+ 0 moreThe owner was very responsive and professional. He came over for the measurement on the same day I called. I could tell he had years of experience doing this. His initial quote was a little high, but he was willing to negotiate. I didn't go with him at the end because I found a lower price bidder, but I believe I would not be disappointed if I had chosen Zvara.

+ 0 moreI contacted Peter on 11/30/10 and asked him if he would consult with us so we could install our own floor and he replied that he would and that he could come the next day. I was so happy. I also asked him if he would give me a bid just in case we realize that the job is going to be too difficult for us. He arrived as promised, gave me loads of tips and pointers and even said he could send his son over during our job if we needed more advice as we went along. He arranged for us to get a product necessary for the installation and basically provided a verbal description of the entire project so I can make sure we do this correctly. He also used his moisture meter to check our floor in several places and thought our floor was 'perfect' humidity for a great result. I don't know if we'll be able to do this job or not but at least I understand what we need to do and we'll at least get it started and see if we can do it. If not, we'll call Peter and have them come and install the floor and if we do that we'll submit a report for that work. Wish us luck! Update 12/9/10: Peter gave us a bid to install the floor along with advice for us to do it ourselves. Do to complexity of the job, time constraints and injuries by the do it ourselves we elected to have Zvara install our new hardwood floors. We were scheduled for December 22 but were ready and told Peter to let us know if something opened up in his schedule. On the 7th he let us know that if we were available on the 8th, they could install our 350 square feet. We were elated to get it done so soon. They showed up on time and worked quickly and installed the wood floors beautifully. They had to deal with a bathroom tile floor that was almost 1/2" higher than the wood floor - I'm submitting photo - it is fantastic how they managed that transition - so smooth you don't even realize it's going up in elevation. They cleaned up after themselves very well and did put up some protective plastic to keep dust from getting everywhere from the table saw.
Description of Work: Peter came to the house to consult with us as we are planning to install our own pre-finished wood floor but wanted to ask some questions and make sure we do the project properly for no charge. Update 12/9/10: Installation of 350 square feet pre-finished solid 3/4" tongue groove Tigerwood. in 2 bedrooms, 4 closets and a short hallway.

+ 0 moreI called the owner, Peter Zvara, who came by a day later to examine the job. He's a super nice guy who explained everything clearly. I received a quote from him by email the next day (around $2200) which I thought was very reasonable. Because of the complexity of this job, our interior designer suggested I contact another guy who works on the top houses in Puget Sound. His bid came in over at over $5K. Because of the positive review on Angie's List, I decided to go with Zvara... The wood had to be specially milled for our job and shipped to our state (we knew this going in), so they didn't do the actual install until a month later. What was especially helpful is that they worked around our schedule so their team (Peter Zvara's son and two co-workers) could do the sanding and finish stages while we were out of town. This worked out perfectly -- we came home and everything was beautifully finished and cleaned up. There wasn't even dust to indicate that they'd been there. We've had floors refinished before, but these guys surpassed anything we've had done in the past. We're really glad we ended up going with them.
Description of Work: We had Zvara remove a 130 square feet section of tile that was inset in our wood floor at the entry to our house. It was replaced with wood to match the surrounding areas. This was a tricky job because it required matching an unusual wood (quartered, 4 inch rustic oak) that ran perpendicular to maple. They then refinished the remainder of the large entry (a section 3 times this size) to make the old and new flow together.

+ 0 moreWe selected Zvara based on their reviews on Angie's list, the professionalism of the owner during the quote process and a fair, detailed quote. The Zvara team arrived on schedule to refinish the floors, finished on schedule and the floors look great! They also left the house very clean; the absence of dust was amazing. The owner, Peter Zvara, also really stands behind their work. A couple of weeks after the floors were completed, we discovered that the toilet, which had been moved during refinishing, had a slow leak which had damaged the floor. Peter was very responsive in having someone come out and take a look and get the floor repaired. Ultimately, the leak was traced back to damaged seals in the toilet tank. While moving the toilet for refinishing had probably been the straw that broke the camel's back in starting the leak, it was by no means the primary cause. Peter completely covered the repair of the floor, including repairing the toilet when it was reseated. I really appreciate the way that he took care of the problem and I wouldn't hesitate to use Zvara Custom Floors again.

