Services we offer
Commercial & residential landscape involving installation of paver patios, walkways, block retaining walls (up to 4' tall), pondless water features, concrete curbing, irrigation systems, sod & grass seed, and mulch (comparable to hydroseeding), spray service and fertilization. We also offer general lawn care maintenance which includes mowing and edging. Other scopes of work: fall cleanups, irrigation repairs, sprinkler system turn-on, and blowout.
Services we don't offer
Lawn thatching, pulling weeds, concrete flatwork, tall tree removal, tall tree trimming, spring cleanups, rototilling, artificial turf installation.
The crew arrived at the scheduled time and everything went very smoothly. They used a heavy machine to tamp down the soil used to fill the hole where the pond had been so there would be no settling later. A heavy roller was used to grade the area. The sod was beautiful, lush green grass. The work was done over a two day period, and the area was left immaculately clean. A truck with a trailer filled with soil had to be backed up our driveway to get to our backyard. The driveway slopes upward and curves to the left, and narrows to a point that was just barely wider than the wheels on the trailer. Whoever drove that truck maneuvered it perfectly! Nothing was damaged anywhere on the property during the course of their work. The day after the work was completed, we noticed that there was a leak in the sprinkler system. We left a message for Mike about this. The very next day someone came out and fixed the leak.
Description of Work: Removed pond liner and filled with the hole with boulders and soil; put sod over pond area and next to ivy; cut arborvitae down at ground level and hauled away; Re-fabricated the sprinkler system in the area and replaced five sprinkler parts.

First off a big THANK YOU to Mike for coming out so quickly to resolve this problem. The sprinkler line was choked off due to some really nasty tree roots. Mike started digging to find the line that was choked off. After two hours of digging thru some tree roots he was able to isolate the correct line and make a repair so that I could start watering the lawn. He came back today and finished filling in the area that was dug up and then checked the operation of the system and made some adjustments so the yard is being watered correctly. I will definitely be using Desert Sun Landscaping again. I would recommend Desert Sun Landscaping to anyone who needs work done.

Hello [member name removed], Sorry for the timeline expectations did not meet what you had understood from our phone conversation. I was able to visit your house project on the Friday specified and I evaluated the situation and took measurements and notes. On the next Tuesday you called the office to inquire about the bid and you left a message. I received that message on Tuesday evening and moved your bid to the front of the bid list ahead of many bids that I had visited before yours and figured out your bid numbers on your projects. I called you on Wednesday over the phone and gave you the evaluation and the numbers and left them on your voice mail. On the next day Thur. I got an e-mail from Angie's list letting me know that someone left me a review. It was yours where it said I did not follow through. Again I'm sorry for the miscommunication and will continue to strive to keep communication verbiage crystal clear. I hope I will get a chance to work with you in the future. Thanks, Mike Phillips Owner Desert Sun Landscaping Spokane Division

Great, as usual. We are frequently away from home for long periods of time (up to three months). We have to rely on other people and companies to take care of various things while we are away: mail delivery, newspaper delivery, pet care, lawn care, etc. Sometimes we are disappointed when things aren't taken care of as they are supposed to be. But we never have to worry about our lawn care, Desert Sun Landscaping always reliably does a great job at what we consider to be a very reasonable price.
Description of Work: They mowed and trimmed our lawn once a week for three weeks while we were away in eastern Europe.

This is an outstanding company. They did a lot of yard work for us last year -- new sprinkler system, new awning, etc. This year we needed a tree planted. Big project, little project -- it made no difference. Their communication, work ethic, punctuality, work performed, clean up was excellent. Nice, hard-working, ethical -- the best!

Mike arrived on time, listened to our ideas, contributed ideas to our plan, gave us an estimate, and a reasonable target date. He responded to all phone calls and emails. His crew arrived on time, were skilled and helpful, and worked very hard. The job was completed on time and within budget. We love our new patio and landscaping and would certainly hire this company again!

