Poor quality work overall. Nice people and the price seemed competative but now I'm stuck with crappy floors and I paid $7,368.00. The quality of the staining and finish is poor. The color of my new dark finish is uneven and the floor finish is thin and uneven, allowing the cracks between the boards to show the old light wood in some places. The new flooring is nice and even, but my original floor, which is about 80% of the work is terrible. The seems between boards are rough to the feel, and the color from area to area is off. I'm not talking the difference between board to board, which should very, I'm talking visible brush strokes accrosss areas of the same room, and visible stain batch mismatches. I moved out initally to have them sand and finish floors, and then had to move out again - and pay for a hotel - to have them come back and redo uneven color. After they came back and refinished the worst rooms, the color is still uneven and the finish is patchy and inconsistant. My floors look like crap. In all I had to move out twice and I need to have them redone if I want to sell my house. The color and finish is not uniform - something that any professional floor company should do the first time. I am completely unhappy and disapointed. I do not recommend these guys.
Description of Work: Had existing worn hardwood floors refinished and staned dark, and had additional matched flooring installed.

Response from ZVARA CUSTOM WOOD FLOORS
We were very surprised and troubled by this report. This was the first time in the four months since the job was competed that we heard from the customer that they were not pleased. Upon completion of the project, they stated there were happy with the outcome, and we had not heard from them until just recently when a balance of payment reminder was sent to them. We have contacted the customer and are actively working on a solution. Our company is committed to providing the highest level of workmanship and professional service, and our goal is to have 100% happy, satisfied customers.

Our 30+ year old wood floors were damaged and looked really old and ugly. I didn't think it was possible, but Zvara Custom Wood Floors made our floors look new again. They were very responsive and professional from our first contact through the whole process. Peter Zvara was very easy to work with even when my husband decided he wanted a different finish after all. They came back out quickly and made the change and we are thrilled with the results. They were fair priced, punctual and completely cleaned up after themselves. I would definitely use their services again.

Zvara came out in late October to give us an estimate for some water damage on our bamboo flooring. He came about a week after it happened and he suggested that we give it 2-3 months to dry out to see the true extent of damage after the wood had fully dried. He said it would then be much cheaper to just replace the few boards that may be left with damage rather than replacing the whole section then. We waited until after the holidays and contacted him again near the end of January. The floor had definitely dried out and there was only a little damage left. When I spoke to him in January, he immediately told me that they were extremely busy and would be at least 6 weeks for the work to get done. Because we felt good about him and his advice from October, we were fine waiting (heck, it had been 3 months already, what's another!). After not being able to schedule an immediate time for him to come and review the work to be done, he called back about a week later to see if he could come and take a look while he was in the area on another job. Unfortunately, we were unavailable at that time. We haven't heard from him since. We were very disappointed with this poor customer service because we appreciated his advice at the beginning and he seemed very knowledgeable. It would have been more professional to say we were outside his service area or too small a project (if those were the reasons we didn't hear back).

We were extremely happy with the work that was performed by Peter Zvara's crew. There was a snow storm on the day that the crew was scheduled to perform the services. Peter arranged for the crew to work over the weekend, Sat & Sun, at no extra charge. The crew came in on time, and removed the existing floor materials and then were able to get most of the hardwoods installed on the first day. On the second day the crew came in on time again and completed the work in a matter of hours. They managed to save the existing baseboards and mounted them back in beautiful condition. The workmanship was exquisite and they were the most professional crew we have ever worked with. It''s been a month since we had the hardwoods installed and we can't find any flaws with the work performed. The entire experience was what we hoped for and then some. This was money well spent. We were fortunate to have Peter's crew perform the installation for us. We wish all of our home improvement work could go this well.
Description of Work: The job entailed the installation of hardwood in the living area, the dining room, powder room, and kitchen. The installers came in and performed a demo of the existing carpet and hardwoods. They moved the major appliances in the kitchen and also dismantled the the baseboards from all areas and also removed the toilet in the powder room. Once the demo was completed, they installed the hardwood that we picked out.Upon completion of the installation, the crew then reinstalled the toilet, moved the major appliances back, and mounted the baseboards again.

Peter Zvara was professional from the start, arrived on time to the estimate appointment, and worked with me to select the type of flooring that would work best for my house and budget. He was thorough about answering my follow up questions. The price he quoted was completely reasonable which was terrific. He was even able to get me a nice discount on wider planks. The wrong plank size was delivered by mistake but he recognized the mistake himself and swapped them out without any issue. The installation was done exactly on time (and I think ended a half or more day early if I recall correctly) and the cleanup was thorough. The floors are GORGEOUS. They are the nicest hardwood floors I've ever seen. Definitely exceeded my expectations. I absolutely recommend Zvara, feel lucky that I found those guys.

