Found the problem in 15 minutes. He also checked the capacitor to ensure it worked and was not part of the problem. Did not have Heil fan motor on truck so he called the office so they could find one. Promised to return after he installed a new AC system. What we did not like was there was no communication during the day when he was returning. This was the hottest day in Madison, 94 degrees. Called office at 2pm and they said they found a new fan motor and serviceman would be out to install later that day. Why didn't they call us? Called again at 5pm and the office was closed at 4:30pm. Left a message to call us when he would be back to replace fan motor. Serviceman arrived a little after 5pm and replaced fan motor. Made sure the AC was cooling before he left. The service call cost is high, but we learned is typical. Coupon helped with the cost. The replacement fan motor cost was high but that is not their fault. I would use them again. Don't forget to use the Angie coupon, saved $15.
Description of Work: AC system not working late morning Monday, August 26th. Outside fan motor not running. Service tech arrived on time, 7:30 am on Tuesday. Did his evaluation and determined that fan motor.burned out. Called office and they found universal fan motor. Service tech left to install a central A/C system, said he would be back later to install fan motor. Came back to the house at 5pm Finished by 6pm. Adjusted fan speed to optimize cooling.

Everything went fine. We signed a contract for the maintainace of our heating and cooling units with Harker Heating and Cooling,Inc. Our original contractor was Iron Fireman Management, 78 Enterprise Road S. Suite D, Delafield WI 53018. They installed the heating and cooling units. The cooling unit was not properly installed causing the leak of the coolant for the last year. This was corrected by the Harker Co.
Description of Work: They checked and adjusted furnace and changed the filters. They tested the unit for safe operation. They tested cooling unit and discovered total lack of cooling fluid. They tested the connections with the pipes and discovered that the main pipe connection from the cooling unit to the coils in the basement was not properly placed and tightened. This produced the leak of coolant since the installation ever since the the unit was installed in 2012.

We were told by our previous company we needed an expensive part replaced. After Harker checked it out they found the air conditioner had been disconnected and we chose to pro actively replace a part that was much much less expensive. It has been running great ever since.
Description of Work: Air conditioner and fan were not working. Found another company had somehow disconnected wires to air conditioner! Harker reconnected and also noted a part that we should watch and possibly replace in the future. We chose to replace immediately. They ordered, part came in when promised, at the price expected and was scheduled to be put in right away. Everyone is happy. Especially our tenants. These furnace/air conditioners are rooftop units and are very difficult to get to. Their service people never complained once, which has not been the case with other companies in the past!

Earlier review: I noticed last week that my central air conditioner was blowing strongly but that the air was not cooled. I scheduled a visit from Harker for this morning and the repair man arrived promptly. He quickly diagnosed a lack of freon and, without further discussion, recharged the unit with 5 pounds. My unit is approximately 15 years old, and has a 6-pound capacity. It uses the old R-22 freon for which the price has soared in recent few years (since it is being phased out in favor of an environmentally friendly alternative). I was shocked when the repair man gave me a bill for nearly $600 - $91+tax per pound for the R-22 and $108 diagnostic charge. He also told me that the system likely had a leak and there was a fair chance that the new freon would all be gone within months or even weeks, in which case my best bet would be a new AC (at a cost of $2,500-$3,000). I was surprised in retrospect that he had not taken a few moments to discuss other options before proceeding with such an expensive repair - for example, inspecting for the leak, making a partial rather than a full recharge (to see if it leaks away quickly), or going straight to a new AC system rather than messing around with a fix that might well turn out to be money down the drain. I was also a bit surprised at the price charged for the R-22. A quick web search shows that 30-pound canisters (of R-22, not a substitute) are available for $15-$20 per pound. I am also reading that the price has been going up steeply in the last few months - but this is even more of a reason to have discussed the options with me before proceeding. I would not rule out using Harker again, since many people report positive experiences with them, and I have had good experience in past years when they did checkups on my HVAC system. Everyone slips up now and then. Update 9/28/13: Having investigated further over the past two months, I'm feeling less forgiving than the day I wrote the review above, so I logged in again to lower the grades and update my review. I can still find R-22 by top manufacturers readily available on ebay for $11 per pound - a far cry from the $91+tax that Harker charged me. Moreover I was not even given the choice - service man Randy added the freon without consulting me or informing me of other options (e.g. replacement unit, searching for a leak, or making a partial recharge) - then gave me the shocking bill and the bad news that there was probably a leak. My brother, an electrician in Australia, says that adding R-22 to systems when a leak is suspected is almost a jailing offense there. He agrees that the service I received from Harker was extremely unprofessional.
Description of Work: Diagnosed fault in AC and recharged with 5 pounds of freon.

