Description of Work: Pretty disappointed with this whole experience. I bought a "Big Deal" for 8 man-hours of landscaping service for $299. When Joey came out to walk the property, he convinced me that the best upgrade for my property would be to rebuild a 2nd-story deck rather than do landscaping. The job needed to be done, so that was okay even though it was going to cost over ten times the original deal amount. We agreed on a price and a schedule, and I opted to do most of the demolition of the old deck to save labor cost. About two weeks ahead of what we'd agreed, I got a call from their office saying they'd be there to start about ten days early. So I ramped up and got the demolition done, finding in the process that there was more damage to the structure than anticipated. I called and let them know, and Joey came out to re-assess. At that point, he told me that some siding repair would be needed, and that he didn't do siding. He offered to complete the deck at a higher price (TBD) but refused to deal with the small bit of siding that was involved. He also repeatedly told me the deck was ugly and I should just take it off and replace the slider with a window. | |So - we parted ways and now I have a very ugly mess to deal with, no deck, no contractor, and it's the busiest time of year. At least Angie's List refunded my $299 once I explained all this to them!

Description of Work: He came over on Saturday and was very punctual and did a great job. He got the work done and some. I would use him again, he was quite helpful. He put the plants into the yard and took the old plants out and transported them to another area. He cleaned in some area's and made it look really nice. He put in a retaining wall as well as moving other items and put them into one area for eight hours. It was an outstanding job.

Description of Work: Regrading, retaining walls, porch and stairs, all block with drainage. Dry rock retaining wall at property line. Stairs up slope of large set stones. |All done meeting all expectations, including making changes to meet new perspectives as they entered the job, and with reduction in cost from using fewer steps than initially estimated. Every question was completely talked out before work was done, and everything was explained well. Neighbor asked for contact information to talk about similar work on their property. This was one of the most pleasing contract jobs I have done in years of home ownership.

Description of Work: We are trying to change our landscaping to have less grass and more drought resistant plants. We had two projects that Randy and Joe, owners of ULC, helped us with. The back yard was mainly dead grass and weeds- so, the area was plowed up and now has a stone patio, walkway with gravel and areas for plants. Since the weather has been so hot this summer, we requested that the planting be completed in the fall. ULC was really flexible with this and will return in the fall to complete the planting. |We also had the strip in our front yard ,which is alongside the street, plowed up and stone and gravel placed there. We are very pleased with the look of both of these areas. Randy was very easy to work with, was flexible and patient with us as we changed our plans a couple of times. The two projects took about 6 days which was what Randy had estimated. We have other areas of our yard that we want to work on in the future, so, I would hire ULC again for those projects. |

My wife and I were thoroughly pleased and satisfied by the planning and execution of our project with Universal Landscaping. We initially purchased a Big Deal for an assessment . Joey arrived as scheduled and we generally described our ideas and he provided feedback. After interviewing one other potential contractor we decided to go with Universal. The work was scheduled about six weeks out. During that six weeks we revised our plans several times and Joey was most accommodating, promptly providing revised estimates in line with the original estimate (which was somewhat lower than the other firm we interviewed). After the work began we again revised our plans and Joey and Randy accommodated these changes without blinking an eye. All the grass in our front yard was removed , soil amendments and planting mix applied, and three large rocks placed. The most prominent feature of our job was some 70 feet of paver walkway with a number of curves, some of them tight turns. The work was completed beautifully, with a large number of custom cuts to accommodate the bends in the walk. Also installed was a dry stream bed of varied sizes of cobble rock. Joey and Randy are pleasant individuals, happy to answer all our questions. Though we did not contract with them for planting they offered suggestions without hesitation. We feel we got more than fair value for our money. They were tidy and cleaned up thoroughly. These guys are totally honest and have high standards. We would definitely hire them again.

I purchased a $50.00 evaluation and plan. Joey was quick to respond and set up a time to come to the house. He was on time and very polite. He gave us a great tip about moving dirt away from the house to keep the siding from rotting, something us California transplants did not know about. My husband and I thought the $50.00 would either get us a start to our landscape project or at least plans on what we could gradually do over time. Joey did have one idea that we liked, but the rest of his estimate was simply on plans we had already come up with on our own. Plus, we never walked away with plans, only a quote for the work to be completed. So if they provide free estimated, what did I pay $50 for? Not worth the money, just call for a free estimate instead.

