A nice young man preformed the service. He arrived in a beat up truck. The work on the fireplace was appeared to be satisfactory. He used a drop cloth in the living room to cover a light colored carpet. I subsequently added a second drop cloth to cover the path way to the hardwood floor. The carpet did not sustain any damage or dirt. We then went downstairs to the access to the furnace flue and he informed me he could not clean that one. I was informed the cost to clean the second chimney was $150 before he came and I agreed that would be acceptable. This was the flue I was most concerned about and my primary reason for having the chimney serviced. This appears to be a small outfit as he informed me they only have two crews. I would not use this service again and likely will not use Angie's List again. Bill Collison

This customer did request a furnace chimney sweep when he scheduled his chimney sweep. Our company does do furnace chimney sweeps. The reason we couldn't complete the furnace chimney sweep is because the pipe was mortared into the chimney. The customer was informed of this at the time when our technician discovered this. That is not something we could've foreseen when we scheduled this appointment. Our employees drive clearly labeled utility vans with our company name and logo on them. We always arrive in a professional manner. The customer stated that our employee did a good job on the chimney cleaning that we did do, and he covered everything well and he didn't get anything on the carpet. The work that we performed was done well per what the customers review stated. We do perform quality work and we are a quality company.

Very responsive and courteous on the phone. Estimate was done very quickly. They were busy so it took a few weeks to get on the schedule but the chimney was not going anywhere. Took one week start to finish. Results were fantastic, beautiful work. When they left, you would never have know they were here, work site was spotless. Crew was good to work with and very professional. Had me go out and look several times and explained every detail and step. Would use them again no question.

The service man arrived on time, did a chimney sweep, did a fabulous clean-up job inside and outside of the house, explained the problems with the chimney and how the company would improve the chimney. I received an estimate via email a few days later. The service man was very professional and careful. He carefully laid a tarp over the floor and other areas that might get soot on them. He removed any house plants that were too close to the fireplace. When he left, the outside area of the fireplace was cleaner than before he came. He also explained in detail everything he saw that the chimney needed to bring it up to standard. He sent a detailed estimate for repairing the chimney and bringing it back to being an almost new chimney. Even though it would be nice to have all of that work done, I will get two other bids and have only the most important work done. My house needs stained this fall, and I can only afford a certain amount. I also received a call from the company for a 10% discount. The company does a good job of follow-up. And I feel that if they did my chimney work, they would do a good job.
Description of Work: I had the company clean my chimney. They also gave me a bid for inserting a steel chimney insert, repairing other damage that has occurred over the years, and fixing problems from the original build of the chimney.

It wasn't too great. One of their employees decided to go to the bathroom outside. He used a rock wall. It was a kind of a shock especially since there was two employees, one asked if he could use the bathroom. It is a rental property, it was empty and I told him, 'Feel free to use the bathroom, there is even toilet paper in there'. When I brought it to the company's attention, I was kind of a little amazed at the owner, couldn't call me because I immediately called the company and told them why I wouldn't recommend them or give them any kind of rating or anything. They said they would talk to the employee which I don't know what that means and asked me not to give them a poor rating. The owner was not happy, we will deal with this situation, we as a company do not condone this, we hope this situation will not bar you from using us in the future. We are asking that you review the company for the work we did please. It was a weird situation. It was a little bit later but they did come out. The work was okay. I am not jumping up and down. I wasn't impressed at all. I probably won't go for the Big Deals anymore because I have not been too impressed when I get a Big Deal. For what I got, I guess I was expecting more. I didn't know what I was really expecting but I did know I wanted it cleaned out and I guess that is what they did. They were on time. That incident really colored the work they did.
Description of Work: It was a Big Deal. I asked them to clean the chimney and as far as I know they did do that. They basically told me I needed pretty much a whole new chimney because mine was pretty old.

The reason that we asked this customer to review the work we actually did, because an employees personal decisions really had no baring on the work we did. We cleaned the chimney as was contracted and completed the cleaning competently. The choices that our employee made were not acceptable and we made that clear to this customer. He has since been talked to about it and he will not do it again. We dealt with the situation as it needed to be dealt with. But we didn't feel like his personal choices should affect the job that we as a company provided.

After moving into our new house last fall we had Powers come out to clean and inspect the chimney. They found the metal parts at the top of the chimney were likely still the original construction, and the galvanized metal was heavily corroded. To prevent water infiltration they recommended replacing the old corroded parts with new stainless steel. We decided to defer this job slightly due to all the moving related costs. Powers reached back out to us in June and offered a 10% discount if we put down a 50% deposit by the end of June. We did so, and the work was completed today (July 8). They were prompt, polite, and left no mess at all. Very pleased with everything about working with Powers. Will definitely call them when it's time to clean the chimney again.

