I choose to get an estimate from 5 Star because they seemed to be willing/able to do all three jobs--ceramic tile, new hardwood installation, and refinishing old hardwood flooring. They (George) answered my request for an estimate promptly. Because the work involved essentially three different jobs, they were quite flexible in scheduling the work around our work, holiday, and travel schedules. The workpersons arrived promptly at the time scheduled and completed the job by the time promised (which was actually quite short). This involved working on Saturday on two separate occasions. The workmanship was excellent. The installers were friendly and polite, did not smoke or play radios, and cleaned up everything very nicely. The representative from 5 Star (George) was always available to answer questions or field requests and followed up to ask if we were satisifed with the work during the various stages of the job. I had been told that one should not use a service that claims to be able to do different kinds of flooring, but should hire separate contractors for each flooring type. This turned out NOT to be necessary. When the intallers arrived and were not the same people whom I had met from or at 5 Star, I was suprised and a bit concerned. The installers were great, but I should have been told that the installers would be a new set of faces. The work was completed and the final price was the same as the original estimate, which seemed quite reasonable, although I did not get any other full bids, the cost of the ceramic tile portion of the job was considerably less than one estimate that I had received for that portion of the work.
Description of Work: They removed carpet from a bathroom-bedroom suite and replaced the bathroom floor with ceramic tile and the bedroom floor with new hardwood flooring. They also refinished the hardwood flooring in the remainder of that level of the house. This was done on a 15 year old house on Mercer Island.

The first problem was that the worker did not show on the appointed day, Oct 20. When I called, my contact person (George?) finally figured out that some how the work order had been erased from the board or misplaced. He rescheduled it for a week later. I had returned from a trip on Oct. 18th in order to be in town for the 20th, so I was not pleased. The work was done in an orderly fashion on the 27th. The worker was diligent and professional. Afterwards, I realized that since the commercial carpet was lower than the original one, there were gaps on the side between the wall and the carpet. I talked to my contact man, said that it wasn't their fault, and asked what could be done. He said that he would get back to me. Later I talked to another professional and a few other people who had had similar work done, and they said that 5 Star should have been aware of the problem and suggested a way to fix it. This company may have better communicators but my contact person was not one of them.
Description of Work: I contacted 5 Star flooring because of the reviews on Angie's List. The company took out 26-year old carpeting and pads on stairs and put in new commercial carpeting. The work was done in one day. They supplied the carpeting and pad that I had chosen.

The experience was wonderful. Eric came to the house with many samples to choose from. He was very professional, pleasant and did not waste our time. I had a hard time deciding, so he returned and left samples with me to look at and compare and decide. Once I decided, and installation date was scheduled; 1/29/11. I was spending Christmas in Oregon, and planned to return on 1/28/11. My car broke down before I left, and took a couple of days to repair. Feeling panicky, I called the installers to reschedule. They were very gracious, and told me to call when I go home to reschedule. I called late Friday afternoon, and we scheduled the installation for today. They showed up, on time, and ready to work. We weren't able to move the larger pieces of furniture, so they did, and were very careful and gentle with our things. The installation went great. We watched them working and were impressed with their teamwork; they have obviously done this many times, and paid attention to the details. The end result is a floor that I love. I would be happy to recommend them to anyone I know who is in need of new flooring.
Description of Work: I had old, worn carpet throughout my house. I also have dogs; through elderly dogs and puppies, the carpet was also stained. I reached the point where the carpet was not worth one more cleaning. I had the carpet removed, and lived with plywood floors while I searched for the right flooring. 5StarFlooring installed laminate flooring and new molding in my living room and hallway.
This is my second experience with 5-Star Flooring, and, like the first experience, it went virtually flawlessly. "Andy" Anderson met me at the appointed time to do a walk-through, bringing some carpet and flooring samples with him based on my description of the hardwood flooring. I was able to select the carpet and flooring from the samples he brought, and a few days later he e-mailed me an estimate. I was literally replacing the entire kitchen, and upon completion of that work I felt my initial selection of flooring was not going to look that good. Living near the new 5-Star Store in Bothell, I picked up the sample of the other flooring he thought might go well, and it turned out to be perfect. Because of delays in completing other interior work I put the job off several times, but never once did Andy or George complain. The flooring and carpet installation is excellent, and the refinishing of the hardwood flooring - well, I think this was a major factor in my house selling virtually for my asking price in TWO weeks after it went on the market! I am so confident of receiving fair and good value from 5-Star I did not get quotes from any other flooring firms. I don't think I can give any better recommendation than this.
Description of Work: Laid new sheet flooring in kitchen and adjoining bathroom; laid new carpet in upstairs family/entertainment room; laid new carpet in two stairwells to lower level; laid new carpet in lower level bedroom and adjoining "dressing" room; refinished hardwood floors in living/dining room, hallway and two bedrooms.

