Five Star Painting of Federal Way and Tacoma

Five Star Painting painted our house last summer (2017). They did a truly excellent job. They responded quickly to calls/emails, showed up when they said they would and listened to everything we said (big plus). The project manager, Pat, showed up every day, sometimes twice a day, to check on progress. He had the crew repaint the garage door three times, I remember, because bubbles kept popping up (due to previous painters’s shoddy work). They cleaned up after themselves and were careful around my exterior plants. Here it is more than half a year later, and I’m still admiring the precise and beautiful job they did.

Sales person and project manager were good and professional. Outside painting is OK. There could have been more scraping and prep work done before spraying. Interior room painting was not done correctly. In areas the paint was bubbly like there were small air pockets. there was no question on their part that they would come back and make good. They sanded some of the spots and primed and painted the room. It looks much better but still had a few spots that I sanded and painted.

If you love to have to re-do the work that you paid someone else a lot of money to do, then these are your guys. The clear lack of attention and care to the prep work has resulted in constant peeling and bubbling of all the surfaces they touched some 2+ years ago. To their credit, they DID come back out after the initial work was done to “fix” the terrible staining job they did on our deck as it was peeling off in sheets 6 months later, however all that was done was the application of another coat of product. When it was complete, the project manager (who never bothered to come by and check on things) called my wife (not me) and told her that “if it happens again, it’s your problem”. Classy. No follow up from the owner at all, who seemed nice enough but disconnected from what was really happening on-site. another 6 months later, the stain was coming off in sheets, yet again. I spoke with the fine folks at Sherwin-Williams who confirmed that the only reason their products would be doing this so quickly after the completion of the work would be poor preparation of the surfaces. They were nice enough to give me a discount on the purchase of paint and stain to re-do the job right. Oh and be sure to read the fine print on their warranty… it’s only activated when you leave them a “5 Star” review with the parent company of the franchise. Pay extra. Go with a company that stands behind their work.

excellent workmanship - very clean process and very accomodating

A gentleman came over to review the job request & gave us a written estimate which we felt was very reasonable. Once we gave the go-ahead, we scheduled the job. They worked very diligently & professionally. During the whole process, there was one person assigned to continually follow-up & check-in with us to be sure we were satisfied with the process & results. We are very particular & were pleasantly surprised to find that they exceeded our expectations!

Let me first start by saying that we have hired FSP (Five Star Painting) for multiple jobs (4), all based on the quality & pricing of their previous job with us. Our first experience with Five Star Painting (previously Protect Painting) was at our previous home, approximately 3 years ago. The next 3 jobs were at our current home all within the past 6 months. Let me highlight some themes across all these jobs. • Their pricing was fair (we received multiple bids throughout) • They communicate great throughout the process: plan, schedule, colors/paint type, follow up after job was done • Teams were always on time for start of job and were always professional • For exterior jobs, they pressure washed the house and caulked where needed/required • Complete prep before painting began, drop clothes, taping, etc, covering of plants and or furniture • They are fast, and paint with high quality. Our interior jobs had a lot of detail – crown molding and tons of trim throughout. They even did some dry wall repairs that I was putting off doing myself – rounded corners are tough, and they did an awesome job. • Upon completion, walk around was always done to spot any problem areas and they were immediately remedied. • High commitment to quality work. A after our first paint job, I spotted some tough to reach/see areas of the house that were painted too lightly. They came back out without question to fix. We loved the work these guys do so much, my wife and I have joke about wishing we had more rooms for these guys to paint. They have done such a great job some friends saw our new home’s exterior paint job and immediately hired FSP to paint their home. Sadly, we had some other friends also have FSP out to provide a bid for their home, and they decided to go with another firm that was slightly less expensive. My friend learned the hard way that you get what you pay for. He regrets his decision every time he sees our paint job and hears me tell of my experience with FSP. I highly recommend Five Star Paining to anyone who wants a high-quality paint job at a fair and competitive price. I included a before and after picture. Grey is the new color.

Five Star Painting provided an excellent explanation of what will be involved and scheduled us for preparation and painting in a timely manner. We had no misgivings at any point, and were very happy with the end result. We would always recommend them.

The crew made a mistake by painting the house numbers and the doorbell. I pointed it out and it was quickly fixed. The supervisor even did a walk through and found a few spots that were missed and made a suggestion that the trim on the bottom of the house would look better in blue than white and would not get dirty as easy. My neighbors just love the way the house looks.

