very pleased with the work however the technician who came out seemed very interested in figuring out how to get more work out of us than just doing his job the work he found was definately needed but the way he approached the renter in the house was not quite correct when he had been dealing with the owner not the renters
Description of Work: cleaned chimney then came back and did flashing and other work to maintain the outer chimney and make everything safe

The guy showed up on time and did the job he was hired for but then he proceeded to tell me that the bricks were bad and that both our chimney's needed to be torn down and rebuilt to a tune of over $9400.00. I got a second opinion and it turned the bricks were fine and this guys just ground out the old grout; put new grout in and cleaned the brick. Both chimney's now look brand new and it only cost us $4000.00.

Response from Powers Chimney & Masonry LLC
After speaking with the customer, she stated that the only thing that deserved the "D" rating was the price on the free estimate provided after the chimney sweep was complete . Another company made repairs (not a rebuild) at a lesser cost and believed that certain items we estimated were not necessary. She stated our technician deserved an "A" rating for professionalism and the work performed deserved an "A" (chimney sweep). We stand behind the estimate provided and the necessity of each item bid (there had been heavy freeze damage which resulted in significant efflorescence, cracks in the crown and tar patch-work attempts to fix leaks over the brick). The customer, unhappy with the price, found another company who was willing to make cosmetic repairs for half the cost. Powers Chimney & Masonry believes firmly that any work other than a rebuild of the chimney will only result in the need of additional work a few years down the road. The freeze damage that occurred on this customer's chimney is serious, deeper than surface repairs, and the damage has affected the structural integrity of the chimney. In closing, this customer has verbally expressed that her experience with us deserved an "A" for her chimney sweep. Her bad marks were meant towards the free estimate provided, which we did not perform the work for. She did not compare our estimate with an estimate reflecting the same scope of work. We believe the derogatory marks are not warranted or deserved.

The technician explained to me that the chimney cap was not doing it's job and had been left unmaintained in the home we just purchased for years. Both fireboxes had apparent efflorescence and needing rebuilding along with chimney tuck pointing, new chimney caps, and some other maintenance. I had not yet closed on the home, so I contacted the owner and also dealt with the secretary to provide photos, the estimate, and supporting documentation to the seller. The seller was the builder/remodeler and a very honest man. He was willing to negotiate the fixing of the chimney with me, providing we use his mason. His mason did come in about $2,000 under the $5,000 estimate I received from Powers. I did have the builders mason comment on the workmanship of Powers Masonry and tell me they do very quality work especially on chimney repairs. My husband and I would have used them for the work if the situation was not involving the seller. Every member of the company was pleasant, professional, seemed very knowledgable and experienced. I would not hesitate to recommend them and will use them in the future.
Description of Work: The technician was extremely pleasant, professional and seemed experienced. He did a chimney sweep of two chimneys in one stack. He inspected both chimneys and left me with an estimate of work to be done.

Called for a chimney cleaning, inspection and pellet stove cleaning ( We have three fireplaces/stoves) Reply to my initial request was prompt and service appointment times met. I had not cleaned the fireplaces in years...they were cleaned, my home was left clean and neat as the job was finished. There were some safety issues found and addressed in one chimney. Fireplaces now work great, and I will be using this company to repair some freeze damage in the masonry during the course of a future remodel.

LOVED this team. They wer emy third estimate, and instantly had my bid as they were the only co. to actually go up on my roof to do the estimate! Also were the cheapest for the initial requested work, but also explained (and showed proof with pictures of my chimneys) what else needed to be done, and why. They were great about coming as soon as they had an opening, and worked cleanly and quickly, even added on a new cleanout door to the main chimney so I could fix my damper chain, which always got stuck and often made it so we couldn't use the fireplace. Ron, the mason, was a great guy- very helpful and informative, and the whole team was nice and really seemed to know their stuff. (I was able to be home for one day of the work, just so I could watch!) I am planning on having them come back and repoint the stone columns on my porch soon as well. A great team of guys (plus Samantha in the office) who took great care of me from start to finish.
Description of Work: The crew came out and rebuilt my 102 year old chimney from the roof up, and repointed my other chimney (2 stories.) Also replaced flashing, removed debris, sealed, added new cleanout, and generally made my chimneys awesome.

Powers Chimney showed up on time and with three in the crew to do the work that they had quoted. All three gentlemen were polite and respectful. The started on the roof and by mid -afternoon had the complete job done which included a nasty job of wire brushing the exterior of the chimney in the attic area above the kitchen and applying mortar to the entire surface of the exposed brick. Although with the only visible change being the chimney cap and new flashing, we now are confident that from top to bottom this 80 year-old chimney is as good as new and will serve this house for another 80-years.
Description of Work: We own an old Tudor style home in the historic district in Snohomish. We had noticed some water leaking on to our kitchen ceiling as there were staining near the old brick chimney coming up from the basement. I originally brought in 2 roofing companies for bids on re-flashing the chimney. The 2nd company recommended I call in a brick mason as they felt the chimney was failing and water could be coming in through the mortar. Powers Chimney came out and inspected the chimney from the roof all the way down to the basement. The chimney was originally used for the coal furnace and since was converted to be used to exhaust the fumes from the modern gas furnace and hot water heater. They quickly deduced that the chimney had multiple issues as there was not cap on the chimney, the top was not finished correctly, no sealer was on the brick and mortar and the flashing was not installed properly. All of which could be causing the water issue. Additionally it was noticed the hot water and gas furnace were venting into just the open chimney and it was strongly recommended that a liner be installed and connected to these appliances and run the length of the chimney to the cap. We agreed to the estimate for the work and they were able to schedule the work to be done around our schedules.

