Eric is a professional. Came on time, had great ideas, was thorough and to the point, and delivered a plan after our meeting when he said he would. I didn't get the feeling he was trying to sell me on more services, but rather that he was honestly trying to give me the most for my money. I'd be inclined to continue working with him because of this experience.

Eric was great, he helped us with some design considerations for our deck expansion project, things to look out for, and actually referred us to a Structural Engineer to do the drawings we will need for permitting. Definitely worth the consultation as he pointed us in the right direction to get our project moving forward.

Eric Gedney was punctual, friendly and well-prepared. He had already done research on specifics like local lot set-back requirements so we were ready to get down to the "meat" of the discussion. Eric was attentive to drawing out our actual needs and wants. We walked about the house discussing a number of creative options, with their upsides and downsides. We honed down to what became Eric's recommendation, which we will implement. Some may ask why hire an architect to think about something as mundane as a garage? Well, we felt we needed a professional unbiased opinion about where and how to approach the project. Eric Gedney is a consummate professional that gave us excellent guidance as well as a bit of education. He exceeded our expectations!
Description of Work: We engaged Eric for advice about adding a new garage space to our house. Our concerns were not only where and how, but the possible effect on resale value. We discussed different options and relative costs, and Eric made a recommendation based on our needs and budget. We now have a plan.

We spent about an hour talking about different ideas. I wanted to create a long term plan for the house, doing renovations in order of efficiency. He gave me ideas that I had not thought of. We decided on where we should start and then he took measurements and drew a quick plan for the changes. He will now provide a professional plan that I can use with with contractors to get quotes. He is also available for project management. We agreed a time by when the plan would be completed. He is also able to give me referrals to contractors.

As snowbirds, we did not want to maintain two homes so our daughter offered us the lower level of their split level home to live in. Eric came to the house and immediate could see great potential there. He designed an apartment with a separate entry, kitchenette, half bath and bedroom. It is perfect! He is very experienced, professional and met all of our expectations. Thank you so much Eric!

My wife felt it went went well. The service was to give us an idea of cost and feasibility of a four season room addition. For us this was out of budget but what was in budget was a back porch which we might be able to convert to a four season room at a later date. As part of the deal, eric had his assistant do a conceptual drawing of a proposed back porch. Contact was easy but we did have to wait for his schedule to clear up. This took about a month but we weren't in a hurry.

This was an outstanding experience for us. Do to special needs we were looking at adding a bedroom addition to the lower level of our home and had no way of knowing the costs. Eric contacted me by phone first to get an idea of what we were looking to do. When he came on site he had a tremendous amount of insight and ideas we had not considered. He spent some time taking measurements and later provided us with a drawing of his ideas and a document from an industry recognized provider of what the typical costs might be for changes we were looking to make.

Mr. Gedney was very easy to work with. He was prompt and professional . He performed exaxctly the service described. I am very pleased with the result . It would have been a great value even without the discount. I would definitely recommend Mr. Getney to anyone needing residential architectural services.
Description of Work: Mr. Gedney came to my home to assess the reasonable possibilities to convert part of the lower floor to a MIL/ apartment. He spent close to two hours looking at the space, talking to me, and measuring . Two weeks later I received a PDF architectural plan, suitable to take to a contractor to begin work on the project .

Eric offered many suggestions about possible renovations to our home, and about a week later we received a drawing of a suggested renovation to our kitchen that involved walling in an existing open porch on the rear of our kitchen to expand the kitchen square footage. We will not be doing that this year due to our budget, but will pass on the plans to whoever moves into the home in the future.
Description of Work: We had Eric determine if we could cut away part of a wall between our dining room and kitchen. We were concerned it might be load bearing. He was very familiar with the construction of our Craftsman style home, and assured us that it could be removed easily. He and his assistant also measured our existing kitchen.

We originally purchased a Big Deal for Eric to evaluate our major remodel plans, and then went ahead and worked with him to get plans to move forward with our remodel. He did a good job listening to our wants and needs, and adjusting to our feedback. In addition to our ideas, he provided some good ideas that hadn't occurred to us, which improved the end result greatly, like turning our staircase to improve the flow of the kitchen remodel. We moved several walls and changed the layout of our spaces, and it feels much more functional and logical now. We actually just contacted him to use his services again.

I bought the coupon for 3.5 hours of consultation service to get ideas of expanding the front entry / porch area. We didn't know what we wanted except to make it "better". This was also the first time we would be doing something structural to the house. Eric and Jocelyn arrived right on time as scheduled and promptly addressed our goals. They listened to what we wanted and answered all our questions. Eric is obviously very good at what he does because he came up with sketches right on the spot, he then explained the process of continuing on with the project. I got a detailed drawing in a week, which is something we could use should we decide to move forward. Our initial phone call was about 15 min and the meeting was about an hour. With the detailed plan I definitely we got what we wanted from the coupon. I highly recommend Eric and Jocelyn, and would not hesitate to use him again in the future.

