One man, in this case, Ean, did all the cutting on the frames inside of the house. He is truly a craftsman and was very detail oriented. He cut in 3/4th inch space on every window frame in the house. Ean's partner Eric worked with him on each window and together they made a team any window company would be proud of. They were both meticulous and never left a window until it was perfectly finished including inside caulking and outside caulk, outside trim and washing. Both Ean and Eric helped me to choose the primed outside brick mold that looked the best on the house. They always arrived on time and on the days they were scheduled to be here. I was very comfortable with them in the house and also left them alone on many occasions when it was necessary. Each day they cleaned everything and even vacuumed the rooms they worked in and locked the doors if I was gone. I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: The choice of Einar Johanson Company turned out to be the best decision I could have made. I was looking for windows and two sliding glass doors for my two story home. My home is brick on two sides and cedar on the other two sides and has a huge deck with with a narrow outside stairway to the top, so it was a bit of a challange. I called the Johanson Company and they made a date to come to my home for a bid and arrived on time. Doug was the salesman that arrived. He was informative and polite and he listened to what I wanted. He showed me samples of several different manufacturers windows. Some were local and some national companies. I chose the Simonton windows which turned out to be very high quality. Doug explained to me how the windows in the brick walls would be finished on the outside vs the finish on the cedar walls. He also explained that I could have the windows put into the wall spaces available and timmed with brick mold or I could have the men cut into the window frames to slide the windows in for an inset fit. The new Simonton windows I ordered were Lo E3 Glass, therefore, they were thicker than my old ones. I definitely wanted my frame cut in for what I personally considered to be a better fit. Doug further explained that his company used only two men on each job unless extra help was needed. This naturally would take a little longer to complete the job. Ean and Eric arrived at my home a few days later on schedule. Ean walked straight to the most difficult door and said that if it was alright with me he would like to start on that door and do all the difficult windows first and then move on. We talked a few minutes and he asked me again if I wanted to cut into the window frames or not. I said, definitely yes. So they went to work.

I needed to have our heating air ducts wrapped. I actually had a handyman come out first, but it was going to be a while before he could come out. Its a good thing, too. I then called Einar Johanson and they explained to me that I could get a PSE credit/rebate for a portion of the cost. I scheduled an appointment after verifying with PSE that they do rebates (this was for 2011 by the way, rebates may be different this year). I asked the PSE person if Einar Johanson was on their list of insulators (which is important if you want a rebate--you have to use a PSE approved company) and the guy said yes, and that Einar Johanson does a lot of insulation work for PSE customers. I was so happy. I got a better price, a PSE rebate and it was scheduled earlier than if I had gone with a handyman. On 2/1/12 when Einar's technician(s) came out, they were so very professional, polite and took the time to answser my questions and to explain to me a couple of things I might not be aware of. They did the work within the time frame I was told, they didn't rush through things, but they were certainly effecient. The last thing they did was to ask to see our furnace so he could tape around it to finish the sealing work. They also provided us with a Carbon Monoxide detector that PSE provides for customers who insulate/seal ducts. He offered to install it, but I wasn't sure where my husband would want it, so I told him we will install it later. He gave me some tips/instructions re the best place to install it. I can not stress strongly enough how Professional, Polite and Nice they were. I was very impressed. I am looking forward to our window install and will certainly rate that job on Angie's List as well. I think they are great and I think I am lucky to have been directed to them. Their prices were very reasonable (and they did all the paperwork for the PSE rebate); they were knowledgable about all of the PSE offers for rebates, they know how it all works; they obviously are smart and hire really good people; their front desk and specialists you talk to on the phone are also professional polite and nice. I tend to ask a lot of questions and a lot of times I get someone who is obviously irritated with all of my inquiries. But NOT with Einar Johanson. They were never rude or short. I would be very surprised if anyone could do better. But of course this is the only duct work/insulation work I have ever had done. But I have worked with a lot of other contractors and service providers. This company really shines.

