Had a broken cabinet door. They first tried to repair it, but then just built me a new one. The process took longer than expected, but they were very nice, and bottom line, the new cabinet door is perfect.

This was a big project for us. I had looked at replacing our existing sofa and loveseat for about five years (endless trips to Crate & Barrell, Pottery Barn) but I just couldn't find anything I liked as well as the existing pieces, which we bought from Ethan Allen when our kids were young and which had been subject to endless wear by kids, cats, sunlight, etc. There were no glitches. I picked out the fabric after perusing many samples; Lanae, the woman who assisted me, was helpful with technical details but didn't try to steer me one way or another. They were picked up on time, and three weeks later they were back. They look fabulous, like a brand new sofa and loveseat. The slipcovers fit tightly and the trim is beautiful. I realize I spent as much on this project as I would have on new furniture, and I certainly wish it had been a bit less spendy. But I just didn't feel like the big box stores offered me enough options, so I decided to benefit from the large fabric selection and "buy local." It worked for us; I think we can count on another fifteen years with these furniture pieces. And I'm happy not to have contributed a sofa and loveseat to the landfill.
Description of Work: Q.A. Upholstery rehabilitated a sixteen-year-old sofa and loveseat for us, rewrapping the cushions and creating custom slipcovers for both the sofa and the loveseat.

Repair: about a two week delay, about two weeks in their shop, about two weeks back, got what we expected. Estimate on bigger job also seemed to take weeks, but we didn't use them for that. Good scheduler and office / phone setup; pickup and delivery service was great.
Description of Work: We had Ballard Refinishers repair and lightly refinish an "antique" sideboard, at least a family heirloom, previously held together with duct tape. They did a marvelous job, picked up the piece and delivered it, looks very nice and made sturdy repairs, for about $500. They had first come out to look at our kitchen woodwork as we get ready to sell our house; we got an extensive and expensive professional estimate that was in the thousands, just not worth it.

I took cushions into the store and told them my problem. We discussed options and they told me it would be ready in approximately 5 days and was done sooner. Job was done as requested and now the couch is much more comfortable. I had requested change due to hip problems and they went over several different options with me.
Description of Work: Needed to have foam replaced in couch cushions. I picked the foam from display room but also requested an inch of memory foam to be added to top of cushion.

The whole process went very smoothly. They finished a little bit later than estimated, but that was primarily due to my making changes (with which they were very patient!). They did a great job on the cabinets, and they look beautiful. Neil even took some time to show me how to cope baseboard, so I can do it on a diy project I have planned. I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Refinished existing base cabinets, finished and replaced cabinet doors, and installed crown molding in very large kitchen. Created custom window casings, liners, and molding, and installed. Matched cabinet stain to an existing furniture piece.

I brought a door from my kitchen cabinets to the store. They examined the scratch across its surface, and agree to repair it. The scratch went across several layers of the door, so it was not a trivial repair. They did a great job of filling it and matching colors. It was returned ahead of the promise date. The price was very fair.

Ballard Refinishers quoted exactly how many days the job would take -- 2 days on-site plus 9 days in their shop -- and lived up to their quote. They provided an exact price quote at the beginning of the job, and lived up to that quote too. They came to my house, quickly removed the balusters to take them to their shop, where they use a continuous-flow stripping tank that doesn't raise the grain. They couldn't remove the newel posts, so these and the handrails were stripped in-place. They returned in 9 days, and completed the remaining stripping, sanding, and lacquer application during the next 2 days, as agreed. I'm a perfectionist and an amateur woodworker, with a critical eye for detail. The revealed wood-grain patterns are beautiful, with not even the smallest blemish. A very fine professional team, each with a specialization -- colorist, lacquer spray, etc. These experts have been working at Ballard Refinishers for many years. In this age of cheap mass-market furniture, etc, I am delighted to pay these dedicated artisans a decent living wage.
Description of Work: Strip & Refinish Antique Stairs Railing. Note: There should be a separate Angie's List category for "stairs carpentry & refinishing". Ballard Refinishers came to my house, stripped many layers of paint from the antique Douglas Fir handrails, newels & balusters. They precision-sanded all of the individual pieces, then applied many layers of a clear lacquer finish, with a slight tint recommended by their colorist. The result is absolute perfection. They turned a new baluster on their lathe, to replace one that was missing; it matches so perfectly that I can't guess which baluster is the new one. Ballard Refinishers is apparently the ONLY established business that provides stairs refinishing to this level of perfection. Yes, the price appears "high" and is a bit of a shock (hence my "B" rating on price). However, I wanted a guaranteed top-quality result so I went with the professionals. I have no regrets.

We provided Ballard Refinishers with photos of the damage to our new dining table top from our cat. They provided an estimate and time frame for repair. In place of the lacquer finish they recommended a polyurethane finish. They estimated that they could do the job 8 weeks out, and they arranged to pick up and deliver the table. 3 weeks after the estimate they arrived and picked up the table. 5 weeks after that they returned the table. Pickup and deliver were extremely punctual, and the finished table was fantastic.

I contacted the company via email with my project (I attached photos and gave measurements and specifics). They gave me a prompt friendly reply with a preliminary quote based on the photos (with the caveat of potential "if necessary" costs to be added later). They said to just swing by the showroom to look at fabrics, no appointment necessary. I found a fabric in the showroom that I liked, and was able to bring home samples. On Monday, I called with my choice, and right away they set up an appointment for the couch to be picked up. The movers (both picking up and dropping off) were very friendly and professional. Then I just waited. The whole process took I believe exactly two weeks to get the couch back. They were communicative the whole time, calling with questions and letting me know when there were additional things that needed to be done, and what the costs were. I was even able to get a revised quote via email. The only complaint about the whole experience is that the "as needed" costs ended up adding about $1000+ to the original estimate that I was given (reminded me of going to the mechanic!). But the couch is definitely gorgeous, and I'm very pleased with the work. The broken leg (which I had kept) was repaired and reattached, and they said that the whole couch will now be sturdier than ever. Now I'm thinking of going back to them to get a chair reupholstered to match the couch!
Description of Work: I have a 45 year old sofa that was hand-made for my parents, a good sturdy piece of furniture that has been re-upholstered once (about 20 years ago), and had a broken leg (from the last move and was generally needing to be reupholstered. It was worth re-covering because you can't beat a perfect nap-couch!