I contacted Peter Zvara and scheduled an appointment to check out the water damaged section of flooring. The date was August 25th, 2011. He gave me a couple of options for the repair including sanding and refinishing the existing floor or replacing and refinishing the damaged area. Peter then checked the moisture level in the floor and found it was too high to perform the repair. He suggested using a fan and rechecking the floor at a later date. As far as the repair went , I said I was flexible and would take whatever date was available. I was told my job would be scheduled between larger projects. The replacement option sounded the best, so I requested a time & materials estimate which I received via e-mail. After the receipt of that e-mail, dated August 29th, all future follow up contact regarding rechecking the moisture level of the floor and attempting to schedule a firm service date were initiated by me. When between 6 and 8 weeks had passed in the drying process, I called for a recheck. The response was I'll call you later this week. He never called and never rechecked the floor. When I called to inquire about scheduling, the response was we're really busy, possibly through the holidays. My last phone conversation with Peter was just after Christmas. He said that the end of January looked promising. On January 30th (which is the end of January in my book) I sent Peter an e-mail requesting a firm time frame for scheduling the repair. The response, in reviewing our business plan we no longer offer small repair services unless we have done the original work or refinishing. We did this to insure the quality control of the final product. My apologies if this has caused you some inconvenience. Needless to say this is very unprofessional and a total breach of trust. Unfortunately it took 6 months for me to realize that I needed to review my business plan.

As promised and as expected. Peter also demonstrated great flexibility in order to work around the schedules of the other trades involved in this remodel.
Description of Work: Following our excellant experience we had with Peter Zvara a couple of years ago, we called him back to assist in a major remodel of our kitchen and family room, creating one large 'Great Room'. His people did an excellant job of letting new flooring into additional and demolished areas and then refinishing the overall area to the same quality level as was the case before ... there is no apparent transition between renewed areas and the existing floor and it all looks great. They know what they are talking about ... and they walk their talk. Great people with which to conduct business.

Peter gave an estimate for hardwood flooring. He was punctual for the estimate appointment. He was informative and very low pressure. Peter was willing to accommodate us because of our time limitations but there were delays not related to him. So we weren't able to presently use him, but will in the spring or summer. He impressed me enough to enter this report even with out the final services.

From the quote to the actual work, Peter did a great job. He was timely, responsive and friendly. He provided good education on the care of the floors and helped with the stain colors. The floors turned out great! They look brand new. Peter's team cleaned up after themselves wonderfully and we haven't had a huge problem with dust like we were dreading. I would definitely use Peter for future projects from refinishing to floor repair or installation.

My wife was the one who actually spoke with them. She was very comfortable with them. Peter was very professional; his quote was professional and he was professional. He was very friendly and in addition to that he made some suggestions in terms of the way the wood looked. He went and installed it. Perhaps we did not use the right kind of wood towards the door. We never would have noticed. He pointed it out so that it could be replaced. We appreciated his attention to detail. If needed, I would take a quote from him again in the future.
Description of Work: I used the services of Zvara Custom Wood Floors. They are doing the work right now. They quoted me $12000 for the work. We had hardwood and carpets. They had to pull out the carpets and eventually left new wood. They replaced some existing wood and refinished everything.

Prompt and very reasonable estimate. Peter is very knowledgeable and offered several options in choice of finish coating and spent a lot of time discussing these to which would be best for our needs and for what reasons. This played a major role in our decision to use Zvara. They were flexible in scheduling that met our time lines. Arrived on the day scheduled and completed the job on the day promised (total time 3 days). This was amazing in that there had been an accidental breaking of a water line (brittle plastic pipe) during the bathroom sanding that necessitated replacement of 100 sq foot of flooring before they could do the rest of the job. Water line break also saturated a carpet in the room below which required professional extraction and drying. Zvara covered the cost of this without hesitation. Should also note that they completely sealed the working area from the rest of the house such that there was no sanding dust anywhere when they left. When the job was initially completed we discovered a small area in the entry where the finish coat was a little rough. They returned within a couple of days to touch-up. This improved the appearance but still was noticeable. They then returned and reapplied another coat of finish to the entire entry and hall. Final results were a floor stained to the exact color we wanted and a beautiful finish!

Our floors are top nailed so they sank all the nails and filled the holes. They removed the quarter round around the edges of the floors and after finishing put it back and caulked the seams. They put three coats on our floor and it looks beautiful. Peter's sons did the work and we are really happy with the results.

I contacted several installers with important questions I had about using Pergo laminate flooring (something Zvara doesn't even sell or install) in a below-grade basement scenario. Peter took the time and answered all my questions clearly and authoritatively, even though he knew it wasn't going to lead to any sales for him. That kind of professionalism and service attitude is rare and I just wanted to recognize Peter for that. THANKS!

