The phone call was very pleasant, the time to come out was quick and they were on time. The only complaint that I have is that the individual didn't have the right (basic) tools to do the job. He was going to jimmy together a way to screw off a large bolt from the water heater. So, my husband had to go out and buy the appropriate tool. The service rep stayed way longer than he needed to because the hot water heater took a long time to drain. That was nice.
Description of Work: We had a hot water heater that the water would go cold after filling up a bathtub halfway. My husband thought that an element had gone out. So, I called Mountain Valley, at first they recommended that we just replace it, but we insisted they see if there is an element out. Sure enough, one of the two elements were out. They replaced the element and it works perfectly!

Response from MOUNTAIN VALLEY HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING, INC
The water heater element needing to be replaced was located at the base of the tank. The hot water tank itself, was situated in a difficult location and positioned in such a way, making it hard to access the element. There was a lot of sediment in the base of the tank and the hose bib drain was clogged and barely letting the water out, causing the tank to drain slowly. We left and returned multiple times that day to check on the status of the tank draining. We later decided to let the tank drain overnight and returned the next day to finish the repair. The tool I believe the customer is referring to is one we have not had a need for in the past. We have found that even though the components of various manufacturers’ equipment may have the same function; they are sized quite differently from each other. This makes it difficult to always have the properly sized tool on hand. When the job was complete we had more than 4 hours into it but as always, honored our original estimate of $290 + tax for the repair. Considering the multiple trips and extra hours we spent but didn’t charge the customer for, we feel the cost of $290 was very reasonable. We know things can't always go according to plan, but we do our very best to never let that effect our customer's checkbook.

My husband and I were very pleased with the prompt free estimate and installation of a 95 percent gas furnance and new flue. I had been told by several HVAC companies that my furnance problem was very unusal and Jim diagnosed the problem during the estimate. Erik, Anne, and Jim were very knowledgeable and easy to work with. .I highly recommend Mtn Valley!! I would not hesitate to tell my family and friends to call this company.

As the weather turned colder, I realized that my furnace had finally gone out. I had been told that I would need a new furnace but was reluctant to call anyone due to my experience with a company three years ago. They had threatened to turn off my gas if I didn't schedule the installation of a fancier furnace right away. I got a second opinion and another three years out of my old furnace. Angie's List gave me the confidence to select a couple of providers based on others' experiences. Erik from Mountain Valley Heating met with me to provide an estimate. I appreciated his knowledge, honesty and integrity when talking about my options and the differences between the models. He listened to what was important to me and didn't try to sell me anything I didn't want or need.He also took the time to explain the details of the rebates and tax credits associated with the new higher efficiency furnaces. They were able to schedule the installation within a day and when it was most convenient for me. Erik came out, introduced me to his crew and got them started. They had to re-route the gas line and move the water heater over to fit the new wider furnace. Erik told me what they needed to do and made it sound so easy. Very differnt from one of the other bidders who made it sound so complicated. Chris and DJ worked all day to do the work and took the time to show me what I needed to know about the thermostat and filters. When it got later in the day and I had to leave, they quickly finished up and moved everything out of the garage so I could be on my way. Even rushed, the area around the heater was cleaner and neater than it was before they came. The whole team was very courteous, competent and efficient. Even Ann from the office has since followed up about the paperwork coming my way for the rebates and offering her help if I need it. My new heater works great. I didn't know could find a heating company that was so trustworthy and I'm sure glad I did.

I called Mountain Valley and discussed problem with Erik. He scheduled his technician, Sterling, to look at the problem. Sterling was prompt and professional. He explained that the system had a coolant leak. The only way to find the leak for sure would be to drain the system, fill the system with high pressured nitrogen, and locate the leak source. However, he was reasonably sure that the problem was a loose fitting, so he tightened it and recharged the system. I was happy that he was willing to make his best guess, and if we do need to drain the system in the future, we will not be out very much money for the original repair attempt. Sterling also looked at another A/C problem we were having, and he tightened a couple fittings on that unit as well.

our old gas furnace was corroded and the exhaust was completely shot. Mountain valley removed the old furnace, removed the corroded exhaust and capped the roof off where the old exhaust exited the house. The extimate for the replacement furnace was very fair, and the work was done very effeciently and of very good quality. I would deffinately reccomend this firm.

