Excellent experience. I originally contacted Emerald Tree Service via e-mail through Angie's List and that seemed a bit of burp, as it took them a while to e-mail me back. After that initial contact though, all communication was prompt and clear. They gave me an estimate and schedule the work just a few days later. A day after that they sent me an invoice with an amount that was identical to the estimate. We are very pleased with the work - the trees look great! Clean up was excellent as well.

They arrived near the appointed time. Consulated with us often to make sure they were doing as we wished and cleaned up after they completed their work. There was no damage to other plants and trees and the clean up left our yard and drive way looking cleaner than when they arrived.
Description of Work: We wanted several things done: trim two holly trees in our front yard; reduce the size of our lilac trees for new growth; thin and try to reduce the height of a regular Japanese maple tree; shame our lace leaf maple off of our garden pathway. Also wanted a large Fastia transplanted .

We called the company for the free estimate. We wanted to be present during the estimation since there were some explantion to do and questions. So they gave us the time on the next day. I came back home 30 minuteds before the appointment time. I waited and ewaited. There was no phone call. Tere was no phone call on the next day either. After 3 or 4 days later, there was a message on the answering machine. They still wanted to do an estimate if we hadn't done the job yet. We pick this compnay because the good report on the list. But we were so disappointed.

Called for an estimate and they returned my call same day. They also came by my house the same day to estimate the work. They showed up on time on the scheduled work date. Had three guys perform the work. They did an awesome job trimming the lace leaf maple - several neighbors have commented how beautiful it is. When they were done they cleaned and swept front yard. Would use them again.

I called and left a voicemail asking for an estimate on the job. He called back the same day and later visited the trees and emailed formal estimates -- one for trimming and one for removal. I waited a few days because I got busy. I called back and left another voicemail. He emailed back saying the job had been scheduled. I left another voicemail asking them to call me before beginning work. I live in another city and the day after the scheduled day I got a call in the morning -- the work was moved back a day. The worker discussed details with me in a helpful way. I emphasized that I wanted care taken with the plants growing underneath the tree. The invoice was emailed later that day and was slightly less than we had discussed. Later when I visited I found the cutting had been done well and the grounds were clean and undisturbed.
Description of Work: Removed a large leader (about 1/3 of the tree) from near the base of a large Big Leaf Maple. Also removed a broken, hanging branch from about 50 feet up in a Douglas Fir.

The owner responded to my inquiry within two days, came out the same day and gave a bid, and answered all of my questions when I called. He was $450 lower than my other bid and was going to make better ecological use of the tree. Four 25' lengths ended up being used for lumber and taken away free and the chips were going to be used by city parks or someplace similar. A crane was needed to do the delicate work of removing the lengths of tree after limbs were removed. It was in the driveway and there was very minimal damage to the lawn. The company did a very good job of clean up. The stump is tiny, very close to the ground. There was a small problem with the edge of my driveway. The owner returned the next day to check it out and reduced the bill by $50 to compensate. The owner had to rent the crane so the price was quite reasonable.
Description of Work: We had to have a very tall destressed tree removed that was extremely close to our house and the neighbor's house (long story) and had been discussing the removal for 3 years. I had gotten bids a year ago and after a wind storm recently decided that I had to go forward. The original low bid was $1600 but the company took too long to get back to me (weeks) each time I called. It turned out that the tree (a fir) was 125 feet tall.

They were very professional, and reasonable. They knew a lot about their trees. The estimate done for our hedge trimming was a bit more than what I wanted to spend, so we didn't have it done. They were reasonable with the other trees. They also hauled a tree stump and that was a bit of work. I sent them an e-mail to get our Japanese maple trimmed and some of our other trees. In less than an hour, he replied saying that they had a truck out there, and they would come out today. I was very happy with them

Everything was done through email. He honored the Angie's List coupon which saved me 5%. I emailed him to ask him to bid on the removal of my tree. He came the next day while I was at work and I had a bid the following day. I asked him how much additional it would cost to grind the stump and it was only $125! We negotiated the price and I outlined it in an email which he then adjusted for taxes and sent me the estimate. I agreed to pay that amount and he told me that he'd put me on the schedule. He said because I live so close to his truck lot, it would probably be done soon. I think it was two days later. I came home and the tree was completely gone. All that was left was a pile of sawdust. They did a great job in a very muddy part of my yard. The invoice was exactly what we'd agreed upon. Just a great transaction all around. I would like to hire him again to watch them prune my fruit trees which have been neglected for years. I feel confident I would learn a lot with little fuss. This company was great!

