After trying to have my key copied at the hardware store, I found out that it needs a chip to actually run the car. Bulger had the right key, and the knowledge to make sure the new key would work. Thanks, Bulger!

Our house key was stolen from our cleaners' office over the weekend. First thing Monday morning I called Bulger and explained the situation; they said they could probably fit us in between other jobs sometime that afternoon. They called me back mid-morning and said that they had a couple of guys available, and would it work for their guys to come by right then? Yes, I said, and they showed up a couple of minutes later, and had everything done in a bit over an hour. As always: very tidy, very professional, very polite. They're the kind of provider I wish I had more need of, because they're so consistently great.

The person who provided this last service was excellent. In fact, he fixed locks that a previous person told us would be impossible to repair and that the entire locks and cylinders would need to be replaced. A previous person had told us that also. The third person was much more skilled and he fixed the problem, with the work keeping our locks functioning smoothly to this day. The small amount the previous 2 people had done resulted in minimal improvement, which lasted for only a few weeks.

We moved into a new house and needed new keys and locks. From beginning to end the process was easy. When calling to ask questions about the process, the person I talked to was informative and able to schedule an appointment within the next day. The locksmiths arrived on time, listened to and answered my questions as well as gave tips for improved security. We paid a little more then expected, but that was the result of purchasing new lock sets.

Called at 7:35am asking for service the same morning. They were able to have someone out before 9am. Work took about 30 minutes. They did extra lubrication of one lock after I paid since the keys stuck a little. The two men (one younger and one older) were professional and efficient. I had first contacted a more highly rated locksmith, but it took several hours to hear back from him, and he wasn't going to be available for several days. I was very happy with the quick service.

Bulger was the developer's installer of the locks on a historic townhouse restoration project in Capitol Hill. The reference to use them came from the management company of the homeowners association. Buger sent Adam out to and quot;unstickand quot; the historic front door lock that had recently been rekeyed (by Bulger, for the developer). Despite Bulger's having performed the original work, I was charged an additional $180. to oil the lock and cut two new keys. The lock was working whwn the tech left. This winter, when temperatures went down to the 30s, those new keys and the lock have failed again (January 2013). I called Bulger with the August invoice information last Monda. No response for days until I contacted the owner (Mike) who said he wouldn't honor any work on historic home locks. I asked that Adam come back out and fix the problem again anyway. Still no site visit to fix problem and I can't use my front door. TERRIBLE customer service and follow up!!!
Description of Work: Bulger made a service call to my townhome to "unstick" a front door lock that Bulger had recently installed for the developer. The rep also cut two keys.

The initial phone call to ask whether they would open the fire safe was friendly and helpful. I went right down to the store. They took the fire safe from me right away, told me approximately how long it would be, and called me the moment it was done. Very prompt, and very accurate about what they said they would do. The service was performed at their store. I do not know the year it was built, nor was that relevant, but the evaluation form forced me to choose a year.
Description of Work: I asked them to create keys for a small fire safe to which I had lost the key. They told me it would take an hour, and asked whether the safe contained anything. When I responded that it did, the person helping me immediately put a strip of painters tape all of the way around the box and had me initial across the end, so that I would know that they had not opened the box. The service actually only took about a half hour, and I now have two keys to the box. If I had known it would be this easy to re-key my box I would have done it a long time ago. Not so burglar-proof, then, but at least I can get into the box and get out what I put in. Fantastic service!

Hi Member! Thank you very much for taking the time to give us feedback on our services. So glad we were able to help you get into your safe and that you now have keys! We have heard horror stories of other "locksmiths" opening safes and filtering through the contents of people's safes. Scary! Bulger installed the expensive "unpickable" Medeco locks a few years ago. I called them today because my house was broken into again last night but this time I was at home. You could hear the the deadbolt of the front door slide open and then the creaking of the door as it was pushed open. At that point the alarm (installed by another company) went off. Each time I have called Bulger they have insisted that the thieves are getting in through another way. As I was home last night I now have verifiable proof. The "unpickable" Medeco lock was either picked, bumped, or someone had a key and I know where all my keys are. So I called Bulger to see what they had to say. The response I received was that they were not going to do business with me because of the report I had made on the internet and then they hung up.

The company responded promptly. They installed a new lock but transferred the arm from the damaged housing to the new lock. It broke again that same night, so we called the company. Again, they responded promptly, coming out the following morning. The technician patched the lock up again, but it still does not work.. We believe that Bulger Safe and Lock should have told us right from the start that the housing was damaged and that we would need to buy a new cabinet. Instead they did a patch-up job and the lock still does not work. We are now out $173.00 and still need to get a new cabinet.

No one likes being called a liar. I contacted Bulger and told them that someone was coming into my house through one of two doors that had Medeco locks. Bulger insisted the thief was getting in another way. I tried to explain that unless Scotty was beaming someone down from the Enterprise, there was no other way anyone was getting in. Bulger again insisted that I was wrong and no one was getting in through the locks. I asked to have someone come out and look at the locks. It took 4 phone calls to get an appointment set. They kept saying they would call me back and never did. When the technician arrived I told him which door I thought was the problem. He looked things over and said that the door was working correctly and that the Medeco lock was working correctly. To summarize - the door is working correctly and the lock is working correctly - and I spent $200 on a lock that won't keep thieves out. They had two opportunities when they worked on the locks (the install and the rekey) to let me know there was a problem. Nothing was said to me.
Description of Work: Bulger originally installed Medeco locks on two doors about 3 or 4 years ago (original cost over $800). Locks were rekeyed about a year ago (cost about $150.) Called them in December 2010 because someone was slipping into my house and stealing things. Wanted an evaluation of the locks.

