Great. You'll see from my other reviews that I haven't written many negative reviews. The primary reason for this, is that I've selected providers from Angie's List, and they have performed as people have said they would. Eric, and Washington Electric, is no exception. He arrived right on time, was very personable, professional, and did quality work. Eric's the one that noted that my electric meter had come loose. A couple of the screws holding the meter to the house it had sheared through and as a result, the meter had slid down, far enough for an experienced eye to notice, but not for someone who wasn't aware that it could be a problem. I appreciated him noting it, as it could have been a more expensive repair. Eric also helped me think through some upcoming projects, which might involve his services, so I could anticipate what the work might entail, as well as begin budgeting for them. For me, this is above and beyond what I expected, and I really appreciated it.
Description of Work: moved a 220v outlet for a dryer hook up; reset the electrical meter on the outside of our house (it had come loose) and fixed the door on our circuit panel, which has lost a part.

We had a ceiling fan installed in our bedroom for a great price. The (owner?) also answered some questions in advance over the phone since I wasn't sure what kind of fan to order or whether we had a certain wattage limit, etc... We were leaving soon for 3 weeks and worried about getting the fan in before it got too hot in our bedroom they were great about squeezing us in. The only snafu was that the light fixture on the ceiling fan fell onto the chain and broke when they were installing it (it was kind of a difficult fixture), but they immediately ordered another one at their expense and it was easy for us to put it on when it arrived. I'm sure they didn't make any $ at all off of the visit due to the reorder of the light fixture, but that is the sign of a good contractor. They took care of it right away and completed the job they were hired to do. The person who came out was friendly, professional and on time.

Washington Electric has been here for 2 or 3 days. They do exactly what had to be done. They know how to wire into the walls. There is just no hesitation as far as how they can handle it because some of the stuff was a challenge like hanging lights from an 18-foot ceiling was hard to do. I have a sauna so they put out a separate circuits so I wouldn't blow any more fuses. I would use them again. They were always punctual and everybody always cleaned up after themselves. They are good guys.
Description of Work: They did the lights on our 18-foot ceiling. They added 2 or 3 circuits and new outlets I needed and some other stuff. They installed a few switches and they fixed a couple of things that never worked before.

I had wanted a lamp I purchased installed, but unfortunately it didn't have any electrical parts so it couldn't be hung. I did have a hanging lamp I had wanted to put up, but was afraid it might be too heavy. Luckily, it wasn't and he installed it in our breakfast room. It went very smoothly and I was very happy with the work.

He was able to identify a problem with our system that turned out it had a bad part still covered under warranty. He went above and beyond with trouble shooting the problem. He was going through to do one last test of the system nd determined the cooling system was engaging when it should not have been. He then determined it was because of a bad part. He checked nd ounce out the part was still covered under warranty. He spent over at least an hour longer than scheduled to isolate the problem.

The services that Washington Electric performed for us went extremely well and I would highly recommend them. They arrived on time, performed the required service of replacing a large chandelier, cleaned and packed the old chandelier and left the area in order.
Description of Work: The young men who came to replace a very large chandelier in my entryway did an excellent job. They were quick to respond to my requests and went above and beyond what I expected. Taking the chandelier down required scaffolding which they came with and after removing the old light, packed it up for me after removing all the lights. They then put lights in the new light before putting it up. They were were extremely courteous and friendly. I would definitely use them again.

