Harker Heating & Cooling

Harker (specifically Randy L.) saved the day for me and my family, treating me as a valued customer regardless of the time of day and issue. I called Harker at 1am on a Saturday evening - during a rash of 100 degree + days, followed by 90+ days, our air conditioning failed. I had hoped to wait until the week to call (with the house cooling at night), but the heat would not let up and the house was over 90 degrees still in the middle of the night. I will admit I called approximately 10 other companies that offer emergency "24/7" service first (per the ads and web sites) - I have Bryant equipment, and due to the motor issues, the best chance of a tech having a motor was if they worked with Bryant. However, I either was blown off and told "Yes, we offer emergency, but we aren't willing to help you tonight" (Four Seasons Cooling), or calls were not even returned until well into the next day despite paging/speaking with answering services/following each companies after hours instructions, most more than once (Clark Heating & Cooling, Action Plumbing Heating A/C Electric, Dale's Heating & A/C, and Tarkenton Brothers). Finally, I looked for a highly reviewed company independent of whether they were a preferred Bryant servicer, and very quickly identified Harker. I spoke to answering service, and Randy quickly called me back. Despite me having just woken him up, he was kind, and immediately started going through options on the phone, trying to ID the issue to identify if I could fix the problem myself. Once we determined I could not, ensuring if they came out they would have necessary parts on their truck. Within an hour Randy from Harker was onsite. Once at our home, Randy was able to quickly identify a number of ssues - a short in the circuit between the furnace/blower/evaporator/condenser, tiny fuses positioned so I could not ID them that had blown, a bad electrical connector, and a few minor issues, caused by the heavy work and age of the unit. Despite the numerous potential causes and numerous issues identified, Randy quickly identified the parts and repaired everything within an hour. He answered all my questions, and showed me areas to check I was unaware of in case I have in the future. He also kept value in mind, knowing I was paying an after-hours fee, and advised me about what services were critical, and what I should wait on to save $$$ as they were not critical to make the unit function - but he always left the decision to me after explaining the pros/cons. This is my only complaint and the reason for the "B" in price - this was not Randy's fault by any means and was an issue of company policy - Randy was onsite at a double-rate. I find it ridiculous the company won't let him either install an air filter or sell me one and let me install it unless we pay double what we would pay if we just came to their office, especially when they're already on-site. Their policy, while ridiculous and not in-line with what we might expect, is unfortunately a relatively good policy compared to the industry as a whole. If they resolved this, I would use them every time and provide A's across the board - I just have issues with revenue generating policies that simply take advantage uninformed customers who may now know the base cost of an item- doubling the cost without reason is a pet peeve. That said, overall Harker and Randy were excellent. Randy even honored a coupon from Angie's list despite the after-hours nature. As I said above, he was kind, punctual, accurate in timeliness, didn't try to sell any more than I needed, took time to explain everything, and saved us at 1am on a Saturday. If we had made it to Sunday morning and still didn't have A/C, I may not have survived the wrath of my pregnant spouse. On top of everything else, once I told Randy the situation on the phone, he was careful the entire time he was at our home to be very quiet and careful. My wife and kids never knew anyone was here - she only woke up from the relief when the A/C first turned on. In short, despite my one caveat above about a bad policy (that is not unique to Harker, and is better than many other in the industry), I would highly recommend Harker, especially for emergencies. Our old air conditioner collapsed on us the week of the over 100 degrees heat. Their rep came promptly and determined that our current air conditioner could not be fixed. Because one of us is quite ill and the heat was unbearable, we left to find an air-conditioned place to stay. The next day, after a second evaluation (this was an expensive purchase), they called promptly, explained the situation with clarity, and moved quickly to install a major new split level unit. These were extraordinary circumstances, the heat was unprecedented, and we were especially vulnerable physically. And then we found that a simple repair wouldn't work, that they had to find us a new split level system, and in a big hurry. So they found it, they assured us verbally that it would be installed within 24 hours, and they did it. The crew did a terrific job, working in our house that had become chaotic from illness, a yard in which you couldn't tell flowers from weeds, and a situation where the back of the house (where they needed to be) is virtually inaccessible. They did a fine job of installation, and left things tidy and the air conditioner running on low, so the house was cool when we got back home ? which was exceptionally thoughtful. We were in crisis, and they acted immediately to fix that. We are very grateful.

