Jesse Dorshak is the person who responded to my inquiry, and he did respond in a prompt fashion. However, this consisted of calling me from my driveway, saying he was there and ready to take a look at the trees--no advance notice, no appointment, just showed up unannounced. I asked first about the horse chestnut and explained my concerns. His reply was "well, do you just have money you want to throw around? B/c I can spend it for you." I was somewhat taken aback but said no, I did not want to spend money needlessly, but did he think the tree was compromised and could come down? Again, I got a non-reply--"Well, it might stand for another 15 years and it might come down tonight." OK. Thanks very much, not too helpful OR polite. At this point, I should have thanked him for his time and said goodbye, but I didn't, so I am taking my share of the responsibility for all that comes next. We moved on to a box elder w/storm damage. I was informed that "it's not going to hurt anything unless you're standing under it when it falls!" Then to the cedar tree which I was concerned about possibly coming down also, and I received much the same answer as I did about the horse chestnut. (Note: I have many large, old trees, several of which have come down, totally or in large part, in the past several years, so these concerns of mine were not unfounded or unreasonable--and even if they were, they could have been addressed politely rather than borderline rudely.) The last tree was the ash, rubbing my roof. This he agreed was a cause for concern and should be trimmed. I told him that all I needed was to have the branches removed from the trees and left on the ground--I did not need it cut up, chipped or hauled away. He quoted me $175 to do the work on the box elder and the ash. I had misgivings, but it seemed a reasonable price and I decided I could have him do that work, but I would still pursue other quotes on the other 2 trees. He told me he'd have his crew over to my house in the next several days. On Saturday afternoon, when I was out of town, I noticed a message on my phone. It was him calling to say the crew was at my house and "was going to start work, OK?" I tried to call him back but the phone rang and rang, no voice mail or anything. He had NOT given me a specific date, let alone time, that the crew would come, and so I was NOT expecting them!! I would certainly expect to be told what day the work would be performed! When I got home, I was very unhappy w/what I found. The storm damage from the box elder had been partially removed, but so had a large branch from the cedar tree out front! This was never discussed with or approved by me. Had the crew given it any thought, or had I been there to suggest it, they could have approached that tree from a different side and not had to unnecessarily damage the cedar tree. There was still significant storm-damaged dead wood hanging in the box elder--the job done was not complete, by any means. In addition, there are ruts or depressions an inch or two deep all the way from the road to the tree where they apparently drove their work vehicle. This could have been easily avoided by something as simple as laying down sheets of plywood to drive on; however, this was not done. When I checked the ash tree, they did indeed cut it back from my roof, so that at least was accomplished more or less as expected w/no collateral damage that I could see. After seeing all this, I reviewed the contract on the back of the proposal. Perhaps this is standard, but it pretty much relieves them of responsibility for ANYTHING that they damage on your (or even your neighbor's) property. It also states that the proposal need not be signed (which mine was not, but I did in all honesty give verbal permission) in order for them to do the proposed work, so presumably the act of coming out to give you an estimate then allows them to perform the work and bill you regardless of your wishes. And yes, it also states that they will show up "unannounced" (the exact wording of the contract) unless you make other arrangements w/the office. On the one hand, all this is stated in the contract, so it's my fault for not reading it through right away, but on the other hand, it seems to me that a reputable company would point this out to a prospective client, since I think the normal expectation would be that you'd be given some sort of heads-up as to when to expect the crew... All in all, I am VERY glad that I didn't agree to have this company do any more work than this. As I said, I have to bear my share of the responsibility for going ahead and allowing someone to do this work when I had misgivings about them as well as for not reading the contract on the back of the proposal thoroughly after receiving it. However, I feel strongly that I did NOT receive a good value, that communication was far less than optimal, that the work was not completed in a satisfactory fashion, and that care was not taken to avoid unnecessary damage to my property. I would never again use or recommend this company.
Description of Work: I asked for an estimate/info about work on a horse chestnut and cedar tree that I feared were hollow or partly so and might need to come down. I also asked for an estimate/info on removing storm damage from a box elder and trimming an ash tree back so it didn't touch my roof.

It went well overall. I was just concerned about how the billing happened. I asked him to send me a bill divided up between the work done from my property and done by my neighbor’s property because that’s what my insurance company did. He actually sent a bill to my neighbor and a bill to me but I cleared it up but it took 2 or 3 days to get it cleared up.

