Capital Heating & Cooling is incredible! They were right on time for the installation. They were professional and courteous at all times. The installation was done correctly and they took the time to make sure everything was done right. They made sure I understood how everything worked before they left and they cleaned up after themselves. Even our sales rep came out to make sure everything was going well... plus he brought some garden gnomes (he saw we had gnomes in our garden). We're a part of Capital Heating & Cooling's Precision Plan that provides maintenance and a discount on any needed repairs throughout the year. they did an air duct cleaning for us last year. Their customer service is over and above anything I've experienced with a local business. I strongly recommend Capital Heating & Cooling for any heating, cooling or HVAC needs.
Description of Work: Capital Heating & Cooling conducted an inspection of our old AC and, based on the cost of repairs, also provided an estimate for a new AC, humidifier and surge protector. Their estimate came in under budget and they were able to do the installation within a week. They removed the old AC, installed a new AC unit, whole house humidifier, updated the necessary duct work and wiring as well as installed a surge protector on the unit.

As part of our service plan, Capital recently did an inspection and tune up of our AC in preparation for summer. It should be noted that Capital is the company that did the original installation of all of our duct work, furnace, etc. When scheduling this appointment, I mentioned a concern about the duct work in the attic being incomplete. This is five years after the installation. Our master bedroom was staying cold in the winter and after looking at the duct work myself, I was pretty sure it was the problem. After he completed the AC tune up, he went up into the attic and took some pictures. A week later a crew came and corrected the duct work free of charge. We've had problems with Capital in the past, but stuck with them. They've improved by leaps and bounds and it's a pleasure to work with them now. We'll continue to use them to keep our heating/cooling systems running healthy.
Description of Work: They corrected and improved the duct work in our attic.

TERRIBLE. DO NOT hire this company! 1st we called a different company. He said since we have only lived in this house for about 3 years, the furnace could possibly be under warranty and that we should contact an authorized dealer of our furnace to come fix it. (the first guy ran a diagnostic and said we needed a new circuit board). So. Capital Heating and Cooling is an authorized dealer. We had NO heat so we paid extra to have a guy come on a Saturday. We told the woman on the phone exactly what the first guy said. Did the guy she sent bring the piece to fix the furnace??? NO. (which ended up being a blessing in the end) So. He went downstairs, ran the same diagnostic test as the first guy and said "you need a new circuit board". Ok…already knew that. Then he's standing in my dining room and asks if we've been getting furnace tune ups every year. I said no….and then it gets FISHY. He goes on to start SELLING me on a service plan where I pay A BUNCH of money every month. He even went on to say if I DO have a warranty on the furnace still it's VOIDED because of not getting tune ups every year. THEN, GET THIS. He says he would fudge it and make my warranty valid IF I SIGN UP for his service plan. (Are you kidding me??? Like seriously get out of my house.) I said politely that I was not interested. He looked at me in completely disbelief, which is very awkward in your own home to have a stranger look at you like you're a complete idiot. Very high pressure sales tactics for something I didn't even call him there to do. I thought I was calling a company to fix my furnace to have heat. So we move on from the sales stuff and I was like "ok can you fix it now??" No, he didn't have the part (even though we told the woman on the phone the exact model and exactly what we needed). So he left after I paid him $157.34 for absolutely nothing but a test that I had done the day before. I don't even know why I paid him, probably because he creeped me out a bit. A few days later the woman called me and said the part I needed would be about $600 and that it wasn't under warranty anymore. Obviously I didn't hire them again. I called around. Found a great company (Tom's Heating and Cooling). His wife said that part and service would be about $300. HALF THE PRICE of Capital. SO GET THIS !!! Believe it or not... THIS IS WHERE IT GETS GOOD. The guy from Tom's,from all his years of experience thought it was strange that I needed a new circuit board…guess what it was? I HAD A SPIDER WEB in one of the tubes in the furnace. He cleaned it out and charged me way less than $100. Capital Heating and Cooling is a sleeze-bag company. I don't recommend them one bit. On top of it the guy who was truthful and honest said that if it did turn out to be the circuit board and if I had any issues he would put everything I paid him towards him doing the job again. It's now April 20th… my furnace worked fine all winter. It was indeed the spider web, and not needing a $600 piece from Capital. I want my money back.

Very poorly. I've been quoted prices for the specific part I want installed from several other companies, but not Capital. I would very weary of agreeing to pay them to come do work before knowing the markup on parts.
Description of Work: The provider refuses to give details about item costs prior to coming to your location, even if you know the specific parts you want installed. A BIG red flag to anyone who must trust the company to offer fair prices.

