Don't believe them. We needed water hammer fixed. The guy started by "looking over" our existing system hot water heater set up. He then began by telling my the water heater was "out of code" (which surprised me, since our home inspector hadn't said so). He added that the venting of it was also "out of code." He then tried to sell me on getting an in-line water heating system (without mentioning the approx. $9000 dollars infrastructure to support it). --- I checked on the internet and with other companies after he left. THERE IS NO FEDERAL OR WASHINGTON STATE CODE FOR WATER HEATER SIZE, AND THE VENTING WAS IN CODE!!!!! He also didn't think the problem was the pressure relief valve (since it still could restrict or increase flow), and sold me some hammer suppressers (priced slightly higher than the hardware store) for the dishwasher, etc, since I could install them myself. He wrote us an estimate to crawl under the house to install a hammer suppresser for the fridge. [It turned out to be installable right behind the fridge, and I did that one, too.] Contrary to his conclusion, the pressure relief valve was exactly the problem! [Thanks, McClendon's hardware store expert!] I bought the part ($40), and paid a handyman to install it ($80) just because I was sick of dealing with the issue. WATER HAMMER PROBLEM SOLVED. [P.S. The date I gave above may be off by a couple of days, as we did not keep the sheet with his estimate.]

Response from BOB LARSON PLUMBING
We confirmed that there was an issue with water hammer, and that the noise was most prevalent in the area of the water heater. We sold him hammer arrestors for the washing machine and dishwasher, and gave a bid for installing one for the icemaker under the house, since we didn't have one sized for 1/4" tubing on our truck. We also gave a bid for installing one in the piping behind the water heater, and since the water heater was nearing the end of the average life span, we gave a bid for replacing it. Kevin doesn't recall the issue with the venting, since that was 3 months ago, but we DO NOT LIE to customers, EVER, so I'm positive there was something that drew his attention, probably that it didn't have adequate slope, which is a common issue. The seismic strapping on the water heater was out of code, Uniform Plumbing Code 508.2. We admit that we missed the diagnosis regarding the pressure regulator, and that will be the subject of our next training session tomorrow. But to suggest that we intentionally lied in order to sell a customer something that wasn't needed is libelous and false. We had half a day invested into this job, and charged nothing for our time. We sold 3 hammer arrestors at $15 each, delivered to the home, which is far more than a fair price. We gave options for a new water heater, a hammer arrestor at the water heater, and a hammer arrestor for the icemaker installed in the crawl space, all of which were declined. We didn't even offer a bid for a tankless ("in-line") water heater, as there didn't seem to be any interest. In no way did we try to pressure the homeowner to buy something he didn't need, and find it offensive that he would imply such. 99.9% of our customers would confirm that we are competent and honest, but we always run into those few who can't be pleased.

I am active duty and had just come home from being away two weeks, I had a long flight and all I wanted was a hot shower! As soon as I walk through the door my family informs me the water heater was not working and had been in that worthless condition for a week! I called around and some companies were flat out rude, so that was a automatic no no for me. Donna was very nice and found someone to come out within the hour. Kevin was very kind and professional. He installed a new water heater the same day! My only very minor negative was the bid went over by 250.00, but he warned me that while he would try his best to stay at cost that could happen.
Description of Work: The technician Kevin came out promptly, diagnosed the damage (old water heater had to be replaced) despite it being late in the day he drove to his office and picked up a new water heater and installed the same day as the call.

I called because the insta-hot I had was no longer working. The one that was in had been put in incorrectly. I wanted a new one and this plumber got me a good product. I told him I was concerned about my water heater and he took time to explain about them and we saw it had just started leaking. He was very prompt about getting me a new on and installing it. Both guys that came were nice, professional and funny. They also replaced some pipes that were rusting and put in a new kitchen facuet for me. They seemed more concerned that every thing worked as it should rather then watching the clock. I would have this company come back again and have givien the card to a few friends in the neighborhood that have asked.

