but were still invited to give a bid none the less. The client left a message while I was out on appointments for other clients and his call was returned within 24 hours. He did not call 2-3 times before I responded. Once the initial message was left, we then played phone tag from there. Then, once at the bid, the client did not have time to listen to the explanation of the finishes that were offered because he had to show another wood floor contractor around. Had he given us the time, full attention would have been addressed to his needs and questions if given the opportunity. As far as Bona products, we have used their products for over 20 years - why fix it if it is not broke? I have had great success and personal experience with these products and have them in my personal residences as well family and friends homes over the years. And this is why: since 1919, Bona hardwood floor finishing products have been relied on for the most beautiful and durable results. Bona dedicates more resources, both in facilities and expert personnel, to the research and development of wood coatings than any other company in the world. They develop and manufacture the proprietary polymers and key ingredients used in their products. This unique position as the owners of these technologies enables Bona to maintain the highest level of quality. Each raw material undergoes a series of tests to ensure that it meets stringent specifications prior to use in producing the final product. In our personal and professional experience, we feel that Bona is the leader in the industry. Being one of their certified craftsman means that we have committed to using their complete system of refinishing and no other manufacturers' products are used. Also by being Bona Certified Craftsman, we are committed to following the best practices of the industry; no cutting corners, skipping grits, applying finishes so thin that you need three coats. It guarantees the skill of the men coming to do the job as well as the outcome and quality of the job given and we feel is a valid point to make in our presentations. Bona does make oil-modified finishes, but we choose not to use them because they are not as durable as the waterborne lines of finish we can offer. As far as cost, all contractors are different, isnt' that why you get bids?. The men that do our work is as follows: the owner with over 38 years of experience, our son (grooming the 4th generation for over 2 years) and another man who has been with us over 10 years. We pay our men liveable wages. We have also been job costing for over 12 years, we know exactly what our costs are down to the drop of finish and know exactly what we need to charge for our services. Usually differences in cost, if that dramatic, are due to cheaper materials or cheaper labor or both. We are also not a volume oriented contractor. We are more concerned about the outcome/quality of your job verses how many jobs I can put out in a week regardless of quality. Time and detailed attention is given to each and every job we do which equates to value for the services given. Unforntunately, in this industry cost can be a issue because there is definitely a difference from Bargain pricing versus Value pricing.