A speedy estimate was given from a photograph of the table. We scheduled the work for the following month. They did a wonderful job on refinishing the table! The only issue is that it took a bit longer than expected. The delay was because more time was required for the many coats of finish to cure properly. But the result was worth the wait!

Excellent. I sent a picture of the chair by email and described the break. Within a few hours someone got back to me with a ballpark estimate but said they would need to see it for a more accurate estimate, which was reasonable. I brought the chair in, they gave me an estimate (not too far off from the phone estimate) and completed the repair within a week. The quality of the work was excellent. I can't detect the breaks in the wood at all. The cost was exactly what was quoted to me beforehand. It wasn't cheap but I recognize that such a repair involves quite a bit of labor.

When we purchased this home, the white-oak cabinetry was still in great shape, just yellow and dull with age. And because it was high-quality cabinetry, we couldn't justify tearing it out and replacing it with the cherry cabinets we really wanted. Ballard Refinishers worked with us to come up with the exact shade of stain we wanted, and when the job was finished, a designer friend commented on our "beautiful cherry cabinets." We are very pleased with our "new" cabinets, dining room set, and desktop.
Description of Work: Ballard Refinishers refinished and re-stained an extensive amount of cabinetry in our floating home--kitchen, dining room, living room, office area. They also refinished a dining room set, replacing a high-gloss black lacquer with a subtler matte finish. They took cabinet doors, drawers, and dining room set to their shop, minimizing disruption and mess at our home. They also coordinated construction of a complicated, curved built-in desktop, using an ultra-skilled furniture maker affiliated with their shop.

We had terrible damage done to our antique Duncan Phyfe sofa when it was moved to Seattle, so we had two problems to solve. One was finding an expert to asses the damage of the sofa and estimate repair costs for our claim, and, second, restoring our sofa to a sound, usable, attractive piece of furniture. Seth Emtage made an appointment quickly, after we spoke, to examine the sofa damage and write up an estimate for the cost of repairs we could submit to the moving company. This quote included removing all the upholstery and padding on the sofa so the interior, bare-bones frame could be examined and repaired. He also estimated the cost for the complete reupholstery including the new padding, contouring, cushions, fabric, and exposed carved wooden parts. At that time we decided to go ahead and recover two other pieces reupholstered which and not been damaged in the move. The final result was beautiful. The frame of the Duncan Phye was as solid as a rock (no squeaking or movement when we sat on it), the new contour padding, especially around the large arms was very nicely done, and the wooden legs and cartouche were repaired so you couldn't see where the damage had been. The bergere chair repair was beautiful as well, and carving on the legs, that had been scratched and badly worn, was rebuilt so you couldn't tell it had been damaged. The springs and padding on the bergere were generous and nicely contoured, and the chair felt stronger and more sturdy so my husband can sit on it now. The stuffed side chair had a whole personality change. With the new fabric, sculpted padding on the arms and back, removing the skirt, and adding new attractive, turned wooden front legs, that Seth suggested, the chair had a whole new personality, which had been pretty frompy to start. Seth arranged for photographs to be taken of the Duncan Phye for our claim, and gave us a CD of excellent photos documenting the breakage. Whoever did the photos really took time to document the breaks and damage very well. This was a huge help for our claim. To save in cost, we were also able to find a large selection of fabrics from a remnants room with a good selection of tapestry and embroidered textiles. Working with Seth, and everyone at Queen Anne Upholstery, was pleasant -- everyone was helpful, pleasant and professional. Seth scheduled the repairs so the furniture was finished before our next upcoming move to California and before Thanksgiving holiday - yes we had to move again. We could start out fresh in our new location, with attractive and usable furniture and not have to move already damaged pieces which would have confused our claim if further damage had happened on the new move. The people at Queen Anne Upholstery restored our furniture, and our faith in finding good craftsmanship.
Description of Work: Assess damage to frame and wooden parts on Duncan Phyfe sofa, and write an estimate for repair. Repair a badly broken frame of a Duncan Phyfe sofa, apply and contour new padding, reupholster, repair three broken legs, even out wood finishing. Reupholster wooden framed bergere antique chair, repairing damaged carving on legs, new springs and apply and contour new padding, even out wood finishing. Reupholster a stuffed side chair with new contour padding and cushion, new turned wooden front legs, and even out wood finish. Photos were taken of the Ducan Phyfe frame to document the damage to the frame for a moving company claim.

They were incredibly prompt: I e-mailed them pictures on a Sunday evening detailing the work showing the problem. The next morning I got a call saying that they could do it and a rough estimate of cost and how long it would take. Three weeks later (on schedule) I got an e-mail saying it was ready. It looks like a brand new table! We can't tell where the repair was done. The table had a few scratches and scuffs - They cleaned it up, got rid of scuffs and you can barely tell there is a single scratch! It is just gorgeous! We would highly recommend them and plan to take in other pieces in the future.

At every point during this process, Ballard Refinishers has been professional and competent. No matter with whom I speak, I am treated with respect. Everyone is just so nice! The people responsible for picking up and redelivering my table were not only careful with the table, but they were also very careful of my other belongings in the house, taking extra care to not nick a wall or another piece of furniture.