I chose Mountain Valley based on several good Angie's List reviews. Erik came out and gave me an estimate, and the final price was very close to the estimate. Work started promptly the next week, and last for about 4-5 days. Erik and his crew did very nice work, and were very careful about not damaging floors, walls, etc. I made several requests for them to change duct routing, which required them to re-do portions of the duct that they had already installed. In the end, I have a very quite and efficient heating system which should last for many years. I would definitely call on Erik and Mountain Valley for heating or cooling system work in the future.

I called Mountain Valley Heating in the morning asking if they could come by my home and do an estimate for a heat pump system last minute. Eric took time out of his personal time to come over after work and do the estimate for me. That night very same night he emailed me the pricing and continued answering my email questions past 11PM. I've never encountered such wonderful service before! I highly recommend this company.

These guys were recommended to us by a friend who used them and gave a glowing review. We got a few estimates and they were extremely competative, plus they were very friendly on the phone, so we decided to work with them. The guys that did the job were at our place a few times, always courteous and professional. They installed the new furnace and air ducts and when it was time for our gas stovetop to be hooked up, they came back and hooked that up too.

My wife called this company and talked to Eric about a service on our heat pump. The fan wasn't working and it was 95 degrees. I spent one night without AC and told my wife we had to have it fixed ASAP. She checked the list and called a few companies. This company was available and said it was either a fan motor or starting capacitor. They could come out that day at noon to fix it for around $300. After my wife told me about the details I asked her some specific questions about which employee they were sending, warranty and misc. details that I felt were important since I've learned my lesson with a previous heater repair experience that cost an arm and a leg. She gave me the company phone number which I called and got a voicemail for Eric. I left a message and he called me back within 20min. I stated that my wife had called and we were scheduled for service at noon. I asked if the technician was a rookie, because I've had bad experience with novice technicians. He said the employee that was available that day was 21 and fairly new to the industry, but felt he could fix our problem. I asked if he would have all the repair parts on his service vehicle, I was informed that the journey level technicians has service vans and this technician would have a pick up truck and would have to come out then leave to go get parts and come back to fix it. I asked about the warranty and Eric said that he didn't know and that he had never been asked that before. I questioned this information again and said, "how can you not know the warranty"? isn't this your company? He said he could give us a 30 day warranty on the labor. He continued to say that he was late to leave on vacation and that he was getting tired of talking to me and said, "look, this is what I've got...take it or leave it" and then suggested that I call around. I was dumbfounded and could not believe what I was hearing. I said, we'll stick with the appointment and hope for the best. I called and told my wife what happened and she was shocked. I said we need it fixed and they'll be here in a few hours. At 1pm the technician who was suppose to be at our house at noon called and said he would be a few more hours. The distributor where they get parts closes at 5pm and they would not have enough time to diagnose and get to Auburn in time to get parts that day. I told them to cancel the appointment at forget it.
Description of Work: We scheduled an appointment and the company couldn't make the time and get the job completed that day. (see next section for details)