Initially called for quote. While I could've gone for a less expensive water heater only company or a more expensive on demand water heater, I chose Bob Larson because I prefer to deal with smaller companies that are more responsive to residential customer's needs when you have a plumbing emergency. A water heater company won't be there for you then, but a local Plumber like Bob Larson will be. So I paid more for that, and they installed my water heater to code the same day, and where there was some gray area in the code (e.g. expansion tank and stantion) we discussed it and decided together what was best. The work was done same day, quickly and professionally. They cleaned up afterward and we've had no issues.

We provided the cartridge, which ended up having to be a replacement kit for the shower, with new trim ring, handle, diverter valve, etc. That's about $200 of the work listed, which was paid for separately. He suggested alternatives to save me some money, but I elected not to do those in this case. I really wanted a new set of materials, so we went with the ones we bought. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but needed somebody who had taken a complicated valve mechanism apart and put it back together, not a simple cartridge replacement, which I've done before. The replacement valve in the incoming water supply also went well. It required cutting the pipe, removing the section of old pipe, and inserting a new lever valve with attached pluming to mate up with original plumbing. We picked Bob Larson from Angie's list, printed out a 10% coupon and scheduled an appointment. The technician arrived with a truck with plenty of parts if needed. He was clean, professional, examined the situation, gave me estimates that were reasonable for each piece of work, did both jobs in about 1 1/2 hours, and cleaned up after his work. He was pleasant to talk to and kept me well informed on every step. He honored my coupon and gave me another coupon for future work. I was pleased with the work and would recommend Bob Larson plumbing, and use them again.
Description of Work: We needed a cartridge replacement on an old Delta Monitor shower fixture in a house built in 1900 and remodeled numerous times. We also needed a new master shut off valve for the house's water supply in the basement, to make it more convenient to shut the incoming water off.

I was very impressed with the entire experience, from the cheerful person handling the telephone to the punctuality and professionalism of Bob, the owner, who completed the work. Bob Larson Plumbing is now in my contact list as the company to call when I need plumbing services in the future.
Description of Work: Having never really needed the services of a plumber, I picked Bob Larson Plumbing based on the firm's reviews on Angie's List. My immediate problem was a toilet with a slow leak that caused water to pool around the base. An appointment was made for the following day. Bob determined that the problem was actually a leak from the tank and since this particular toilet was rather old, we decided to replace all of the components in the tank in addition to the damaged seal. While he was here, I had him replace the flapper in another toilet that had been running as well as look at a bathroom faucet with a leak. The latter required parts to be ordered which arrived within a few days and the project was completed when promised.

I had attempted to replace a malfunctioning bathtub spout (spigot) myself. Instead I managed to break the whole spout off - along with the copper water pipe - with only 1/2" of copper water pipe left sticking out of the wall. Did a search on Angie's List (thank you Angie's list!) to search for a good plumber. The first A rated plumber with a good number of reviews (30+) closest to my house was Bob Larson Plumbing. I called them Monday morning around 8:20am - they said someone could be there between 11am and noon that day! Bob (the owner) arrived at 11:15am - proceeded to put on slip-on shoe covers so he wouldn't track any dirt in from outside (are you kidding me - my wife loves that!) and went to the bathroom. He described our options along with quotes - we talked about it - decided on the plan of action - and he performed the work - he ended up taking off the remaining copper pipe - replacing it with new - pressure tested the new pipe - added a brand new spout he had in his truck - and caulked it. The whole experience was the best contractor experience I have ever had. Whenever I talk about plumbing issues with family or friends - I am going to tell them about Bob and Bob Larson Plumbing! Bob was courteous, efficient, punctual and professional.

I had a broken tub/shower diverter knob in the my circa 1949 bathtub, and some leaky/hard to turn off hot and cold knobs. The assembly is a size no longer manufactured, and was told by a couple of plumbers it couldn't be just fixed without knocking a hole in the wall. One plumber said he did research and couldn't find replacement valves, and he'd have to replace the whole thing, which meant either tearing out the tile or going in through the back wall -- a $1900 job even before any wall repair. I called Bob Larson and asked if they had experience working with old houses, and the customer service rep promised to send out Bob the owner himself to give me a second opinion. He was able to fix just the stems, with just a quick trip to his warehouse to get the parts. The whole thing was done in a couple of hours for only around $300-$350 (I forget the exact amount). The new knobs weren't anything fancy, but neither were the old ones. Everything works perfectly now - no cranking hard to get the water to shut off, no pliers whenever I want to take a bath.

