Max did an awesome job of the inspection. He really spelled out everything for his recommendations on the exclusion work and the insulation replacement. He took photos and even a video to show us how bad it was. The guys that came out and did the exclusion work did a nice job. I see the mesh that they installed and it looks like it is well fastened. I wasn't home for the insulation work, but I did go down in the crawlspace and check it out after they left. In my opinion, they went above and beyond what I expected. They even insulated the crawlspace entry under the floor and put a rubber seal around the edge. It looked clean and it smelled clean. No sign that there was ever an issue.
Description of Work: Inspection, exclusion and removal and replacement of all of my crawlspace insulation.

The office employees who call to schedule my service appointments are continuously rude and unflexible. They call me every other month and TELL ME when they are coming to perform the service. Most of the time it is not convenient for me and when I tell them I need a different time - THEY FREAK OUT AND CALL ME DIFFICULT. I have 2 tiny chihuahuas and a 15-year old poodle who cannot be exposed to the chemicals as well as 2 locked gates so we need to coordinate access in order to perform the service. This month they called and demanded to come on a specific day in December. My special aunt had just died unexpectedly and I had to fly to Chicago for a family funeral. The employee who called was rude and I explained I would call them when I returned from my trip. She insisted I needed to schedule my appointment for service the day I returned from my trip. GIVE ME A BREAK! I told her very nicely that I would call and schedule AFTER THE HOLIDAYS since I was having company for the holidays. The next thing they are calling me on December 24th insisting I schedule my service - this is after I clearly explained I would contact them after the holidays when they called 3 days prior. I do not appreciate being HARASSED over something as minor as spraying for ants! I CAN HONESTLY SAY I HAVE NEVER BEEN SPOKEN TO SO RUDELY BY A COMPANY I WAS PAYING - WHAT HAPPENED TO CUSTOMER SERVICE? Obviously this company is SO DESPERATE FOR MONEY that they need to harass their customers. Whatever you do - do not use this company! The owner is too busy going on vacation instead of working and taking care of his customers.
Description of Work: I have had a service contract for several years with Eastside Exterminators to come every other month to spray for carpenter ants. Each time they call me - they TELL ME when they are coming. They are totally rude and obnoxious to me when I say that time doesn't work for me. Whatever you do - do not use this company! They have no appreciation for their customers!

[member name removed]-you have been a valued customer of ours since August 2011. We have done our best to accommodate your requests for notification of service over the years. Though not 100% perfect, most of the services were completed to your satisfaction. We have worked in and around your schedule and availability consistently. We keep very detailed notes in our customer's accounts. There were appointments scheduled by you in the past that YOU were not present for. You had stated at one point that you were too busy to remember our appointments and that YOU would call us to schedule. Our procedure is to call a customer that requests prior notice and let them know they are due for service and as in your case request that you call back to confirm/schedule that appointment. Also recorded in our extensive notes on your account are repeated incidents of verbal abuse from you towards our Customer Service Reps. After the most recent such incident on December 24th our owners issued you the following letter: Dear [member name removed], This letter is to service as your notice that we are cancelling your service effective immediately due to consistent verbal abuse of our employees. In more than one encounter on the phone you have used profanity and name calling. Furthermore, the notes on your account indicate years of abusive behavior towards our employees. We feel it would be mutually beneficial for you to find service elsewhere as the conditions of service that you require do not fit into our service plan and we no longer want you as a customer. Best regards, Alex Altizer-CEO, Eastside Exterminators.