Response from MOUNTAIN VALLEY HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING, INC
My name is Erik, one of the owners of Mountain Valley Heating, and I personally received this call from this customer. I normally don’t receive or schedule many service/estimate calls, but my business partner Anne and her family were on vacation and all the company’s phone calls where forwarded to my cell phone. Had I known it was going to be in the 100’s all week long, I would have pleaded with Anne not to leave on vacation. I was fielding between 10-20 calls per hour and working 10-16 hour days. We already had a full week of work scheduled before the heat wave hit and we, along with everyone else in the industry, were doing our best to keep our heads above water. I am not going to get into an I said, they said accusation match. I will however, do my best to explain things the way I heard and remember them. I was under stress that week due to the large number of calls, and the added pressure of wondering how I would get everything done and still keep the promise I had made to my family for a long planned vacation. I’m sure in hindsight; I could have handled the conversation differently. For that I am sorry and do apologize. Just thinking about that week makes me tired. What our conversation boiled down to for me, was the customer was trying to get me to promise to something, that I felt we might not be able to deliver on. I tried to explain the current situation, based on the high volume of calls we were receiving, due to temperatures reaching 105-106 degrees. This made it impossible for us to know the exact time we would be able to do the repair, because I had no way of knowing how long the calls in front of him were going to take. I told him I would however; update him throughout the day if it looked as if the estimated service appointment time could not be met. I explained that without having someone actually look at his unit, I would have no way of knowing, how much, how long or which one of my technicians was best suited for the job and that was the best we could offer on such a busy day. I called them throughout the day, to keep them updated on the schedule of the other service calls that were in front of them, and when we felt we would be able to get to their home. We were shooting for Noon, but I explained that we didn’t know the exact time frame for the repairs ahead of theirs, and we might run late. I don’t remember a price being discussed for the repair. Our practice is to charge $85 + sales tax to come out to determine what needs to be fixed, and then at that time give an exact quote on what it will cost to make the repair. At that point the customer has the option to go forward with the repair or get a second opinion from another company. The only time I will give a customer a quote over the phone, is when they are fairly certain as to what needs repairing. Even in those cases I still need to come out and diagnosis the problem, because sometimes what the customer thinks is the problem is only a symptom and not the exact cause. The technician I was sending out had two years of technical training and has been in the industry for almost two years. He was the only technician I had available, due to the high demand for service we were experiencing, and that was the best I could do. We understand the customer’s desire to have all of his questions answered before going ahead with the service appointment, so as to avoid any surprises along the way. Unfortunately, exact prices and time frames can’t always be given. It is resources such as Angie’s List, Better Business Bureau and referrals from friends, which provide the best reassurances that the decision to hire a specific contractor, will be a good one. After all of this, the lengthy phone discussion and explanations, I still felt as if I wasn’t getting anywhere. All the while my phone continued to ring and the voice mails continued to pile up, so I ended the call. I called the customer at 11:30 am, to let them know my technician was still tied up on a service call, and that he could be there by 2 pm. I explained this would still allow for plenty of time for us to get any necessary parts, because most part houses are open until 5:00 pm. They did not want to take the chance and called back around 11:45-12:00 to let me know they got another company to come out. I wish them the best of luck and am truly sorry they felt we let them down.

It seemed okay at first but he was on the phone with his office most of the time asking questions about the work. Having to call him back wasn't so good and then his asking for another $85 for coming back was just silly but his office accepted that I wasn't paying the added $85. Needless to say I wouldn't use them again.
Description of Work: The heat pump wasn't cooling & Erik came out on May 19th. The heat pump was icing up and he fixed it; checked the furnace over and put the filters back in. But I had to call him back as it still wasn't cooling and he said he "probably" overlooked some things he should have done the first time. Then he said he would have to charge an extra $85 for coming back which I refused to pay.