We thought he was very good and thorough. For their chimney inspection and cleanings,, they're reasonably priced, good, and prompt. However, the estimate we got afterwards to fix all the problems they found was not very affordable. We're debating whether or not to just keep our woodstove based upon the cost they claim it will take to fix it. Admittedly, it needs work, but we weren't expecting repairs to be that much.

Description of Work: The service was supposed to be provided between 2-3pm. No one showed up by 3pm, so I called them. They said the service man was running late. He finally arrived at 5pm. He inspected the chimney and cleaned it. He indicated that some repairs were needed. I asked him to list those repairs and prices separately. He said no problem. When I received the costs of repairs, they said the costs of repairs was more than the cost to rebuild the chimney. About $2000.00. The chimney was rebuilt in 2013. I really questioned their need to rebuild the whole chimney. I think their cleaning and inspection is just a ploy to get more business.

Response from Powers Chimney & Masonry LLC
This customer has had one of two things happen. Either they had a chimney fire that has damaged their flue tile system, and their chimney. Or the people who rebuilt their chimney in 2013 did a really terrible job. The flue system has a crack all the way down it, and the flue tiles are split apart. There are cracks in the mortar. The chimney crown is lifting off of the chimney and cracking. The counter flashing is bent and withered. It is in really bad condition on both sides. The chimney is also missing chimney caps. Chimney caps are the first line of defense against water and animals getting inside a chimney and damaging them. We sent this explanation along with pictures proving all of these issues to the customer. We are not trying to ploy customers into spending money. We are just trying to provide our expert opinion on chimney and masonry needs for our customers when requested to do so. This customer has a lot of repairs that are necessary for this chimney. We provided an estimate for the issues with the chimney, because she asked us to. We are a completely licensed, bonded, and insured company. We are experts in this field. We provided a free estimate to a customer after cleaning her chimney. She didn't like the extent of the repairs that are needed. This isn't our company's fault that she has a chimney in high need of repair.

I am not sure what the customer means by we did not do everything we should have. We perform standard chimney cleanings where we clean out one fireplace and its adjoining flue all the way up the chimney. Then we perform a 20 point safety inspection along with the cleaning. We have a chimney cleaning expert who cleans the chimneys. The customer did not mention anything to the technician or the office following the cleaning. We cannot assist them with the issue any further if they don't approach us following the appointment.

Excellent service and results! The fireplaces have never been this clean. Additionally, the young man who performed the services warned me that my two chimney caps had both rusted through, and really needed to be replaced, and that I had a piece of siding missing on one chimney so that water could enter the chimney, damaging the bricks. He took pictures to show me both issues! Very professional. I ended up paying the same company to replace the chimney caps (10% Angie's list discount) and another company to replace the siding. Yes, I would use Powers Chimney and Masonry again for both chimney/fireplace cleaning, and any other masonry needs I may have.

I will never do business with this company ever again. On the day my service was scheduled, my wife's best friend died that same morning while I was out of town. Because of this, she asked the company to reschedule the appointment which they happily agreed. Fast forward a few days later, I get an email from out of the blue Melody informing me of a $250 SCHEDULING FEE CHANGE. I sent multiple emails to the company in an attempt to remove the charge and explained why she asked to have it rescheduled. After a few responses, this is the response I got from Melody from Power Chimney's: "We are very sorry for what happened. This is strictly business and we were just trying to cover the expenses." I called my credit card company and am disputing this charge. Unfortunately, due to their extremely unfriendly customer service practices I cannot in good faith recommend this company to anyone else.

We had scheduled this job in advance of the job, we had only spoke with the husband. He provided a down payment and we put the job down on the calendar. When we set up an appointment with one person, we don't even know that they have a wife or anyone else that we are supposed to speak to unless they let us know. He did not tell us anyone else was involved. We left a message 24 hours in advance for the husband as we do with all of our customers. We didn't hear back from them, so we proceeded to the job. When we arrived no one was home, part of our work was inside. So we called the husband to find out if he or someone was going to be home at any point during the day so that we could get in there and do the work. We left a voicemail. Our technician received a call back from his wife, she told our technician that her husband didn't tell her that we were coming. There was no mention of anything that had happened that prevented it. Just that she wasn't aware we were coming that day. Our technician told her that we could do the outside work and come back another day to do the top mount damper. She told him that she wasn't comfortable with them doing any work when she wasn't there. So we had to pack up all of our equipment and head back to our office. Once the office was aware we sent an email the same day to the husband letting him know that there would be a charge for rescheduling. We sent the email to him because he was the person we had dealt with all along. We heard back from him after a weekend. He informed us of the reason that his wife couldn't be at the appointment. This was the first time we had heard of a death. We replied to him with our sincerest condolences for the situation. But we explained that we had $250 in expenses that we used that day with gas and labor costs for the time we did spend out there. After we heard the story we offered to take $50 off of the $250 to donate to the cause and to show our regret for their situation. But we explained to him that we did not hear from them at all and we still incurred these costs that day. They could've called that morning and let us know that this was all happening and it could've prevented these costs. We were told that he didn't communicate with his wife and that is why the appointment couldn't happen. That is where we believe the misunderstanding happened. When we went out to do the work we had this charge on the paperwork, we explained all of the charges to the wife and she signed off on the paperwork. It is a very unfortunate situation. The integrity and lack of honesty in this accusation is unfortunate. There are two sides to every story.