Found this company on Angies's list. Spoke with Mike first on the phone, then after they came out to do my estimate. Extremely reliable and professional. The last time they came to cut, I had forgotten to turn off my sprinklers. They called let me know they were coming back the next day and then called after they were finished to let me know what day they would be coming every week and confirm everything. VERY happy with this company, their communication and the work they have done. Extra added bonus, they were willing to come out to Cheney to take care of my lawn. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

This did cost me for the labor ( I would have had to pay for sod anyway) but in the long run, I did not have to absolutely kill myself for three days over a weekend and they had it laid and edged beautifully in one day. All I had to do was water the new lawn. It was awesome!! In a few weeks we had a freeze. My new lawn went dormant and in the spring I had a beautiful addition that was already strong and healthy. They did a great job! I've recommended them to others. I will use them again in a heart beat!
Description of Work: They came to my property soon after the initial call and listened well to my plans for an extension on my yard. At first I had them do some dirt work with leveling and adding topsoil to a certain area with the anticipation of doing sod placement myself in the spring. Then after speaking to the owner Mike, and getting a quote for them to do the sod placement, I decided to have them do the sod at the same time.

I am an enthusiastic fan of Angie's List, and have enjoyed using it for several years. This unfortunate situation does not alter my attitude. In December 2013 I needed some yard debris cleaned up on rental property that had recently been left to me to me following my Mother's death. Because of my positive experiencewith Angie's List where I reside, I added Spokane to my membership and found a $99.00 BIG DEAL 4 hour yard cleanup which included a trip to the dump. The owner had excellent reviews. Never having purchased an online offer before, I called Angie's List to inquire how it would work if I needed work beyond the Big Deal Offer and asked if any additional charges could be included with the charge card payment. The woman told me additional charges would be addressed by the business owner. I wasn't certain how long the offer was running and the woman shared that he had just renewed the offer for another 6 months or possibly one year. I purchased the Big Deal offer online which directed me to contact the owner and schedule the work. I emailed the owner who informed me the $99.00 Big Deal Offer was NO longer available, but he could do it for MORE money, $120.00 plus tax. In a later phone conversation he told me he had contacted Angie's List and canceled the special offer but would now honor it for me because of Angie's List. At that point I felt really sorry for him and offered to pay him the additional money, believing that Angie's List could have made an error and he shouldn't have to sustain the loss because of an error. He sounded like his business was struggling. I also told him that there would be more work in the Spring for him. I asked him if he could give me an estimate of what the cost overruns might be. My thinking was that the advertised "additional hours of lawn and yard work services can be added for $40/per labor hour" was comparable to our area. That rate would NOT be billed at a PER PERSON rate. The offer does not disclose that EACH employee will be compensated at a rate of $40.00 per hour. In his estimate the owner wrote; "Hope you had a Merry Christmas! I went to your rental place today. That is a lot of debris and branches! I want to make sure you get $99 value from what we do, so I think we can take a dump trailer and pick up load and pump it for that price. This is different then all the other Big Deal clean ups, because we did the clean up and then hauled it away what we cleaned up for 4 man hours of work. This is already piled up, so it's difficult to make sure to get you your value!" From the above paragraph I was under the impression that because a great deal of the work had already been done for him he was concerned that the BIG DEAL OFFER wasn't really fair to me. He details how it's difficult to make sure I get the VALUE from it as he compares it to other Big Deal clean ups. He goes on to ESTIMATE that the rest of the job could be around $200 plus the dump costs. When the invoice arrived my husband and I were very confused by the billing. There was additional sales tax applied to each of the three trips to the dump (not a legal charge). He double billed for one of the dump trips which was included in the original BIG DEAL OFFER. After my first inquiry he removed the sales tax, after my second he agreed to remove one of the trips to the dump. I asked for the dump receipts so I could verify the hours he claimed using the Dump Receipt Time Stamps. Initially he sent me two and refused the third saying the receipt belonged to him because it was part of HIS BIG DEAL although I had paid for that Offer through Angie's List. The invoice naturally raised a number of RED FLAGS. Were these additional sales tax errors and double charging something he wasn't aware of after claiming to be in business for a number of years? Did he submit the data and review his invoices? Wouldn't it be reasonable to expect that after the sales tax error was raised by a customer that he would have looked over the invoice in case other errors were made and make any necessary adjustments. If the contractor has nothing to hide, and claims to cares for his Angie's List customers, why not provide the Time stamped dump receipt as verification to a customer who lives some 350 miles away? Several weeks later he changed the reason for not giving me all three receipts in a letter to the Better Business Bureau calling my character into question. In his words he wrote the following to the BBB; "Without question, I sent off the two that I was charging her for. After a talk with a tax advisor I found they advise contractors to not give duplicate receipts to customers when the invoice from our company already shows for the customers proof for their tax write off purposes that they were charged. The advisor went on to say "When giving the customer the receipt for two dump charges, we have essentially allowed the customer the opportunity to double the dump charges as a write off on her rentals", because our receipts reflects dump charges and the receipts sent to her shows the same dump charge prices without our company name on them." The owner's explanation for $40.00 per person x 2= $80.00 per hour labor charges was detailed. If he had been as explicit in his original estimate as he was when I questioned his charges I never would have hired him beyond the Big Deal 4 hour offer His explanation, "We, my foreman and I, worked a total of 5.5 hours (11 man hours) total on your clean-up project. Desert Sun Landscaping Spokane Division?s regular rates are $40 per hour per man. This price covers all business costs, including but not limited to, paid labor for each employee to and from the job site and dump site, equipment (chainsaw), dump trailer, truck, fuel, insurance, advertising, etc. This is the rate that we have had for all our customers for the past 3 years including our other Angie?s List customers. In regards to your hour wage numbers of $11.33-$18.16: These numbers reflect an amount paid to an employee, not what a company charges to do services. The Angie?s List ?Big Deal? Special is exactly that a ?Special?. After we pay Angie?s List their portion, pay the employees, pay fuel, we lose money on these deals." He wrote to the BBB: "Unfortunately, these are the final words from an e-mail she sent me which states "You HAVE BEEN ripped off!" which shows that there are some customers out there that want something for nothing and will do anything to achieve that goal. I do indeed feel that this is something Karen has practiced in the past and gotten really good at." The quote, "You have been ripped off." was taken out of context. It was a part of the legal conclusion given to me by an attorney who had all correspondence and facts in hand. The actions of this contractor speak to his character. He is now claiming to be the victim at the hands of an attorney and a 66 year old retired first grade school teacher. I find it interesting that in an effort to give an Angie's List customer a "good deal", his errors on my invoice amounted to additional charges of $47.11. It concerns me to think that there may be many others who have had or could have a similar experience. To think I actually felt sorry for him and was willing to pay him more.
Description of Work: He loaded an existing stack of yard debris for the dump, removed additional yard debris and took it to the dump. There were a total of three trips to the dump. He asked my worker on the job site for help in loading up his truck.

