About us

Hello, my name is Mark Griffiths and I am the owner of NW Arbor Care LLC. I grew up in the greater Northwest. After high school, I joined the United States Marine Corps where I was taught punctuality, a strong work ethic, as well as integrity. Later I became a King Crab Fisherman in Alaska, where I was tested mentally and physically. After ten years in Alaska, I worked for Aspluhnd Tree Experts where I earned my journeyman certificate, and later transferred to WestCoast Tree Care as a Foreman. This is where I learned the residential side of the industry. When I started NW Arbor Care LLC (formerly Northwest Arbor Care) in 2003 my sole vision was to instill my life experiences in my business.

We had a number of overgrown trees in our yard, some of which were dropping large branches. We got three bids from Angies List companies, and selected NW Arbor Care. We were able to schedule the work the day after we called! A crew came in at 8:30 and they were finished by 1. They performed wind sail reduction on four large fir trees, and pruned a maple tree and a cherry tree. They removed all the debris, and even cleaned up our deck. They did a fantastic job. I can't believe how much more light we have in our backyard! The trees look wonderful, and we no longer fear branches falling on our roof.

Mark and his crew are so good and have so much integrity I will use them for all future tree work, and we have a lot of trees. I called Mark to have a tree removed because it was blocking all the sunlight in the garden and killing everything. Mark came by 1/2 hour after I called him and suggested that they skirt up the tree removing branches and removing the excessive bushiness. He explained in detail what was going to happen. Mark gave me the quote for the skirting /wind sail option he also gave me the quote for the removal and stump grinding which was more than double the skirting. He said if it was his tree in his yard he would do the skirting not the removal. The next day he came back with his crew on time and performed the work, the tree is beautiful and allows sunlight in. I had never thought of this option which cost less than 1/2 of the removal and left the tree. They even removed the flowers that were in their way and then replanted them when they were done. Clean up was great.

I could tell Northwest Arbor Care is a first class business from the very start. Mark Griffiths brought his team over at the time we scheduled and had the tree down and chipped up in record time. His employees were professional, efficient and courteous. I would definitely use this service again.

Excellent job from start to finish. Mark is very professional, and not only walked round the yard to go over things before sending us an estimate, but also supervised the work team that actually carried out the pruning and treework. The team arrived promptly and immediately went into action, with one man even getting up on the roof so he could do a good job trimming back the cedar from the gutter line. We were particularly impressed with the work they did on the arbutus. Before it was overly bushy and mis-shapen. They did a really aesthetically pleasing job on it so that now it really enhances that side of the yard.

The tree looks great. Mark Griffiths and his helper arrived on time (while actually earlier than expected). He worked quickly while gladly answering my questions. The work site was completely cleaned up when they completed. The job was done for the estimated price.

The crew showed up promptly and worked throughout the day. They were professional and all knew what they were doing. The fir trees that were cut down were crowded together next to a fence, blocking the sun and had to be removed. They did an excellent job at skirting up the trees. It opened up the area around the trees to let in the sunlight and protect the trees from the wind. Clean up was done throughout the process. We couldn't be happier!

Work crew members Ryan & Nicholas were easy to communicate with & co-operative with the customer. The men worked steadily & efficiently proceeding to finish through rainy weather during the last hour of the job. They did an especially good job on the tree pruning & cleaned up the debris after themselves thoroughly. The customer made a few changes to the scope of the work which the crew readily adapted to carrying out.

We contacted NW Arbor Care to get a bid for the work and Mark responded very quickly. He came out and gave us a written bid the same day. NW Arbor Care's bid was much lower than the bid we got from another highly rated tree service. NW Arbor has done work for our neighbors, who highly recommended them, so we decided to go with Mark. His crew of several guys showed up early and got everything done within a couple of hours. They did a very good job.

Everything went excellent. His estimate was reasonable. I asked him to return to the site because I had a question about the trees that were removed, and he came back the next day for free to make sure everything was ok. He also answered a few questions I had. He explained in detail what he was going to do, and also explained his rationale for determining which trees should be cut down and which ones shouldn't.