The estimate was fine. I found the estimate to be acceptable, so I signed the contract. The estimate was free. The salesperson did a very good job. They took a lot of time and looked around. There was no problem with that. I accepted their price. Until I see the finished product, the price is hard to judge. It is also hard to judge the quality until it is finished. They were very punctual.

They were highly recommended on Angie's List. Unfortunately, I have not been as happy with them with their communication in what's going on. I still haven't gotten my house painted. I can understand that because the summertime is really busy. Except for the initial contract and salesperson, everything has been done by email. I'm still waiting on them. I decided on the paint, so I emailed the paint colors that I wanted. Besides the very beginning with the salesperson, who has been very good, I haven't seen anybody except the guy doing the pressure washing. So, I have been a little ambivalent. He did two buildings in about two and half hours. He left without saying he was done; he just left. I had to email the owner, Terry, to find out what was going on. I have to take the initiative with him. He did call me to tell me they had a free day to come and do the pressure washing. In the contract, it said that all plants and shrubs had to be at least 12" away from the house. Of course, I didn't do it because I didn't have the time. In the meantime, I had my deck redone by someone else, so there was no way they could come power wash. There was no notice. They didn't come out because of the staining of the deck. They said they would come back the following Monday. I had my gardener put away all of the plants. That Monday came, and nobody showed, so I can't say they were punctual. I sent him an email. He emailed back and said there was a problem. I told him his communication skills were bad, and they are. I have signed this contract, and I want to get it done, yet they think I can just drop everything. I don't want to have them come without giving me sufficient notice. I am not going to let someone paint my home without me there. The guy came and I went outside. He did both the house and the detached garage. It looks like he has done it, but then he left. They could've said they were done. I was home because I wanted to be home. It was a new company for me. My gut feeling feels like it was just hurried.

They gave me a quote. Within a two week period after the quote i placed two phone calls to the office, one email, and one voice mail to cell. The estimator never called me back. I took this as a sign of what their responsiveness would be like if I did hire them so decided not to. The estimate was very professional, but that's where our relationship started and ended.

I liked the guy. He knew what he was talking about but I really think he was on the high end. I am not going to use him. The other reason I'm not going to use him is that for that price did not include any of the cosmetic or structural repairs that were required. That was not included in that. He said oh yeah you just have your handyman do that. Then I ran into another painter. Not only was he very knowledgeable and good about the paint but he had been a contractor and he said that he could do all the repairs and the paint job, his bid on the paint only was like around $7600 and then about another $15-$1800 to do the structural piece. I believe I have actually signed the bid and mailed it to him, I'm just waiting to hear when they're going to schedule doing that paint job; probably in August is tentatively what we agreed to. So the other provider is going to be doing the job for me. Overall experience without reacting to the money; they came out right away, they did a thorough job walking around measuring, determining all the things that needed to be painted trim wise, windows and all of that l. It's just when I got the quote I was like that is outrageous and he's not even going to fix any of the issues. I'm going to have to have a handyman do that. so the thing is I know you have the set task of getting reviews and ratings but what I guess I'm trying to tell you is that in the effort of looking at the things we needed to do I ended up having somebody do the gutters who was not in Angie's List and I ended up saying well the painter I'm getting a painter who is going to be able to do all of the structural repairs so I don't have to coordinate a handyman with the people painting the house. So that's part of why, besides the price, is why I chose the other company. All I'm trying to do is give you a feel. I appreciate Angie's List in that people have been rated, they've been certified by you guys; but still as a consumer I talk to a wide variety of people for example, like a painter who only paints and ultimately right it would cost me more money for the painter and then to have an independent handyman contractor do some of the repairs than it's going to cost with going with a painter who can do both those things. So I'm just saying it's not an exact science just of discreet jobs you got work and then you got these guys they identify oh you may have a little water damage here or this gutter may have been causing a problem here and then you know you gotta balance all that stuff out. So I would say someone like the construction company who will work with me in the ways that they do is exceptional. And I would say the other painter being reasonable about the painting cost and then effectively saying and for an additional amount of money we will be able to do the following repairs that we talked about; when I compare that to Five Star, I see that Five Star is definitely a very professional painting organization but because of their restrictions and you know I don't do windows kinda mentality, if somebody says I'm going to come clean your house but I don't do windows, then you have to go hire a window cleaner to clean your windows. So I'm trying to convey that is really the most valuable feedback other than for the people who do a discreet service then you know that's when I can say I'm giving this guy an A for the job they do, the cost of doing this particular item, but it may be that I don't end up choosing them to do everything because if I can choose someone to do painting who will also do that other stuff and not me charge me for their time to come out, etc. they're just going to do it all; that's going to have a big influence on what choices are made. So it's not just a quality, cost, and punctuality of the work. It's is this person who really wants a business and is going to help by doing all the things they know they can do to help you, versus Five Star and no disrespect to them or anything, but the guy comes off like what we do is we do painting and we don't do this other stuff and you know but we're the best painters in the world; but the cost is effectively outrageous in my opinion. Anyway, I hope I'm not being your ear about this too much, I'm just sincerely trying to say this is what I think matters. I mean definitely I want them to know they are going to show up, they're going to do the work and everything else and that's kinda a given to me that if I pick somebody from Angie's List who is rated A, has a number of reviews, maybe only has 1 or 2 bad reviews where you can say oh that was a nutball or some unreasonable person; but in the end you know I expect anybody on Angie's List to show up and do quality work if they've been certified by you and are an A. But the real thing that's gonna let me decide who I'm going to choose is going to be people who will work with me and help facilitate getting everything done that I need to, to do the job. I'm not going to use their services because of the reasons I told you.