Power's Chimney gave a couple of estimates, from roof line replacement to minimum required replacement. I choose the minimum required rework, still no small project. The house was built in 1954, the exact color of brick really can't be matched. The masons' incorporated good original brick to the street side of the house, the appearance blends pretty darn good (no noticeable "repair" line). My home inspector noted the deteriorated chimney, however he did not note the deteriorated furnace liner. This repair was definitely needed as the liner crumbed by finger pressure. The removal/replacement was completed during chimney rework. This crew also paid attention to cleanup, both inside and outside. I also received a follow up call, ensuring everything had been completed with the project, a week after I paid them.
Description of Work: Basically repair the top third of a deteriorated 3 flue chimney, about 6 foot wide. I purchased a poorly maintained rental to fix up and move into. The chimney was VERY poor shape. Letting rain water into both the upstairs and downstairs fireplaces. The estimate proposed to complete the following:Remove/replace furnace liner kit.Remove top 17 course of brick, dispose debris.Rebuild top 17 course of brick chimney with matching brick and mortar.Add new flue tiles as needed 8 x12, 12x12, and 12x16.Pour new crown.Remove/replace counter flashing.Tuck point chimney above roof line.

They came to do an estimate for the chimney repair. The estimate came out to $2600.00. The insurance company gave me $1400.00 for the repairs. I felt like they were trying to take advantage of me with this estimate. The chimney had been damaged and smoke was coming through the joints. The fire department told me that I could not use my fire place.

Two members of their crew came out within a few days of my phone call to quote the job. They got up on the roof, looked over both chimneys, and took digital pictures. When back down on the ground, they showed me the pictures and explained what needed to be done and wrote up the quote before they left. The top portion of both chimneys were in very bad shape. They were flexible and patient in waiting for the reroofing to get done by another company so they could do their work. They arrived with a 4 man crew the morning the work was to start. They set up scaffolding along one side of the house to work from. There was also a pulley at the top of the scaffolding to raise and lower material in buckets. Unloaded all of the new materials needed to do the job. They did the following work: 1905 Chimney ? dismantled and removed old chimney bricks down to the roof line and hauled them away. Rebuilt chimney with bricks of our choice. Installed new counter flashing. Poured new crown. Installed stainless steel chimney cap. 1976 Chimney ? removed old counter flashing, crown, and rusted chimney cap and hauled them away. Cleaned moss off of bricks and mortar. Tuck-pointed chimney from roofline up as needed. Installed new counter flashing. Poured new crown. Installed stainless steel chimney cap. Washed off the chimneys and roof when done. Cleaned up the work area on the ground. They were done in 1 day. Sealed all work on both chimneys a week later in dry weather. They had to let things dry and the mortar set up first. There was no damage to the new shingles or any of our property. A few days after the job was done they emailed the before and after digital pictures they took. Both of the chimneys look great and there have been no leaks. Everyone I spoke with from all of the crew members to the office staff were very pleasant and they were quick in answering my questions whether by email or by phone. Great customer service. I would highly recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: We have a 2 ½ story home built in 1905 with 2 chimneys. The chimney built in 1905 runs through the middle of our house and the one built in 1976 is on the south side of our house. The chimneys needed work on the part above the roof which gets the brunt of the weather. The work that was performed is described below.