Capital Heating & Cooling relies on certified HVAC technicians to identify and repair failed parts - this ensures the correct diagnosis and repair. Additionally, before performing a repair or part replacement our technicians perform what's known as a complete SYSTEM diagnostic vs. SYMPTOM diagnostic. This ensures we proactively address related issues that could cause another system failure/repair cost. A full system diagnostic requires an on-site inspection of your equipment, resulting in the most accurate and honest repair cost estimate. Importantly, all work requires customer authorization prior to being performed. A member of our management team will contact you to review the details and benefits of a full system diagnostic. Experts, including Capital Heating & Cooling caution homeowners to accept repair estimates from anyone who has not physically inspected your actual equipment. It's our MISSION to do what's right for the customer and this includes ensuring you're not taken advantage with dishonest pricing. Capital Heating & Cooling Client Services Team

I have never had such a good experience with a Heating and Cooling company in over 15 years of being a landlord and homeowner. They came to troubleshoot our 28 year old furnace on Saturday and replaced it with a new furnace on Sunday. Prior to making that decision, we were carefully guided through the pros and cons of each option, without pressure to spend or be hasty. They carefully installed the new furnace and checked and double checked for problems, advising us what to expect and how to use the new thermostat optimally. Communication was excellent, every single service person who came (including an electrician who they have come and recheck wiring) was polite and knowledgeable. We got a neatly organized folder in the mail explaining everything to us about annual service, Wauwatosa inspections, Focus on Energy, etc. I was extremely impressed and thankful that an unwelcome financial expense would seem pleasant!

Not good. They were prompt in returning our initial call but were over an hour late to their appointment. They did call ahead to say they were delayed, but we expect prompt service when paying $89 just for the service call. Upon arriving, the technician ran some tests on our furnace and said it was okay. He re-wired the thermostat as we mistakenly had wired it for a two-stage system. He suggested replacing the thermostat is problems continued. Several days later the same problems came up (fan working but not hot air blowing). I replaced our thermostat as the technician suggested, but the isssues continued with the furnace. So, it's a problem with the furnace not the thermostat. Very disappointed that the technician didn't determine during his visit. Another thing we disliked about the technician is that he took a phone call in the house for more than 5 minutes. My wife was in a rush to the leave the house, and told him that she needed to leave. He said 'okay' but then proceeded to talk on the phone for another few minutes. Pretty rude of him, in our opinion.

The Honeywell continuous retry s8610u part is approximately $100 new and the work to replace it is approximately 1 hour of labor. With my estimate of $680, I asked how the price could be justified. The service technician called the service manager who said they would throw out the $90 diagnostic charge and do the work for $680 complete. I asked how that price could be justified given even a 100% markup on the part, and an excessive 2 hours of labor at $125 would total only $450. The $680 price seemed unjustifiable. Therefore, I called the office and asked for the service manager to explain how the cost of the service fix could possibly reach $680. The service manager was never retrieved to have a conversation with me about this and instead the receptionist explained to me that they would not adjust the price and that I had a right to pay the diagnostic charge and decline the work. I explained that I was very disappointed that the cost could not be broken down for me and that it was very excessive and that I would write as much in my Angie's Review, which I am doing here. When I declined the service, I asked the receptionist and service technician to have the service manager call me later with the cost justification. If Capital does this, perhaps I will adjust my rating based on this conversation. At this point, I have not received that call. In the end, if you are a cost conscious purchaser of services, I would strongly advise avoiding Capital Heating & Cooling. Although their model could be an effective way to provide a fair price to both the service provider and customer, I strongly believe Capital uses this model to inflate the cost. Although Capital may have performed the work well (I won't know this since I declined on cost), which perhaps is customers only goal when the heating goes out, if you want both great service AND A GREAT PRICE, look elsewhere.
Description of Work: Capital Heating and Cooling has the following model which is slightly different than many contractors and to which all Angie's List members should be aware. 1) Pay approximately $90 + tax for diagnostic work and an estimate. 2) Then either accept or decline the cost of the repair work. If you decline, you pay the $90 + tax. If you accept, they do the work right there on the spot for the price quoted. In my case, Capital came to my property and did the diagnostic work. I declined the work as the estimate for a replacement of my Honeywell continuous retry s8610u was $680 + the diagnostic charge, which was very excessive.

Capital was fantastic. The boiler in my home stopped working, and the house had dropped to 55 degrees. My wife and I have a five month old, as so we were frantic to get someone here quickly to fix the boiler. After calling a few places that could not free anyone up, Capital answered and the receptionist was understanding and helpful. They said they could get someone here within four hours, and they ended up re-arranging the technician's appointment to get him here even sooner. He walked in the door about two hours after I called. Mike was excellent. He was courteous and professional, and after talking to me for five minutes, he knew what the problem was and was working on fixing it. He was upfront about what he was going and explained the costs before starting on the repairs. It took him less than an hour to have the boiler part replaced, the thermostat tested, and the whole system up and running. On top of being fast and professional, Mike was very courteous. Our five month old went down for a nap in the basement (where we had a backup heater) near where Mike was working, and he tiptoed and whispered so as not to disturb the baby. The price for the service was very reasonable, and my boiler was up and running less than three hours after I first called. I am likely going to continue to use Capital for all future heating needs, as this experience was great.