We had carpeting in two bedrooms that we wanted removed in order to restore the original fir floors underneath. Peter responded promptly to my call asking for an estimate and was able to do the estimate within a few days of my phone call. He based his quote off of what he saw from a corner of the room where we lifted up the carpeting and warned us ahead of time that the price could fluctuate depending on what's found when you eventually pull up all the carpeting in the room. The price he quoted was only a few hundred dollars less than the other quotes we received, but we liked how he was knowledgeable and experienced, giving us information about how fir ages and colors in interesting ways, and pointing out where the original floors and ribbon inlay in the living room of our house ended and transitioned to more modern flooring in the kitchen. Right before moving out of our house so they could do the work, we discovered that there was pretty bad water deterioration in one of the rooms when the carpeting was pulled up: one of the boards was actually white at the edges as if it started rotting. We worried how much this would affect the price. When it came time to do our floors, the crew arrived promptly and were courteous. I then got a call about an hour after they started working asking that I come back and take a look at a problem in the main bedroom: there appeared to have been a false wall at some point so that there was about 3 feet of wood that was varnished in a completely different color, plus a gap about half a foot wide so that the floor boards on either side of the gap would not match up. Peter's son explained that we could either rip up all the boards and place new ones so everything would match perfectly or their preference, which he added would be cheaper and less labor intensive, would be to fill in the gap with wood and make a transition strip. He pointed out that with the ribbon inlay in the living room, this kind of transition strip would fit in, almost like it was intentional. When he said that the additional cost would just be the cost of the wood plus 2 to 2.5 hours of labor (at $80/hour) I agreed to that option. The finished floors look amazing! The transition strip indeed looks beautiful and professional. Also, the water spot in the second bedroom came out-- you would never know that the wood was rotting in that area. Although Peter seemed like he was concerned that we would be upset about the dark color spots on the floors, we know that such coloring is the natural bruising of the fir wood and love the character that it adds to the floors. With just about $500 more than the original price, we are extremely happy with how the floors turned out, given those rather big, unexpected problems.
Description of Work: We received a prompt, free estimate for refinishing the floors in two bedrooms. This included removing carpeting from the rooms, sanding (including hand sanding around radiators), and finishing with the Swedish finish. Restoration of the floors meant having to repair two unexpected issues that were not identified in the estimate due to their placement in the room: a large water stain that had some deteriorating wood, and a large section of floor with a gap where there had been a false wall.

Peter came soon after we contacted him and took measurements and talked with us about our job. Because Zvara does not have a show room we went to a distributor to pick out the hardwood we wanted. We were able to bring large samples home to see what we liked. We emailed Peter our choice and he sent us a bid. We set up an installation date and Joe and his crew arrived on time and completed the install in one day. Peter was always very prompt and professional whenever we had questions or concerns. If we decide to do more hardwood we would certainly go with Zvara again. We love the new look.
Description of Work: The old vinyl flooring was replaced with hardwood in our kitchen area. The old flooring was removed and disposed of and new flooring installed. We took out the dishwasher but the company moved the refrigerator. The installation went smoothly and Joe, who did the installation, did a great job.

The fir hardwood floors in our home were damaged by tenants during a short period in which we were forced to rent out our home. It's amazing how much damage tenants can do to a home in a short period. These antique floors in our house have been there for ninety years, but somehow the tenants trashed them in two years. We were not excited about the prospect of having them repaired or replaced, as we wanted to maintain the original look and feel of the house. We had a few hardwood floor companies come out to perform estimates, and only Zvara Custom Wood Floors was willing to repair them. The other companies wanted to install a new hardwood floor, that wouldn't look right in our old craftsman home since the rest of the house had not been "modernized". Needless to say we were very happy when Peter Zvara said he and his sons could repair our floors using materials that match the original. We had large indentations in the fir floor where the tenants bed posts dug all the way throughout the finish and into the wood, and we had a 1/2 inch by 7 inch gash in the hallway where they somehow managed to puncture the floor. Peter came out to do the estimate the same day that I called them, and his son Joe came out to start the job about a week and a half after we agreed to have the work done. Joe, Peter's son, did the work and the floors look like new. The damage in the hallway is no more, and you can't even tell anything happened. They replaced the wood. We decided to have the damage in the bedroom filled in and sanded, instead of replacing the wood, since the original boards were long going the length of the room, and would be difficult/expensive to replace. The floors look very, very nice when everything was finished, and the original charm of the home was preserved. They also did a very careful job of cleaning up afterwards. Our house was freshly painted inside, so it was obvious what, if any, dirt, scuffs, or debris was left behind. They only scuffed a few of the baseboards, which is completely understandable, left a few scuff marks on the exterior of the front door, and there was dust in the basement (below the finished floors) that we had to cleanup afterwards. There was virtually no dust or dirt in the area where they did the work, so they did an excellent job of cleaning up afterwards in my opinion. Everyone at Zvar Custom Wood Floors is very professional, and I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Joe Zvara and crew repaired the damaged antique fir hardwood floor in our home with materials that match the original. The fir floor, ~400 sq ft, was then lightly sanded and sealed with Glitsa Swedish finish. They also put a polyurethane top coat on ~250 sq ft of antique oak hardwood in our living room. The floors look absolutely incredible, and the old world charm of our house was preserved.