Mark came out quickly for an estimate, arriving early. He listened to my requests and changed his recommendations based on how I use my back yard -- he had initially recommended removing one tree, but agreed to clean it up to improve its health after I told him that it shades my bedroom. The work was done 2 days later. I wasn't home when the trees were trimmed, so I can't comment on their work practices. The trees look great, although I was a bit bothered to find that one of my shrubs and a few of my flowers had been trampled, and my trash cans had been knocked over on their way out. They forgot to pull the stump, and had to come back the next day to do that. Also, I thought it was a little odd that they asked for my check to be written to Mark Griffiths and not Northwest Arbor Care, but overall I felt that I'd gotten the $400 worth.

As you can see, I have over 100 reports and they are all great reports. There is no excuse for the trash cans to be knocked down, that is something I would take to my crew about.. We were working in very tight quarters with puddles of water everywhere. If the customer would have advised me of the flowers, I would have replaced the flowers for him, but I was never advised of any problem. As you can see with my reports, I always make things right if there is any issue with the job.

It went very well. In addition, the owner noticed when he was here to give me the bid, that one section of my fence was down (and had been for some time). When he arrived to do the work, he told me that he had stopped at Home Depot and picked up a 4x4 and some cement and would repair the fence for me. I was very pleased with this. Of course he added some additional charges for this extra work. Some people may not have been happy with this, but I was thrilled. His crew removed the tree, they were careful with the fence tha thet limbs were overhanging and the neighbors yard. They hauled it all away and cleaned up the area. All in all a very nice experience and pleasant people.

I'am very happy you were thrilled we were able to help with the fence. I thought it was silly for you to have to pay someone else to come fix the fence, when I was able to do it myself. Charging you for a bag of cement and a 4x4 would be less expensive, than you having to call a fence company, who would only go out there for a minimum charge. It was a pleasure working for you. :)

I called for an estimate based on a report from Angie's List. I already had two estimates and both seemed reasonable. Mark came exactly when he said he would. We started out by walking around the yard/house. He had a tablet with him and jotted notes while we talked. He listened to what I wanted. When I asked his opinion, he was brief and honest--no, that is not an urgent issue, eventually; yes, that is important to deal with right away. He wrote up a contract, aware that I didn't want to spend a great deal right away--he was willing to divide the job up. He gave me a discount based on using Angie's List and he gave another if I was open to having the job done the next day. The price was 1/2 what I had been quoted from another company. The work was done quickly and neatly. The clean-up was good. There was very minimal damage to the gardens because of their proximity to the trees being cut, I was concerned about the amount of unavoidable damage. They were unable to dump the chippings, but Mark volunteered to dump a load in two weeks time, if I called. After the job was done, he came back for a walk-through, checking to make sure what we had agreed upon was what actually got done. I was pleasantly surprised and recommend the company for efficiency and thoroughness.
Description of Work: Mark came on time for the estimate. He used a tablet and a form to keep track of our conversation and then he wrote up the types of tasks and their cost. He agreed to cut down two trees--one large ponderosa and one small short pine, he also trimmed back a cedar, all the trees near or touching the house and trimmed and thinned a large big-leaf maple. He came with a crew the next day and (I was at work) when he finished he called me at work and we arranged a time for a walk-through so he could show me what had been done. The crew left the wood cut in 10" lengths and cleaned up all the chipping and debris.

I was delighted from the time that Mark Griffiths did his estimate to the actual cleanup two days later. We had discussed a three-phase plan: cleaning up the front and back yards (see above), trimming two Japanese maples, and redesigning/replanting a portion of the front yard. Promptly at 8 am, a crew of four went to work on the back yard, cutting down literally dozens of ferns on a wooded hill at the back of the house, plus raking and hauling away years of fallen leaf growth. They were wise enough to leave a row of ferns at the top which left the denuded property still looking attractive. Unasked, they also cleaned up a back patio which was littered with leaves from years of neglect. In the front yard, the crew also made wise decisions in hand-trimming trimming rhodies and other plants. In addition to the overgrown azalea, various shrubs had grown impossibly tall --over 10 feet--and the crew cut and reshaped them. Mark showed up late in the cleanup, and we discussed a second trip for trimming/reshaping two of our three Japanese maples. Mark said, "Why not do them right now?" Next thing I knew, he was in the trees, cleaning out some of the internal growth, getting them ready for the new year, and delivering a commentary on proper trimming of these exotic trees. The last trimming had been done three years ago for over $400; Mark did it for $200. He also saw some ground cover that was spilling over into the parking area, and trimmed it back without being asked; it had not been included in the estimate. I suppose I could have bargained with him, or done some competitive bidding to bring down the price, but sometimes it's simply worth it to pay someone what they're worth for their expertise. Based on the previous reviews here on Angie's List, I decided to go with Northwest Arbor Care on face value and I was elated with the results. Sometime this spring, I'll bring them back to do the last phase of the project: to remove some hideous front yard hedges, move/add some plants, and buy and install fresh ground cover.
Description of Work: We needed an extensive property cleanup: dozens of ferns cut back to encourage fresh growth in both the front and back yards, cutting and reshaping an overgrown 15-foot azalea tree which was blocking a view from a second story window, cutting back ivy, major trimming and shaping of rhodies and other plants after years of overgrowth, and a general raking and cleaning.