A serviceman came in the allotted 4hr time-frame, they called prior to coming and were very professional. They took apart my current thermostat to assess the connections, then they opened the panels of my furnace and assessed the connections by pulling apart wires. They put my thermostat back together and put the paneling on my furnace back together. Ultimately it was decided that I would need to pay roughly $250 and up to add an additional wire if I wanted to use the thermostat I purchased. I decided to purchase another thermostat compatible to my current furnace unit, and planned to call them another day in the future to install it. There was no rush as my heating unit was working perfectly well and I wanted to spend the time to research a new WiFi thermostat. I paid the $94 for the assessment. They left. I left my home to do errands. When I returned, my home was cold and my furnace was not working. I called them back to inform them that my furnace was working prior to them pulling apart my thermostat and furnace, and were no longer working after they had left. They sent someone back to my home the same day and within a few hours. They called again prior to their arrival. The second serviceman, also professional, looked at my thermostat and my furnace, and decided that my original thermostat was broken. Because the first serviceman who came in the morning did not check and verify that my thermostat was working prior to taking it apart, they would not admit that they broke the heating system. The manager ultimately decided that the thermostat was broken prior to their initial assessment (and that I was being dishonest about its previous working order), and I would have to pay them $350 to replace the thermostat if I wanted my heat back. I explained to the manager that my thermostat and furnace were working prior to them taking apart my thermostat/furnace (it was 72 degrees in my home the morning they came, 16 degrees outside with a wind chill of 2, I have no space heaters, etc ) and I could not pay them $350 to replace my thermostat that they clearly broke when they initially took the thermostat apart and put it back together. While I was on the phone with the manager, the second serviceman realized a wire in my furnace was loose. He secured it, my thermostat was miraculously no longer broken, I was no longer a liar. The serviceman, not the manager, apologized profusely. I can't possibly do business with them in the future. I paid $94 for them to make my previously functional heating system non-functional. Mistakes happen, but the problem lies in that the management implied that I was being dishonest about its previous working order. The servicemen were professional, the management was not. If you do decide to do business with them, I would recommend that you emphasize/point out/document/declare anything they touch is in working order (if that's the case). Because if is NOT working after they touch it, they will err on it being broken prior to them touching it and will make you pay to fix it.
Description of Work: I had a functioning thermostat and furnace; I simply needed them to assess whether a WiFi thermostat I purchased online could be installed to replace my current non-WiFi thermostat. I am looking to be able to control my heating and cooling remotely. I made the appointment about 2 weeks in advance.

We had issues with our furnace, so we called Capital Heating because of high reviews on Angie's List. They showed up on time and the service repair guy was friendly enough. It took him about 10 minutes to figure out what was wrong with the furnace. He recommended I replace the furnace pressure switch. Sounded simple enough and looking at the tiny plastic part in his hand, it didn't seem like it would be that expensive. I asked how much the part was and he told me it was $460.00! I Googled the part and it was $23.00. I understand a business marking up parts from the wholesale price. I get that and I'm fine paying a little more for the part to have a professional install it. But a 1000% markup is ridiculous! I refused to have the new part put on, but with him blowing air into the part to clear out dust, my furnace gas did turn on, so my problem was solved for the time being. For that simple 30 minutes of time it cost us $230.00!!!! When you see that a company marks up their cost of parts by 1000% to their customers, one should immediately question the integrity of the company. I will never call Capital Heating again because of this. * I felt pretty taken in the end, like I just got really ripped off! I have always found Angie's List to be spot on with past vendor recommendations. Picking Capital Heating out of the other choices turned out to be very disappointing, and I would not recommend them to any users.

We hired Capital Heating & Cooling to clean the ductwork in our new house. We assumed they would be full of debris from the construction process, but that was not the case. The technician arrived on time, and did a visual inspection of the ductwork. He informed us that the ductwork was free of visible debris and didn't think they needed to be cleaned. He inserted a camera an showed us video to make sure we were satisfied with his assessment. We sincerely appreciated this honesty and will recommend Capital Heating and Cooling to our friends and family!!