We do not want to accept [member name removed] offer of $100 plus dump fee payment. Please review the below statement do understand why. Right after Thanksgiving, my company decided to run a promotion to help customers do some last bit of yard cleanup before the winter weather arrived. My agreement with Angie’s list was that the ad would be an email blast to Angie’s list customers and would be good for 7 days and be available up to 20 customers. Once the 7 days had elapsed, I truly felt that the special was over. To my surprise, I had [member name removed] email me stating that she had purchased the BIG DEAL off of Angie’s List. I responded to [member name removed] through Angie’s list to tell her that the ad was expired but I could do still do the job for a lower amount of $30/hr ONLY BECAUSE SHE WAS AN ANGIE’S LIST CUSTOMER. (Angie’s List charge per hour was $25/hr AND mine was $40/hr so I went below halfway which would have been $120 total instead of $99 for 4 hours of labor and one truck and trailer load of debris). I then contacted Angie’s List and found out that they were in fact STILL RUNNING the ad. At that point I decided to honor the ad and only charge the $99 as it wasn’t [member name removed] fault or problem, but ours. [member name removed] did receive 11 hours of labor (plus dump fees of $90.33) for only $99 because she has not made a payment on an agreed price. The amount she currently owes and is disputing is $307.73. [member name removed] asked for an estimate on what the additional cost might be for the debris and boat on her property. I sent the verbiage listed below in parentheses to [member name removed] regarding the job she wanted us to do. (Estimate- $99 for trailer and truck load and to dump. To finish the rest of the debris and the boat would be $200 plus dump charges!) I felt that this was self-explanatory on what we would charge above and beyond the $99 special. [member name removed] email agreement to the above estimate on December 26, 2013 Good morning Mike, Think it’s a good idea to just move forward with your plan whenever the weather works for you. When you have your final tally after the dump I will also add the additional money that originally you responded to me with because of the angies list error. I know you wanted to honor the Angies List offer which I appreciate, however I don’t expect an innocent error to cause you a loss. I’m aware how hard you work and value the services you provide. I will mail a check to you the minute you have a total. Hoe you have a great day! As a contractor used to dealing with customers through email, I felt this was a far “written agreement” to go ahead with the work, knowing [member name removed] agreed to the estimated price given above and beyond the Angie’s List Big Deal Promotion. When I did the invoice for [member name removed], I needed to calculate the difference between what she had originally paid to Angie’s List and what was really owed. I then needed to add in dump charged and send off a final invoice. This particular job was different in the fact that we had 10 other Angie’s list customers and all of them fit the parameters of the Big Deal, meaning we were able to get the job done within the 4 hours AND we were able to get all of the debris into one truck and trailer load. Therefore, NO invoices were sent to them as they had already paid through Angie’s List. As we wrote the above, [member name removed] received 11 total hours of labor. If we were able to calculate the cost outside of the special, the total would be $440 plus tax plus any dump charges. We subtracted the 4 hours and a truck and trailer dump charge which were included in the $99 special. At regular price for 4 hours and a truck and trailer load this job would have totaled $210.03. She paid $99 through Angie’s List. The additional work should have been $240 plus tax plus two loads. This total would have been $351.21. Since I had already sent her an estimate of $200 plus dump charges, I took off the additional $40. I essentially felt that it was a better deal for her. Unfortunately, my software added tax to the dump fees when I calculated them onto her invoice. She also told me I had inadvertently charged her for the dump fee that was supposed to be included in the Angie’s List special. As soon as she alerted me to the issues, I corrected them and sent her a revised invoice. [member name removed] also asked for the receipts for the dump charges. Without question, I sent off the two that I was charging her for. After a talk with a tax advisor I found their advice to contractors is to not give duplicate receipts to customer when the invoice from our company already shows for the customers proof for the tax write off purposes that they were charged. The advisor went on to say “When giving the customer the receipt for two dump charges, we have essentially allowed the customer the opportunity to double the dump charges as a write off on her rentals”, because our receipts reflects dump charges and the receipts sent to her shows the same dump charge prices without our company name on them. Her request for the third receipt to show “Time Stamp” in order to verify hours is weird. Her “eyes and ears” contractor was at the site the entire time we were there. If you look at the estimate you will see that she really is only paying us for a job, not hours worked. My estimate of $200 was primarily based on what I charge per man hour but she really did get a DEAL because her final invoice does not reflect the actual man hour charges but the original estimate I gave her. Unfortunately, these are the final words from an e-mail [member name removed] sent me which states “You HAVE BEEN ripped off!” which shows that there are some customer out there that want something for nothing and will do anything to achieve that goal. [member name removed] issued a complaint to the BBB in which she wanted Desert Sun Landscaping to pay her $100 to settle this dispute which is the $99 Angie’s List Big Deal price and essentially get all of the work my company did for her for free. Now she is saying she wants to pay Desert Sun Landscaping a $100 plus dump fees. I want her to pay her entire invoice. I do indeed feel this is something [member name removed] has practiced in the past and gotten really good at. I will definitely learn from this experience. I will continue to serve my customers with a high quality service even with this disappointing event. Any customers that would like to know more about this particular service please contact me and I will gladly answer any questions you may have. I will continue to stand on my Customer Service Grade. My main goal in working with any customer is that I want to help each person get what they want at a fair price.