It all started good and nice, heck, we were paying for re-insulating the crawlspace, adding insulation to the attic and after a few month took them for pest control. This was late 2010. Then comes this summer (2014) and stuff got ugly. - Did not pick-up everything they were supposed to (i.e. dead rodent) - sprayed "sanitizer" on top of rodent urine and droppings - Came to "check the work" but never checked with us, just left without saying a word - Damages vents (despite what 2 other companies and logic dictates) were "not because of rats". What then? Magic? - Did no advise us about occlusion for the crawlspace which meant that a few years after we now needed to pay $850 to have the crawlspace sanitized, we need to pay $1500 to replace all the crawlspace ducts. And it's our fault, as if anyone sane would spend thousands on redoing a crawlspace if they new rodent will come back and damage it without occlusion. According to them we were cheap or stupid. - Told us we should redo the insulation because of the damage (we don't, it's not damaged, rat aren't Spiderman walking on the ceiling of the crawlspace! And a few others too long to list here... net-net on their according to Deanna Townsen the President: Nothing is ever their fault, they went at length to explain we were the only to blame for everything, their mistakes (e.g. leaving some metal plates in the gutter after the occlusion work 1 month ago) were "normal" and not a sign of poor labor quality, etc... Bottom line: Avoid them like the plague, or be ready to: - Pay for incomplete or botched service - Be blamed for any issue, because you know, they're perfect. - Be ready to pay, in total, little by little, much more than you should have. I'd avoid them if I were you. But it's your home and your money... UPDATE 1/11/15: In his comment Eastside Exterminator writes: " We did not know that he had already hired another company to do the cleanup work because he never stated that in his communications with us" This is another example of them bending reality to their advantage. Here is what I literally wrote them, in a registered (Snail) mail I sent on 11/28: " [..] I will let you decide if you want to regain your professional pride and do the right thing by us or not. In the positive you can [...] pay for the about $850 crawlspace clean-up, vapor barrier change and main-line insulation redo (we cannot wait for you to come back to us on this, it is too much of an health hazard for our asthmatic family members). {..}" The reader can see the disingenuousness of their statement "we did not know" when my letter said "pay for $850.. we CANNOT WAIT for you to come back" . as far as " even though he had declined our company on several occasions to block the rodents from his structure" ; this is just a plain lie. They are making this up to discharge themselves of all error. Once again, in their mind, they're perfect and customer are stupid or cheap. Use them at your own risk. When all goes well they'll be great. The day something happens, it will all be your fault. Several neighbors use them and one just got an issue and was poorly treated and now changed her mind about them too. If you are using them, you should seriously consider switching to a more customer friendly and less "we never make mistake" one!
Description of Work: Last work was Occlusion. But this was the last (leg) of many work: insulation (crawlspace and attic) in 2010, pest control (2011-2014). Total spent over 4 years >4k$.

Response from Eastside Exterminators
Eastside Exterminators believes very strongly in great customer service. From time to time we do have an unsatisfied customer and do our best to solve their issues quickly, honestly with integrity, fairness, and consistency. As an owner, it saddens me to have an unhappy customer. I have been a part of this company for 26 years and have serviced thousands of satisfied customers. Unfortunately we have had many communications with this member with no resolution. The member is right, we did replace his insulation in December of 2010. At the time of the replacement we offered to address the member's rodent issues but he declined. We document all customer decisions who decline a rodent inspection and rodent exclusion repairs. In this case we have a signed proposal from the member accepting the replacement of insulation and declining a rodent inspection and rodent exclusion repairs. With the signed proposal accepting the insulation replacement, we moved forward with the work. The member called seven months later for spider and ant service (July 2011). At this time we told him there were still signs of rodents in his crawl space and we would need to perform a rodent inspection to determine all rodent entry points. He declined a rodent Inspection and rodent exclusion repairs again which is indicated in the signed Pest Agreement. We moved forward with the service in July 2011. Our target pests for the next 3 years would be spiders and odorous house ants, not rodents. We told him the best we could do based on his decision to decline a rodent inspection and rodent exclusion repairs was to set up and maintain outside exterior bait stations to help reduce the population outside his home to hopefully have less of an impact to the interior of his crawl space. This is a service we no longer offer our customers (outside bait stations only service) unless we perform a rodent Inspection and rodent exclusion repairs. The reason for this decision is we know in the long run it is not best for our customers. This is why we offered the member $850 of service to clean up after the rodents. Fast forward to September 2014 where the memeber had to make the decision about the rodents inside his structure because rodents are now entering his living space. The member agreed that we could perform a rodent inspection and rodent exclusion repairs. We performed rodent repairs in November 2014, at that time and several conversation forward, the member wanted us to warrantee the rodent damaged crawl space from the previous three years. As a show of good faith, even though he had declined our company on several occasions to block the rodents from his structure and with no warrantee for rodents, we did offer the $850 worth of clean up as stated above. We tried our best to communicate to the member what his home needed. We feel our offer was fair for someone that refused our attempts at help over the years for his rodent issues. We did not know that he had already hired another company to do the cleanup work because he never stated that in his communications with us.