+ 0 moreZvara got all A's from us. Peter made several trips to our house to get the key or show us color samples, always at our convenience, which was in the evening hours. He communicated by email and by phone, also; very professional and personable. He was always on time, as were his sons the installers. There was one small glitch: When the oak planks were delivered a few days early to acclimate to our environment, it was placed right in the middle of the living room instead of off to the side. In order to make room to store furniture in the living room, we had to move the wood, twice. Fortunately we didn't get any splinters, and forgot to even mention it. We booked the project back in February and paid a 50% deposit. Zvara could have started the project in April, but we were going on vacation and opted to begin in late May. The work was done swiftly but with great attention to detail. We especially love the dining room with the elegant design. The couple across the street, who have a house of the same vintage and also have oak floors, were as impressed as we were with Zvara's beautiful craftsmanship when we did our inspection tour. We were also struck by the fact that there was hardly any dust in our home from this project. We'd heard from friends who'd had their floors done that we'd come back to a mess, but that was not the case. Zvara left our home exceptionally clean and tidy. The next day, which was a Sunday, one of the Zvara sons knocked on our door to complete two minor details -- one of which we hadn't even noticed -- before we had a chance to point them out. Peter Zvara sent the invoice (for a bit less than I had expected) via email along with a data sheet on the stain and recommended maintenance. In summary, we're thrilled with our new and refinished floors. They are beautifully installed and crafted, and we are eager to show them off to friends and family. We appreciate the careful cleanup, as well. Now that the stinky carpets are gone, we can invite friends and family to our home again and will proudly show off our stunning oak floors. When we can afford to replace the wall-to-wall in the living room or elsewhere in our home, we will call on Zvara Custom Wood Floors.
Description of Work: Zvara Custom Wood Floors replaced the wall-to-wall carpeting in the family room and in the dining room with new oak flooring to match the existing oak flooring. They also refinished the existing oak floors in the entryway, hall, kitchen, breakfast nook, pantry, hall closet and powder room. The floors had never been refinished since the house was built in 1986. We are the original owners and have not had children or dogs living with us, so the wood floors looked OK except in the kitchen and in the closet, where a leaking pipe had caused some damage. More important, the family room and dining room wall-to-wall carpets, which were also original, were severely stained and odorous due to our territorial indoor cats. Peter Zvara, the founder, estimator and contact person -- and fellow cat caretaker -- said that they could seal the subfloor with shellac so the cats would not return to their favorite marking areas and to stop the feline smell. This service was also included. In order to achieve a seamless look, Zvara "wove" the new and old planks where they joined. Peter Zvara suggested a "picture frame" design in the formal dining room with mitered corners. He had a photo of a floor with that design. We liked that idea and had that design installed in the dining room. Another feature that we added were removable oak heater vents to replace the brass filigree vents from the hardware store. Instead of going fashionably darker or lighter for the stain, we opted for a clear "Swedish finish" stain that would show the varied beauty of the red oak flooring in our traditional home. The Zvara sons, who are the owners/installers, removed the baseboards and put them back in numbered order. They protected the living room, the counter areas beneath the cabinets, the stove and the upstairs with plastic sheeting while sanding. Zvara arranged for a plumber to re-seat the toilet in the powder room. We had to move all items off the floors to be added or renovated, except for the refrigerator, and we had the old carpet hauled away at our expense. We also had to pay for three nights' lodging for us and boarding for our cats while the final sanding and staining was done, for health and safety reasons. The Zvara service included cleanup and takeaway of all installation and finishing debris.

The only problem is that we only had a week before we had to move in, and most floor refinishing companies were scheduling out at least two months. I called Peter Zvara, owner of Zvara Custom Wood Floors, and told him about our situation. He told us that he might be able to rearrange their work schedule to fit us in before our moving weekend. We were so pleased with his professionalism and friendliness. He came out the same day I called to give us an estimate, and the work started two days later. We felt incredibly lucky to find someone so professional and competent to do the work for us on such short notice, and the price was reasonable. The floors look beautiful, the work was top quality. We highly recommend Zvara Custom Wood Floors.

+ 0 moreIt went really well. We had just had a previous experience with another company which had gone very poorly, but got Peter's name from a group at work. We thought Peter and his sons were great. They worked with us on getting exactly the look we wanted. They ensured they used high quality materials. They showed up on time and got the job done on time and came in under the original bid. I was nervous because they were sanding down the exisiting hardwoods, doing some repairs and replacements and refinishing and I was not sure how they would not get the dust all over my house. I was amazed by what an excellent job they did and how meticulous they were about keeping the house clean and dust free. I came home to new floors that looked great and no mess, it was a very good experience. The only thing I was a bit dissapointed with was that they were supposed to follow-up to fix a small issue that happened when they put the fridge back and I did not hear back from them. But when I called they were great about getting it fixed, so was pretty minor.
Description of Work: We had to have our hardwood floors refinished after another company had done a very poor job installing them.

+ 0 moreI was very pleased with Peter and his sons. Since my project was small, he was able to squeeze me in during other bigger projects. His estimate came in nearly $800 less then the other Angie's List estimate. He gave me a date range to start and stayed in contact as the date got closer. It was a three day project and went very smooth. His sons were professional and the floors look better then new. Because refinishing hardwood flooring is messy work, they did a lot of clean up and I was impressed. Of course, there was a light dusting on all surface areas but that is too be expected. I would certainly recommend this contractor to anyone...outstanding work.

+ 0 morePeter (owner) was very friendly, prompt in communincating back to me and did exactly what he said he would. He was flxible scheduling and his crew was on time to complete the work. The floors look great - just like new. I did find two eyelash size hairs that had settled into the very top of the finish but that could have happened when the furnace came on after they left. Cleanup was generally good, on eminor thing was that they forgot to rehang one of the doors. I would defintiely usa Zvara again and would recommend them.