I've used Harker twice, happy both times. Today, at the tail end of a huge heat wave that had A/C repair people and parts in high demand, they managed to get out to our house and get our A/C fixed quickly. The repair tech called me to let me know he was at my house, and by the time I got there to meet him he had the unit back up and running.

They were very good. They were thorough and efficient. They cleaned up well after themselves and their workers were courteous and efficient.

They are just very good. They were recommended by a neighbor and they were very prompt. Our air conditioner came out over the 4th of July weekend and it was blistering hot. We had to pay holiday rates but, hey, they were available, it was an actual person that I talked to and they came. They made an assessment and we had the whole air conditioner replaced. They did a very good job. They are very good and they are average in price. I can't complain; their price is no worse than anybody else.

They were very prompt. They gave me a very detailed quote and completed the work at the right time.

They are extremely knowledgeable about all kinds of furnaces. They come on time and everything is done very professionally. i like that they explained exactly how my furnace works.

I was under the impression that I should be getting 24v, which is what the thermostat needed. The technician informed me that the voltage was correct and that the 24v that I was expecting was incorrect. Turns out the system was working correctly but the technician was able to get the 24v to the thermostat by connecting another wire, already available, to the "common" terminal of the thermostat control panel on the furnace and then hooking it up to my thermostat and all was fixed.

The installation went well. The installers covered the carpet and cleaned up after themselves as well as hauled the old pieces away.

My furnace died the day before Thanksgiving in 2006. Harker and 3 others provided bids on Friday after Thanksgiving. The Harker sales rep was the most professional; offered the most options honestly and included the pros and cons of each option. He talked about why they sell the brands that the sell without talking bad about the others. They arrived on time the Monday after Thanksgiving as promised and completed the job professionally, explaining what they were doing and why. Harker sends me reminders of service and routine maintenance timely and has always been on time. Everyone with whom I've had contact with Harker is courteous and professional. I definitely would recommend them to anyone needing this service.

They were very prompt and did excellent work. They have great pricing.

Great. The installers were on time (early in fact) and conducted the install efficiently and professionally. We discussed a few details about the logistics and I/O locations for the ERV and then they proceeded with the installation. The time to complete the job was estimated at 7-8 hours and ended up taking only 4-5. Overall it was a very positive experience!

This was a Groupon deal. The guy who did the work was knowledgeable and professional, and we have confidence in the work. I was concerned that with such an old furnace, there was going to be a lot that needed to be done. It is refreshing to be told that everything looks fine. Given the age of our furnace, a less scrupulous company really could have sold us a lot of "needed" service. I'm glad to have found an honest company - it's a great way to build a good relationship with current and potential customers. Highly recommended.

I was very happy with them. It was a significant amount of money but I had talked to a few companies and it seemed that they were the way to go.

We had our furnace and humidifier serviced including replacement of the humidifier water panel. About six weeks later, soon after the humiidifier was turned on we discovered water under the carpet in our family room. After finally tracing the problem back to the furnace area, we had Harker return to fix the problem. They identified the water as coming from a clogged humidifier drainage hose. As we have never had this problem previously, we figured it had stemmed from either poor flushing of the hose, its being reattached improperly, or something else related to the humidifier servicing. Harker has refused to take responsibility for the carpet damage or help contribute to its replacement. We would certainly discourage anyone from using Harker as they do not appear to stand by their service. It is unfortunate that the provider responded without ever visiting the site and getting his facts correct. Mike did note that there was a leak from the solenoid, but neglected to report that he said it was a minor issue that did not have to be dealt with now. In addition, the serviceman who did correct the problem was able to trace the leak that caused the problem back to the drainage hose, and we saw the water trail. The response also failed to mention that the current area of carpet damage is not physically near where the solenoid had leaked (which was dry when this issue was noted). The provider's response still appears to be avoiding taking responsibility for a job not well done.

