Description of Work: Total remodel of kitchen, including removal of two walls, reconfigure ceiling, New cabinets, counter tops, move plumbing, and New lighting. Contractor was wonderful. As were all subcontractors. Project ran long because of the problems with Cabinets. Wrong sizes on several, warped door, incorrect drawer fronts. Had to reorder several, more than once. Because of these issues a lot of things got back logged. Now that it is done, I love it!

After a leak caused water damage in our kitchen, we had to have our kitchen wall repaired, our cabinets re-hung and our kitchen counter replaced. We decided to upgrade our kitchen sink and faucet while we were at it. Dan responded right away to our call (and every call after that) and came up with a plan that was affordable. He was clear about what we needed to do (e.g. where to pick out tile, the sink, etc.) and had the whole project wrapped up in much less time than we anticipated. The quality of the work is very good and the workers always left the kitchen neat and tidy when they left for the day. Dan has great communication skills. I would recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: Repaired kitchen wall that had been torn down to the studs including texturing and a coat of primer. Replaced trim around window. Rehung cabinets that had been removed because wall behind them was wet. Tore out damaged kitchen counter and old sink. Installed new sink and faucet and built new counter. Placed stone countertop & glass tile backsplash.

They checked to see what the problem was and told me what they needed to do. They did a great job and I am happy with their work. They went above and beyond the call of duty. They co-ordinated with the plumbing company to get the job done correctly.
Description of Work: They checked for dry rot in my bathroom. They removed and replaced the tub and replaced the floor tile.

Almost everything that could go wrong did: Workers ripped plaster and lath off an entire wall, contrary to explicit instructions to leave it intact. Workers framed out window at wrong height, despite detailed plans specifying the height. Workers knowingly put insulation in bays where remodel can lights (i.e. non IC-rated) would be installed, against code and common practice. Drywall was stated to be complete, but sections of walls lacked drywall, outlet cutouts were sloppily way too large, chase area was drywalled over (against explicit instructions to leave it open), etc. The contractor fixed some of these mistakes (on our nickel), but ultimately decided he "didn't like screwing up", and walked off the job. We explained how much this would screw us over (difficult to hire someone to pick up someone else's unfinished/botched job; kitchen not ready for a mudding crew), and he simply did not care. Wire out at wrong height. Shoddy drywall. Not ready to mud. Never acknowledged.
Description of Work: We contracted this firm to: remove a non-load-bearing wall, do minor framing work, insulate, hang and mud drywall, hang a slab door, install a new window, do miscellaneous finish carpentry (bondo repairs on casing, patch oak floor, new baseboard), and remove construction debris in a kitchen remodel. Contract was for time and materials with the homeowner (a professional kitchen and interior designer) providing blueprints and a detailed task list. There wasn't enough space below to explain that most of the above was not done. Fundamentally, I think this job was beyond the skill set of this contractor. (In fact, on day two, he flippantly informed us that he didn't plan on hanging the slab door because it seemed complicated -- and didn't seem to understand why he should have told us this up front to give us time to find another carpenter.) The whole team displays a disrespectful arrogance that drives them to rationalize deviating from floor plans and homeowner instructions.

Response from Metropolitan Construction & Remodeling Inc
WE'VE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR OVER 15 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH SUCH A SMALL JOB. WE DID OUR BEST TO COMMUNICATE WITH HER, BUT THIS JOB SEEMED DOOMED FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. OUR CONTRACT WITH THE CUSTOMER STATED THAT WE WOULD WORK ON A "TIME & MATERIAL" BASIS AND COMPLETE AS MUCH AS WE CAN IN 3 DAYS WITH A 2 MAN CREW. BY THE END OF THE SECOND DAY, IT WAS CLEAR THAT THIS PERSON WAS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH US (TO PUT IT MILDLY). SHE WAS UNCOMFORTABLY BLUNT TO BEGIN WITH AND ENDED UP BEING DOWNRIGHT RUDE BY THE END OF THE SECOND DAY. WE MET WITH THE HOMEOWNER IN EFFORT TO COMPROMISE AND COME TO SOME COMMON GROUND. AFTER THE MEETING, IT WAS CLEAR THAT THIS JOB WAS LOST. SO, WE ONLY CHARGED HER $465.91, WHICH WAS OUR MATERIAL COSTS, AND CHARGED NOTHING FOR THE LABOR WHICH CAME TO $787.64. WE VALUE OUR CUSTOMERS AND HAVE NOTHING TO GAIN BY MISTREATING THEM. WE FIGURED WITH THE LABOR SAVINGS, THIS CUSTOMER CAN HIRE A DIFFERENT CONTRACTOR TO COMPLETE THE WORK, WHO HOPEFULLY WILL BE MORE COMPATIBLE WITH HER. WE WISH THIS CUSTOMER THE BEST OF LUCK.