+ 0 morePeter and his sons are the epitome of professionalism in every thing they do. Peter came out personally to do a quote for us, which he emailed to us the next day. It wasn't the cheapest quote, but we went with them because we trusted him and were appreciative of the time he took to explain everything to us in detail, as well as the as experience he obviously has in the field. We needed to save money so we ended up ripping out the old carpets and trim ourselves as well as replacing the new trim after the job was done. Any/all changes to the quote were made easily and fairly, and Peter was very prompt in sending us updated versions via email. The floors downstairs had been previously done but needed holes patched and a new fir vent installed (which is gorgeous). They used second hand fir for the patches and they blend in perfectly. The upstairs floors were covered in layers of gray paint which apparently took the guys a lot of work to get through but they too look great. They even did the stairs by hand, and so far, that's what we've gotten the most compliments on in our house. We are truly thankful to have found a local, family owned business to support that is also a top notch group of guys to work with! We highly recommend them! (Note: we got a $150 Angi's list discount and a free floor cleaning set too!)

I felt very comfortable leaving them alone in my home for 3 days. The floors looked beautiful after the job was complete. My only complaint was a new 8 inch dent in the front of my refrigerator. Peter apologized and provided a floor cleaning kit, but I am still left with having to repair the dent.

+ -1 moreI got five bids for hardwood floors and they were all either very expensive or didn't seem like they'd do a good job. I chose Zvara based on their reviews, their references (though the first ones I got were their business associates) and felt that our house would be relatively neat. In their quote, the removal and replacement of floorboards and the toilet was included. I checked their business license and it was suspended. Peter Zvara was surprised and a little defensive when I mentioned it, but a few days later, thanked me for catching it and assured me it was a mistake. I spoke with his insurance guy who assured me that they were insured. They were flexible when I had to change the date of service and performed it in a timely manner. We were surprised when we came home to a mess. There was a light layer of sawdust all over our house--even the upstairs. There was still tape and plastic in places. The carpeting had about an inch of finish on it where it met the hardwoods--I still haven't been able to get it out--it's crunchy, but clear. There were a few places where saw dust and hairs were caught under the finish..mostly in the entry way. The back of the toilet tank was cracked. Otherwise, the floors looked nice. Peter came out and was immediately defensive about everything and didn't offer to fix anything. In fact, he said there was no way they broke the toilet (the crack was clearly new--he conceded this later) and that he wouldn't replace a 20 yr old toilet. He also said he wouldn't clean our carpets (I didn't ask him to, I just showed the stain.) His response was, "Well, what do you want?" I felt as if he thought we had an angle--we didn't. He eventually offered us 25% off the bill to replace the toilet and for the mess. I felt like I wouldn't be ale to call him in the future if we had any problems. The work was fine, the mess and lack of professionalism was unacceptable. If amends were not offered, then the score would have been much less.

+ 0 moreZvara flooring helped to totally transformed our house into a home! The new flooring makes our home look warmer and more welcoming. We did all the demo before the installation. As we were demo-ing, we discovered that our subfloor in the kitchen was higher than the rest of the house. We called Zvara, not knowing what to do. Without hesitation, they said they'd come out and remove it for us. Before installing the flooring, they removed the subfloor - and did a great job! We really appreciated their flexibility. The team at Zvara is extremely skilled and truly does beautiful work installing hardwood flooring ? they are detail oriented and perfectionists ? which is greatly appreciated when investing in hardwood flooring. The next time we need hardwoods installed (in a future life, in a new house) the only team we would call is Zvara.

+ 0 moreWith 30 years in the flooring industry I am very aware of what issues can occur with hiring a flooring contractor. I chose Zvara from a recommendation of a neighbor and after speaking with the owner I felt he and his employees were good to their word. They arrived on time, finished the job without any issues and we have moved back into the house on time. Knowing how other companies use subcontractors, which an owner has very little control over, Zvara uses their own employees (some are family) and I see the quality of workmanship in my floors to every little detail. Thank you Peter for a great job.

+ 1 morePeter had the wood delivered to our home about 10 days before his start date so that the wood would acclimate. Peter and his sons started demolishing and installing the new floors on schedule and returned 2 weeks later to do the finish as we wanted our painters and kitchen installers to complete the kitchen. We then had to leave our home for 10 days as the floors were stained. Overall, everything went well and we will be asking Peter to come back and put Australian cypress in another bedroom, and although the floors look great, we want to change the finish to a glossy finish, as we think it will show off the beautiful grain of the wood.
Description of Work: We had our main living space (living room, kitchen, dining room, office and entry) completely redone. Peter and his sons removed all the old hardwood and carpet, then installed wide plank Ipe (Brazilian walnut) throughout and did a Swedish finish. They also removed carpet from 2 bedrooms and installed prefinished Australian cypress.
