Hank did very good work. He arrived on time, and worked efficiently. I appreciated that as he went along and had questions about how I wanted things done, he asked, instead of assuming what I wanted. Hank does quality work and is a nice guy too, which makes it all that much easier to have him in your house doing work. I would definitely hire him again.

He was timely, friendly, and honest. Turns out the design we wished to pursue was not his forte, and he was very forthright. We appreciated his honest response, and would totally recommend him and consider him for future projects should they arise.

Hank was prompt in returning my call and in showing up for an estimate and to do the work. I researched what needed to be done and discussed with some knowledgeable friends and admittedly had a higher expectation of what would be done that what was actually done - i.e. replace longer section of fascia rather than just cut out the rotted piece from joist to joist. Despite that, I have no complaints about the work that was done and the price was fair.

Hank offered to get started right away so we put him to work. He completed the sconces quickly, and then fixed the front door as we discussed as a 'patch' job to get us through to Spring. The quality of work looks great, and he stressed that if we were not pleased or had issues then we should call him right away so that he would come back and make it right.
Description of Work: Hank assessed the issues we were having with exterior light sconces (pulling away from the siding) and our front door. He then provided a frank evaluation of the issues and causes - and what to do about them.

Hank arrived promptly at 8:00 the next morning to assess the problem and agreed that an additional down spout should be the first step. He was available to begin the work within a few days. He again arrived promptly on the agreed morning at 7:30am and installed the new down spout, chipped out cracked mortar, tuck-pointed new mortar and bushed on sealer on the lower stone walls near the down spout. He also chipped out mortar near the stairs and poured concrete as needed and sealed the area between the stairs and the house. The project was completed in one day, and everything was done as agreed. I could see that Hank is meticulous in his work when I inspected the repair work on the stairs. He is also very pleasant and courteous. I appreciated the fact that he didn't push to repair the garage walls immediately but recommended waiting for at least a few months so that I could see if any heavy rains resulted in water in the garage again. I cannot recommend Hank highly enough and will not hesitate to have him complete the repairs to the garage walls and for any other general carpentry or repairs needed.
Description of Work: Earlier in the summer after a heavy rain, I noticed water on my garage floor. Further investigation revealed that the likely source of the problem was inability of the gutter to handle heavy rains where the attached garage meets the house and that paneling installed by a previous owner had concealed damage to the lower garage walls. It was obvious that this problem had existed for many years. I wanted an additional down spout installed and also wanted some mortar work done on the other side of the house between the stairs and the house. I contacted Hank one evening to explain the problem, and he agreed to come out the very next morning.

I called Mr Stern on a Monday for an estimate. He was able to come out later that same day which was wonderful. The next morning he came and reattached the post. I was so pleased to have this done! At that time I asked him for an estimate on another project, which he has since completed as well. That project was to re-hang the railing in the basement stairwell. Very pleased with his experience and timely communication. I will definitely be contacting him for future needs.

Mr. Stern listened to my concerns and tried to adapt his ideas to my vision. Although the end product was bulkier and harder to maneuver than I had hoped, his congenial nature, positive attitude, and friend nature made it a positive experience.

I had an idea for what I wanted in my living room and got a number of quotes. Hank's quote was not the cheapest. In fact, I think it was the most expensive. Still, I chose him because he told me what would work and what wouldn't work. He also clearly seemed to be a craftsman, not just a handyman who does some carpentry. He offered suggestions and solutions that didn't compromise my vision for my room, but which were more practical from a building/use standpoint.
Description of Work: Hank built a floor-to-ceiling built-in book shelf with lower cabinets to my design specifications. He offered his opinion on the design when he thought what I wanted was impractical. In that instance, he suggested a fine alternative. I would highly recommend him.

