My entire interaction with Jeff was via phone. My husband and I both work long hours, and it's difficult to leave during business hours to meet contractors. Jeff promptly returned all phone calls, lots of detailed messages back and forth. Jeff came onsite for the estimate and gave a ballpark number. (The 62" stump was surrounded by concrete and the root system was not visible.) A different stump removal company told me it would be impossible to bring any equipment around the narrow elevated walkway, around a sharp corner, up the concrete steps. After removing the patio, we hired Jeff (again via phone) and he came onsite to do the work. He called me with an updated number, and called again a few hours later asking about the extent to which we would like the roots removed. I opted for some additional work to remove as many roots as possible. The original bid was around $350 - we ended up going up another $150 to ensure that no roots would be rotting and sinking under the new patio. Happy that he called rather than leaving roots in the ground or just leaving a bill with no explanation. Came home and discovered both stumps gone, a large tidy pile of roots, and not a bit of mud on the walkway & driveway around the house. A trip to the dump revealed that nearly 700 lbs of roots were pulled!! Would gladly hire Jeff again in the future. Have already recommended him to the neighbors.

Jeff was very prompt in responding to our request. The old stumps were in tight spots, between some older shrubs, a boulder and a fence. His unique hand held machine made quick work of both the old maple stump in a tight spot and an old fir stump under a large Rhodie. Jeff cleaned the worksite and broke up larger pieces for yardwaste or firewood; we will spread the rest of the sawdust around for mulch.

Jeff was very responsive. I contacted him over the labor day weekend. He came out to take a look at the stump the next business day and provided a bid via voicemail. I called him back and he was able to do the job that day. The stump ended up being much larger once he got just below grade, but he still did the job at the quoted price. I did get other bids, which were *slightly* lower...but my gut said go with Jeff. Glad I listened to my gut. Jeff is prompt, professional, and does good work at a fair price. If you need a stump removed, I highly recommend him. ...Now what to do with 3 cu yds of wood chips...?

Replied to my quote request message right when I was told he would. Said he would come out the next day and take a look. He said he would quote and perform the task if requested. He called to give us a heads up that he was coming, right on time. Showed up on time, talked through our options, gave us a good quote and did the job. The whole thing took about an hour and a half. This included cleaning up the mess (not removing the chips, but piling them up where the stump was). Very professional and did a great job.

Although Stump Grinding Northwest is a member of Angie's List, he was also recommended by another and local tree service company. Jeff arrived on time and finished the job in a day and a half. I had numerous stumps and bamboo too remove. Jeff, the owner, was very professional, and knew his business. The equipment that he uses allowed him to grind the stumps and bamboo which were on a side of a hill. He was on time and did not wast anytime. He returned the next day to complete and job and he arrived early and finished by noon.
Description of Work: Jeff Taylor has been stump grinding for 18 years. Because of his experience, he has selected equipment that allows him to grind stumps that may be more difficult for others to get to or refuse to do. I wanted a large area of bamboo roots removed which he did. He ground the roots lower than 12". He also has a hand held grinder that allowed him to grind hard to get too stumps because they were on a side of a hill(my back yard). I had about 20 stumps including bamboo removed. I appreciated his professionalism and willingness to tackle our yard. His quality of work was the best.

This company was recommended by a client of mine in Bothell WA. She says: "We had a stump in our back yard that was not entirely ground by the service that removed the tree. We were in a hurry to remove the remaining stump and called Jeff at Stump Grinding Northwest. He was out the following day to look at it. It was a VERY large tree to begin with and the remaining stump was no small task either. Jeff looked at it calling it a "whopper of a stump" and gave me a quote. It was a little painful to hear but I knew that it would be pricey going into it. Jeff even said he knew it was expensive already to remove the tree and he hated to say it would be that much more to remove the remainder, which I appreciated. But, he also said he could get to work right then and there. I agreed and he quickly got to work. He was done with the work in about an hour and left our property neat and clean! I would highly recommend him to anybody looking to get this kind of work done fast and efficiently and at a fair price."

Jeff at Stump Grinding Northwest not only did excellent work , but was one of the few contractors I spoke with who was willing to take on this difficult job. Most stump grinding outfits I contacted don't have hand-held equipment, which was the only way to remove this stump given its location at the top of a narrow set of concrete steps. Stump Grinding NW's price was reasonable given the amount of labor involved, and I found Jeff, the owner, to be prompt, reliable and efficient.

He did exactly what he said he was going to do at the price, and on the day, that he quoted. The wood was neatly stacked. I don't know how courteous he was in person, because he let me mail him a check afterwards, rather than having me change my schedule. So I didn't get to meet him, but he's a good guy in my book!

We called Jeff the first time to come and grind out a stump in our front yard. That same day he was willing to do the side yard stump as well. He took great care to not affect the fence and the bricks, but still went over and above to hand chop the roots out. He cleaned up the area once he was done. Absoloutely great customer service. We then decided to drop another very large tree and needed him to come out the next day to grind the stump. He was able to come and the price was again excellent.