I tried Desert Sun Landscaping as the result of an Angies List "Big deal" - $99 for 4 hrs of yard work - I had modest expectations due to the price - but hoped to avoid having to do the work myself. I was delighted - Mike returned my scheduling inquiry super fast, arrived on time, and was very friendly and professional - his crew attacked the yard like a swarm of bees and did a great job. I'm delighted and would recommend them. The hauled away the debris, and did a very thorough job of cleaning out all the leaves and pine needles - my yard looks awesome - making the Angies List "Big Deal" a super value. Just in time for holiday company to come visit and see how nice it looks. My only regret is that I didn't discover Desert Sun Landscaping sooner! I'll be sure to give them a ring again - even without the Angie's List special offer, I know I'll be getting a quality service.

Desert Sun supervisor during the entire process was at the site or available any time we needed him. He helped in the design and yet listed to all our needs to make the decisions. He made the job easy and enjoyable for us. Once the crew started he and/or his crew were here until the job was finished. The crew were as easy to work with as the supervisor. If we wanted to do modification they were dealt with immediately. The crew were hard working the entire day. They were on time each and every day. Both the supervisor and crew communicated to what they were doing and any changes in schedule. The supervisor responded to any email or telephone calls within 24 hours. Any changes or requests we had that were outside the first estimated job were handle and completed. We were happy with the final product and all the support we received
Description of Work: Desert Sun installed underground sprinkler system, poured sidewalks and steps, planted grass sod, installed large plant islands and planted flowers, shrubs, and trees, and laid decorative rock around the house and in the planters.