As noted above, Einar called the day before to confirm the appointment. We had spent some time clearing out cupboards and closets and shifting furniture so that they could access the walls. (The insulation goes into 1" holes drilled at the top and bottom of the walls at something like 14" intervals.) The two workers arrived right on time and complimented us on our preparation work; only one or two pieces of furniture needed to shift a little farther than we had them. The workers began promptly and were careful to cover things with plastic tarps to protect them from plaster dust during the drilling. The holes were filled with wooden plugs and then spackled by the Einar crew. The crew used their shopvac to clean up afterwards. The walls still needed a wiping down afterwards but that wasn't unexpected. They gave regular updates on how it was going and finished more quickly than we'd anticipated (the total job was about four hours). The crawl space went particularly quickly even though they put a vapor barrier down and insulated the heating duct in there as well placed insulation on the roof of the crawl space/beneath the floor of the kitchen. They also confirmed that the space was (still) rat-free; hurrah! We decided not to have the work done on the garage (insulating the ceiling) because we had realized that this space is open to the rest of the basement; the insulation would've blown all over. We discussed how we could enclose the space so that it could be insulated at a later date. (It will involve some carpentry work so it couldn't be done that day. The workers were very polite; asked where they could park, if they could use the bathroom, etc. The one complaint: We have old plaster-and-lath walls with some cracks. A few of those cracks were worse after the Einar crew had finished the work, perhaps because too much insulation was blown into the space. I should stress that the cracks were already in the walls and they just need some fresh spackle and paint to repair.
Description of Work: Einar came out and gave us a bid for blow-in insulation in the walls of the main floor and above the basement/built-in garage as well as for insulating a crawl space. Their quote was good and the estimator seemed to know his business so we scheduled an appointment (sadly something like six weeks out). Because we have steel siding on the house, the blow-in insulation had to be done from *inside* the house. And, because we have knob-and-tube wiring, we had to have an electrical inspection to make sure that the insulation wouldn't end up catching fire. (The things you learn about an old house...) It took a while to hear from the electrician and get that appointment scheduled but he arrived *early* (but not too early) and the inspection went smoothly; he even offered some bonus advice about some half-finished wiring the previous owners had left upstairs. The insulating crew (two very polite young men) arrived promptly on the day scheduled (after calling the previous day to confirm) and they proceeded to insulate the walls and crawlspace though not above the garage for reasons revealed in the next box.

Overall, the work done was acceptable. The estimator was really helpful, but the helpfulness stopped there. The guys who came to install the insulation in the crawlspace were professional and seemed to do a good job. They used two different types of materials to insulate our water pipes under the house. I think they ran out of foam tubes to cover the pipes and wrapped the rest of the pipes with fiberglass insulation (which has a slightly lower R value). Just seemed like poor planning on the company's part. The real problem was with one of the guys who came to install the insulation in our attic spaces. Two guys came and one was super professional and respectful. The other let me know immediately in a most rude manner that he would not take his shoes off in our home and he did not offer other alternatives, like wearing booties or putting down a tarp until I pushed back several times. We don't wear our shoes in our home, and having a contractor come in and refuse to take their shoes off or make alternate arrangements is unacceptable. We are fine with contractors wearing booties or putting down tarps. We've had 7 other contractors in our home over the past 3 months either doing work or giving estimates and they all had no problem removing their shoes or wearing booties/ putting a tarp down. In fact, most of them did so without our needing to ask. I was When I called the company before our appointment date to find out about the precautions they take when drilling holes in our walls on the inside, I had to call them 2 times and leave detailed messages in order to have my specific question answered. The need to call multiple times and leave detailed messages to still not have my questions answered directly was the trend when trying to determine what type of lead testing the company would do when I told them we wanted to cancel insulation intallation in the vertical walls. They said they could come out that day and do a lead test and if it was negative, they could proceed with insulating the vertical walls that week. When I asked what type of lead test they did, it was a home test kit type test that is not recommended as a legitimate way to rule out lead in your home. So I opted not to accept such an illegitimate test in order to rule out lead in our home with a 6month old baby in the house. (As you may know, lead dust can linger for years after home renovations where lead paint/ products are disturbed, and lead poisoning is a serious issue for kids 6 years old and younger).
Description of Work: The estimator came out last fall and was really helpful in providing information and an estimate. Because of the other Angie's List reviews, we chose Einar to insulate our home over 2 other more expensive contractors. We had them reinsulate our crawlspace and attic spaces. We were going to have them insulate our vertical walls (which were not insulated before), but decided against having them insulate the walls since they'd have to drill from the inside of our home (because we have aluminum siding), and we have a 111 year old house and are worried about lead paint toxicity with a 6 month old baby in the house.

