About us

Hello, my name is Mark Griffiths and I am the owner of NW Arbor Care LLC. I grew up in the greater Northwest. After high school, I joined the United States Marine Corps where I was taught punctuality, a strong work ethic, as well as integrity. Later I became a King Crab Fisherman in Alaska, where I was tested mentally and physically. After ten years in Alaska, I worked for Aspluhnd Tree Experts where I earned my journeyman certificate, and later transferred to WestCoast Tree Care as a Foreman. This is where I learned the residential side of the industry. When I started NW Arbor Care LLC (formerly Northwest Arbor Care) in 2003 my sole vision was to instill my life experiences in my business.

They did a very quick, very thorough job. I did my research before I hired this company and they were great. I have recommended them to other people who have also used them and have been satisfied.
Description of Work: We had a large tree that had bleeding sap for years that was probably 30 inches in diameter and about 15 feet from our house. After we had another tree fall on our house, we had them come out to remove this one because we were worried that it might fall.

It was a fabulous experience from start to finish! I called Mark the afternoon of all the flooding. He came to give me an estimate one hour later, and completed the work two days later. The yard looks great. Everything was neat and tidy. I would highly recommend Mark and his crew!

Mark showed up and provided an estimate on time. He specified what the work would consist of and gave the price. The combination of giving the lowest price (out of 5 estimates) and the good ratings prompted me to hire his crew. The showed up on time and did the work promised within 2 1/2 hours. One tree was next to my septic drain field and two others were right up against the fence. His crew did a great job of working around these obstacles. All four on the crew were respectful of my property and neighbors and very professional. I would not hesitate hiring again.
Description of Work: Mark's crew took down 3 large Fir trees in my backyard (100+ feet). Work specified was to leave the wood in 16-18 inch rounds, cut level to the ground, and cleaning up of all the branches.

Initially fine, but there was a frustrating communication breakdown when the day of the job came. We had agreed on an 8:30 AM start time, and I had arranged my work schedule accordingly, as I wanted to be home when the crew arrived, in case of questions. When I called at 8:00 AM to confirm the appt, I was told that our appt had been moved up to "sometime around 11:00 or 12:00, and there didn't seem to be any sense of urgency about that, either. I took my lunch break and came home again between 12:00 PM and 1:15 PM, and at 1:15 PM, the crew still hadn't arrived and I hadn't received a call to explain why. At that point, I called the company rep and gave him a piece of my mind. I do feel that after we talked, he got why I was upset. When the crew did arrive later, they were efficient and did a good job.

TO ALL OF MY CUSTOMERS, DUE TO OUR WIND STORM WE HAD LAST WEEK, I WAS UNABLE TO GET TO THIS CUSTOMER IN THE TIME THAT WAS PROMISED TO THEM. IN MY TYPE OF BUSINESS, WHEN THERE IS A WIND STORM, THE PRIORITY HAS TO CHANGE TO CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE TREES FALLEN ON THEIR HOMES. WE APOLOGIZE FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO CALL BUT THAT HAPPENS IN TIME OF EMERGENCY. THANK YOU, MARK GRIFFITHS, NWARBOR CARE.

The crew came when they said they would, did the work, and cleaned up after they were done. They worked hard and continuously, in a very tight location, and did minimal damage to other surrounding shrubs. I would definitely hire them again, and I'm glad I saw them on Angie's List. I was almost ready to hire another firm, saw the report of the other firm, saw reviews of Northwest Arbor, called them, got a bid, and hired them. I'm going to have them back to do some thinning to decrease potential wind damage.
Description of Work: I had two trees removed, a very large Douglas Fir and a red alder. The Doug Fir had three tops and was within 3 feet of my house. The alder was also within inches of the house. The fir had 3 tops and was over 100 ft. tall.

After a dead tree fell recently, we knew that the trees (which seemed to have had years of neglect by previous owners) need immediate attention. I checked Angie's list and the Yellow Pages. Called three and emailed two. Mark was the first to reply and was out within two hours to check us out. Out of the other 4, only one called and offered an over the phone estimate, which was a good $1000 greater. After receiving a call from another client, they had an opening the next day and was willing to wait a few days for payment. Thank you, Mark and crew!
Description of Work: Entire yard cleaned up and trimmed down, took care of dead wood in a heavily overgrown green space. Left us our firewood and some poles for the kids fort and two loads of wood chip to help control some weeds.

Great! Mark came out for an estimate at 6:30 pm on a Monday and when we decided we'd use him later that night, he arranged to be at my home at 8:30 am on Thursday. He arrived perfectly on time on both accounts, was friendly and professional. Since we had to work that morning, my dad came over to be here while they removed the trees. He said they were very fast and didn't disturb the new shed construction at all, even though the plum tree overhung it quite a bit and was very close to it. He said that perhaps they could have been a little neater in the cleanup, but "that was to be expected". When I came home it looked great, but my dad might have picked up. My dad thought that what took the longest is that I had already made the check out to the company name and Mark wanted it in his name, but I was at work and couldn't write out another one, so it took a while to figure out the taxes and then to figure out the Angie's List discount. Overall, very recommended regardless!!
Description of Work: Removal and stump grinding of one 25-30' holly tree, and one 20-25' very bushy plum tree, whose trunk was less than 1' of the stud walls for a new construction of a large shed. Since some of the plum was SO close to the shed, my dad said they couldn't get it ground as far down as the holly, but I couldn't tell there had ever been a tree there! While we were at it, we saw a large stump from a tree cut down by the last owner and I mentioned we've had a hard time getting rid of it with a rented stump grinder, and manually, and he said he could do that one quickly with his grinder for another $50 (my dad said it would cost him another $100 to try to grind it himself again, so that was a great deal and would save his back). All the foliage and limbs were trucked away, and we were left with the wood, which we gave to our neighbor to burn in the winter. My dad said that in E. Washington he has friends who get their trees pruned or removed and expected the estimate to be twice what it was.