Price a little high, but was told ahead of time and I agreed. (you do get what you pay for, cheap is not wise with locks!) They are efficient, competent, reliable and very, very helpful. Would use them again and again. Had bad misinformation from another lock smith and a poor job from another one. This time I check Angie's List first and so glad I did. Use them, you won't be sorry!

I ended up getting decent quality work, but the guy was hours late and in a pissy mood the whole time. My previous experience with Bulger was far better. I'll definitely get other bids next time I need a locksmith. It started with a call to make an appointment. I told the woman that I needed 3 locks re-keyed at my house. She asked what kind of locks, I said "I don't know because I'm at work but one of the keys has this letter on it, however the other key looks completely different." So she said ok, you have Schlage locks and gives me an appointment. The locksmith, Ed, shows up at least 2 hours late. Turns out I have 3 doors that need re-keying, but each cylinder that needs to be re-keyed is considered as a single re-key. So I actually had 6 cylinders to rekey. Additionally, one of the doors didn't actually have Schlage locks. Right off the bat he was annoyed and didn't bother to hide it. How is it my fault that the lady on the phone didn't ask for clarification of how many cylinder there were or ignored me telling her that one of the keys looked completely different from the Schlage keys? I could have counted the cylinders if she asked. So he goes about his business doing the re-keys. While he's at the front door, I ask why the front handle barely works. Instead of telling me "Sorry, but I only have time to do the re-keys, can you make another appointment?" He gets really pissy and takes the whole thing apart. Eventually he tells me that there's nothing that can be done about it and that I should replace it. Really? It's a piece of beautiful 80 year old custom made hardware and because he can't bend a piece of metal, I should just replace it? Forget it. Later when he's out in his truck grinding a bunch of keys, I walked out to ask him a question. He looks up at me with an incredibly annoyed expression. Then goes into a short rant about how he's short on time and how the dispatcher said it would just be 3 re-keys. Finally he's done. The bill is a lot higher than I thought it would be, but I did get expensive hardware so I didn't quibble. Then he forgets to charge me $12 for a little piece (a spindle) that costs about $1 at Ace and thinks he's doing me a favor by not re-writing the bill to put it in. Additionally I paid $79 for the service call. So if I'm paying $560 for parts and labor, am I really expected to pay $79 for the privilege to have you come to my house? I can understand if I have you come out and then don't do any work. But when you're already charging me for the work, to pay for a "service call" seems unfair. I bear some fault for not accurately describing what I needed done. But I'm not a locksmith, I don't know that one deadbolt with 2 cylinder is actually two "re-codes" and the dispatcher did nothing to clarify it. The guy shows up hours late in a pissy mood and just gets more and more upset. To his credit, despite being in a bad mood, he did good quality work. I've used Bulger twice before to re-key a different house. I had a great experience with them, but they were different locksmiths. This guy, Ed, according to his shirt and the work order, was nothing like the other guys. I'd recommend getting quotes from another locksmith, and if you do chose Bulger, ask for someone besides Ed.

After locking myself out of the house, I called Bulger because they were able to come rescue me in less than 45 minutes. I had accidentally locked the front screen door, which can only be opened from the inside and went out the back door, which I didn't have a key for. The locksmith arrived right on time and literally popped open my screen door in less than 10 seconds. After realizing that it was going to cost me $105 total for 10 seconds ($90 for the emergency service call and $15 to pop the screen door lock), I asked the locksmith if he would install a new lock on the back door, since I didn't have the key to open the existing one. He said since I was already paying the service charge and had the new lock, it would be an extra $50 to install it. The new lock included a dead bolt, so he had to cut a new hole into the door. It took him about an hour to install the lock, and he did a great job. He was very professional and cleaned up the mess that all the saw dust made after he drilled the new hole into the door. I was really pleased with the work. Hopefully now that I've replaced the screen door lock and the back door lock, I won't have to use them again for an emergency, unless I manage to lock myself out of my car!

We contacted Bulger because of a review we read on Angie's List. They were very responsive and we scheduled an appointment for our first available weekday. The called before they arrived, and they arrived within their original estimate (and exactly when they said they would in the call). The locksmith, Brad, walked through the house and went over what our choices were for types of locks. We added the two new deadbolts to the work order, and somehow they were able to squeeze that work into their schedule. The locksmith took out our locks to his truck, re-cored them, and installed the new deadbolts (in existing holes) in about two hours. It took another 90 minutes to drill the holes for the new deadbolts and install those. While Brad was at it, he also fixed our sticky front door handle and realigned two doors that didn't quite close correctly. He had tips for how to maintain our locks. Overall, we were very happy with the service that Bulger and Brad provided. We did visit the store earlier, as well, and were happy to receive a lecture on the high-end locks available (thanks, Tom!). We're happy with the locks we chose, and we would not hesitate to do business with Bulger again.
Description of Work: We recently purchased a house with many doors and not enough locks. We decided to replace light-duty deadbolts, add deadbolts, and re-key all the locks to the same key. In all, we re-keyed (recored) 5 Schlage locks, added four double-cylinder heavy-duty commercial deadbolts (two of which required drilling new holes as the doors had no deadbolt before) and made four duplicate keys. The price breakdown was $3 for the keys, $90 for the holes, $660 for the new deadbolts, and $75 for the re-cored existing locks. There was a service call charge for $70, but they threw in the re-core of the new locks for free (a $120 value).