They did a great job, though I was expecting a lesser price. I didn't try to negotiate. The estimator came the day I called and service was performed the next work day. Start time was scheduled for the morning, but they didn't show until the afternoon. Both the estimator and the lead on-site listened very well, communicated well, had good humor and, in the end, did exactly as I asked. Overall, not a bad experience in spite of a couple of flaws. I'd use them again, though I'm not sure I'd recommend them when there's a risk they'll show up late without calling.

They did a great job. I called in the morning and the owner came out to my house in the next couple of hours. He called me back while looking at the tree and we agreed on a course of action. He has an Arborist who works for him who came by later that day to trim it up. He did a great job shaping the tree and removing excess foliage. He not only cleaned up all of his mess from the work he did but also raked all of the leaves that were covering our patio! We couldn't believe it.
Description of Work: I need someone to come out and figure out what to do with an overgrown magnolia tree with lots of problems. I didn't just want someone with a chain saw to come out and take it down, I wanted it done in a way that was sensitive to the overall shape and health of the tree.

Emerald arrived promptly. They were very professional and knowledgeable. They answered all of my (very concerned) neighbor's questions. We discussed what needed to be removed and that they would be sensitive to the tree's health and aesthetics once they began trimming. There is only so much they can tell from the ground. I left for work and returned home to find the tree cleared as I asked. The trees also looked great - the shape and aesthetics were maintained. I am an avid gardener and I was pleased to see they really understood and cared about maintaining the health and natural shape of the trees.
Description of Work: Emerald removed significant limbs and trimmed a mature cedar tree that was hanging over my roof in order to provide enough air movement and clearance. The tree was located on my neighbor's property, and they also ended up trimming and clearing another cedar from her roof the day they cleared my roof.

We were pleased from the beginning of our connection with Emerald Tree Service. Mike, the company owner and estimator, arrived promptly, answered all of our questions in detail and gave us a bid we felt very comfortable with. The three men who did the job, arrived promptly on the day they were scheduled to. They were enthusiastic, careful, neat and were pleasant and cheerful as they carefully avoided damaging any garden plants on our property or the neighbors'. The logs were placed in a neat pile, as were the wood chips which we asked to have 'dumped' in two separate places. The three men left a neat and clean work area with no damage to driveway or garden. We strongly recommend this company. We do not give praise lightly. We cannot give this company ENOUGH praise. Mike gave us extraordinary additional help in coping with the handling of the wood and the wood chips.
Description of Work: A huge three- trunk maple tree was carefully cut into fireplace lengths and wood chips. In addition, I asked to have a nearby smaller maple tree that bent over the parking area removed. The arborist, decided, on the job, that the best way to tackle the giant maple was to hire a crane which arrived within the hour. The fireplace length logs were placed in one area on our driveway; the woodchips neatly nearby, as asked.

Very professional tree cutting team worked fast and efficiently. Mik, the team leader is also a certified arborist and made meaningful suggestions about thinning and trimming our Liquid Amber so they would not create multiple "leaders" at their tops. Very impressive!
Description of Work: Mike and his crew removed, cut up and hauled away three evergreen trees (two spruce and one cedar) along the front of our two story house, trimmed two Liquid Amber trees in our planting strip that were beginning to get into the overhead wires, and removed and ground the remaining stump from large flowering dogwood that had previously been removed. The latter was a difficult job because the stump had been filled with concrete making its removal and grinding even more of a task. All debris and branches were removed, ground up and hauled away. Three men worked the good part of a day on this job.

After leaving a message on the answering phone, Mike showed up the next day to inspect the work. I have a number of trees in/near the yard and we discussed them. Mike stated he was not an arborist, but that one worked for him. He pointed out possible problem areas and noted that one of my trees was so close to house that even cutting it back might not keep the animals off the roof. His approach was decidedly low-key. He e-mailed me a bid around 12/11/07. The men showed up, unannounced, and did the work on 1/7/08 but that was after a couple of previous schedules where they did not make it. I also received a bill by mistake. The job itself was well done with a good clean up. There was one slight hitch of a cracked tile on my roof, that did not compromise the integrity of the roof, but its appearance a little...If I can find a small missing piece it can be repaired. The job took about 3 hours (to my estimate since I was not there when they arrived) and required two men.
Description of Work: Trimmed back two huge cedar trees whose branches were lying on the roof of the house, and removed dead wood. This involved climbing into the trees with power saws and removal of debris. The house is located on a hillside and this makes the job more difficult.

I had to call twice. The first time I called was the end of the week before Labor Day. They said they would come out the following week to do an estimate, but that did not happen. So I called the first of the following week and Brian, one of their estimators came out to take a look. He emailed the estimate to me.
Description of Work: I did not have Emerald Tree Service do the work. This was an estimate to cut down a columnar flowering cherry, and a flowering pear--both not exceptionally large trees. I felt that this was too much to charge for a small job. ($654)