I was referred to this company by another highly-rated tree service firm on Angie's List, that doesn't do just stump grinding. I called Jeff and left a detailed message of what I needed. He called back within 2 hours, and we discussed the project. He offered to come by and look at the stump to have a better idea of the situation. His schedule permitted him to stop by the next day. He called me in the morning with an approximate time of arrival. Then called again when he was headed out from the job he just finished, to let me know he was on his way. He explained that the stump didn't need to be ground lower than the normal 6" below grade, given where I was thinking of planting a new tree (near the stump, not in the stump location). We talked about where he would bring in his equipment, to avoid damage to all my plants near the stump. He got out his tape measure and measured clearances. He determined a path that would just enable his equipment in and him to use it, yet not damage my plants. He gave me a quote, and I decided to have him do the job. Lucky for both of us, he had time right then. In the end, he ground down the stump to about 12" below grade, and cut out the roots in a wider circumference than he typically would do. This extra effort enables me to plant not only on the stump itself if I want, but left a wider circle around the stump for plantings. I thought this was very generous of him. There are lots of wood chips ready to be spread around my garden -- free mulch, as my gardener says. The chips are around the now-ground stump. Jeff blew off the plants that had gotten sawdust/chips on them. Jeff is very pleasant, knowledgeable and professional. I would use him again if I have another stump to be ground, and would definitely recommend him to others.

Called STUMP GRINDING NORTHWEST INC on Monday morning and talked to a woman who took my contact information and said she would have Jeff contact me. Jeff called about an hour later and I described the two stumps and location and he agree to visit the next morning on Tuesday to give me a bid. Jeff showed up on time and started sizing up the stumps and measuring them and punching some number into his calculator. He had some concern about how deep the pine tree roots went down and I said he could give me a price to go down a foot and then reprice if there were more roots. The total price was $425 to remove the stumps. I asked him how long it would take and he could not give me an answer. I asked how much one stump would be to remove and he said $325 as he had a minimum charge of $175.00 to remove one 24 inch stump and $3 per inch after that. The math didn't seem to add up to me and I declined his bid. While on Angieslist, the companies info states they don't charge for travel time, it seems he has it indirectly built travel and failed bids into his minimum charge. I had previous stump grinding done at a much better price which I have reviewed on Angieslist. I would like to say Jeff is a very professional and the reviews on Angieslist show that, but his business model conflicts with my knowledge and common sense. I am now looking for more bids hopefully based on time to complete the job and not by the inch. Just to update. Found another stump service to grind by the hour both stumps for $250.00. They accepted an hourly rate plus travel and I got exactly what I needed, no need for a guarentee.
Description of Work: Needed two old stumps that were previously ground last year, ground again as more of the stumps have been unearthed during some excavation for a side sewer project. One stump was a fir tree that is mostly dug out and exposed with an area of 5 feet by 3 feet that needs to be ground. The other stump was a three headed pine tree that has a mat of roots in an area that is 4 feet to 5 feet across sticking about 6 inches about the ground. Needed both ground down so later a trench could be dug. Wanted all debris left in place with the hole unfilled to save cost. Both stumps are accessible.

Response from STUMP GRINDING NORTHWEST INC
Member stated my visit very well and honestly. My only rebuttal is this: He felt the numbers didn't add up and that I was charging extra for travel time. All contractors in business have a "minimum". My minimum is $175 as he correctly stated. Then depending on the scope of the job it is an extra $3 or $4/in for whatever is left over. I quoted him a price at $3/in if he was to do both stumps but had to charge him $4/in if he was only going to do one stump because he wanted these stumps ground as deep and as thoroughly as possible. Perhaps the reason he needed these reground a second time or got them done inexpensively originally is because the company didn't do a thorough job. My work is guaranteed. If I have to come back for any reason I do so free of charge. I've had to come back to 5 jobs in sixteen years of business because I had missed something. I feel that is a pretty good indication of quality work the first time. One other thing that does not complete this picture is that no one else has provided a better bid price. I explained to the member that I was forced to stick to my price because these were Big stumps (4'-5' in diameter) and that he wanted a very deep, thorough grind so he could install a drain. I explained I was not trying to be the cheapest stump grinder but rather a very thorough one because this job required extra attention. He may still get a cheaper price, but when it comes to stump grinding as in so many other things, you get what you pay for. Thanks for the opportunity to share my side of the story. Jeff Taylor Owner.

Response from STUMP GRINDING NORTHWEST INC
My business is stump grinding. This job included digging up a raised bed and moving the dirt elsewhere, cutting down a tree and shrubs, grinding the stumps, hauling the debris to the dump and potentially spreading multiple yards of dirt and/or bark. I told her I could do the work but that it's not really in my normal scope of work, therefore I would not be the most competitive bid... again, I'm a stump grinder. I told her I'd give her a bid because I was there and this way she'd have something to compare with if nothing else. When I bid a job that involves work that is not my normal scope I tell the customer. In fact I even break out my estimated costs for each part of the job so my potential customer can see how I'm bidding each task. This way I'm as transparent as I can be for the customer. I'm glad to see that the customer would hire me in the future and that I was professional, prompt and courteous because I pride myself as such. Thank you Angie's list for allowing me to explain why my bid for this particular job was as high as it was.