I have a special needs daughter and needed my air conditioner replaced. I had a leaking condenser, and I had serviced it in the past. They came out the same day, on the hottest day of the year, to replace the air conditioning with no extra charge. They were very prompt and very professional. They ended up being the cheapest estimate by three hundred twenty eight dollars. My daughter was a much happier camper.

This is the second time I've used Harker in 6 months. First time was for electronic issues with the air conditioning. This second time was for a furnace that was turning on only occasionally. As always Harker was professional, on time and very thorough in their service of the equipment and identification of the problem. They identified a dying ignition coil as the reason the furnace was not lighting, replaced the coil and serviced the unit in full. They were able to come out same-day to resolve the issue which was important to us due to a coming baby and needing heat in the cold weather. We called in the morning and a tech arrived that afternoon in the 1.5 hr window specified. While a different technician came out than last time, he was just as polite, thorough and professional. The only issue we had was one issue with the coupon which was very minor. When I called and spoke to the person who answered the phone they indicated that even with their special of the $99 cleaning and service of the furnace, it would still be possible to use the $15 Angie's coupon we had and to simply provide that to the technician. However on the technician's arrival he explained that the $99 special and a lower price on the replacement part prohibited him from using the coupon. The special prices saved us more money than the coupon so we did not use it; however it would've been nice if this had been explained on the phone or if we had been able to use the coupon especially on a $250 simple furnace service and simple part replacement that took less than an hour. That said, Harker is still our preferred HVAC provider due to their accommodation, thoroughness, professionalism, refusal to upsell and honest advice regarding what is needed or not. The coupon issue, while frustrating, is relatively minor in light of these other, hard-to-find attributes.

Thank you for the great review! Sorry for the miss-communication on the coupon. I have reminded our office staff to be more clear on issues like this. We always reserve the best pricing for our Goldstar customers which is why that was a better deal than using the coupon. Thank you for choosing Harker!

The estimate process was a snap, and I felt that he explained things to me well. They were able to get in and do the estimate on a short time frame, and then able to do the work on the following Monday, which was New Years Eve, so I thought that was pretty great. As for the work itself, overall I was very pleased. They did their business, and everything was removed and cleaned up. Took about 7 hours. They guys did a good job explaining things to us. Its been in for 7 days now and everything seems to be running smooth,. If I had any nitpicks, and these are nitpicks, they would be as follows: 1. I wish someone would have explained that the new furnace would have a smell, and how long we should expect that smell to last. 2. I wish they would have taken the time to explain to me the difference between a one and two stage heater when it comes to wiring to the thermostat. Because we were replacing a single stage, the wires going to the thermostat only had a W1 wire, and not the W2 wire (which allows a 2 stage thermostat to control both stages, as opposed to the stages being controlled by the motherboard on the furnace itself). its not a huge deal, as fishing another wire through the walls is probably expensive, but it would have been nice to have this explained to me instead of having to figure it out on the internet. Still, those are relative nitpicks, and none of the other people I got an estimate bothered to mention thermostat wiring either. I'm very happy with our experience overall.
Description of Work: Harker came in and replaced our 28 year old Furnace and A/C unit. The Furnace was replaced with a high efficient two stage, and the A/C was replaced with a 14 seer unit.