We have a two car attached garage with two bedrooms above the garage which are always colder than the rest of the home. I contacted Einar Johanson and three other companies to give me an insulation bid and for professional advice on what they think should be done. Our garage is sheetrocked so I needed guidance on what could be done. When Mark came to have a look and provide a bid, he examined the ceiling of the garage, probed it in a few different places, and concluded that there was plenty of room above the sheetrock to blow in the insulation. Mark explained to me how his company can drill holes in the ceiling and blow the insulation in. The method by which Mark examined the garage and how he answered my questions assured me that he knew what to look for and knew what he was talking about. His bid was very reasonable and in the ball park of what I was expecting. Since I was getting bids on the garage insulation, I decided to also get bids on having insulation blown into the attic. Mark provided a bid for blowing insulation into the attic, insulating our skylight, shielding three can lights that needed to be shielded, and venting a bathroom fan through the roof. Mark's analysis of the work that needed to be done was in line with what I was expecting and was consistent with a couple of other company's bids that I would later get. Mark's analysis and opinons and Einar Johanson's good reviews though helped me select Einar Johanson for the job. The bid form was well written and I knew exactly what was to be done by looking at the bid. They showed up on time on the day that we arranged to have the work done and they finished everything in one day (actually done by 2:00 PM). Everything from getting the bid to getting the job done was done as well as I could expect. I would use this company again in the future when needed.
Description of Work: Fiberglass insulation blown into the attic to an R value of 49. Skylight frame insulated in the attic with batt insulation. Insulation blown into the ceiling of garage to an R value of 38. Bathroom fan vented through roof.

They were always professional, courteous, and prompt. My calls were always returned in a timely manner and when I called the main office number, someone always answered. They completed the work on schedule. The price seemed very reasonable, especially considering the company's long years of experience. They handled all of the paperwork that needed to be submitted to Puget Sound Energy for the $600 worth of rebates we received.
Description of Work: They came out to give us a free bid beforehand. Then they installed insulation under the house, wrapped the water pipes, wrapped the heating ducts, and put down new plastic barrier ground cover.

It started with the rep they sent on site to check out the project and talk to us. He was very helpful and helped us understand the types of windows we might want and how to make a decision and gave recommendations. The project seemed quite difficult as we had lead paint which had to be protected against and the wnidows were from the 1940s and the way they were installed was, I guess, a bit of a pain. The contractor who worked at our site was super patient and dilligent and even though it took longer than he had originially thought, he just kept working and the finished product was really fantastic. The difference it made in our heating bill at the time was also fantastic. After the new windows went in, it really looked like a different house. Would definitely recommend them.

We were happy with the work and the price. They'd replaced a couple of windows for us in the past, so we knew what to expect from them, and also they had the product which matched other windows in the room, so we didn't look at other installers. The only problem was with one garden window, where one of the corner seams hadn't been welded quite properly by the manufacturer. The corner seam had what looked like a crack - not a functional problem, but it didn't look good. They had to make a couple of trips out to apply something over it, and then to sand it out smooth. It looks good now that it's finished.

Johanson was recommended by name by two of the bidders for our new heat pump. They gave me a bid to blow cellulose insulation into the uninsulated walls of our 1956 2300 square-foot house. The bid was $1026, after calculating a PSE rebate of $200. A few days after the bid, I was called back informing me that PSE had increased the rebate to $400, which reduced the cost to me to $826. I scheduled the job for 8/10/2011. The team showed up promptly, but the truck was too large to negotiate the dip at the foot of our driveway. We rescheduled for a smaller truck on 8/12. The truck showed up on schedule. One of the two installers was sick that day, so the other had to do the entire job alone. He scrambled pretty hard and managed to finish in the allotted time. He was very conscientious and did a good job, including cleaning up afterwards. I am entirely satisfied with the job and would recommend Einar Johanson to others and use them again myself.