We were asked to perform a routine maintenance on the customer's heat pump, plus she mentioned the unit may need some additional servicing on top of the maintenance because it was not cooling adequately. We found during the course of the maintenance that the refrigerant was at a very low level causing the unit to ice up. Since we had no service history with the unit we added refrigerant until it was at the proper operating level. We let the system run for another 20-30 minutes while we worked on other maintenance related items. This added refrigerant was given to the customer at no additional charge. We told her that this may solve the problem and it might not, since this is the first time we have serviced this equipment. She then called at a later date to say she was experiencing the same problems. We told her it sounded like there were some more in-depth issues that we would need to troubleshoot. We explained that for $85 + tax (diagnostic charge) we would come back out to determine what might be the trouble. She seemed upset that we had to make a return trip and were not able to fix it in one visit. We agreed to waive the diagnostic fee and came out to her house to see what was going on. We spent two hours trying to find a refrigerant leak in the system. We cleaned the outdoor coil, leaked checked the indoor and outdoor coils and refrigerant piping, and replaced all the systems schrader valves (the valve stem that holds the refrigerant in the system). There were never any additional charges made to the customer. We explained that it would take a lot more time to continue any further and the customer decided not to pursue the issue with us any further. We suggested trying to get in touch with the company that installed the heat pump, to see if they might come out and honor the equipment’s warranty since the heat pump was only a few years old. We understand how frustrating it can be when service issues are not resolved in one visit. Unfortunately, heating and cooling repairs are sometimes similar to auto repairs. Just as you can take your car in and explain the problem, the technician isn’t always able to diagnosis the exact cause and resolve the service in one appointment. We feel we went above and beyond to satisfy this customer. We never charged her anything above the initial preventing maintenance fee of $139 + tax. We hope she has solved her heat pump problems and we are sorry for any misunderstandings and frustrations we may have caused.

We had Mountain Valley install a furnace for us. That work was good, and Eric and crew were great to work with. My disappointment was how they handled getting a permit. Annie said they could pull one easily and didn't mention how much they would charge. Seattle heating permit is pretty simple, even if you have to do a equipment sizing calculation - the city provides an Excel sheet and you just fill in a few areas or wall lengths. The permit came in the mail with an invoice from MV - permit was $110 and they charged $50 to prep and submit. No visit to permit office, etc., just $50 for about 15- 30 minutes of work. I expressed my surprise at the amount (and I know it was somewhat my bad for not asking for the cost, but I trusted them to be reasonable), and Annie made no offer to reduce. It was disappointing after the good work that they had done on the furnance. If I had known the cost, I would have done the application myself no problem.

Our customers always have the option of acquiring the permit themselves. If the request is made for us to perform that service, the time required to complete such a service involves more than completing the application. In this situation, time was needed to compile the data (home’s windows, doors, roof & wall insulation square footage plus converting square footage into linear and cubic footage for basement floor and infiltration calculations), complete the application, following application approval (takes 24-48 hours) contact with city to pay for permit, and mailing permit to homeowner. We believe the fee of $50 was reasonable compensation for this service.

We purchased the furnace from them and they came out and installed it. They gave us a middle of the road quote. We chose them based on personality. They just seemed very ethical and like they really wanted to come and do the work. They are locally owned, which was important to us. We didn't have to worry about them having to go back to an office that was far away. They came the day they said they were going to come. They were on time and had the work done the same day. Arrived on time, worked on heater, very friendly, price was the agreed upon amount. I was extremely satisfied.
Description of Work: Called to have a service call done in the worst storm of 20 years. Many people without heat so I had lots of flexibility on my heater. I going to give them an A for responsiveness but that is because they were responding to people who really needed it. So maybe they did deserve an A.

We gutted our 1928 bungalow house and acted as our own general contractor. Of all the many companies and subcontractors I came into contact with, this was BY FAR the best, most professional, and most pleasant company I dealt with. Erik, the co-owner, was a delight to work with, and his crew worked very, very hard to completely re-do the duct work and move the furnace and water heater installation out to the garage. They also replaced all the gas lines in the house, added gas to our fireplace, and installed and vented all the bathroom/laundry fans and the dryer vent. The bid was significantly less than the bid we received from a gas company, and the workmanship and overall experience was fantastic. I cannot say enough good things about this company.
Description of Work: Installed furnace and water heater and replaced all ducting in 1928 home on Queen Anne. Also replaced all gas lines in the house.
