About us

Hello, my name is Mark Griffiths and I am the owner of NW Arbor Care LLC. I grew up in the greater Northwest. After high school, I joined the United States Marine Corps where I was taught punctuality, a strong work ethic, as well as integrity. Later I became a King Crab Fisherman in Alaska, where I was tested mentally and physically. After ten years in Alaska, I worked for Aspluhnd Tree Experts where I earned my journeyman certificate, and later transferred to WestCoast Tree Care as a Foreman. This is where I learned the residential side of the industry. When I started NW Arbor Care LLC (formerly Northwest Arbor Care) in 2003 my sole vision was to instill my life experiences in my business.

Mark was extremely prompt, friendly, and professional. He was also very straightforward, looking at the job and writing out individual prices as we went, then gave a reduced price to do it all at once. His price was fair, but we received a lower bid from someone the neighbors recommended, so we went with them. I felt that Mark would have been a great choice as well and will consider using him in the future.
Description of Work: Mark estimated the cost of pruning a very long monster 10-12 foot high hedge, reduce the height of many trees and shrubs (we are in an area with tree height restrictions) and remove some trees and brush.

I called and left a message on Thursday Sept. 5 and within a half hour Mark, the owner, called back and set up an appt. to come out and give an estimate the next day. Mark was very professional and gave me two quotes one for just the two trees that we wanted removed plus grinding out the stump of one of the trees. He than gave me a quote for clearing some trees away from the house and trimming up our apple, plum and pear tree. He gave us a discount for having all the work done at once. An appt. was set up to have the service done on Monday Sept. 9th. Monday the crew arrived and went through all the details with us and they got to work right away. They started at about 8:30 in the morning and were completely done by 1:00. I was very impressed with the job that they did and the clean up that was done. They did not have the equipment with them to grind out the stump on Monday but said somebody would be back in a few days to do the grinding and on Thursday a crew member came out and completed the grinding. My only concern. On Angie's list it shows that they accept checks and credit cards for payment and I was not able to pay with a credit card, which was my preferred method to pay, and had to pay by check. Besides this little blip I would and will have this company come back out and do more work on the trees we have around our yard.

They came out with a crew of 4 guys and did a meticulous job taking down a huge tree without disturbing the trees around. Everything was very professional. The owner gave me an estimate and was out the next week to do the job. They let my neighbor keep the wood and cleaned up well. It couldn't have worked out any better. Their quote was also between $400-800 less than the 2 other companies I got estimates from.

This company does very high quality work. There were many people at the property on the day we agreed upon, and they were all early. They introduced themselves by name and confirmed all the work that had to be done. The work itself was done very well and when the crew ran into problems moving a maple, they called me right away to get input and agreed with my decision not to move the tree. They were knowledgeable about not topping firs or cutting off branches asymmetrically or causing pools of water to collect in the trunk. At the end of the day, the trees had been trimmed appropriately but they still looked beautiful. Some (really) minor issues I should mention for thoroughness: 1) Because the man who gave me the estimate left the company prior to the work being done, Mark and the crew had not been able to read through the scope of work or the cost estimate beforehand. 2) Although Mark the owner called me and communicated with me prior to the day, he was not able to be there the morning of. I would have appreciated a heads up about this, as the crew that day was very punctual but needed me to walk through the whole scope of work with them again (which I would have done anyway). I did need to call back at the end of the day to check in because our birch's trunk needed chipping, which they immediately agreed to. It was all done a couple days later. 3) The birch that was cut down was left in 18 in rounds as promised but was left on the lawn instead of the stone patio, which kills the grass and leaves big divots. I am learning the hard way how heavy a tree is to move, even when cut into logs. 4) This may not be the cheapest company, but they aren't the most expensive either. They do high quality work and I think the price was worth it. Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend them to my neighbors. In fact, they were so polite to my neighbors and quiet while doing the work that the neighbors asked yesterday when I was going to get the tree cut down. Just know that they are a popular company, so you have to be patient and follow-up with phone calls.
Description of Work: Trimmed all the trees on the property and 'windsailed' five very tall >50 ft trees, attempted to move a Japanese maple, and cut down a birch on the corner of the property, chipped the trunk. P.S. For full disclosure, I am writing this review as one of the Angie Cash $10 offers

When I called for an estimate, the estimator (Mark, the owner) came promptly the next day. The price was fair and he seemed competent. We scheduled the service for the following week. The two-man crew that arrived was polite and got right to work. I DID have to point to some key words in their work order to clarify the scope of work. They had arrived thinking they were to fell just one tree when the work order called for three. While the crew was working, I had second thoughts about leaving one ailing tree standing, so I called the owner and asked him if the crew could expand their scope of work on the spot. He readily agreed and quoted another, still reasonable price. I told the crew about my conversation with their boss, and they had no problem tackling the fourth tree. I had expected to write a check for the service as soon as the crew was done, but the senior crewman didn't think he was supposed to handle payment. He was apparently new to the outfit. The owner called me the next day, and we arranged for him to stop by at the end of the day to pick up a check.