The short version: they did what was agreed upon on the estimate and charged me what I was told I would pay. The long version: After scheduling the initial chimney work, I called back and asked them to replace a couple of parts on the pellet stove (igniter and basket.) The woman I spoke to (Michelle) told me they could do that when they came to fix the chimney. In fact, the same gentleman who I had out to clean the stove a few weeks back stopped by to check what model stove I had to make sure they got the right parts. That actually bothered me a bit at the time because it was short notice and that day I had a headache the size of Lake Michigan, but after speaking to the office I realized they hadn?t written down which specific stove I had during the previous visit (since that information wasn?t really needed to clean the stove.) So the day they show up for the chimney work I?m expecting they will show up and work on the chimney and then replace the igniter and basket. On the day they came to work on the chimney, I was told to expect them to show up between 9am and 10am. So you can imagine my surprise when, at 8am as I was walking down the hall in my bathrobe to take a shower, my doorbell rang. They were an hour early. They were lucky that I didn?t have anywhere that I had to go that day, or I might not have been there. Fortunately, most of the work involved the chimney, so they got started outside while I got myself cleaned up and dressed. When they first started working in the house I asked about the igniter and was told they had had a hard time finding that part and so they didn?t have it. Ok, I can understand that. Everything went fine until they were finished outside and I was wondering where the basket for the stove was. I asked a different gentleman than the one I had initially spoken to in the beginning (there was a crew of three or four people) and this man told me that hadn?t heard anything about replacing the parts for the stove. This annoyed me as I was under the impression they were going replace those stove parts as well as work on the chimney and I would just pay the extra for the parts and labor when the work was completed. After speaking to the owner, he told me that he tried to find the parts but was unable to, that what I was asking about hadn?t been on the original estimate, and as it was I was getting a great deal because the estimate I was given was a mistake ? it should have cost me almost twice as much - and I was essentially getting the chimney liner and other parts for free. The owner told me he would honor the original estimate (even though a mistake had been made) and assured me that I wasn?t being charged for parts that had not been replaced. I countered with the fact that a simple phone call in advance would have solved the whole issue; even something left on my answering machine such as, ?Hey, we couldn?t get the parts. Your stove is more of a specialty brand, so we?re just going to do the chimney work that day,? would have been acceptable. The owner apologized for me not being informed the parts weren?t going to be there, and I was fine with that. I did honestly wonder if there really was a mistake made with the estimate or if the owner was trying to placate me, but considering the work they did and the price I paid, I tend to believe the owner on this. I wouldn?t be surprised to find out that the chimney parts alone cost $1,000. Honestly, the mix up with the stove parts and the fact that they were an hour early are the only reasons I?m giving them a B and not an A. The fact that they were willing to stand by their original estimate ? even though it cost them money ? is something that I do appreciate and something that most businesses wouldn?t do. I would call them again and probably will the next time I need the chimney cleaned.
Description of Work: Removed and hauled away the crown, added 12x12 flue tile, poured new crown, installed 12x12 chimney cap, removed and hauled away old 3 1/2" pipe, installed new 3 1/2" x 20' liner kit including pipe, top plate, and cap, and demossed the chimney to the roof line.

After reading Member’s review I would like to note a few discrepancies. After Member scheduled an appointment for the aforementioned she did call in and speake with Michelle (the office manager), but Michelle told her one of the technicians would have to give her an estimate for the extra work. The technician never told Member that he was checking the parts to purchase them he told her he was checking the price to find out the cost for the estimate and to see if this was a service we could even perform. When checking for the part prices he discovered it was a specialty part and planned on telling the customer when we went out to do the initial work, which initially is when we were only going to give her an estimate for the additional work. Between this and the time the job started Membler called in and put the original agreed upon down payment on her credit card for the original estimate. It was at this time we realized we had made a huge mistake on our estimate, costing us approximately $500.00. We did the honorable thing and did all the work quoted for exactly the price quoted. Member assumed and expected things that she was not told. She stated that she expected they would do the extra work, and she would just pay for the extra parts and labor and the end. She was never told this. From our office manager to the technician, she was always told she was getting an estimate for the extra work. We came out Jan 13, 2012 and did the original estimate. Feb 15, 2012 we scheduled the work for Feb 22,2012 and Member put a down payment on Feb 16,2012. The work was completed on Feb 22, 2012. We feel we did everything that we agreed to do for Member. We do apologize for being early. Sincerely, Sunshine Stevens Assistant Manager Powers Chimney and Masonry LLC

I called them around noon on a Friday because my pellet stove was acting up. It just so happened they were able to come out that afternoon. The serviceman was there at the promised time. He didn't appear to be wearing a uniform, and when I questioned him about that he was happy to point out his van (which had the company logo and information) and to unzip his coat and show me his shirt with the company logo. He inspected the stove and found out that it needed a good cleaning. He said he could clean it at that time and he would waive the inspection fee ($50.) He not only cleaned my pellet stove without leaving a mess behind, he climbed up on the roof and cleaned out the chimney as well. He found some new damage up there that I had not known about (a damaged flue tile and cracked chimney cap.) He also told me something I already knew: the pellet stove had been improperly installed (the lining was supposed to go all the way up to the top of the chimney and it stopped just a few feet above the pellet stove.) It?s not unsafe to run it the way it was installed, but it?s still not the proper way to do it. I have had people from other companies out to clean the stove before, and upon realizing that the chimney was not lined had them try to scare me into installing a liner as soon as possible. This gentleman did not do that. He gave me an itemized estimate to install a proper chimney liner and replace the damaged flue tile and chimney cap. There were no scare tactics involved, and the price quoted seems reasonable. I?ve had other people tell me it would cost twice what he'd quoted me without an itemized estimate. I would feel comfortable calling them again.

Overall, the service went fine as far as I know. I have never had it done before. If I need chimney sweeping services in the future, I would call around and ask about actually what he did. I am wondering if he shouldn’t have gone from the top of the chimney with brushes, and I have no idea if he did that from the bottom. Basically he had a big shop backing him, and it is all I know. I never called him back to see if he used brushes in there or not, so that is my biggest question.
Description of Work: I used Powers Chimney & Masonry for chimney sweeping 2 months ago. They just cleaned out the chimneys from over the fireplaces and the chimney from below.