Fine, I guess. It's entirely possible that the work needed to be done, but I'm pretty sure there was a mouse in the house because my father-in-law left a door open for three hours. I just got the work done to make my wife happy, but I'm pretty convinced nothing was getting in through those points.

Initial visit from technician: Installed wire mesh, but missed two bird blocks as well as leaving multiple gaps uncovered. Mesh was installed crooked in places, which was surprising since the inspector reiterated multiple times how important it was to have them installed level. Did not use pads for ladder, causing minor damage to metal gutters Did not use proper footwear for composite shingle roof Instead of flashing around the sump pump drain, cut and screwed on wire mesh Dryer vent guard installation was very poor. Added a wood block to the house, as an attachment point, but used multiple pieces of scrap wood, did not caulk or seal the wood, and did not prime or paint. Metal guard was damaged and began to rust within weeks. Second visit from technician: In spite of poor quality of work, the same technician was sent again Wire mesh for bird blocks was fixed Instead of installing flashing around sump pump drain, tried to seal it with silicone sealant Instead of removing and redoing the dryer vent guard, tried to cover it with silicon sealant and then paint. Did not come with equipment for painting so used mine. Rusting metal guard was not replaced. After speaking at length with the manager for all technicians, and communicating all of my concerns, I was assured that a new crew would be sent out that would resolve all issues. I was convinced to give them one more chance, with the hope that this was an anomaly: A new crew came out and installed flashing around pump drain and completely replaced metal guard and wood shim for dryer vent A single piece of wood was used this time, and it appears to have been caulked (though there does not appear to be a sufficient amount along the drip edge, there remains a gap between the wood shim and the wood siding of the house) Wood was primed, but not painted (they arrived late for their appointment and did not have enough time to finish) Multiple holes in wood siding left from previous installation were not filled Debris left in the middle of yard After leaving multiple voice mails with the technician manager over a period of days, which were all un-returned, I contacted the main office and had them contact him. He said that he would send the crew out to finish the job. However, he instead sent the original technician who had done poor work to begin with, who made a mess of the painting. After he left, I did my best to clean up what he had done done wrong (multiple drips formed, paint on surfaces that shouldn?t be painted).
Description of Work: After an initial rodent inspection and exclusion report, we went forward with all repairs that were recommended: Install new wire mesh on all bird blocks Install flashing along 2 feet of outer wall base Install flashing around sump pump drain exit from house Install metal cage dryer vent guard

We are sincerely saddened that you have had such an unfavorable experience with our company. We have been doing rodent exclusion work for over 40 years and have an outstanding reputation for quality work in our industry however, we are not perfect. On our quality assurance inspection on November 24th (after the exclusion work was completed on November 18th) our inspector requested the exclusion technician return to address issues with the original work. Our protocol is to send the original technician so that they have the opportunity to complete the work as it should be. The next appointment was scheduled so our Exclusion Manager could meet with you personally to inspect the work and address any further concerns you may have had. It was determined that the dryer vent and pipe still needed to be redone. We then sent out another exclusion technician to do that work. The work was completed on December 18th--the wood primed but too wet to paint-we would need to schedule another appointment to return. We did schedule our "finish" exclusion technician to return to finish the wood work-however, the jobs were switched that morning without management's knowledge and the original exclusion tech returned to your home-which did not meet with your approval. We sincerely apologize for this mishap and would very much like to return and complete the work to your satisfaction. We do value you as a customer and would like to mend our working relationship with you.

I particularily want to speak about the gentleman who came to do the inspection. His name is Maxwell Pappas. He was amazing and really cared about my problem and gave me options as well as pointed out other serious issues that they would not address but he thought I should know about so I would address them. He also bid on issues the company could do for me. He was very professional, kind, and knowledgeable. I recommend him highly!!!! He is great representative of this company. My only complaint is that I felt the quote was very high.