I was traveling outside the country for the beginning of September, and I needed someone reliable to mow my lawn while I was away. My next door neighbor had his home up for sale, so it was especially important that our lawn looked well maintained. They mowed and edged twice while I was away as agreed. I made the arrangements by telephone. I asked about how much the charge would be, and since he hadn't seen the size of the lawn at that point, I was told $30 or $35 each time. I expected that I would be billed the higher amount and would have gladly paid it. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I was billed the lower amount. Yet again Angie's List has steered me to a great company.
Description of Work: Mow and edge front & back yards twice.

Mike and his crew were wonderful. From the time they arrived they were professional and so experienced in landscaping. Mike picked out the perfect shrubs and flowers for all of my gardens. They placed stone in my gardens and even cleaned the street after the stone was gone. These guys worked very hard and I would recommend them over and over again! I have gotten so my complements on my landscaping. I absolutely love the look!
Description of Work: Complete landscaping with stone.

I have been using this service for lawn care for a couple of months now. Mike mows and trims with a weed eater. He always is pleasant and answers all my questions. They are reliable and nice folks to deal with. I originally found them on Angies List and I am so glad I did. I will continue to use them.

These guys did a super job for me, and I could not be any more pleased with my overall experience with them. I have always taken care of my lawn and yard, until last week. I broke 2 bones in my shoulder, so I will not be able to do much of anything physical for a few months. I was desperate to find someone fast that could take care of my yard, but where do you look when you don't know anyone that does this kind of work? Lucky for me I found Angie's list, and then found this company Desert Sun Landscaping listed at the top of the possible choices I could make. I looked through all of the companies listed, but was very impressed with the consistently high ratings, and customer comments made for this one. So I called them up to see if they could come over and give me a quote for doing my yard work. Mike arrived within just a couple hours, just as he said he would. I went over everything with Mike, right away I really liked his professionalism, and also their company's emphasis on customer service and satisfaction as their primary goal. As we agreed Mike showed up the next morning and did the lawn mowing for me. He did a great job with the mowing, edging, and cleanup, I couldn't be more pleased. Now that I found these guys I plan to have them do some sprinkler, tree pruning, and other yard work for me in the coming weeks. I want to say thank you to Mike and Mike for your professionalism, courteousness, customer service, and the great attitude you both have. Angie, thank you very much for this Great service you offer, it is something everyone needs a certain times. You help put confidence and trust back in the consumer, I can't thank you enough!
Description of Work: They provided SUPERB lawn care for me at very short notice. I broke my arm/shoulder just recently, and could no longer take care of my yard. Mike and Mike at Desert Sun Landscaping came to my rescue. Thank you guys!!

First note: the cost of service annoated for this project is VERY approximate, because I don't have access to the bills at the moment. Suffice to say his bid was the best of three. Mike and his folks were great from the first meeting. They took time to answer all my questions and were willing to reconcile any issues concerning cost and planned work. They offered to discuss changes or unexpected issues with me rather than make on-the-spot decisions without my consent. Very nice when money is tight! The lawn, the grading, the sprinklers were all fantastic and are working well. Mike even helped trouble-shoot a few problem areas in the lawn, and he educated me on the issues I'd have in my yard based on the underlying soil type. He's been correct so far. The yardwork they performed went great as well. They weeded, mowed, and edged. No complaints! Their guys installed the sidewalk on a few unseasonably hot days, and it dried too fast which lead to one major crack. Mike offered to fix the crack and he let me set the terms for cost. I said if he took the cost of repairs (sealant) out of the final bill, I'd be ok with that. We agreed and I'd have no reservations about hiring Mike's company for future work. His bid on my proposal was the best price for me, and he was willing to accomadate a few detailed requests and even offered a few helpful opinions along the way. This was important because I designed the yard myself with help from family/friends. His feedback and discussion improved the project.
Description of Work: They graded the yard, added sprinklers to an already existing system, installed sandy loam, sod, a curb around the back lawn, and a sidewalk that wrapped around the house. They also mowed and weeded for 2 months after installation.