They charged us about $6000 for their services. They had been recommended by a friend of ours. We would definitely use their services in the future too.

The last service was a little over $200. We had them out earlier in the summer to fix our zone system for heating. I went to Angie’s List and looked over some of the things. They seemed to have a good rating. I had a furnace installed a couple of years ago and I wasn’t particularly happy with the service that I had from another company. So, I wanted to try a new one. I need to have Harker Heating & Cooling come back out since the Aprilaire system doesn’t seem to be working well. I don’t know if it’s their fault. The filter that they replaced seems to be spilling water on the basement floor. They were punctual and came on the day they said they would come. I would probably use them again.

I used a Groupon to have Harker check my heater. I was worried that they were going to use the Groupon service call as an opportunity to tell me I needed additional work at additional cost. But they came in, checked the system, fixed a small issue, educated me a bit, and were on their way. Very professional. I will use them again.

We have used them quite a bit and they have been a very good company for us. They are a very good company and we found them to be very reliable, efficient and useful. We have had no problems with the systems. We had them come when we had a problem and the emergency service was fantastic. It was immediate and they did a very good job. They are there when you need them. There is a service fee for them to come out and it depends on how much equipment you have and what kind of equipment and stuff like that. They are a very professional company and they do a very good job. We had done a comparison of prices when we installed the system and they were quite good but I have never done any comparison shopping on the maintenance cost. They don't usually offer you very enticing deals and I don't think they feel that they have to. They have a very solid customer base and they provide a very good service and people go back to them because they have done a good job and they know that it is going to be done right. Their punctuality is always very good. The technicians that come out have always been very competent.

It was after hours when our furnace went out and I felt like they were prompt in coming out but I did not feel like there was wonderful communication as to what was exactly wrong with the furnace. However, the furnace works fine since they worked on it. I possibly may use them again in the future.

We called two local HVAC companies (Bethke & Harker) and received estimates for the replacement of 20+ year old central air conditioning and forced-air natural gas furnace from each. After doing some research online, we chose Harker because of their very competitive price, choice of equipment (Carrier), and good reputation. We also chose a new programmable thermostat and an Aprilaire filter system. Installation was scheduled within 5 business days of accepting the estimate. Two technicians arrived 5 minutes before the scheduled installation time of 8am. After showing them the location of the existing equipment, they quickly went to work removing the existing central air compressor outside and the furnace in the basement. Installation progressed through the rest of the morning and into the early afternoon, their only break being for lunch. When the installation was complete, they thoroughly cleaned the area surrounding the furnace and removed all cartons and other packaging. A technician explained the operation of the new thermostat and filter system before they left. Follow-up customer service was excellent, with a phone call the following Monday after installation and all the proper forms and copies of receipts for rebate submissions. My overall experience with Harker was excellent. The new furnace and air conditioner work great and save me money every year. I would definitely recommend Harker and will rely on their service for my future needs.

HARKER HEATING & COOLING Harker Heating & Cooling, did some repairs first, then ended up and had to replaced if a week later. It was a defective unit. A heat wave was coming and I was very disappointed that I paid to repair it then had to replace it. He did accommodate us and came back at 7am the next day after we found out it was defective, to replace it before the heat wave hit us. The worker did the work all by himself. He was very polite, very pleasant, did the work quietly, and cleaned up afterwards. You would have never known he was there.

I am very happy with them and they are high in energy. I liked their recommendations and they did beat other quotations I had. I liked their services and will use the same in future.

Our air conditioning system (Luxaire ) broke down on a very hot day with company expected the next day. We called at 1:00 in the afternoon and they told us someone would come that day. The repair person arrived at about 3:00 and worked for a while and determined he didn't have the right part with him. He said he'd go back to the shop and then stop by on his way home to finish the repair. He did and we had air conditioning by dinner time. The repair was $430, which is expensive, but most of it was the cost of the part. Great find! Thanks, Angie's List.