See the detail above to get a sense how it went overall. Ours was a messy job that unfolded over time. I was very pleased with the expertise and diligence of the contractor. He worked quickly and carefully, and was always forthcoming and relaxed in explaining the work to me. Regarding price, I don't really have a basis for comparison. I didn't get multiple bids. I did have questions about the contractor's pricing process, which he was quite willing to respond to.
Description of Work: It started with an electrical inspection. Mine is an old house that had obvious electrical service upgrades over time. Perhaps the most telling upgrade was installation of a breaker box that left the old fuse box still functional. So, essentially the job was to bypass the fuse box and move its five circuits to the breaker box. That job seemed pretty straightforward, though a hassle because the fuse box was on the outside of the house 25 or 30 feet from the breaker box in the basement. On the original date scheduled for the work, the contractor noticed that other wiring in the basement was not up to code and would be observed by the electrical inspector when she came to approve the removal of the fuse box. A revised scope of work and bid was prepared and the work was rescheduled because it was a significantly larger job, and I needed to get comfortable with the new price. On the new work date, the contractor came on time and coordinated the inspection nicely so that she could be there as he was finishing the job. In the course of the inspector's review of city records, she found that the breaker box was never permitted; there was no record of its approved installation. The inspector easily approved the contractor's work under the revised scope of work, but was required to cite me as the homeowner for improper installation of the breaker box. Essentially the breaker box wasn't correctly grounded. My wife and I have owned the house 10 years; we did not have the breaker box installed. After trying to get the name of the electrician who installed the breaker box, we realized that we would have to pay to correct the installation violation. The contractor did that work for an additional fee. So, a $2,000 job became a $4,000 job, but I don't fault the contractor. The electrical inspectors (two for the different dates of work) were clearly respectful and appreciative of the quality of the contractor's work, which required some clever interpretations of code.

Great. I would use them again and perhaps will this next summer. I'm thinking of installing the same fan in the other rooms in my upstairs.
Description of Work: Installed ceiling fan which I had purchased. Did an excellent job. Very prompt and professional. Complementary on my choice of fan and the research I had done. It was not the usual style of fan and was very quiet and energy efficient. Asked me for the source and consumer ratings so they could recommend the fan to other customers.

Everything went fine. The electrician was very professional and did an excellent job with the installation. He was on time and worked quickly and finished the job in a very reasonable amount of time. Because the fan had been sitting in the garage for a few years, the fan blades were bent and he told me where I could go to get them replaced. He was going to vacuum up all of the debris and insulation that had come down but I had a vacuum right there so I did it myself so he could get on to the next job. The necessity for needing to purchase the heavier amount was a surprise but he explained the requirement to my satisfaction and pointed out that it was mentioned on the coupon.
Description of Work: Electrician installed new mount and reinstalled ceiling fan. Unfortunately, the fan was heavy and the mount required was not covered under the original coupon, necessitating additional payment. I was not aware of this but the electrician did point out that it was mentioned on the coupon and I was okay with that because it needed to be done.

The whole process went very well. They came and gave an estimate, and was very informative on the product, and what I would need for what I wanted. After deciding to go with them, they set up a date and came on that date and installed the generator. It took a couple of days, but the work was done on time. They came back a few weeks later to switch a couple of circuits that I wanted changed, and had no problems in doing it. Now waiting for when power to go out to see how the sytem works.