We just bought an 1853 farm house and soon discovered what we thought was a broken floor joist in our upper floor. I found Hank on Angie's List, gave him a call, and he came out right then to look at it. After looking at the ceiling and the floor above, he advised that we'd probably need to open up the entire ceiling and gave me a rough quote. We arranged to start work in two days after we moved everything out of the room. We started work on a Saturday to allow my husband and I to pitch in with the ceiling demolition. Hank showed us how it's done, and also handled clean up of the edges where lath had broken off badly. My husband helped with the actual demo and assisted me with the cleanup. We had the whole ceiling down and cleaned up in time for lunch. Hank went and got some wood and jacks, we jacked up the ceiling, and then we called it a day. Hank came back Monday and Tuesday to work on sistering the joists, fixing the previous "repairs" that had been done, and putting in new bridging. He also came back Wednesday morning for just an hour to fix up one last spot that had a badly supported patch in the floor. Overall, Hank did a really nice job, especially with the two difficult spots where the joists were pieced together with odd bits of wood. That room now has the most solid floor in the entire upstairs. The plasterer we got in to replace the ceiling also mentioned that he'd done a nice job. We really appreciated him letting us do a lot of the unskilled work to save some money. The project did cost more than I would have liked, but we also got a very experienced carpenter who knew exactly what he was doing and had no problem working with the issues inherent to a house that age.
Description of Work: Assist with demolition of plaster and wood lath ceiling, sister all floor joists as needed, and fix problem floor joist "repairs".

Mr. Stern did a nice job; he's honest, careful and precise.
Description of Work: Service requested by me was for addl handrails to be placed in basement stairway and our upper hall stairway leading to/from living room to bedrooms on 2nd floor. This would have been needed when my husband was discharged from hospital. Mr. Stern measured, and I agreed I would call him when I wanted to go ahead with the work. In addition, Mr. Stern cleaned up work left undone by a prior contractor who left things unfinished in our basement rec room.

Hank came over and gave an estimate and then arrived right on time to get the work done. One door was sticking a few days later and he came over immediately and fixed it. We used him again to install a back door and storm door. He is very friendly and does it right the first time. He has real pride in his work.
Description of Work: Installed 8 interior doors plus two double closets. Put all trim on. Hank is excellent and very thorough. When he says he will be there expect him to be right on time. He also installed a back door and storm door. All fit perfectly.

I called and left a message early in the morning. He returned the call about 4:30 and was here by 6:00 to measure for a proposal to remove the old porch and replace it with all new materials. Due to a difference of opinion the situation went down hill from there.
Description of Work: Mr. Stern responded quickly (within hours) to my request for a bid on replacing the back porch. However, it would be wise for any anyone wanting a job to refrain from stating his/her political viewpoints.

My husband agreed to help by supporting the structure while some of the work was being done. If he would not have assisted, the job could have costed at least half as much more for an assistant to Mr. Stein. We were happy with the end product.
Description of Work: Our house was built in 1921. It needs some work. A small back porch outside a second floor door was beginning to pull away from the house. We weren't sure whether it needed to be taken down or could be repaired. Mr. Stein replaced some rotting wood, replaced the main structure beams, and was able to secure the porch strongly with some heavy duty hardware. The work done was clean and attractive.

Hank is awesome! We called because our front wooden stairs, the primary entry way to our home, were falling apart and becoming unsafe. Hank came out the same day that we called. Because it is early December and we are heading into the snowy season, Hank recommended repairing the stairs for the winter with a complete rebuild in the spring. He quickly repaired our stairs. Hank was very professional. We will definitely be callin on Hank to rebuild our stairs in the spring.

He came out and looked over the deck and talked to us for about 30-45 mins. He was polite and informative about the changes that he would make to build a new deck. The old one was spongy and poorly supported. He also noted the new siding on the house and new windows. His quote for a treated, wood deck was $7200. The contractor we went with charged us $4097. Quite a difference.

First, Hank came over to listen to my request, look at a picture, look at the site, and take measurements. Some of the things I wanted wouldn't quite work, so he suggested alternatives. I'm talking about the types of things a non-carpenter wouldn't even consider, but that would make a difference in construction process. I got the feeling that Hank was a real craftsman who was concerned with turning out a beautiful product and wasn't simply interested in getting the job done. About a week later, he sent me an estimate. I accepted and he began practically the next day. Over the course of a couple of weeks, he worked in my home and garage, fabricating almost everything on site. Hank was meticulous when it came to building the wall unit. All along the way, when I had questions and concerns, he immediately assuaged my fears. I wanted my crown molding to go around the top and base molding to go around the bottom. He even put trim between the shelves and the cabinets. I'm absolutely delighted with my shelves which genuinely look like a piece of built-in furniture from the home's inception.
Description of Work: Using a design I liked, Hank constructed a built-in bookshelf that goes from floor to ceiling and includes cabinets on the lower level. There are three cabinets with hidden hinges and three shelving sections above the cabinets with adjustable shelves. I asked that he make it look like it has always been there. Mission accomplished...it looks fantastic.