Response from UNIVERSAL LANDSCAPE CORP
Hi (member name removed), I apologize for this misunderstanding of the process I thought would take place. I left you last with some ideas for your property. I gave you an estimate of ideas I thought you might like. The one being most important to you was a fence around your acreage. I got the feeling you did not want a drawing of a fence around the property line. I was thinking you would have me back out after looking at the estimate and come up with areas or projects that were worth drawing and putting into plan. There were several ideas, I thought you would have got back to me to tell me which ones were most feasible to your property and budget. I was surprised to see that you went straight to doing this review and not giving me a chance to further evaluate or participate in the plan stage of your projects. I am still willing to work with you on a plan. Sorry Again, Joey

Description of Work: Randy and Joey were fantastic. The first meeting was with Randy who took pictures for the project and discussed what I wanted. The second meeting Randy brought the design and we walked through the project. With everything in place, they arrived and spent the day putting everything in place. Everything is amazing. They want you to have a beautiful and successful project.

Randy and his team were very responsive, arrived when scheduled and concluded the project on schedule and at the price estimated. Randy is easy going and pleasant to work with. They did a wonderful job completely redoing a water feature that was installed by another company last fall. He even sent us pictures of the progress via text message, as we were traveling on business while they were doing the work. When my wife and I saw the pictures during our trip, we both said "Wow!" and "That's spectacular, that's what we thought we were getting when the other company did the original work". He was also very willing to make a few tweaks during the project when requested. Although they were slightly higher on the bid for this project than a couple of others we talked to, the old adage "You get what you pay for" comes to mind. We were so happy with the water feature work, that we had them install low-voltage landscape lighting throughout the recreational area in our back yard where the water feature is. He also completed this work as scheduled and recommended some enhancements we hadn't considered. We were extremely pleased with all aspects of the work performed and we have already requested bids on additional work we plan to have them perform. We would not hesitate to recommend them and will continue to use them in the future.

Once we got the estimate, we booked them pretty quickly (after Randy worked to get us closer to our budget). They came in and tilled up the whole yard, installed a rock retaining wall, took out a large concrete patio, removed a tree and 2 rhodies, and laid down new topsoil and mulch. We will get our new hydro seed tomorrow! Randy was very responsive and knowledgeable in answering all of my questions. Also, he estimated a week to finish the yard and they basically got it done in 4 days. I would definitely recommend Universal Landscape Corp! Also, we live in Renton and they commuted all the way to us every day! We are planning to redo our back patio once our budget allows and we will definitely have Universal Landscape come back out!
Description of Work: Randy came and gave us an estimate on a complete overhaul on our back yard. We were completely lost as to what to do and he helped give us some guidance. I really liked his ideas and felt really comfortable with his knowledge, so the only reason that I put N/A on pricing is because we didn't get any other quotes to know if his was high or not (although I feel that he was probably very fair and reasonable).

Randy has done multiple jobs for me related to landscape design, deck building, waterfalls. However, this most recent job he was able to reconstruct a falling down/structural damaged garage with new beams, garage door, support beams and siding. Additionally, he completed the siding and was open to several change orders as the job progressed. Once the job was complete, I had a structural engineer look at the repairs and they were impressed at the change from before and after. The house was later listed and sold within one day based on the craftsmanship of the work and overall street appeal. I would definitely recommend Randy and his company.

Excellent - showed up when they said they would, worked with us to get the look we wanted. The job took exactly as long as they said it would. They always cleaned up every day. They did a complete back yard re-landscape for us in 2005 - installing terraced landscape, pond with tiered waterfall, re-slope the yard, French drains, lighting and irrigation system. They did a really great job, and any time something has happened (pump in pond wore out), they have always responded quickly (usually come out to fix the same day). We did not consider calling anyone else when we decided to have the side yard project done. I didn't rate the price because we didn't shop around. We viewed some other work they had done in the neighborhood, liked what we saw, and decided to contact them. The price they quoted seemed reasonable, so we didn't feel the need to look any further.
