I had a chimney liner for my wood insert cleaned out by this company. Since the cleaning, 16 months ago, my insert has not been drawing the proper amount of air to the point that when I open the door to the unit my living room is filled with smoke. The guys that came out were very nice, however I don’t feel they used the proper equipment for my home. They used a very hard looking chimney rod for the work. At one point it got stuck and they pulled so hard that my unit was lifting up inside my house, and it weighs a couple hundred pounds. I was yelling at them to stop and they said it was totally normal. It did not feel normal to me. It could have damaged my insert which I paid $3600 for. They were also supposed to do an inspection. They failed to disclose to my my chimney was not at the proper height for code and that some of the bricks had issues. I just had my chimney cleaned by another company 2 days ago and I was appalled at the amount of soot that fell out after just starting the cleaning. I have 3 children and my chimney was so full it could easily have started a fire. The owner argued on the phone with me and did nothing to try and resolve the situation. He interrupted me several times and made absolutely no apologies. Integrity and hard good work is something I value. The response from the owner makes it clear to me that customer service is not valued.

Response from Powers Chimney & Masonry LLC
We provided a cleaning for [Member Name Removed] in the beginning of August 2016. The cleaning was performed professionally and in a timely manner by a technician who has been with the company over 7 years and has a extremely Good reputation, including employee of the year 4 out of the last 7 years. On January 18th 2018! The office received a phone call from [Member Name Removed], who was upset about the service we provided a YEAR AND A HALF prior. She hired a different company to clean her wood burning insert just before the complaint. [Member Name Removed] was told she had a large amount of creosote build up and that her chimney was not to code. I don't know if she told the company it had been a YEAR AND A HALF off burning since the last cleaning was performed or what she was burning? I do know, You should always burn good dry seasoned wood to prevent heavy creosote build up and burn a hot fire. Chimney fires start from low burning, smoldering fires and burning unseasoned or wet wood. Burning Wood high in sap really increases your risks of a chimney fire and some people burn trash in their inserts which also is not good for build up and chimney fires. It looks to me like the other company was trying to earn her business on some work and used a tactic of bad mouthing another company to make themselves look better. I have been doing this over 10 years and have never had a cleaning complaint a YEAR AND A HALF LATER! If you burn a lot of wood you should have your insert cleaned twice a year and burn Hot Fires to prevent build up. If you burn a half a cord of good dry wood you should have your insert cleaned once a year. If you only burn at Christmas and Thanksgiving, a couple fires a year you should have your insert inspected for the possibility of a cleaning every 2 years. [Member Name Removed] went to elementary school with the technician who performed the cleaning, she signed off on her paperwork and willing paid for her service in 2016. [Member Name Removed] has a insert she is claiming to have paid $3600 for, which is lined with a 6" stainless steel flex liner and I assume was installed by a professional company. If her chimney was not up to code the company who sold her the stove(insert) & Liner kit would/should of informed her of her chimney not being to code and got it to code before the installation of the insert and liner kit. The amount of creosote build up has to do with what your burning, how often your burning and how your burning. If a cleaning is not performed correctly you will know instantly! Your stove (insert) will be plugged up and not draft at all. You will not be able to get a fire going and you would call the company who did the cleaning back immediately not a YEAR AND A HALF LATER! When we performed the cleaning the chimney cap was removed and flexible polymer rods where used with a 6" brush-head. The brush head did get stuck in the top of the stove do to the transition of the liner to adapter to stove, this is not uncommon. You can get it unstuck by wiggling the rods or disconnecting the liner and reconnecting it, after it's dislodged. There is no way your picking up and moving a 250lbs-300lbs stove around with a flexible polymer rod before the rod brakes ( Maybe if your Superman) So yes the brush head got stuck and was retrieved with no damage to the stove or piping. The fact it was stuck shows that it was swept (cleaned) all the way down the liner and into the stove! This complaint is equivalent to getting your oil changed at one location and waiting 15,000 miles to have the next one done, when 3,000 was recommended and then going back to the first company saying you went somewhere else and your oil was really black and low. They said I needed a new air filter, transmission service, wipers and a headlight. Why didn't you tell me this? Also your technician didn't check my tire pressure and I have kids in the car and my car has been running funny ever since. I called [Member Name Removed] and listened to her complaints, She was upset and angry! She repeated herself 4 times with the exact lines of complaint. I tried to squeeze a word or two in but she would get louder and speak faster yelling at me that I'm not hearing her. When I tried to reason with her and explain anything, she would snap back and tell me how we didn't use the right poles and her stove was lifted off the ground. I tried to explain how you can't use a hard fiberglass pole on a flex liner, the brush heads are different for polymer rods and one don't fit on the other. It's impossible to stick a 12"x12" or 12"x16" wire head brush down a 6" flex liner. After she voiced her anger she didn't want to hear what I had to say and hung up on me. I'm sorry [Member Name Removed] feels this way and I hope everything works out for her and her family with the wood insert.

They came back four times to fix what they did. They were supposed to, the pipe that goes from the chimney to the roof, they were supposed to repair that. They repaired it after the 3rd attempt. They did finish the job but it was not done real well. I would not use them again. The first guy they sent out gave a wrong estimate. He got all materials and he got that wrong. It took us a couple of weeks to get them to come back out to give a new estimate and to get the right materials. Then it was just one delay after another. When they were here, it was real sloppy. I just don't think it was very professionally done. They also damaged the gutters in the process.