They called at 8am to say that they were going to be about an hour and a half later than I was expecting them to be here. Original time was 8:30am he came at 10am. The person who did the work cleaned the main floor chimney and then I had him examine the chimney in the upstairs bedroom to see if it was dirty enough to warrant cleaning. He said it could definitely be cleaned and said that he would give me $20 off for this chimney sweep. I said that was great and let's get it cleaned as well. Original cost for the first chimney was $99 so I expected it to be $79 since he offered the $20 discount, well this is not how it went at all. I was charged another $99 for the second chimney sweep and when I called to talk to Melody the office manager to let her know of the situation she said that I actually did get a discount because normally a chimney sweep is $129. I told her this was unfair since the gentlemen knew I used Angie'sList to pay a total of $99 and $20 off would be $79. she said that's inside sign the paper for total charge of $99 it was against the law for her to change the price. Very unprofessional, very upsetting, I would never recommend this company to anyone.

The technician offered this customer $20 off of the cleaning price. The price for an open faced cleaning is $120 plus tax. He then noticed on the paperwork she was an Angie's List customer. So he gave her the $99 special. Which if you add that up is a $21 discount. So the customer did receive MORE than the $20 off he promised. When he noticed the paperwork he went in to speak to the customer and told her since she was an Angie's List Customer he wrote it up at the Angie's List price. She agreed to this, and she looked at the paperwork and signed it. Then she tried to call in to the office and tell us that she didn't know how much he was charging until later. I told her this was explained to her by the technician, he did give her the $20 off. And that she signed the paperwork telling us to charge her credit card for the $99 plus tax. We did exactly what we told the customer we would do. By the customers own admission the cleaning went well. And we did exactly what we said we would do. The misunderstanding was on the customers part. The office as well as the technician explained these things to her.

Service guy was super-informative about what type of fireplace we had and brought back good photos of what should and should not be going on with our chimney. The best part was that his feedback was directly in line with what our home inspector had told us not one month earlier. It needed a chimney cap and the masonry was decaying to the point of needing replacement. As he was at the house, I also got the call from my insurance agent about the flashing that he and I had JUST discussed, so I felt like there was a lot of others involved backing up what he said, and it was all very truthful. They've also been super-responsive on the phone and by email, which was nice. Definitely pick up their chimney-sweep deal, because they do good work.

They arrived in a timely fashion and performed the work in a clean and professional manner. After the cleaning they sent a bill and a bid for $4000 worth of work. They did not contact us prior to sending the bid nor did they send an email and explain the bid, just the bid. When we set up the appointment it was just to clean the chimney and they said they would get back to us regarding any issues. So, we were expecting some input, but their response was a bit curt and did not explain anything. We just had a new roof installed 2 years ago and had a contractor look at the structural aspects of the chimney at that time and they said it was in great shape and did not need any work. We showed the bid to our contractor who did the work and he looked again and he too felt that their bid was way too high and included work that did not need to be done.

With all of our cleanings we provide a Free estimate. The "F" in professionalism I don't believe is warrented because the customer hired us to come out and clean her chimney. Which she stated in her response was done in a clean and professional manner. That is what she is reviewing. We provide a Free estimate. We also try to call and follow up with the customer and explain the problem. This customer did not answer nor call us back. So how are we able to explain the issue? Most generic contractors are not experts in Masonry. Our employees went to school for this, this is their trade. So we are better equipped to examine and diagnose chimney issues. That is all we did, for Free for this customer. I don't believe their opinion on what was on a Free estimate says is fair to judge our company on. They purchased a service, which we performed perfessionally, and excellently. That is what they should be judging us on.

I don't know enough about chimneys to have much of an opinion about this, and I had 4 or 5 people at my house doing various things that day, so wasn't paying a ton of attention. My recollection is that Powers Chimney was prompt and unobtrusive. They told me my chimney looked good, and swept it out, and there was really nothing noteworthy about the experience for me. The only negative is that they told me they'd email me an inspection report, and I never saw it - but it's possible it just got lost in spam filters, and I wasn't super-excited about it anyway. Overall, Powers Chimney came in and did the job and left, with minimal input from me. I'd use them again in the future.