Timely, efficient, friendly, helpful. I mean, we live in a downtown condo and I always worry about how things will go with neighbors, use of the elevator, etc., but these guys were wonderful And initially, George brought carpet samples to our apartment so I could make a decision right here where the carpet would be going. He had some excellent recommendations and knowledge about what to consider regarding high tread areas, etc.
Description of Work: I'm not sure of the price, but it was way less than the other estimates I received for EXACTLY the same carpet. George came out, measured the rooms, drew a diagram, and when the installers arrived everything had been precut so it took much less time than if they had tried to cut the carpet in our garage. It took about 5 hours, maybe 6 for 3 rooms to have existing carpet removed, new padding and carpet installed. Amazing. And they hauled everything away. I can't recommend them highly enough.
Eric responded to my e-mail quickly and was out to my place within a few days with samples to show me. He helped me to decide between the different floorings and carpeting. An estimate was given shortly after he came out. He then came back out with the samples again to help me decide the colors etc. He left the samples with me so I could really make up my mind. After I decided on this an appointment for the installation was made on what was the best time for me. The flooring and carpeting were done in 2 days and the guys who did were great. They helped me place the furniture back in place after it was done. My flooring looks great and the carpeting looks great too. I'm very satisfied with the work.
Description of Work: I wanted to replace the carpeting in my living room and dining area in my condo with hardwood floors. Also wanted to replace the carpeting in three other rooms. I had laminated hardwoods placed and new carpeting place.

George was knowledgeable, punctual and professional at both the appointments we had. I was very interested in getting hardwood flooring for the entire first floor of the house. George was very helpful with suggestions, but in the end I just couldn't afford 5-Star's price, whether it was getting the hardwood flooring or carpeting.
Description of Work: I called to inquire about hardwood flooring and George came out for an initial consultation and measuring. He was very nice, professional, and really seems to know his job. The initial price he quoted seemed high, but we agreed that he should come back with some samples of hardwood flooring and also carpet, as an alternative. He returned at the appointed time and date and showed me the samples. Again, he was very nice. However, after being given the written estimate of the cost involved, we decided it was just too expensive to proceed.
We picked 5-Star via Angie's List and didn't really look at any other company. Eric was out to our house only a couple of days after our call with a ton of samples (laminate wood flooring) for us to choose from. He was thoroughly knowledgeable about the entire line of products sold by 5-Star and patiently answered our questions. We were never pushed or persuaded into any particular direction with regards to product. Thoroughly priced estimates came a couple days later. After he left we decided to go with a different type of material instead (engineered wood), so we drove out to the store in Bothell, where we picked up some samples and took them home to visualize. We also toured their carpet warehouse and found an excellent wool remnant to put on the stairs, beautiful and cost effective. After we made our choice we put down 1/2 of the estimate as deposit. The installers came about a week later; they were courteous, industrious and very skilled at working around the many little problems involved in putting this kind of flooring in. The final bill was spot on the estimate. From start to finish we got courteous, professional and knowledgeable service at a very agreeable price. We'll use 5-Star again and recommend to anyone with any kind of flooring need.
Description of Work: We had some old carpeting in our downstairs and on the stairs that needed replacing. We opted to go with engineered wood for the flooring including 1/4 trim all the way around, and a wool carpet remnant for the stairs. The work was done over three days. The old carpeting and padding was quickly removed and disposed of by the contractors. The floor got done in two long days; the stairs were finished in a couple hours on the the third morning. We're delighted with the quality of the materials we chose, the speed and professionalism of the installation and the competitive pricing for both materials and labor. Well done, 5-Star!