In the state of WA it is illegal for a general contractor to do plumbing work, unless they also have a licensed journeyman plumber on their staff. We have seen cases where insurance companies have denied claims because the owner failed to hire a licensed plumber to do the work. Manufacturers of fixtures, pipe and fittings have also been known to deny warranty claims on the same grounds.

Had planned to have both the shower assembly in one stand up shower and the entire tub & shower assembly replaced in anther bathroom. Unfortunately, expectations of what plumbing should cost is often set by those who may be great technicians, but have no training on the business side of things, and are slowly going broke. Running a quality service company is an expensive proposition, entailing many expenses that the average customer has no inkling about, but that helps us be able to provide consistent quality service on a long term basis. And we are not the cheapest plumbers around, but far from the most expensive.

I was very disappointed with this company's performance. The plumber arrived almost 3 hrs late the first day and 2 hrs late the second day with no communication or updates so I had to hang around job site for no good reason. He had to make 2 runs to get parts which slowed things down further. The second trip was necessary because he got the wrong size supplies on the first run! When the job was done the plumber gave me a bill with a single entry for $486.25 plus tax (no itemization for material/ labor). The time spent on the job, not chasing parts, was 1.5 hrs. At that time he told me that he did not charge me for the drippy faucet to make up for the tardiness. He said the drip would normally cost around $190. I'll admit that I know little about plumbing but that sounded pretty high for such a repair. I then presented my Angie's List coupon for a 10% discount which he would not honor as he already gave me enough of a break on the faucet repair. As I see it the $190 drippy faucet was was provided to make up for the tardiness and the discount from Angie's List was a separate matter. The plumber disagreed so I gave him my VISA card and he was on his way.

We don't like to make excuses, but there are reasons why we sometimes fail at delivering the top level of service we strive for. In this instance, our plumber had his truck stolen from in front of his house. We recovered the truck, but all the contents were stripped clean, which means we were scrambling to replace tools, equipment, and parts, while maintaining our schedule. We should have done a much better job of communicating with customers through the challenge. Regarding price,I'm not sure where the expectation of time and material billing originated, but when one buys a cup of coffee, how often does one ask for a breakdown? We don't charge what we think we can get away with, nor do we charge what we believe the market will bear, but we use a program that includes all of our direct costs for the average repair indicated, all of our overhead costs, which are extensive and would probably surprise most customers, and 10% for profit. It's an expensive proposition to run a successful service business, and we're not the cheapest plumbers around, but we are far from the most expensive.

I'm sorry to hear that we gave the impression we did, that means we failed at our job. We have no reservations about working on manufactured homes, we do it all the time. Our plumber said he gave a bid to replace a specialty tub, and that the customer wanted to discuss it with her spouse; he had no clue that he had communicated apathy, which is something we will work to improve. I also notice that we were given an "F" on price, which indicates to me that we failed to communicate the value we provide, which is something else for us to improve upon. We fight a never-ending battle against false expectations regarding what plumbing services should cost, false expectations usually set by plumbers who don't know what they are doing on the business side of things, and are slowly going broke. We are not the cheapest plumbers around, but far from the most expensive.

The plumber was on time. We discussed the leak, the issues with old galvanized pipes (the house was built in 1929) and potential solutions. Given the pipes are exposed it was easy to see the weak section of the pipe and take care of the repair. I would have preferred copper, but it was far too expensive, so agreed to plastic, for replacing about 8 feet of pipe. For the hour it took to complete the repair and the limited materials involved I feel the cost was rather high. For this reason I didn't deal with the remainder of the old pipes.
Description of Work: In a section of the galvanized pipe leading to the washing machine, a leak had developed, dripping onto the appliance from above. The washing machine is located in an unfinished basement. I wanted the weak section of pipe replaced and, if the price was right, replace the network of old galvanized pipe coming from the hot water tank to the washer.
