It was cold in February not have a heater. We were able to get an appointment scheduled the day after we called. He showed up on time and quickly determined the problem. He tried a number of ways to fix it, but just didn't have the right replacement part (a fan) for that brand of heater on his truck.
Description of Work: This is an owner-operator company. Tom the owner is great and very knowledgeable. The heater was not working so he came out to check it out. There was a broken part; unfortunately he did not have a replacement, so had to buy one the next day and come out again to fix the heater. He also checked out and cleaned the heater, and also checked out the humidifier.

Have a Carrier Infinity 95 heating furnace. It was purchased from MM Comfort Systems Sept. 2004. I've had yearly sevice, and the extrusion pump replaced 3 times, last time Sept. 2009. Today the furnace failed - no heat, no motor circulation (variable motor for constant air recircualtion with electronic filter). MMComfort wanted $325 to come out for service and pump replacement as a "weekend emergency". Had enough of them, even though the pump was still under warranty. Searched Angie's list and found Highlander Heating as an area (Redmond-Sammamish) service company. Though I know nothing about this heater, Tom walked me through a couple visual diagnostics to determine as best over the phone what could be wrong. We determined a service call was necessary. Tom said he could be out in a couple hours. That turned out to be 1 hour. The extrusion pump had a plastic tie sinched tight over the plastic relief tube. With that released and a couple shakes of the pump box, replacing batteries in the Honeywell temperature thermostat, it all click on and started to work. To take the heay useage off the batteries (having to be replaced every 75 to 90 days), Tom suggested, and I approved, installation of a fan switch with a common wire at the thermostat to take the total reliance of the heating system off the batteries. Total cost for a Saturday service call and lots more information about this very complicated and expensive system, was $105.12. Tom advised that had any more been required, I would need another provider what has the use of a lap computer to diagnose what was the additional problem. Tom can provide a general system check up and service. He does not, is not, qualified for the additional computer certifications. Highland Heating can count on that I will call them 1st for a service call as a result of his immediate, more than reasonable service call cost.
Description of Work: Diagnose, repair as needed, and return home heating system to operational status.

Their service was very good. The representative came out quickly and on time. He was knowledgeable, pleasant, professional, and did a good job. They got the job done within a week.
Description of Work: They diagnosed the problem with our air conditioner and ended up replacing it. The furnace part was ok but the problem was with the compressor.

Very frustrating experience. I called to have them come out and service my furnace and fireplace. They do not work on fireplaces. Ok, so I settled on having them just come out to service my furnace After spending time researching this company and setting up the appointment, they told me at the very end of the discussion that they will not service condo/townhome set-ups, even though we have a standalone townhome with one furnace that services just our house. They claimed that their insurance does not cover townhomes that are connected. Very, very frustrating. This should have been the first thing they ask in qualifying the customer, until waiting until after everything was set up. Wasted my time.

Response from Highlander Heating & Cooling
As a service oriented business we take pride in doing the absolute best when it comes to helping our customers. If we cannot do that we do not take the job. This is also why we specialize in the specified HVAC products only.(Gas furnaces, Air conditioning ,electronic air cleaners, humidifiers) For this reason we do not work on fireplaces, although there are more reasons.(parts not available etc.) By doing this we can focus on what we do best. We are also a small family owned business and yes our bond and insurance excludes us from servicing any thing over 4 units ATTACHED by walls. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

I think it a one man operation and we always see the proprietor and he is very competent and nice. He does a good job, clean up after himself and we are glad he came. My husband called him one morning and his wife answered the phone and looked up a file and knew what equipment we had and also told my husband what could be done and that was great. He is professional, responsive and punctual.
Description of Work: We used Highlander Heating & Cooling to service our heating and air conditioner. The last time we used them was a year ago for a routine check and cleaning.

Tom came and provided estimate for 80% ad 90% efficiency furnaces and associated ducting, etc. He provided additional information by phone re: questions that came up later after a couple of other estimates. (In all, I got 7 estimates. Highest was about double Highlanders. I chucked the one on the back of a scrap of paper found in one guy's truck who "forgot the estimate form.") Tom set up a replacement date about 10 days out (our furnace was still functioning), showed up on time and cheerful. His buddy Bill came to assist. They chuckled and laughed and allowed me to watch and ask questions (like "why is the sticker on the furnace upside down? Did you just install my furnace upside down? Answer: yes, but it is manufactured to function in any orientation to allow for appropriate venting depending on the space it is to go in. And then they turned the sticker around.) They took 5 hours to put in the HE model and new venting. Only issue was the drywall hole from old thermostat to new one. (vertical orientation went to horizontal with new t-stat). Tom and Bill suggested a plaque or frame from Michaels to cover hole and waited until I fetched a couple of options. It looks a bit hokey though and I will be patching the wall in the near future.
Description of Work: Tom and Bill came and removed old furnace and replaced it with high efficiency furnace and air filtering system. They put in necessary venting, changed the thermostat and explained functioning, care and maintenance of all equipment. They left the garage cleaner than they found it and hauled all their trash out too. oh! and Bill cleaned out my dryer vent too, while he was at it.

I contacted Highlander and set up an appointment for the following day to have our furnace checked due to noises and not having been serviced for a couple of years. I mentioned that yes we do have a gas fireplace and electric heaters so not an emergency but that I work from home so would be available sooner if possible. Received a call shortly thereafter that Tom had some time and was in our area. He arrived when he said he would, diagnosed, repaired and serviced our furnace quickly, efficiently and at a very reasonable cost. Not only is our furnace working well but now we have a dependable, family owned company to call in the future. Thanks, Tom, Highlander and Angie's list.
Description of Work: Furnace started making a noise and had not been serviced for a couple of years. Tom came out - diagnosed problem and replaced needed part then did winter service for well under what we expected to pay.

The whole visit went very well. He came to give us an estimate for the work, but was actually able to fix everything within a short period of time. I had expected we would need a new air cleaning unit, but he found the existing one was able to work fine. He quickly diagnosed the malfunctioning air conditioner, and fixed it right then. He also did the standard maintenance on the air conditioner and the furnace.
Description of Work: 1.Inspected, repaired and did maintenance on air conditioning unit. 2.Inspected electronic air cleaner and got it turned on correctly. 3.Did maintenance on furnace.

They did a terrific job! We would recommend them to anybody without reservations. There was a problem with one of the vents they installed and they came back and fixed it promptly. They stand by their work. The reason the price is so high is because we chose an environmentally friendly and energy efficient furnace.

He was very knowledgeable, honest and pleasant. He told me the furnace was on it's last leg but I would be able to keep it going for a little longer. He stated to replace a furnace in the summer is more economical than during the winter months. Unfortunately, I do not recall the cost but he was worth every penny.
Description of Work: The company got my furnace going again. It was an older unit in which some of the parts were crumbling. The furnace is 18 years. I was so pleased as he was able to make the necessary repairs to keep it in good running order.

I called at 10:30 about a squeaky furnace fan and chose the 12 noon time rather than 2:00. He showed up on the dot of 12:00. He was efficient, explained everything, found the EAC control was burned out and replaced that, cleaned the burners, and explained why I did not need a new furnace. He was responsive to all my questions and glad to share his extensive knowledge. He carried the grimy, sooty motor out the lower level door and up the hill around to his truck, rather than carry it the easy way through the house. All work was done in an hour! Although I hope to not need him again, he would be the first I would call, knowing the work would be done soon, correctly, and quickly.
Description of Work: Replaced blower motor; replaced Honeywell Electronic Air Cleaner control; cleaned burners.