Below is the e-mail that I wrote to Eastside Exterminators after our appointment. This e-mail received no response from them. This is very telling of their customer service and their priorities. Long story short, we will not be hiring eastside exterminators again. "I just wanted to say that we were very displeased with the service that we recently received. The exterminating was successful (we no longer have hornets, at least for the moment). This being said, the service prior was very poor. My wife and I planned our entire day around this appointment, only to have the technician not arrive. After we called to inquire, we were told that someone else's exterminator issue was ranked higher than ours and thus they have chosen to arrive late and would arrive in 30 minutes. Three things about this bothered me (1) You were 90 minutes late and had we not reached out, we would have never known an ETA (2) Our exterminator issue was verbalized as unimportant to you and demonstrated to us as such (3) Nothing was done or said to make us feel valued as customers. All that was communicated was defense of behavior and no restitution was offered. My wife and I continue to have needs in keeping insects and wildlife out of our home, but due to this past experience are thinking that we may bring our business in the future elsewhere."

We sincerely apologize for the unacceptable manner in which your appointment was handled by our company. It is our policy to advise our customer's if our technician is running early or late for an arrival time. The fact the YOU had to call our office when your technician did arrive at the specified time is not typical and will be addressed. In regards to your appointment being any less important than another-we value all of our customers. The technician did receive an emergency call prior to your appointment however that does not excuse the fact that the information should have been communicated to you. We very much would like you to consider our company for future pest control issues. Should you choose to do so, please contact me directly so that may give you special consideration. The inspector went through our home including our attic and crawlspace. He identified several potential access points that rodents could use to enter our attic or crawlspace. He also identified our need for additional insulation in our crawlspace and with our heating ducts. He left us a written bid to do the rodent control work and a separate bid to do the insulation work. He was prompt and professional. As the rodent access points have existed for many years with no problems, we elected to do some of the work ourselves.
Description of Work: They inspected our home for potential rodent access points and areas where our insulation could be upgraded as our home is over 25 years old.

**** UPDATE- I have contacted the company 3 times over at least as many weeks to get my revised quote they were going to send as they said they would work with my budget to do the things that were most important (and not the entire $5K+ quote they initially gave me) at first they were responsive, although slow getting back to me, they did send an initial revised quote based on what they thought should be completed. But this 2nd time around when I said I didn't need all that work and stated exactly what I wanted done and asked how much just that would be, I was forwarded to the tech who said she'd get back to me by email but I have heard nothing back. As I said, I have contacted them at least 3 times now over as many weeks. I give up. I'm going with a company that my old real estate agent advised. ***Old, INACCURATE Initial Review:***This inspection was far more detailed and comprehensive than I anticipated. Wendy who came out was on time, respectful, friendly, and fantastic. I was a bit dismayed with the results- both the damage and the cost of suggested repairs! The repair recommendations were very thorough, from the exclusion and repairs paperwork to the cleanup and restoration papers, and Wendy had taken some great photos to explain exactly what was going on and why she recommended what she did. Unfortunately I wasn't able to afford all that was recommended, but Wendy has been fantastic with rewriting estimates and whittling things down by importance in order to fit my budget. I haven't completed the work yet, but just got back in touch with them today to do so. The initial inspection was probably 2 months ago, so I appreciate them still working with me. Thank you Eastside!!

I found the company to be very responsive - I have had a lot on my plate this summer and they continued contacting me when I would drop the ball on getting service scheduled. This was an Angie's List "special" but given the tiny square footage of our rental, they accommodated my request to include the garage as our renter uses it for a home office and needed some protection from spiders etc. They made it convenient to schedule the service and our tenant reported they arrived when they said they would and did the work as promised. I will use them again.

Terrible service! Will never buy their service again. Had an inspection by another vendor and they showed many areas where the contractor didnt clean the cob webs, spiders, their fecal matter, and paper wasp nests etc, though we had specifically asked. Have to get the pest control service again. Total waste of time and money. And shame on Angie's list to recommend them as great service and lure with a coupon. They claimed that they are giving $350 worth of service in $99 with coupon. When the contractor arrived, he indicated that this is what you get since you paid coupon price. Terrible.