They came out and cleaned the chimney, but didn't bring the chimney cap part. Unfortunately, they took my old cap (so we have been without!!) and then left all the ashes from the cleaning in my yard for me to clean up. But they did spend a bunch of time writing up $5K estimate for "recommended repairs".

Purchased coupon through Angie's List, provider never got in touch. After some weeks I reached out to them--after that they were responsive. The office seemed to have some communication problems, they called me a day or two before the appointment confused as to whether they'd set up an appointment or not. They did not communicate clearly when the person would arrive. The service itself was great and the estimate was clear (got both a handwritten and typed copy). After the service, I received a follow-up call to see if I had any questions.

Overall, the service was fine. When the guy came out the first time, he went up on the roof, came down, looked in the box, and said he had to reschedule it because it takes two of them for the chimney. I had to call them because they never called me back. That was when I contacted Angie’s List to complain about it because they have not returned my call. I had to pay additional. I would not recommend them. They could have returned my phone call and they should have called me to schedule the service. The price was fine and they came early.

My first contact with the technician from POWERS was just to look into the subject of getting chimney caps, because I was having problems with moisture damage inside my house on that south-facing wall. I spoke to the guys who did a full tear-down and rebuild of my roof a few years ago (A Better Roofing Company), and they did a FREE inspection of the roof and determined that it was intact and that the likely cause of my problem was rain saturating the inside of my chimney and migrating into that south wall near the chimney. A Better Roofing Company does not offer chimney caps, so I checked the reviews on Angie's List and decided to call POWERS. I was scheduled for just two days following my call, which pleased me greatly. On the appointed day the POWERS technician arrived on time, was courteous, professional and friendly, and went up on my roof to take measurements. When he came down he told me my chimney had two flues and that they were a standard size, AND that he had them in his truck and could install them right now if I wished. I agreed, and within a half hour my chimney caps were installed. As I looked at the new chimney caps I mentioned that my brick wall was a bit past due for an application of brick sealer, and the technician told me that POWERS could do that for me too! He took some measurements of my south wall and gave me an estimate. I agreed, and about a week later my sealant was applied. I am DELIGHTED! Typically I have bad luck finding competent, honest help who have a sense of urgency about getting the job done RIGHT the FIRST time. Thanks to Angie's List and POWERS CHIMNEY & MASONRY, my luck may be changing!

Wow. Rarely are we successful finding a company that lives up to their reviews, but this one definitely does. Everyone worked very, very hard to get our job done, even with a few unanticipated setbacks. They came up with a workable solution for our steep roof and very tall chimneys. When we had a scaffolding added to the roof, we needed to address the second chimney (not part of the original plan), and they worked with us. Communication was great. They even came back and worked on a Saturday to get the job done. Cleanup was thorough. They crew was also courteous with my dog and children. The new chimneys look wonderful. Hire this company.
Description of Work: Our chimneys were crumbling away due to prior owner's improper installation of roof flashing. Also had some minor interior leaks as a result. Powers C& M tore down both chimneys and fully replaced them from the roof line. Replaced liner in one chimney (removing interior wood stove to do so), chimney sweep performed. They did all of this in one week. Amazing.

Powers chimney gave us a good estimate, they sounded knowledgeable, and were confident they could take care of our aging chimney on our aging house. We had multiple projects we were trying to line up on our place, one of which was the torch down re-roof which we were not in a position to tackle right away financially. When we scheduled them to perform the service, I asked Melody at the office to please tell her people coming out to be careful while working on our roof as it needed to be redone but we were not in a position to do it yet. No dropping tools or bricks on the roof, that sort of thing. When they came to perform the service I asked again, please be careful while on the roof. Part way through the job I climbed the ladder to check on the status of the job and found their "top man" standing in a pile of mortar on the roof, grinding it into the tar paper like he'd never been told. They expect 50% up front and 50% upon completion of the job. Before they had completed the sealant, which needed to be done a day or two after the mortar set, Melody called to ask about final payment. I told her that the job hadn't been completed yet and that I wanted to see if the roof had any leaks first...I was not going to pay the remaining half if I found a leak due to their negligence. She was short with me and less than concerned about whether my concerns were addressed. The actual work itself was performed to our satisfaction and probably as well as any other mason would have done, but I would never hire them again for their lack of customer concerns and putting payment first.

Response from Powers Chimney & Masonry LLC
This customer signed a contract which stated that payment was due upon completion of the work not including the sealer. The contract protects him to ensure that the sealer will take place as soon as the mortar sets, the weather allows, and our schedule allows. We put everyone on a sealer route and do it as soon as we possibly can. I did inform this customer of that when I spoke to him on the phone. But the contract he signed did ensure that everything would get done and did highlight the payment terms. As far as the lead guy protecting the roof. I did put a note on the paperwork. It is impossible for a mason to complete any masonry work without some mortar getting onto the roof. We put tarps down to protect the roof. We always clean up the excess debris when the job is completed and it is evident that he is not upset about the clean up. It just seems he expected there to be no debris on the roof at all which is not feasible. Our guys are always protective of the roofs on homes, they are trained to be. We are a company of integrity, honesty, and quality.