Capital Heating & Cooling uses flat rate pricing of $149.00 plus tax to install a standard customer supplied thermostat, which is what was discussed via phone. Respectfully, upon arrival we were presented with your Tekmar Boiler Control System; the project scope between installing a standard thermostat vs. a control system is quite large hence the large discrepancy in price. I used Angie's List to identify the top 6-7 rated HVAC installers in the area, and then contacted each of them to come by the house and provide an estimate. I had previously researched the issues with new systems, including makes, suggestions, and government sites (e.g., Energy Star) to learn a bit about what I should expect estimators and installers to say, and how they should answer my questions. Certainly, I'm not an expert in this area but I at least wanted to have some reasonable idea of what to look for in an HVAC company. Initial meeting w/C. Whalen went really well, but prior to that, my call w/Amber(?) at Capital indicated that she knew what she was talking about, at least in terms of some of the areas covered via web research. I had wanted to move on this quickly as the inspection of my furnace that led to all this indicated that I had a possible fire hazard and/or CO hazard, and it was going to get cold soon. So I had the unit turned off completely, and wanted representatives to come by within the next few days. Amber worked w/me to get Mr. Whalen out to the house quickly, and he did. He was very knowledgeable and answered my questions with apparent ease and conveyed expertise. My wife and I left that meeting impressed. After interviewing 7 companies, we narrowed it down to 2. The others either were too expensive, didn't answer my questions to my satisfaction, and/or just generally didn't leave me with a comfortable feeling. Anyway, we decided to XXX out the estimates of these 2 vendors, and then sent each of them the other's estimate via email, and said that we were going to choose one, and why should we go with them? In the end, I felt more comfortable w/Capital and, while a bit more expensive than some of the other estimates (including the other vendor), that was the deciding factor. There was another nitpick I had with the other vendor regarding using an existing line instead of replacing it with a new one, which Capital said was needed but the other place did not. So we went w/Capital. They arrived on time, and were professional and clean throughout. The install took 2 whole days. We had a bit of a hiccup when the furnace wouldn't turn on. It was cold the previous night and the house was cold inside. I called the next morning (a Saturday) and a technician came out within a few hours. He found that one of the pipes (intake or exhaust, not sure) was at an angle that allowed water to pool in it, and the new furnace's sensor sensed that water and wouldn't let it come on. He fixed the pipe and we've been good to go since. I also ordered whole-house duct cleaning and some chimney work as part of the package, since our house was built in 1957 and presumably hadn't ever had cleaning. I found an area of the ductwork I could get to (behind the newly installed humidifier) that I was going to check when the cleaning was done, and it was spotless. The cleaners showed me images that they took of before/after duct cleaning, and it was night and day. That should help w/mitigating air quality problems and allergies. The chimney work went well too; this was another vendor called "Smoke Stacks." They installed a new chimney liner from the gas water heater, and also fixed some issues at the chimney crown and inside near the flue. Generally, I highly recommend Capital. They were consummate professionals from the initial call to the final work. They might be a bit more than some of the other vendors in terms of cost, but I think I got what I paid for. For something like this, you don't want to cut corners.
Description of Work: Installed new furnace, air conditioner, humidifier. Whole-home duct cleaning. Also, sub-contracted to have chimney work done.

Installed a whole house humidifier as an Angie's List deal. Technician was great and did an outstanding job. Mentioned their service contracts but wasn't interested. Got a call a few hours later asking how the install went and then mentioned service contracts again. Agreed to have them come back to perform their yearly furnace maintenance for a discounted price and scheduled for a week later. Service technician came and found a weak blower capacitor. Part was $360. I questioned the high cost as these are online for $5.55 (60x markup) Stated to me that this is cost to carry parts on their trucks. Since I recently broke my ankle and couldn't replace the capacitor myself for a few months, I had to accept the cost. Checked online afterwards and based on comments made on various forums, I see parts price scamming is a way of life for many furnace repair businesses. $360 is at the high end of those reporting capacitor replacement. Most are about $120. It is a shame that businesses feel the need to mark up inexpensive parts to this extreme. It's a scam and I cannot recommend any business that would do this to their customers. I feel they have good technicians who are very courteous and thorough in their jobs, but scamming customers by marking up their replacement parts to this type of extreme is an unacceptable practice that will loose me for an future business with them.
Description of Work: Installed whole house humidifier ($269) came back a week later to perform yearly furnace maintenance ($99).

Thanks for sharing your experience. Capital uses flat rate pricing with no hidden fees or upcharges – all pricing is customer approved prior to any work being done. Included in your repair service is: the actual part, time & labor to install it, plus a full system diagnostic to identify any parts dependent on the capacitor, and a 1 year warranty on the repair. So, if there are any other parts that may cause another capacitor-related failure we proactively address. Additionally, your 1 year repair warranty gives you peace of mind that if anything goes wrong with the capacitor repair within a year, you’re not inconvenienced with another unexpected bill – we’ll repair it again at no charge. We greatly pride ourselves on delivering high quality services, not misleading our customers with bait and switch pricing tactics or simply swapping a broken part, like the scams you read about online. We value your business and take our 100% customer satisfaction very seriously. A member of our team will contact you directly to ensure your satisfaction. Again, thank you for sharing and the opportunity to review.