I called Mark to get an estimate on 2/09/11 for trimming back our out of shape large front hedge, prune 3 trees and help get rid of blackberry shoots under the trees. He arrived on time, walked around with me to the areas to be worked on to get a complete understanding of what needed to be done. He gave me an excellent estimate and said the work could be completed the next day. We agreed and he gave me a time his crew would arrive. The work was preformed in a professional manner, Mike checked with me on how the progress was going to my satisfaction and did I want the hedge shaped a bit at the bottom. I highly recommend Northwest Arbor Care to any one that wants to get the job done right, the first time! They all were very professional and friendly.

Mark Griffiths came to the house the day after we called him and did a very professional job removing the limbs from our front yard. We discussed the possibility of removing the tree since it has lost so many limbs over the last few years. It's a White Pine and is having problems holding on to its limbs now. Mark said he'd give us a good deal if we do it earlier in the year. He was very informative and very professional and we would recommend this company to anyone who is needing tree maintainance or removal!

NW Arbor Care has been monitoring this tree for several years and keeping it trimmed. Noticed a hard to find crack in the trunk during routine maintenance. Gave us an estimate for the removal which would be difficult b/c the tree was in close quarters. The crew safely took down our tree in small pieces by roping each section and bringing it down. Service was professional. Came on time, took the amount of time described in the bid and cleaned up thoroughly when they were done. No major damage done to property during the removal. Although we were sad to remove the tree, when we saw the crack in the interior sections of the trunk we felt we had made the right decision.

The price on this tree reflects the difficulty. The tree was a Douglas Fir, that was 120 ft tall and 48 inches in diameter, and was growing in the middle of a deck. The roof was a cement tile roof that is very fragile, therefore, every piece had to be roped out including the wood. This was the only way, do to no access with a crane and no other trees around.

The cedar tree was pushing over a concrete retaining wall on one side of our driveway and needed to be removed along with the stump before work could be done on the retaining wall. They also had to contend with electrical and cable wires which they handled by lowering some of the branches with a rope. The retaining wall was leaning at about a 20 degree angle and I was concerned that it would fall over completely before the tree and stump removal was complete. They did an excellent job and the retaining wall was still standing when they left. The worker who was running the stump grinder did a fantastic job of removing the stump and the roots that were pushing on the retaining wall. I would definitely hire Mark and his crew again. A couple of my neighbors were watching them work on my project and were so impressed that they hired them to do tree removal and trimming work in their yards!

I was extremely satisfied with the work of these guys, particularly Mike and Chris who climbed 70-100 feet to do the windsail reductions on the tall evergreens. The trees look great. Branches carefully selected. Not butchered like some other contractors do. They also did very good ornamental pruning on my maples and flowering plum tree that had really gotten out of hand for several years. Mike and Chris each have over 10 years experience I believe with this same company and their skills are obvious. They and two other guys who helped with the branches and chipper worked very well as a team. Also did great clean-up. Mark Griffith should be proud of his team. My mother has used NW Arbor Care twice before (and most recently this September) for some big projects on a large piece of property and has been very pleased with their wor both time. I am now a believer as well. I'd definitely recommend these guys to others.

Mark came the day I called for a quote, thoughtfully considered my concerns and provided what I think was excellent advice.
