About us

Hello, my name is Mark Griffiths and I am the owner of NW Arbor Care LLC. I grew up in the greater Northwest. After high school, I joined the United States Marine Corps where I was taught punctuality, a strong work ethic, as well as integrity. Later I became a King Crab Fisherman in Alaska, where I was tested mentally and physically. After ten years in Alaska, I worked for Aspluhnd Tree Experts where I earned my journeyman certificate, and later transferred to WestCoast Tree Care as a Foreman. This is where I learned the residential side of the industry. When I started NW Arbor Care LLC (formerly Northwest Arbor Care) in 2003 my sole vision was to instill my life experiences in my business.

The entire experience was pleasant even though we had to have our willow cut up. It does look good though!
Description of Work: during the recent ice storm , our willow tree was damaged; limbs split and some branches were lost. We really like the tree so we didn't just want to cut it down completely so we decided to have it trimmed. One company that we called didn't seem too interested in the job so we gave Northwest Arbor Care a call and are very glad we did! They gave us an estimate of the cost and we set up a date for the service which was Feb. 11 in the afternoon. The only glitch was that they didn't show up on the date agreed on. However, the owner called that evening and apologized; the job they were on turned out to be much larger than they anticipated. The owner told us that his crew would be here at 8:00 am Sunday morning to do the job. At 8:00 am they arrived as promised! They promptly got to work and cut off the split limbs, trimmed other branches, ground up the limbs and had everything cleaned up by 8:45! They were prompt, quick, thorough and very professional. They even used hand saws so the neighbors wouldn't be disturbed by chainsaws. The crew was very friendly and knowledgable and simply did a terrific job! We would not hesitate to recommend them for a job of any size and we will use them again if the need arises. All in all, it was a very positive experience and very hassle-free.

During the recent big snow storm, I lost half a dozen large limbs off the fir tree in my backyard. The tree was just my side of the property line between my house and my neighbors, and the limbs stradled the fence between us. We were very lucky none of the fallen limbs hit anything other than the ground, but only 2 limbs had come all the way down, another 4+ remained broken and precarious in the tree. Mark came out during the storm to provide an esitmate and brought down the fir that day before the wind and additional snow could bring them down, potentially causing serious damage. Mark also recommended bringing down the large pine in the backyard that was too large for the space. The root system was disrupting the fence line and the limbs had already encroached on my and the neighbors' house. That tree would wait until after the snow storm. Mark accepted no payment for the work he had done that day, saying he would collect it all when he returned, after the snow, to bring down the pine, and clear away both trees. I came home from work one week later to see that both trees had been cleared, and a beautiful stack of wood remained that could be used for my fireplace. Mark swung by the house later that evening to collect payment. It was the least effort I've ever had to exert with a service/contract provider.
Description of Work: I had two large trees removed from my backyard. Both trees hugged the property line between my house and the neighbors'.

I have mixed reviews for him. I’m not sure why he got good reviews on Angie’s List. They know how to trim trees but they didn’t do a very good clean-up job. They picked up the big limbs but left the little twigs. That ticked me off. I had to go around and rake up all the little twigs and tiny things; they didn’t bother to clean that up. For that price to cut three trees and one bush, they could have at least cleaned up after themselves. They know what they’re doing and the owner came out and we had a plan. But then someone else came out and did it and I told him how much I wanted it cut back and they didn’t cut it back as much as I wanted them to. I don’t know that I would use them again. I rate him low on the price because I showed him the front yard and he quoted me a reasonable price. But when I showed him the backyard, he doubled the price and there wasn’t that much I needed done in the backyard. Also, they smoked in my yard and that made me mad. No one should smoke in their work environment.
Description of Work: I used Northwest Arbor Care for my trees about a month ago. He trimmed my trees.

Response from NW Arbor Care LLC
I have never had a complaint on the quality of clean- up my crew does, but do to it being during the ice storm, we were trying to help as many customers as we could, who needed our service. Raking a yard that has ice and snow makes it almost impossible to get a detailed clean-up. If any of my customers ever have a problem with the clean-up, Please feel free to call me directly at any time. I will also address the smoking issue. My crew and I review the comments once a week and appreciate all comments. This only helps us become a better company. Thank you, Mark Griffiths NWArbor care.