It was a great experience. I called and within 3 business days George was at my house to give me an estimate. We couldnt decide withnjust e samples so we went to the wharehouse in Bothell that weekend. The husband and wife duo were great! We picked a remenant and the vinyl was in stock. I received a call Monday to set up an appt for Wednesday. The two guys showed up a little after 9 and stayed until after 7pm to complete the job. They didnt quit at 5 to come another day which i really appreciate. The floors look so nice!

Andy came out to my house with carpet samples shortly after I contacted him. I choose carpet. Installation was scheduled within a couple of weeks of our first meeting. For my house remodel, I needed to recarpet most of the main floor and the basement of my house. Coming out to the house to bring samples, measure and help select carpets is really a great customer service touch. That customer orientation is built in to every part of the process in my dealing with 5 Star. All the way to the installers. They have the same carpet everyone has, sell it for a great price, have great installers and are pleasant to work with. I'd give them a five star rating.

A great experience from start to finish. After we first contacted them, George came out and took a ton of measurements, and provided samples of different product options. He made honest recommendations about certain choices, and gave us multiple estimates based on different product choices we might make. In the end, we went with a higher-end carpet option, and it's beautiful. The crew showed up promptly as scheduled, worked efficiently, cleaned up thoroughly, and did a very professional job. We were very impressed with the end result, and will be coming back to 5 Star when it's time to do the floors in some of the other parts of the house.

I give this company straight A's for everything. They also applied an Angie's list discount without having me reminding them! You would say great another 'A' company and it's useful. I would add something though: you know you got the best company from the good company when something does not go according to plans but the problem gets nevertheless resolved professionally and graciously. I had first planned to install laminate in the bathrooms and they agreed to the work. But after the first bath was almost completed, they realized the width of the material was too big and some plumbing could not be accommodate. After talking to me about the issue. they proposed to upgrade the flooring to vinyl planks at no cost for me since they had not anticipated the problem. Seriously, that is THE service you want.
Description of Work: Installation of new carpet entire condo (carpet replacement) Installation of vinyl planks in 2 bathrooms (replaced older simple Vinyl to Vinyl planks) Installation of Laminate in Kitchen.
Loved the advice received while choosing materials. If anything, they had too much to offer us to think about. Lots of communication with Eric during scheduling and after - used text, voice mail, and email to ensure he hits the best for client. Work was very carefully done. Great seams, flat and taught, great edges. Hardwood was LOVELY. TOOK their time. Left work area tidy. Courteous.
Description of Work: Carpets in three bedrooms, one living room replaced. Carpet on stairs removed and replaced with composite hard wood (and landing)