The good: price wise they were very competitive and beat many other services. very quick to get quote, came out the same day I emailed them the tree trimming itself was very well done. The trees look totally different in a good way. Cleanup, they yard after had very few signs that they were there The not so good: In the front yard, left very large tire tracks on the lawn that will only be fixed by digging up the area. There is also a spot of dead grass where the truck was parked. Scheduling doesn't seem very organized. When I called I said I wanted treatment for the birch tree. I asked to schedule when they would come out and I was told they would let me know. That was weeks ago and no word. I asked again when the tree trimming was being done and was told they were behind and would probably be out "in the next week or so". That was a week and a half ago. It's clear I will have to call them again to find out when they are coming. Seriously thinking about calling and telling them not to do it and I'll hire someone else for that piece.
Description of Work: Trimmed two trees, one large maple and a birch tree. Both were very overdue in needing trimming. Also, they are supposed to treat the birch tree for disease.

The gentleman from Dorshak seemed very knowledgeable and sincere about wanting to provide me the best service possible. He had a lot of a recommendations. A lot of recommendations. Some which were really expensive. It may not be the case, but I felt like he was just trying to up-sell everything so I ended up doing nothing. I had $100 credit because of the deal but I didn't cash it in because I couldn't tell which were a priority. I had other tree specialists come out and they seemed to be a little more clear about what was absolutely necessary versus nice-to-haves.

In mid-October 2015 we got a quote from Dorshak to cut down two large walnut trees in our yard, one in the front yard and one in the back yard. The quote included a separate line item to grind down the stumps. Once we approved the work, it was like pulling teeth to get anything accomplished. Every couple weeks we would call to ask when the work would be started. We were always given a general response ("next week or two") or told a date that never materialized. Finally, after several calls like this, it appeared at the end of January 2016 that they were actually going to come out and do the work. At 8:30 pm the night before the scheduled start date, we received a call from an employee asking if we could go ask our neighbors for permission for Dorshak to roll a lift across their yard to access our back yard. I acknowledge that the tree in our back yard is in an awkward spot that is difficult to access, but for $3800 I expected that I would not need to be the one figuring out how to get access a day or two before cutting was to start. The trees were cut down safely and cleanly. The employees that actually did the removal were very nice and professional. It is now March 1, and the stumps have yet to be ground out. We call Dorshak at least once a week, and continue to get assurances about when the grinding will be completed, but they never follow through.

-We genuinely thank you for taking the time to post your review. We are sometimes humbled by an occasional review of this caliber. Though of course disappointing in nature, we do place a very high level of importance on our Customers' satisfaction and subsequent feedback. It insures we take the time to review our ongoing processes and duly take inventory of all the hard work that goes into every aspect of our business. As you know, we are often times subjected to unpredictable, harsh, and even extreme weather scenarios beyond our control. Given that, we do the best we can when scheduling work with consideration to the elements. Nonetheless, we are committed to a culture of mutual learning laced with a dedication to excellence, and will always apply each new lesson as an opportunity to grow as individuals as well as an organization. Since the time of your posting, we've completed the Stump Grinding application and gained your verbal approval with consideration given to the inconvenience we caused. On behalf of Dorshak Family Tree Service, thank you once again as we appreciated the opportunity to serve you and yours! Enjoy a spectacular summer season...

Dorshak Family Tree Service did an unbelievable job today. They came out quicker than anyone else would, in fact 2 days before their own eta, and did a superb job. Myron Dorshak and his crew, niece and nephew, was especially helpful, polite and did the job very quickly. They left a clean surface when they were done. Myron even looked at my chainsaw for me when it wasn't working. I would recommend Dorshak to anyone.

They provide an outstanding service and they are a really good company. We have used the company for about 4-5 years. There was a misunderstanding between the company and Angie’s List however regarding the pricing for the deal. They had pulled the deal 24 hours after posting it because they could not honor the deal price. We ended up working out something ourselves with the company. We had them do major trimming on a large oak tree in the front yard. They did their best to live up to the deal. I hold no one responsible for the miscommunication and was happy we still got the service. I was out of town for the service but they did a great job with the cleanup. They took great care to not damage the lawn. They were flexible with scheduling and suggested a time where it would be best for the tree. I intend to use them again.

I've used Dorshak Family Tree Service a few times, and have always been very satisfied with their work and professionalism. They show up on time, are courteous and keep me informed. They take appropriate safety precautions, and are careful to clean up after the job is done. This particular job was a challenge because the large locust tree was located in a spot that was not accessible by truck, so the workers had to climb it in order to get the process started. It was pretty amazing to watch the lumberjack skill required. Of course, the difficult nature of the tree removal was a factor in the price, but their quote was still within the acceptable range of the estimates I received. (Tree trimming is a pricey proposition in my opinion, so I usually find myself putting it off until the situation is a little bit out of control . . . which drives the cost up. Oh, well, my issue, not theirs!) I recommend Dorshak Family Tree Service without hesitation, and will definitely use them again!

I purchased deal for 3 hours of labor for tree service. The deal clearly states 1 person for 3 hours or 2 people for 1 1/2 hours.