I can't say enough about the service Mark and his crew provided. After several days of snow and ice, we realized that our neighbor's large deodar cedar had partially broken a limb and it was resting on our garage. We were worried that if a professional did not take it all the way off it would damage our garage when it totally fell. We called somewhat late in the afternoon on a Friday and after explaining the situation, Mark said he would try to get someone out that day, even though the light was waning and the roads were a little dicing. A little while later we got a call from Ryan saying they were on their way. When Andrew and Ryan arrived they quickly got to work on the cedar, clearing the garage and identifying many other broken branches that were potential problems that were threatening our garage and driveway. They completed as much work as they could in the light that remained and then promised to be out the next day to finish up trimming all the branches. When they returned on Saturday, they did a lot more work than they expected to clean up the tree and all the limbs and branches to make the tree safe and healthy. At that time, because we realized how professional and excellent they were, we asked them about trimming and pruning our ancient, out-of-control pear and an overgrown magnolia. Andrew explained that they would have to come out on Monday to chip and clean-up after all the work that they had done because their huge truck couldn't navigate our street (it's pretty steep and was very icy) with the way the road was, and if we wanted they could do the work on the other trees at that time and he would give us a price break. We agreed and that's what they did when they came back on Monday, January 20, 2012. As for the finished product(s): all trees look amazing. The cedar looks quite majestic, no longer shaggy and threatening our driveway and garage, and I can't wait for the magnolia and pear to bloom in the spring. One final perk was that they cleared and swept our driveway so well that I think it looks nicer than we've ever gotten it! We will definitely use NW Arbor again. Our yard is full of mature trees that we really don't know what to do with as they are all overgrown and need some TLC. I think that Mark, Andrew, and Ryan are all very knowledgeable experts who would definitely be able to give our trees the help they need and give us the education we need to continue the maintenance on them.
Description of Work: Emergency branch removal after a snow and ice storm brought a large branch (still partially attached to the tree) onto our garage, and tree trimming of a very large cedar. Additional pruning of 2 other trees, including an overgrown pear tree.

Excellent experience! I was very impressed. The crew showed up on time and worked hard to complete the job in one day. I thought that the crew that cut the trees were very experienced and landed the trees exactly where they wanted. I thought that two of the crew did outstanding jobs. Tracy, in reducing and thinning my two lace maples and Chris in cutting the large maple and alders in the back. I had two occasions to request something be done differently. Both times the crew responded with grace and promptly did what I had requested. I will use this company in the future for all my tree care.
Description of Work: Windsailed 3 hemlock, 2 fir trees and one large cedar tree. Cut done one very large and one medium size maple. Cut down 5 alder trees, I also had 4 dogwoods and two lace maples reduced and thinned.

We needed to have a fallen tree (approx. 25-30') removed from our front yard. NW Arbor Care happened to have a crew in the neighborhood and arrived at our house approximately 1-1/2 hours after I called. Within 20 minutes or so they had completely cleared the tree and loaded it into the chipper. It went very well. They did a nice job cleaning up the tree and branches from the yard for a very reasonable price.

The crew was extremely professional, service was performed on time and as discussed and we were very pleased with the work. We selected NW Arbor Care over other tree services because of their high ratings on Angie's list and we were not disappointed. In fact, we were so pleased with the way things were going that we made and served home made muffins and coffee to the crew. They were very polite and appreciative!

We had just purchased a home in an established neighborhood with huge pine trees and a couple of hemlock trees, 5 of them very close together, very close to the house, and hovering over the roof. We searched on Angie's List for arborists, and after seeing excellent reviews for NW Arbor Care, we contacted the owner, Mark Griffiths. He returned our call and came out to give us a quote in a timely manner. He was very helpful in giving advice and helping us to decide whether to take down the trees, and how many. Mark is very knowledgeable in tree care, thorough in answering any questions we had, and very pleasant to work with. He was able to provide a quote promptly on the first initial visit, and also separated it for tree removal costs or stump grinding or both. We were going to wait until PUD removed the 2 trees, which were directly in front of and very close to the other 3 in the front yard which would make it easier for NW Arbor to gain access to the trees. Since the trees were extremely close to the house, we were concerned about damage to the roof while taking them down. Mark said it would be easier with them being removed first, but it wouldn't be a problem, as his crew was very experienced, would work around them, and assured us that our house/roof was safe. So, we scheduled their removal within 1-2 weeks, end of September. (it's now December and the 2 trees are still there waiting for PUD removal) The crew of 5-6 arrived at the scheduled time in the AM and had all 5 large trees down, cut into rounds, remaining brush ground into chips, and everything picked up and cleaned, by late afternoon. They were impressive in watching the crew work together! Would definitely refer Mark and his crew to anyone, and will use them again if ever needed.
Description of Work: Took down a total of 5 trees from front and backyard. Also agreed to return (after PUD removed 2 addidtional trees), to grind a total of 7 stumps, all inclusive of the quoted price.