5 Star Flooring was great start to finish. They were prompt at getting back to me when I first contacted them and Eric was super patient with me as I tried to describe what I wanted before I had closed on the actual purchase of the home. Eric actually met me at the house prior to closing in order to take measurements and give me a quote. I really appreciated that he only brought materials that fit in the budget I had already given him over the phone so I felt like I had tons of options without feeling like I was going to have to make big compromises due to cost restrictions. We ended up going with a less expensive laminate that was on sale - and looked exactly like what we wanted, and were able to get a nicer carpet than we thought we could afford! The installers were punctual and were seriously hard workers. When they ended up being short a carton of laminate to finish the job, they left the project in a state that we could live with while we waited the extra few days for the additional materials (at no cost to us). They came back promptly as soon as they could to finish the job and took great care to clean and polish the floor, in addition to vacuuming all the carpets upon completion! The only complaint I have is that when it started to rain, the installers had to move the carpet roll into our garage, which we had carefully placed and organized all of our baseboards in order to put them back on (which we were doing ourselves) and they just squished all the boards together against a wall, which kind of banged them up and left them disorganized. We probably would have told them to do the same thing to save our new carpet from the rain, and since my husband was actually around that whole day it would have been nice if they had just asked first. Other than that, my whole experience beginning to end was absolutely stress-free and I couldn't be happier with the result! I think we're the envy of our new neighbors... :) Thanks Eric and team!
Description of Work: We hired 5 Star Flooring to install about 350 sf of wood-look laminate and about 2000 sf of carpet to our first home purchase. They also sold us the materials and removed a chunk of particleboard subfloor that was too much for us to tackle ourselves. We removed the rest of the old flooring and baseboards ourselves to save $$.
I called and asked for an estimate - owner was very flexible with my schedule and came right out to do an estimate. I then scheduled the appointment. Owner was very communicative throughout process, which I appreciated. Workers were about 30 minutes late in arriving, but got straight to work. Work looked very professional and was done in a timely manner. The only downside was that the technicians used foul language at times. I have small children in the house, and I didn't appreciate that.
Description of Work: Technicians came and laid moisture barrier and laminate flooring that I had purchased. I had a small piece of existing laminate that needed to be cut out - they were able to do that without a problem, prior to installing flooring.

I stated talking with salesman and supervisor George Hollenbeck in May about what I wanted. He returned more than once to bring additional samples from which to choose. I decided to replace the carpet (a good one!) in the living room, dining room, hallway, and master bedroom with laminate and to replace the carpet in the second bedroom (which was to become the "cat room") with linoleum to make sure there could be no leakage with incontinent cats or young kittens. Further, I live in a condominium, on the second of three floors, so I wanted high-quality sound proofing padding, even under the linoleum (which is not usually done). George went out of his way to contact the manufacturer to ensure that no warranties would be invalidated if we added the padding beneath the linoleum. He also loaned me samples and information to take a home owners' association board meeting so I could get approval of the project (needed according to our bylaws). My kitchen, entry, and third bedroom/office were already laminate, but it was impossible to match that after many years (done by previous owner), so I wanted to choose something that I liked and that wouldn't look like an accident, but rather a conscious decision to be different but complementary. I chose Hawaiian Koa for the laminate, and George found a "rustic timber" linoleum that is very similar to the laminate in pattern, so it looks great. Unfortunately, we had to wait until mid June for both products to arrive. But that gave me time to pack books (I have a lot!) and other things in boxes so they could be moved when installation began. George assigned Harry and Demas to install the linoleum in the cat room first on June 8, as it arrived first. Also, that gave me somewhere to move stuff from the other rooms. The following week, after accommodating a medical appointment I had on Monday, Harry and Demas began on the laminate on June 14 for the rest of house. Because I am an older woman who recently had a stroke, I relied on them to move all the furniture around during the installation. That service was much appreciated. The laminate installation took two and one-half days, and on the second day, they added Ramon to the installation team. The guys worked well together and did excellent work, with special attention to interfaces with linoleum, existing laminate, the base of the fireplace, doorways, etc. (A special hand to Demas for that detail work.) George also showed up periodically to make sure everything was on track. At the end, although they swept up the larger pieces of laminate and linoleum that were left over, post-installation cleanup was less than perfect, and I am a perfectionist. I kept finding spots of glue that needed to be removed and situations in which the moving of furniture had resulted in minor damage to walls, door frames, or the furniture. But the flooring itself is beautiful and the work done to install it is excellent. When I discovered a "bubble" had developed in the linoleum after a day or two and called George, he arranged for Harry to come by the next day and solve the problem by adjusting the transition between the linoleum and the laminate at the entrance to the cat room. The team always arrived when they said they would, they honored my request that they cease work by 4 p.m. each day because my downstairs neighbor is a day sleeper who goes to bed then in preparation for a night driving trucks, and they were always friendly and good-natured, even when I got a little irritable about finding my cats and getting them settled in a room so they could not get in the way or get outside. One warning to others who might have flooring installed: it leaves a fine dust on just about everything, so be prepared to vacuum or Swiffer and then damp mop plus wipe down all other surfaces. I'm still doing that as i put books and other things back on shelves.
Description of Work: I have three older cats. The middle one, who is 15, began showing signs of dementia last January (2011) by urinating on just about anything that ended up on the floor that wasn't normally there: papers, plastic bags, a pile of laundry, the end of a bedspread, and even my binoculars. Needless to say, this was also badly affecting the very nice carpet the previous owner had installed about six years earlier, and the small of urine became noticeable no matter how hard I tried to keep up with the cat and clean after her. So I decided to replace the carpet with something else, which would also reduce the allergen situation, which adversely affected some of my family when they visited. I also foster cats and kittens for Seattle Animal Shelter and wanted to convert my second bedroom into a "cat room" that was relatively impervious to the accidents, spilled water, and other incidents kittens can bring. So I wanted to put something on that room's floor that had no seams or other places where liquids could leak down into the padding. I chose 5-Star Flooring from Angie's List based on the reviews and the special discounts available to seniors, etc. I discussed my needs and desires (see above) at length with 5-Star's George Hoellnbeck who recommended appropriate floor coverings and sound-proofing paddings for the various rooms, and closets therein, and helped me find flooring styles I liked at prices I could afford (I had a tentative budget of "around $8,000"). End result was that 5-Star came through and took up the old carpet and padding and installed new laminate in three rooms and hallway and linoleum in another bedroom (the "cat room"). It all went very well, as you can read in the description of the process below. 5-Star is a quality outfit with very friendly and highly qualifed staff and contractors.