Our experience with Peter Zvara incredible. Peter came out promptly for an estimate, was able to work with our extremely tight time schedule, and was enthusiastic but realistic about (what seemed to us) a daunting project. The floors took two days to do, and the guys (Peter's son + one other worker) sanded the floors and put on 2 coats the first day, and buffed/put on the 3rd coat the second day. They turned out very, very nicely, and we wholeheartedly recommend Zvara. We obtained two other bids, also from reputable flooring companies, and all bids were similar in price, but we loved Peters enthusiasm and knowledge about the floors, and how he really went the extra mile to accommodate us.
Description of Work: We scraped two layers of linoleum off of around 550sf of flooring from our 1911 house. The wood had been painted over in one room, and two other rooms had incredible amounts of glue (from the linoleum). We also had a 2x3 area that needed flooring to be installed (a heater had been there). Zvara sanded and refinished all the floors, and did such a seamless job of installing the 2x3 space that you can even tell there was missing wood in the first place. The 'new' floors literally turned an eyesore into the focal point of our house. We couldn't be happier!

Peter Zvara, the owner, arrived to give me a free estimate. He asked several questions about what I wanted, took laser measurements, and answered several of my questions. He explained everything thoroughly. Once we scheduled he was quick to respond to emails and phone calls, and revised the quote until everything was exactly what we agreed. A few days before they were due to come out to do the work, he called and asked if they could come a day early (which caused minor scheduling panic), and we were able to accommodate this. They arrived on a Monday to do the dining room install, and were completely finished in just 4 hours. I expected there to be some construction mess, but Joe left the garage where he'd been working cleaner than when he started. We left early Wednesday just as the crew was arriving. We heard from Peter on Friday to let us know they were finished and we could move back in at any time. We chose to wait an extra day and come back Saturday morning. We were absolutely amazed at the difference. Our floors were gorgeous. The matte finish made them glow, and they look so much better than before. The dining room hardwoods blend so well with the existing hardwoods, you'd never know it was new floor, or that the old floor wasn't new also. I had expected it to be dusty, but it wasn't nearly what I thought. More like a week's worth of dust on knick-knacks and tables, rather than the construction dust I expected. The walls were clean, and they'd obviously covered kitchen cabinets/counters. The plumber they contract with wasn't nearly so clean and had left residue from the toilet wax ring in several places on the bathroom counter and sink. Overall, it was an excellent experience. I have already recommended them to some friends, and definitely recommend them to you. The photos show our severely scratched and stained hardwoods near our kitchen slider and how they look refinished. I've also included the dining room picture frame with the inlaid oak air vents.
Description of Work: Tore out carpet from dining room and installed 150sf red oak flooring with picture frame pattern to match existing hardwoods. Refinished 370sf existing hardwood floor in kitchen, hall, bathroom and foyer w/ satin Swedish finish. Replaced metal air vents with inlaid oak vents. Removed and re-installed molding in dining room; worked around existing molding where they did refinishing. Hauled away the old dining room carpet. Cleaned up thoroughly!

It was a real pleasure to work with Peter, his sons, and crew. I recommend them without reservation. Everyone was pleasant and easy to work with and thoroughly professional. They did the job faster than I thought was possible and left no mess at all to clean up. I'm very pleased with the quality of the work. My floor looks beautiful -- better than I thought possible. They did a masterful job of staining to make old and new flooring match. The price was more than I had hoped (as always), but competitive with all other estimates I received. Because the quality of the work is so good, what I'll remember in the years to come is not how much I spent, but how beautiful the floor looks and how glad I am that I had Zavra refinish my floors.
Description of Work: sanded, stained, repaired, and refinished old and new oak flooring

This contractor was prompt and professional in all communications on email and on phone. He set a date we needed around my work schedule and confirmed just prior then they were on time and performed all services in the time estimated. The invoice was prompt after the service as well. We love the quality finish on the floor and would use them again in the future without a doubt. There was little odor after we aired out the house a couple days and the dust was minimal.
Description of Work: Hardwood floor refinished in hall, kitchen and dining room.