It went great. He was knowledgeable & professional. He finished quickly. My only regret was not asking him why it cost so much. After thinking on it & consulting with friends I am sure it is because he is an Arborist & knew how to correct the problem with my tree without damaging it. That was very important to me because I did not want to harm the tree.
Description of Work: I have a small apple tree that was growing, primarily, in one direction. The result was the weight of the apples caused the tree to lean heavily in that direction. After examing the tree the Arborist said it will straighten out on its own if it has the opportunity. He said he could do that by pruning it. The pruning would not damage or hurt the tree & it will, over time, straighten itself out. I told him to do it & he did. The tree looks much better now.

We've used Northwest Arbor Care services many times during the past seven years. The owner Mark and his employees are always very professional, personable, hard working, honest and price if fair. I highly recommend this company for tree and landscape services.
Description of Work: The owner Mark came out to look at three damaged trees our neighbor topped and cut on our property without permission so she could have a view. Mark was very professional about the incident providing options, we decided to replace the trees since the damage to the trees could not be repaired. Mark offered to pick up three 15-20 foot trees and plant them for a reasonable price and provide a letter I delivered to my neighbor about future stress to a large tree if she cut the main root. In addition to replacing the three trees we hired the company to windsail reduction many trees on our property.

During a recent windstorm the top portion ( about 60 feet) of a very large maple tree broke off and landed in our driveway, blocking the driveway , covering our front yard, just missing the house and completely blocking access to the vehicles in our garage. I put in a frantic call to Mark ( we had used his company before with very good results).. He arrived with a crew less than 2 hours later and did a great job on very short notice. Might I add that this was on a Seahawk Sunday morning! We will definitely use his company again.
Description of Work: On an emergency basis, removed the top half of a very large maple tree that fell into our driveway, cutiing the tree into sections , removing the wood and returning the next morning with a chipper to complete the job. Did a very nice job of cleaning up.

Mark Griffiths came over and looked and the trees that were dead/dying and came up with a plan. His scheduling was 2 weeks out, but later her called with a cancellation time and they were able to move up the date. They are licensed, bonded and he said his employees had been with him for some time. He also gave me his insurance contact which I did call. They arrived on time and the crew boss (Chris) was very professional. They did exactly what I needed and then clean up the sawdust from the cutting and my driveway. i watched them climb and they were very professional, nimble and very safe. I will hire them again to sail other trees on my property. i have also referred them to two friends.

I was pleased with most of the experience. One exception was the work they did to prune a plum tree. They left a large hole in the middle of that tree. Another issue was Mark's bidding. The final price was not clearly defined ahead of time causing me to call and clarify what was written and even then Mark's team came up with a different price both times they came to do work.

Response from NW Arbor Care LLC
The customer was given a written estimate that stated the additional $100.00 for removing deadwood on another tree he also wanted done. It was discussed with the customer that the plum tree had a rotten lead in the middle and if not removed it would break off causing damage to the rest of the tree. My bids never change, unless there is extra work wanted by the customer. On this occasion it was something that was talked about ahead of time and written in quotations on the contract. As you can see from our reports we do quality work. In all the years I have been in business, I have not once changed the priced of my quote. This report was a shock, considering we even gave the customer five azalea's for free. The customer was happy with the work when we did the final walkthrough.

I called NW Arbor and asked for a quote. They came over the next day and left me a quote for $412 to remove the 25ft Spruce tree from my front yard, including the stump removal. I called back and scheduled the work to be done at 2PM on 9/21. The crew of 5 or 6 guys arrived early (approx 12:30) on the 21st. They had the tree limbed, cut down and removed in a very short time -- less than an hour. They cleaned up the debris very nicely. The stump grinder came out around 2Pm and took care of that very quickly too. I was very satisfied with the work performed and the price.