The overall experience was fantastic. George came out to do the estimate on short notice, was friendly, quick, and thorough. He emailed me the written estimate within 24 hours of the visit. I was planning to source the flooring materials on my own, but their floor material price was competitive with my other suppliers so I bought the materials through five-star. The installation charge was not a bargain, but it was a fair price competitive with the other bids I received. I was a bit disappointed that they sub-contracted the installation (I usually hire my own subs), but the price was reasonable, I didn't have a vinyl floor installation sub, so I went with it. They had the materials in-stock and scheduled the installation just a few days after George's initial visit. The installer that came, Pablo, was very detail-oriented, conscientious, and did a great job. I was initially concerned about communicating with him because his English was not particularly strong, but I relaxed as soon as I saw the quality of his work. I asked him several questions during the installation about small concerns, but he was consistently thinking 2-3 steps ahead of me with a plan to get all the details right. He waited for both my wife and I to approve the finished product before he packed up his tools. He left the job site clean, left us the scraps (at our request), worked hard, and did a great job. Five-star was a pleasure to work with from start to finish.
Description of Work: Installed a new vinyl floor in a 9' x 12' bathroom, as part of a whole-house remodel that I am running (I'm the homeowner and general contractor). This job included installation of a 5/8" sub-floor, leveling the final sub-floor before setting the vinyl, dealing with old, uneven walls, etc.

We were very impressed with 5 Star Flooring. We received 3 bids, and 5 Star beat them all. Eric brought samples to our house and was very knowledgeable about the different types of carpet, padding, etc.. When we had to postpone installation due to unforeseen circumstances, 5 Star was very understanding and accommodating, and scheduled to come a week later. They were prompt, efficient, and did an excellent job, overall. We will definitely use them for any future flooring jobs and would highly recommend them!