The owner, Mark Griffith, answered my call for an estimate on the first ring! He provided a date and time for the estimate which accommodated my schedule. He walked the yard and pointed out areas that required attention. He also showed me how to properly trim a Japanese Maple! I was quite impressed with his attention to detail. The estimate was reasonable. The work was scheduled to commence in six days. The day before, Mark Griffith called and asked to start the job a day early, and I concurred--clearly surprised that he was so prompt. When I arrived home, the project had been completed. The actual work was completed according to the estimate. The only disappointment was that the yard ornaments were not replaced, such as the bird baths, feeders and plant stands. Quite a bit of gravel from the walk way had been left on the lawn and flower bed. The owner returned to help me clean the yard, beds and replace the lawn items. I received 10% Angie's List credit!
Description of Work: Backyard: Spruce tree removal and stump grinding. Several tree limb trimmings. Front yard tree limbing. Cleared maple limbs from house gutter. Ground old vine maple stump. Minor hedge trimming.

Mark Griffiths arrived the first day with a crew of four workers. We discussed exactly what they would and would not be doing. Mr. Griffiths then left for another job and the crew began work. The original plan was to remove six trees, but the foreman contacted me and suggested that since he had found a number of woodpecker nests in the top of one of the smaller trees, that instead of cutting it down, he would remove most of the branches except those nearest the nests and leave the tree standing as a "habitat tree". We thought this was an excellent suggestion and appreciated his bringing it up. The crew worked two days from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the task was completed. They did an excellent job. Mr. Griffiths returned the following day to follow up and get paid. Cleanup was exceptional (they even left me some tools :-).
Description of Work: Removed five large trees (80-100'). Stripped one dying tree of most branches but left standing as a woodpecker habitat. Thinned about ten other large trees. Ground five stumps. Cleaned up trimmings and job site. We did not have them haul the wood away since Mr. Griffiths stated that it would be quite costly, though I did not ask for a quote. He suggested we could easily give it away through word of mouth or by posting a notice on Craig's List. At this point, we have not tried any of those options, but plan to.

Mark did a estimate and then called me back with a date to perform the work on a "Saturday" morning. The price was good. The only negative there was not follow up. The Saturday arrived and nobody showed up. I called Mark around 1:30pm and he told be he got busy doing some other work for his neighbors, but he could be there on Sunday morning. I said, "OK". The crew showed up at 8:30am on a Sunday and proceeded to wake up the whole neighborhood. The crew was professional, quick, and did a good job of cleaning up. The stump grinder showed up 3 hours later, ground the stump and requested payment for the job. I did not receive the advertised 10% off coupon. The customer service and communication needs to improve, but I was just happy to get the tree removed.

The workers were prompt, efficient and courteous. All the debris was removed and no damage was done to any of my property. Mark is wonderful to work with. I have already recommended him to family and friends. I could not have been more pleased with the service provided.
Description of Work: Mark was able to give me an estimate within two days and scheduled the job for one week later. Because of another customer's schedule change he was able to do the job the day after the bid. I had five tall trees and a large cypress removed. All the root stumps were ground down. Mark also checked all my other trees to make sure all the root balls were in good condition. Upon is recommendation, I also had two other tall pine trees thinned out.

I called Mark during the week sometime and he said he'd come out on Saturday to give me a bid. He was prompt and courteous. He gave me his opinion about the tree and said he'd charge $700 to remove it. (I had gotten a bid of $2300 a few days before from another company!) I asked when he could do the job and he told me he'd be able to do it on Monday about 11 after another job. On Monday morning, I got a call asking if it would be OK to take out the tree first thing Tuesday morning instead, since their machine had gotten stuck in a couple feet of mud with all the hail and rain going on that day and it was going to have to be towed out. That was fine with me and I appreciated the prompt call letting me know the situation. On Tuesday, the crew got there in the morning as promised, were very polite, and asked me questions about what I wanted. I left even before they actually started, came back 2 1/2 hours later expecting them to still be there, but the tree was gone and so were they. WOW!
Description of Work: Northwest Arbor Care removed an almost 30 inch in diameter Douglas fir tree from our back yard. The area of the yard where the tree was located was very small and there was only a few feet between our fence and the tree and our house and the tree, so things were pretty tight.

Mark was very responsive. He came to provide an estimate the day I called to inquire. He and his crew cut the trees although he ran into some loose wires from sometime ago, I presume. They cut up the wood. He came the day he promised and stayed until they were finished. My neighbor was so impressed she hired him to do her work also. I had contacted two other Angie's list companies. One never showed up or called and the other came after I called a second time but delayed getting me a proposal. They also were iffy about what it would cost to cut down two more trees than planned.