They came in for estimates twice since we had so many questions and that was nice of them. They answered questions in detail and were will to accommodate our needs. We needed to know very clearly that we would achieve the goal of getting rid of ducting coming out of the ceiling. After establishing that we were going forward with a plan I did all of the demo on existing finished ceilings myself and Harker said they could just wait for me to let them know it was ready. When it was ready they came in to plan the install and that's when we decided to add the moving of the gas line to the install. The next week they had their parts read and we scheduled the start date of the install. The install went very smoothly. The furnace and the gas had to be off at different times (in the Winter) but they kept it to a minimum. They made sure we had good heat over the weekend even though the return side was not done yet and air flow was not great. For the amount of work the install was pretty quick. The installers asked questions whenever they were not 100% sure about where we wanted new supplies, etc. We appreciated the communication and not making assumptions. They explained how things were going to work in the new system and they pointed out that return ducts that were not being replaced were dirty and that a duct cleaning company could vacuum them out. The work seems to be of a very high quality. Air flow and heat is good. The one problem is the noise of the expanding and contracting ducts. That is mostly due to heat and also when we walk on the floor over the main ducts but sometimes it seems to be airflow related. Its not an excessive amount of noise for a forced air system but our old system was somehow perfectly quiet and we liked it that way. It could have been due to a higher thickness of sheet metal. Maybe the accumulated dust had an impact. I don't remember those ducts being as hot as the new ones to the touch. The project manager did come back out to assess the noise and suggest some options to deal with it but decided the noise caused by heating and cooling is normal. He said we can add some insulation in places we can still access. before we finish it and they can put in a brace if we find a particular section of duct is popping. I do think they should have tried to set the noise expectations at the beginning. The project manager generally responded quickly to emails although I sent reminders once or twice. At the time of planning we did not establish how billing was going to work and I had to ask via email to determine that we would do it through the mail. We did not get an official 2nd estimate although I'm sure we could have if we would have asked.
Description of Work: We initially asked Harker to come in and look at what could be done to improve the heating in a basement bedroom. There was just one supply and no return at all in the basement. They came up with the options of either adding baseboard electric heating or adding new supplies and returns to the existing system. We asked about the secondary goal of moving the main ducts from the middle of the ceiling to the outside wall where they would be out of the way. They described the option of basically redoing the whole HVAC system. That means removing the existing main supplies and returns and installing new ones on the outside wall with a new main supply just for the basement. That also cleans up the whole system since all supplies and returns can go straight down the space between joists instead of coming out of the finished ceiling at points. They gave us estimates of the 3 options at different price levels and described the pros and cons of each. We went with the option of re-doing the whole system and adding the main supply for the basement which means you get zoning with a separate thermostat. When they came in to plan the install we also asked about moving furnace venting and the gas line which was below the ceiling level. They added both items to the install. The new flexible gas line would be installed in the space above the foundation to further clean up the ceiling for later finishing.

Overall, the experience went very well. We’ve used them before to replace an entire-home air conditioning system. Their price is very competitive, and the salesman was very knowledgeable, but not pushy. The technician that they sent out was quick and really explained the system when he was done with the work. He also explained to us how to change the filter and told us to call if we had any problems. We were very pleased with them overall.

I had called them earlier about the book and they said it was ok to wait until we were ready for the tune-up so I didn't have to pay for two separate service calls (rather than take my money twice). The technician was very honest in evaluating what harm the stuck book may or may not cause both now and in the future. In short, the book was a pain to retrieve, but the technician patiently figured out where it was stuck, took that duct work apart, got it out and put things back together again. Our furnace was just fine after the tune-up. However, he only charged me the flat fee for the tune-up, not for the extra labor or parts for cleaning up the wonderful predicament our son created. I double-checked with him when paying the bill and he said he was happy to help and he was just glad to have a happy customer.

Promptness in providing an estimate. Professional and personable sales person. Prompt next week scheduling - this repair took place just prior to an extended heat-wave - can't speak for the period of highest demand. Threw in new thermostat and $50 discount credit - . I think for being in the neighborhood. Completed work as scheduled. Installer was a little less than professional, offering that he hoped he didn't get any other jobs for that day so he could quit early, and that he hoped to retire as early as he could. The air conditioner has been working great all through the triple digit heat, and I can tell a difference in my electric bills from my 25 year old unit. Cost was comparable to other estimates. I chose this provider based on personal recommendation of a friend, and the fact that they installed Trane brand. My previous unit was a Trane and seldom needed service except for maintenance.