The initial meeting was pleasant and engaging. The architect (and his assistant) were responsive and professional in every way. They were careful to explore our goals in detail. However in follow-up the team seemed uninterested in working with us or seriously considering possible alternate remodel plans. They submitted a singe quick sketch which seemed fairly perfunctory, and at best derivative of earlier work - though less appealing. I initially proposed a $100,000 remodel budget - which was twice what it cost me previously to gut my downstairs and greatly improve it's function and value to our family. The architect indicated that basically nothing significant could be done for that price. I indicated I could go up to 170K or perhaps a bit higher if needed - I just didn't want to significantly exceed the value of our existing house (a 200K house on much more valuable land). Again, the architect indicated that there were no worthwhile improvements warranted within this budget. I'm sure the architect thought that he was doing us a favor by recommending that we plow any proposed remodel money into purchasing a new house rather than wasting money trying to upgrade this one. Given that a move would cost a minimum of 50K even if we did not upgrade to a nicer house I respectfully disagree. To his credit he did suggest that if we were going to spend money without moving that we could get the highest return by upgrading our kitchen. I guess spending 300 bucks to have a talented pro come in and recommend that the greatest return on investment could be realized by upgrading an outdated kitchen might be a useful expense for some, though any $2 home improvement magazine will provide the same advice. Clearly from his portfolio this is a very talented architect. The fee for consulting with such a talented professional was tiny - it was however also a total waste of money and more importantly time. After our initial meeting it never seemed to me that serious creative effort was made to craft solutions in reaction to our discussions. It was if I was setting aside time and paying a fee in order for him to decide if he wanted to take on our project. I guess we didn't make the cut. Overall I kind of felt like a chevy buyer walking onto a Mercedes lot, though actually I could easily spend Lambo money if I thought it was worth it. I am going to be proceeding with a remodel based on consultation with another architect. The changes may not make our home a candidate for Architectural Digest, but will I believe make it more pleasant for our family and significantly improve its resale value. I suspect this is a really talented architect who would be a great fit for the right client. Clearly we were not that client.
Description of Work: Provider met at our home with assistant and discussed our goals for remodel. Provider took previous architect sketches for evaluation/inspirtation. The sketches were returned after he recommended we not move forward with revisions to the home.

Sprinkled throughout this "D" graded review are quite a number of compliments. For those I am thankful. The core of the issue seems to be the lack of inspiration that we gave this couple in our sketches and recommendations. This situation that this couple is in is the toughest for me to handle professionally and personally. A primary tenet of mine for these consultations is to give an unbiased review, solid recommendations and no further obligation. Over the course of four years and 300+ consultations, there have been maybe twenty homes where the combination of location, condition, structure and budget honestly say that moving is a better option. This was one of them. I very often bring up the subject of the "make me move" price - that is, at what point does it make more sense to move than to remodel? That does not mean that after further thinking and research that a solution cannot be reached, it simply means that further thinking and review are prudent in my opinion. Further complicating things is a core difference of opinion between the couple about what, if anything, should be done to the home. She seemed to be mostly happy with the home as it is and he apparently ready to spend an amount of money for "inspiration" that seemed imprudent. That is, of course, his right to do. However, I cannot begin to help process such a divide in a one and a half hour meeting. This is a lot of the hesitancy that he sensed. In the end, it sounds like he found another architect that he felt is a better "fit". I meant no disrespect and hope that their project is a great improvement to their home and lives.

I requested a consultation on remodeling a house I was considering purchasing. The house was on a very small lot on a historic street. It was clear that all the potential buyers at the open house were considering the same remodel as the house was very small and with an awkward layout. Simply based on photos of the house and the address/location, the provider was able to advise that the remodeling we were considering (adding a second floor) would be difficult if not impossible due to the permits required. This information along with a problematic inspection report led me to not purchase the house. Although I did not use his services in the end, he saved me a lot of money and headache. He was very responsive to email and informative.

This was my inaugural experience with Angie's List, and I am delighted. I have lived in my house for three years, and have several spaces that don't work well for me. I teach music out of my house and had originally planned on simply adding a teaching studio to the back of the house. Eric suggested a completely different take on the addition, one which changed my paradigm completely and solved many more problems than the initial need of a separate teaching space. He listened well to my needs, brainstormed ideas, took measurements, and in less than a week sent me the first conceptual plans for a remodeled space/addition. He and his assistant were both innovative, pragmatic, and enjoyable to work with in this brief encounter.

Eric was very helpful in putting together plans for a basement remodel I'm doing. He paid an onsite visit, took measurements of the area I'm remodeling, gave great advice on several aspects I hadn't yet thought of. About a week after his visit, Eric sent me the drawings he put together as promised. Very detailed. He also helped me do some homework on the permitting process for my project - a process I was very unfamiliar with, but wanted to do it right. I highly recommend Eric for any project and would use him again.

I purchased a coupon for 3 hours of Eric's time in brainstorming plans for an addition. I liked his honesty and integrity in suggesting I find a design-builder that would be less expensive for the small project I have in mind. He fulfilled an hour of the coupon and suggested I save the other two hours for him to go over the plans once I have them drawn up. I am very pleased with what I will receive from my coupon purchase. Eric met me at the house (a small, one bedroom, 900 Sq Ft. 1929 Cape Cod style cottage)--was early, arrived 15 minutes before appointment time, explored the house, discussed possibilities based on my goals (goal was to make the house more livable for my daughter by reclaiming unused attic space, turning it into a 2nd bedroom--rather than having the goal of enhancing the resale value. He took measurements and made sure he understood what I wanted in terms of the remodel. Spent about an hour, perhaps an hour and a half, more than enough time to get the information he needed. A week later he emailed a PDF of a drawing of a floor plan. I asked him also to send me an elevation drawing, to get a better idea of some of the structural details implied by the floor plan. This he said would take about an hour ($150). I've agreed for him to do this, just this morning. I think the $250 for 3 1/2 hours is an ideal way to begin a project like this: you get a professional idea of the feasibility of a project. a ballpark estimate of costs and information on how to proceed--if you want to continue with the project.
Description of Work: Examined the house, took measurements. had comprehensive discussion of remodeling possibilities (turning unused attic space into a bedroom/bath suite) and drew and sent a PDF of a possible floor plan based on my goals.