After having an energy audit done, we found out that our natural gas utility would give us a rebate for getting our heat ducts wrapped. We called the utility, and they provided us with the names of two companies. The first company provided a quote over the phone without looking at the ducts at all, he just asked for the square footage and age of our house. The person providing the estimate merely said, "If other needs arise, we'll talk about them then." At that point, I figured I'd go with the second bid if it came anywhere close. The second bid, from Einar Johanson, was $100 less than the first bid. Mark from Einar came out, spent some time looking at what we needed, then went over all the options. He also provided bids on the other items that the utility provides rebates for, and gave us a bid on finishing the wrapping of our water pipes as well (the former owner was a bit unfocused on the DIY projects). Because the bid was so low, we decided to have the water pipes done as well. The guys who did the work arrived on time and did a great job. We have no complaints at all and plan on using them in the future if needed.

I had three other estimates, but decided to go with Einar Johanson since Tom Gleichman was by far the most detailed in explaination and detail and took quite a bit of time measuring and discussing the issue of possible lead paint on outside and government requirements. I had three oher estimates, one who never got back to me and the other two not being able to really give me the quailty and look we were after and two not mentioning the lead paint issue. Tom got back to me very promptly with estimate and details, Because Einar Johanson has a great reputation and stand by their work and due to Tom's ability to accomdate our needs and wants we went with him. He gave us a time line and said that the installers would come and re-measure which they did. They installed all four windows in less than a day and cleaned up after themselves. We love our new windows and they not only look in character of house but open easily. A very positive experience and they guarantee their work.
Description of Work: Replaced four cottage style windows in our 1909 house. Two windows 34" X 62" and two windows 44" X 62". The windows are vinyl with bronze exterior and white interior and insulated and include screens and easy opening and closing. The large windows (both on second floor) open top down as well as bottom up. Our old large windows were wood frame and due to being on weather side of house the wood warped making windows difficult to open. The other two windows had no insulation making room chilly in winter (also weather side of house)..

Estimator came out, and was very knowledgeable about PUD (our local Electric Utility) rebates and installation requirements. He was thorough and made recommendations and was on time! I had 2 other competitive bids and went with Einar, no regrets, the work crew was punctual, professional and courteous and left no mess. I was amazed with the difference in my attic, I am looking forward to a warm winter, best part is the PUD picked up half the bill and I qualified for an additional $200 promotional savings, so I basically got around $1400 of insulation for under $600 bucks, it was a no brainer. The vendor was solid through the entire process I would recommend them to anyone, not one glitch.

It took over three years for them to complete the job. One window in particular was an octagon window that they measured incorrectly but still attempted to install. It was crocked and when they cut out the old window, they damaged the siding. The windows let in cold air and my heating bills have increased since the window installation. The caulk they used on the outside is tacky so all the dust and dirt sticks to it. Once the dust and dirt adheres to the caulk, it seems to be permanent! When I contacted them and asked them to fix the cauk, I was told they had put enough money into my job and wouldn't do any more. I was very disappointed with this company and wish I had gone with the another company that actually had a much lower bid.

They did a good job. Their price was good. They brought trims ahead of time, so that I could paint them. Erik was the one who did the trim on the windows. He did an excellent job. It was a pleasant experience from the very beginning. There were no complications from the company. The workers were very nice. They told me what they were going to do and they did it. They cleaned up everyday. They put carpets in the house and didn?t get awry. I had to remove furniture?s away from the windows. It went very smoothly. From the beginning, from the salesman to the person who did the job, with whom we dealt with did a good job. When they were little late, they will let you know or they were right on time. It was quite a big job because it was fourteen windows and a patio door. It was quiet a bit of work. I got the wrong screen door with the slider. They contacted the company and got a new screen. There was no problem at all. There was a little fault with the windows and they did that at the same time. I would use them in the future. They also did attic insulation thirty years ago on this house. They did a good job then and I stayed with them.
Description of Work: I used Einar Johanson Insulation & Glass to put new windows. They came last year in November. They put trim on the windows.

It went very well and we are very happy with the result. There crews were very detail oriented and answered all of our questions and cleaned up every day. We interviewed three companies that had high ratings on Angies list and Einar Johanson was very competitively priced. We highly recommend them!
Description of Work: Einar Johansons crew removed all of our old windows, cut back the siding, installed new windows with a nail fin and added trim over the nail fin. The thoroughly caulked all of the windows inside and out. The also removed our entire front door which included 10 windows and installed a new front door and three windows.