We were very pleased with the whole process! The grinding of the plum tree stump required the worker to operate in a very confined area to avoid damage to the sprinkler and retaining wall. The fir trees were very close to our fence and there was no damage to the fence. The only damage that occurred was a broken sprinkler line but they advised that this was a possibility and in actuality was not their fault. The roots from the tree over time had forced the sprinkler line up to the surface and hitting the line when grinding the stump was unavoidable.
Description of Work: Removed two large fir trees, ground the stumps, trimmed two cedars from a neighbor's yard (all 4 were infringing and negatively impacting our yard), removed a diseased dwarf plum tree and ground the stump from our yard, and trimmed back an out of control laurel from another neighbor's yard. They also ground a small azalea stump.

Overall, I was satisfied with the work and responsiveness to the issue I had with the downspout. I would recommend Mark and his crew to perform tree removal jobs.
Description of Work: I had 5 leland cypresses that were terrorizing my yard - they were growing too fast and I opted to have them removed rather than prune them on a yearly basis and watch them continue to get too big. Mark responded the very next day to give me an estimate, and we struck a deal to have the trees removed, along with a hinoki cypress, large rhodie, 5 azalea plants and four large cedar shrubs that were pathetic looking. He also topped and trimmed a huge arborvitea and stump ground the area where the trees and bigger shrubs were. His crew was quick and efficient and cleaned up the area nicely when they left. Unfortunately, the stump grinder dented a downspout I had on a low hanging roofline as it was a tight fit to get the grinder into the back yard. When I called Mark, he had his crew promptly remove it and they replaced it with a new downspout . They offered to paint it, but I declined, as I decided to paint it myself with the house trim some other day. All in all, I was satisfied by the prompt and efficient work, and particularly pleased that they addressed my downspout issue quickly. I would use them again.

Mark took the time to tell me about the trees, the correct way to remove dead branches on the dwarf and the correct way to prune. He noted that the dwarf has a beautiful trunk and suggested pruning it up high enough so we could enjoy the beauty of the shape of the trunk (think Bonsai). He took a look at the stump and said no problem to grind it out. Mark is friendly, knowledgeable and made sure I knew exactly what his plan was and I agreed with it. He wrote me out a bid and came over a couple days later to do the work. When I came home from work that evening I was AMAZED at the differences the pruning of the Japanese Maples made. The way the light filters through the beautiful red leaves now is just beautiful. The trunk on the dwarf is a real showpiece, great call Mark! The stump was gone, as if it had never been there. Actually my whole yard was as if no one had ever been there, not a twig left behind. And Mark and his crew were gracious enough to move some truck tires I had forgotten would be in the way of them accessing the backyard and never mentioned a word about the extra work. I called him immediately told him how satisfied I was and settled the bill - the bill came in at exactly what he quoted me.
Description of Work: I have a Japenese Maple and a Dwarf Japenese Maple that were in desperate need of pruning. Both were overgrown and had not been pruned for at least 11 years. These are beautiful and valuable trees that I wanted to make sure I had a true Arborist prune as I was concerned about damaging the health of the trees or ending up with a shape problem that could take years to grow out - if ever. I also had a huge stump left in my yard from when I had some very mature Evergreens cut down several years ago that needed to be ground out.

This was a large job requiring a skilled team to climb and remove large limbs over our home. I felt comfortable that they were safe and skilled in this close quarter work around our home. The other trees also required climbing and careful removal not to damage the healthy trees next to them. The ground team was thorough in their clean up and left the place raked up and blown clear. I have used several different tree services but would definitely call NW Arbor Care for my next project.
Description of Work: Had a large job to deal with several trees on our property that need to be thinned or removed, including a very large pair of cedars growing over the roof line that need to be carefully limbed and thinned to protect the house. Also, need to remove a tree in a fence line that blown over. Finally, had a tall cedar that had died and was decaying and would not last through the first winter storm.

A perfectly excellent experience. We called Mark on a Saturday for an estimate. He came out Monday morning, talked with us about what needed to be done, and was obviously very knowlegable about trees. He even gave us advice on how we can prune another bush we have in future when it needs it. The cost estimate he provided was very fair, and he arranged to have a crew out the next morning. The crew did a terrific job, were very fast, and completely cleaned up the property after they finished. Everyone was extremely prompt, very nice, and professional.
Description of Work: Removal of a dead Spruce tree, pruning of a Japanese Maple and Black Locust tree growing over the roof of our house, pruning of a Plum tree, and topping a Laurel hedge tree.