Honest, professional, friendly, and detail oriented. Dan Stuper and his crew at Metro Construction were a great choice for our bathroom remodel. Dan is one of those guys you simply know the moment you meet him you are in good hands. He showed up on time and gave us a quote, which by the way, he didn't go over. He kept us in the loop from start to finish with a realistic time line. He contracted with specialists who each did outstanding jobs. At one point he noticed he did not bid putting in a heating duct so rather than charge us he simply put one in for free. We also had him install a new front door. The supply house made an error with a shelf on the door. Dan had his crew come back and fixed it for free. If you are thinking about a remodel, Dan is your man! Great work, fair price, pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: Our walk in closet was converted into a master bath which included hiring and coordinating for plumbing, fixtures, tile, sheet rock, etc.
From start to finish, Dan was upfront with his costs, meticulous in insuring that the quality of work was high, and really co-ordinated his sub-contractors well. We are hoping to work with him again in the future for other large projects such as re-finishing the basement.
Description of Work: Dan and his crew performed demolition and remodeling of our kitchen and converted a half bath into a laundry room. We have a 1913 Craftsman home and wanted to maintain the style of the rest of the home and do as little structural change as possible, while creating a modern kitchen which opened up into the dining room. He oversaw the demolition of the pre-existing kitchen and 2 walls, rebuilt all four walls, upgraded the electrical and had recessed lighting placed, directed the templating of the quartz countertops, refurbished the wood floors, painted the kitchen and dining room, and had all the appliances hooked up. The cost quoted above does not include: cost of appliances, cost of plumbing work, and custom cabinetry and engineered quartz countertops.

Dan was great. Although I needed to postpone the project until next spring-he was very patient in answering all my questions and helping to talk through different scenarios that would work for my very small, 1940's home. He was very responsive-returned my call within minutes. He showed up on time for our initial meeting-even a few minutes early.
Description of Work: Dan put together a bid for a remodel of my kitchen and bath.

Dan was very prompt in answering my voicemail and came out to give us an estimate within a few days. He helped us find the best price on the doors which we wanted and scheduled the work as soon as the doors arrived. Dan kept in touch on a daily basis and immediately addressed any concerns which we had. The work was completed to our satisfaction.

I had him deal with my wife in picking out the windows and never heard a complaint, that is priceless! The work was done very well and he even cleaned up after himself. The project went faster than I thought, it only took two days. We will look forward to Dan coming back to do the rest of the windows in the house as we can afford them.
Description of Work: We bought a new front door and had Dan install it. We loved it and had him install three new vinyl windows for us.

Metropolitan Construction finished off my basement during the past few months. I've used Dan for years on small things he's always done a great job! This job was a great experience! I liked Metro Construction and all the sub contractors involved (especially his plumbers!). The attention to detail was appreciated and the work was done in a clean and timely way. I'd recommend them to anyone who needs a good general contractor!!
Description of Work: Converted an unfinished basement approximately 800 square feet into a living space including one master bathroom complete with a steam shower, two bedrooms, and one laundry room. They 'turn keyed' the project from start to finish.

The project was estimated at 8-10 weeks and 40,000. They coordinated with the plumbers to install new pipes to the upstairs and completed the framing, insulation and sheet-rocking. After plumbing was installed, custom tile work was done, then flooring. During the project, all floor areas where kept swept clean and the contractor checked in every day to make sure that the workers were there on time and picked up after themselves. There were mid-project changes to the plan which required extra coordination with an electrician and carpenter which were accommodated cheerfully and with minimal increase to the budget. The windows where installed and finish work done on time. The entire project took 10 weeks even with the changes, and came in only slightly over the original estimate. Overall, the entire project went very smooth and there were no unexpected surprises even though the house is 70 years old. Dan was very communicative during the project and was great at explaining everything.
Description of Work: Remodel of unfinished attic into bedroom, sitting room, bathroom and closet area. Project included framing, insulation, sheet-rocking, new windows, bamboo flooring, custom tile shower with custom cut glass, lighting, electrical updates including new panel, new roof vents, custom baseboards and window/door frames and finish work.