Excellent. The work was done according to my expectations in the time frame I had hoped for. The crew doing the siding work and painters were all courteous, respectful and communicated their every move. The outcome was a professional job with excellent results. I'm very happy and highly recommend Five Star Painting as the company to hire.

We obtained several bids for the project from contractors that we verified were licensed and insured. The approaches to the work and the bids varied somewhat and we settled on Five Star Painting of Federal Way. They were very professional in the bidding process and provided written information about their company and the work that they do. The bid was fair and we felt it provided a good value for the money. Painting our home went well, the workers were skilled, organized, careful and easy to work with.

Everyone we came in contact with was friendly, professional and hard working. Protect Painters were the first to give us an estimate, had all of the information (bonding & liability) at the time of estimate, and were fairly priced. Pat Sullivan, the project manager was out each day to check on the painting crew and to see if we were satisfied and the painting crew were the hardest working crew I've seen and did a very good job. Payment is not made until the customer is satisfied with the job. We are very satisfied.

ProTect did a great job. Terry gave me feedback on color selection (and he was spot on) and they did exactly what they said they would do. Price was reasonable and I was impressed with their professionalism throughout the process. They certainly pay attention to detail and want the customer to be pleased with not only their actual work, but their service as well.

Our home is 43 years old. We contracted separate companies to have the original popcorn ceilings removed and recessed lighting installed;; then the guys from ProTect Painters came in and did their magic, painting and transforming our dull, dingy ceilings and bringing the entire home back to life! The guys did a wonderful job, paid attention to detail and were very flexible in making sure we had our needs met. Pat reiterated that he wanted to be sure we were happy with the job and we undoubtedly are! A relative stopped by the house last evening and the minute she walked in, she said WOW, this is soooo nice!!! Need I say more? Thank you Terry, Pat and the guys from ProTect for doing a such a fantastic job!!!

Mr Terry Kouble was contacted by me, then he came over to my residence to survey the area that needs to be painted. He then gave me suggestions and idea about what type of paint to be used. He told me that the front surface would be prepped before applying the paint material. On the first occasion, he sent a gentleman to clean the front surface of my house, After the clean up and preparation, Mr Kouble contacted me again to give me a schedule of when the area would be painted. He also gave me idea about which type of paint was to be used. On the day of painting, he painters got a hold of me and told me the procedures of what they were about to do. Just like Mr. Kouble said, the whole painting proccess would take about half a day. As promised, the paint job was completed on time, and on both occasion, from prepping to painting and finishing, the individuals who completed the job were very professional, courteous, and they observed full safety measure and clean up to complete their assigned job. If I have any more paint request in the future or any of my friends need paniter in future, I will highly recommend Mr Terry Kouble and his crew. Thank you .

They were amazing! Their attention to detail was impressive and the quality of the paint was top notch!

We couldn't have been more pleased with the professionalism of the team working on our home. They were punctual, worked tirelessly and paid extreme attention to detail. Great care was given to taping, covering bushes and painting trim. The owner made several visits during the job to make sure all was going well and made a final inspection of the entire house when the job was finished. Everything was done completely to our satisfaction and we would not hesitate to use ProTect Painters again.

I've worked with Protect Painters several times over the years. As a Real Estate Broker, I refer them often to my clients.