Dos: 1) Thoroughly evaluate the amount (size) and type of generator you need/want. 2). Have more than one contractor bid the work and evaluate the current household circuitry 3.) If you decide on a natural gas generator, contact the gas company yourself 4.) Make sure you specify the exact scope of work w/contractor and are positive you both understand and agree to those specifications Don'ts: 1.) Don't just "go with" the first bid w/o investigating the competition 2.) Don't go with the big box hardware stores (as a rule). They simply sub-contract out the work and you have no control over contractor 3.) Don't allow your contractor to verbally agree to conditions. Get it in writing! After numerous long duration electrical outages over last 5 years we, decided to get an emergency stand-by generator. We researched the various products and power outputs and spoke to friends who currently have generators. We used readily available calculators to assess our needs and stopped and questioned every vendor at our state fair (the third largest in nation) to determine what products fit our needs and get advice about what we had to do to get ball rolling. Friend w/generator has propane power but even with 200 gal tank has maximum transfer power of about 60 hours. We have had outages lasting twice that and propane refills can't be delivered when we have icy roads. We decided to have a natural gas connection. Called gas company who put us in contact w/their contractors for site eval. Project Mgr told us we would need larger capacity gas meter and piping to increase supply to house. They agreed to run pipe (40 ft or so) free as current pipe apparently failed to meet code anyway but we have to pay for meter upgrade. Then began search for contractor. Using Angie's List, I contacted several contractors many of whom I struck off immediately because of concerns about experience or the way they approached the subject. Finally had three installers come to house. First seemed competent and experienced and said he would go back to office write up detailed quote and e-mail me. Never heard from him again and several attempts to contact him have failed. Second installer/electrician seemed reasonably competent but he wanted me to buy generator, have it delivered and then he would come and install it. (Note: due the the coincidence of timing with Hurricane Sandy, generators were not available from any of the national distributors for at least six weeks). When pressed about installation he sent me an e-mail outlining the company charges but not detailing the scope of work to be done. When I called with questions it appeared to me that company might take short-cuts unless I over saw every step of the process. Then Came Washington Electric. Eric Johnson came out to house one evening, did a site evaluation and sat down with me and my wife and gave us a detailed quote including some additional work we wanted done (installation of a new circuit for some outdoor Christmas decorations and upgrade of my garage/workshop overhead lighting circuits). Eric told us he had the generator in stock (they apparently install a lot of generators) and we signed a contract at that time. In the meantime the gas company was no further along with scheduling my service upgrade. Eric took over negotiating w/them and handled all scheduling and details after that keeping us in the loop by e-mail or phone calls. Installation and gas company service upgrade was finally scheduled for 12/05 and while Eric and his assistant electrician Kirk showed up at 8:00AM, the gas company postponed their upgrade until the following day. Eric and Kirk expertly installed the generator w/o the gas company and also completed the other work specified in the contract. The gas co showed up the following day and because they couldn't find the gas main took two days to complete the upgrade. The entire process is now complete. If we had gone w/contractor #2 we would still be waiting another two weeks (maybe longer) for the delivery of the generator.
Description of Work: Selected and had installed an emergency stand-by generator and automatic transfer switch. Electrical contractor also added circuitry to home and undated lighting circuitry in garage.

Kurt From Washington Electric answered my call for an estimate within a couple hours. He came over between jobs, gave me a price quote and called me back later in the evening to confirm that he could be there the next morning. It was a good thing. I had a thermostat that was possessed and trying to kill me, sending messages to a wall mount heater for "more heat! more heat! more heat!" He did one hour of trouble shooting on the demented thermostat, plus one other thermostat that had given up the ghost and was ready to be replaced. He also traced the problem with the outlet that my garage door opener was plugged into. The Boeing engineer that built my house had wired the outlet backwards and the outlet had shorted out. Kurt quickly fixed the outlet and now my garage door behaves as it should. One light switch replacement and all my electrical troubles were solved in just over an hour.
Description of Work: Trouble shoot malfunctioning thermostat controlling wall mount heater and baseboard heater; trouble shoot an additional thermostat and baseboard heater; troubleshoot malfunctioning outlet that garage door opener was plugged into; replace light switch for overhead light. Thermostat that controlled wall mount heater and baseboard heater was toast and had to be replaced. Thermostat that controlled baseboard heater was also toast and had to be replaced; baseboard heater was also history and has to be replaced. The outlet that the garage door opener was plugged into was wired by the Boeing engineer that built my house and was wired backwards; Kurt fixed it pronto. The light switch replacement was also a quick fix.

I contacted Washington Electric to install a ceiling fan. I had planned to do it myself, but once I got the old fixture out and starting looking at the existing box, I realized there was more work than I knew how to do. I emailed WE on Friday afternoon, hoping to arrange an appointment for the next week. Eric called back later in the day and offered me an appointment for the next morning, which I was glad to get (we were in the midst of a heat wave). Kurt the technician called the next morning to let me know he'd arrive in about 40 minutes. He went right to work and had the fan installed in just over an hour. They were offering a coupon on Angies List for fan installation, so I got a discount on the service! I have used Washington Electric in the past to rewire all the outlets in my 1960s house and will call them the next time I need help with electrical work.
Description of Work: I wanted a ceiling fan installed in my bedroom. Washington Electric put in a new ceiling brace to support the weight of the fan properly and then mounted the fan to the brace. The brace fits inside the casing at the top of the fan, so it's impossible to tell that it's a replacement unit and not original to the house.