Unlike other tree care providers, NW arbor care was always very responsive to our calls and if I went to voicemail, they immediately called back. Their service was of good quality and was efficient. Our complaint of their service has to do with their punctuality. They told us they would show up at 11 am. But they showed up at 1 pm. Also, they refused to give us a receipt of services rendered and payment received and instead insisted on hand-writing a receipt of payment on their original estimate. These two things caused a lot of time to be wasted on my wife's part, because she works full time and had to take more time out of her day than expected.

The invoice for the work was left on their door step, prior to the job. This customer does not live at this house. I was not award that the house was being sold and no one lives there. I was never told not to leave it at the door step. Our original estimate sheet serves as the invoice if the work is completed. My crew does not carry receipt books. I apologize for this but this is how I have been doing it for years and it works for my company.

I was very impressed with the professionalism of the provider's representatives. They definitely had a "can-do" attitude with the work we requested even with removal of one of the trees in an area where many other plantings were placed. They had to be most careful by removing one of the plants during the process and then replacing it when the tree was removed. I will use them again and have just told my neighbor about them as they are looking for a referral.

The roof of my neighbor's shed was damaged during the process of cutting the maple tree. When the estimate was done I told Northwest I wanted to keep the wood for firewood and was told the crew would cut the tree into small pieces that could be split. Instead the tree was cut into large rounds most of which a single person or even two people, could not move because of the size of the rounds. We did manage to cut a cord of wood but there were a lot of rounds left over. I called Northwest back and asked if they could give me a quote for removing the rest of the wood. Northwest told me three times they would come out to look at the job and give me a price but they never showed up and never called to say why they couldn't come out. At the time I originally discussed the job with the owner I asked if the cost for cutting down a small tree in my front yard and the removal of three stumps from some shrubs that had been cut down by a previous owner could be included in the quote. Northwest told me these costs would be included and did cut down the small tree but did not remove the stumps from the shrubs. The quote also included full clean up but Northwest left two small logs from the maple tree in my front yard and left sawdust all over my backyard. I am now having to find an alternative way to dispose of the wood and just received a quote for $875 to haul the remaining wood away. Right now I am concerned the wood in the yard will attract termites and carpenter ants that will do damage to my house.

I would like to address that I never received a call from this customer regarding the pick up of the wood. I have a list of people who pick up the wood at no charge to my customers. I know this because I am the owner of Northwest Arbor Care. We did this job 4 months ago. I never in the 4 months heard about any damage to a shed or any other place in her or her neighbors property. My reputation is everything to me. I went above and beyond with this customer who was not able to pay in full. I set up a payment plan for her. If this would have been the case, I believe she would have never paid the bill in full. I work hard to please my customers and make things right.

The estimator indicated that the camellias and pieris japonicas would be hand pruned; however, when the crew arrived they prepared to shear the camellias and pieris shrubs again. After speaking with the company arborist, the crew went ahead to hand prune and shear. The cleanup was thorough and efficient.

The work was excellent. The crew of three was very professional, used appropriate safety precautions, and worked hard the entire time they were at our place. They cleaned up after themselves nicely. We will definitely use them again (and probably sooner than 25 years this time!)
Description of Work: We hadn't had any arbor work done on the house in the 25 years we have lived here, so we needed a lot of work. Mark's team removed three trees, a huge shrub, pruned additional shrubs, pruned and shaped a big rhododendron, trimmed evergreens over the house, raised the skirt of a big cedar and trimmed branches that were endangering power lines.