Net Net, I'd highly recommend 5 Star Flooring. I received 4 bids, all in various formats, so it was difficult to compare without breaking them all down. Ultimately, Eric at 5 Star inspired the confidence, knowledge and service I was seeking and gave us an excellent price+ Angies discount. The entire process took 6 weeks, in part due to flooring delivery timing, and having to work around my GC/painters. And, when there was an transition between a carpet step to laminate floor, Eric and Andy (owner) both came out to identify how to apply the best flooring fix to a difficult situation. They were thorough, offered me a great solution, and didn't charge anything extra for the additional time to review, and send the crew back out to fix it. THAT IS SERVICE FOLKS! I'd recommend 5 Star...and will, in fact, have them back again in the fall to finish my upstairs bedrooms. HIRE them!
Description of Work: Eric and the 5 Star Flooring crew provided detailed measurement, several bids, and brought samples to my home along with allowing me to pick up various samples for review in my home. Eric was supportive throughout the process, letting me take the time I needed to determine the best flooring for our situation. He was thorough, answered all of my questions in person, via phone, text and in email. The crew laid my high end laminate first, the carpet and then the vinyl in my bathroom (approx 900 sq ft + stairs & landing). The had to return to fix a few transition issues, but the service was always, professional and the crew helpful, perfectionists and clean. They carry solid manufacturers and work to get a good, competitive bid.

Carpet was installed as bid. We are very happy with the company and the work they performed.
Description of Work: We closed on a house and needed to get carpet quickly before moving in our furniture. Andy came right out and gave a bid within our budget. He got a crew that quickly came to install the carpet. We feel we got nice carpet at a good price in addition to great customer service.

Andy gave us an estimate and brought samples which matched our need - sturdy, good carpet but not super expensive for our "second home condo." Installation went very well, carpet looks great. Very easy to work with this company.
Description of Work: Carpet purchase and install for our condo. Removal of old carpet and pad.

The job was done quickly, cleanly and professionally. Eric gave us a quote at the beginning of the week and had his crew to our house by Thursday. They worked efficiently and did a fabulous job. Eric recommended updating the stairs with a bullnosed edge, and we couldn't be happier. He also recommended an upgraded pad which makes the carpeting more comfortable under foot and much more durable. I highly recommend 5 Star Flooring.
Description of Work: We had new carpeting installed in our bonus room as well as the stairs leading up to it. The stairs were carpeted with a bullnose look, adding elegance to our once "waterfall" stairway.

These guys are just fabulous. They installed carpet for me last summer; a man named Eric came out with a couple of armloads of sample books and went through the options with me. He came back to drop off several large samples so that I could mull over my choices. I was upfront about my financial situation and they seemed eager to find something that would work well for me. The carpet installers were terrific--they were on time, polite, and they kept things tidy. They even threw down some carpet in this hidden, cobwebby corner under the staircase that I hadn't bothered to include in the job--but geez, what a difference it made! I was absolutely thrilled with the job they did, and the carpet pad was SO plush! Unfortunately, due to water damage in my house, I have to get the same exact job done again. When I initially called Andy (the owner), he seemed sincerely sorry to hear that I needed it done again, and said they'd see what they could do. He said salvaging the old carpet might be an option (though because of some additional flood-related work I had to get done, that is no longer a possibility). I felt then that I wanted to go with them again, but as my financial situation hasn't gotten any better, I took a friend's advice to get a bid with another company because he was sure it would be cheaper. Well, Eric just left and his estimate was several hundred dollars cheaper than the "other folks." Granted, that is if I choose to salvage the carpet on the staircase, but the other company had told me that wasn't possible--and anyway, their costs per square foot were a little higher to begin with. They were also going to charge me $175 to install appx. 3'x4' of linoleum (I already have the remnant), where 5 Star is going to charge me about 1/2 that. I also noticed that Eric was here for about 30 minutes measuring, but the person from the other company was only here about 10. I don't know whether that really means anything, but I thought it was interesting. I will definitely be using 5 Star Flooring again this time, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone else.
Description of Work: 2 bedrooms and a staircase were carpeted in a mid-priced berber-style carpet.