Mark came out as scheduled and gave me a bid for several options for my trees. There were 3 very tall cypress trees (much higher than the electric wires) with multiple very tall separate trunks on each tree, located close to the electrical wires, and one tall trunk had recently fallen. He noted that it was rotted at the base and the other trunks of the same tree would likely fall in the near future. We decided to remove all three trees, and he said they could do the work later that day. The guys showed up when he promised and got right to work. They were amazing to watch while climbing those tall, thin tree trunks, swaying at the top, and had all of the trees down in no time. They cut them all into rounds and left them in a pile, and put all of the branches in their chipper. They carefully cleaned up everything. The only negative part was that one of the workers spit on the ground alot, but other than that, they were all hard working and pleasant. The next day, another worker came with a stump grinder, turning the stumps into a huge pile of great mulch in quick order, and cleaned up everything as well. He mentioned that this stump mulch is great for the yard - better than what you buy in the bags. A week or so later, Mark called to see if someone would be home that day so he could stop by to collect the payment. He stopped by later that afternoon to collect and all was well. The $900 price noted above included tax and he gave a 10 percent discount for Angie's List. I would definitely recommend NW Arbor Care. They were professional and hard working. I could have possibly saved a little money by shopping around more, but based on the Angie's reviews, Mark's care and professionalism, and the convenience of having the work done so soon, it was worth it for them to do the work that same day.

NW Arborcare provided a detailed estimate within two days after our call. Once we accepted the estimate, they set the date for the work within a week. They said they would come "early in the day," which to us meant before noon. However, they finally arrived at 2:00 with a crew of several workers. Once the work was underway, is was completed amazingly fast and clean-up afterwards was efficient and thorough. Everything was finished by 4:00.

This is either the third or fourth time I've used Northwest Arbor Care to do a major cleanup of our property. The house is small but the house is surrounded by many trees including three Japanese maples, a standard maple tree and several hemlocks. Mark Griffiths has become both the man whose crews clean up the property and my personal "consultant" in trying to figure out the proper plans and ground cover in this unique property. This year, he and his crew (including at least one of his sons) trimmed and shaped the various trees as well as large plants including rhodies. I have hired Japanese maple specialists, and paidf top dollars, to have those trees shaped properly. Mark tosses them in as part of his overall services and does them even better than the so-called specialists I once hired. We have a small easement on our street, approximately as wide as a mini-van, and our garden parallels it. For years the line between the two was blurred and looked like a weed-infested mess. This year, Mark suggested we put in a wooden barrier to separate the two areas, and he hired and supervised the installation of the barrier: a project that included the installation of rebar to strengthen it. Mark also chopped back ivy that was taking over our back yard, hauled out a decaying brick walk in the back yard and substituted red gravel, re-gravelled a walkway in the front of the house, and purchased and installed more ground cover plants. I set up the project and didn't come out until it was finished. I trust Mark that much: he knows the property and knows how to take care of it. He is the most cooperative, thorough grounds and trees specialist I have ever worked with. He is virtually family, even though I see him about once a year. Update - once again, Northwest Arbor is my go-to company for all my gardening needs. This year, they pulled down a dangerously leaning pine tree, cleaned up all the plant life in the front of the house, and trimmed two Japanese maple trees. The Japanese maple trees, in previous years, have required us to use a specialist at significant cost. Mark Griffiths and his crew accomplished the trimming and shaping of those trees, plus all their other work in less than 90 minutes. I just called him today to do yet a second job that will include transplanting trees, bushes and other projects. I could not ask for a better partner for maintaining our property.

We bought our house 6 months ago from a lovely lady who thought her yard was an extension of the Seattle Arboretum. It was pretty, but completely overwhelming, especially for a family with three small kids who just wanted a yard to run around in. I called Mark and he was able to accomodate my very busy schedule by not only coming out that day to give me a (very reasonable) quote for the work, but he got a fabulous crew of three guys out the very next morning to do the work. I was particularly pleased with the fact that Mark had very clearly walked his crew through my situation with the crew so they weren't walking in blind. My only gripe - and it's a really tiny one - is that I was expecting them around 8:00 AM and they didn't show up until 9:00. But honestly, it wasn't that big of deal, especially since 1.) They knew what they were doing, 2.) They were incredibly communicative with me, and 3.) OMG did they do a good job. My yard looks so much better (lots of compliments from neighbors!), and they were especially adept at helping me figure out which jobs would be most cost effective for them to do (vs. a landscaper, who would typically handle some of the smaller issues that I have), as well as sifting through what needed to be done immediately vs. jobs which could be put off until later (since overhauling my mini-Arboretum is going to be a long-term ordeal). These guys were efficient, friendly, and exactly the kind of people you want to come work on your lawn. So glad I found them, and I'll definitely be calling them again!
